Radioactive risk assessment of beach sand along the coastline of Mediterranean Sea at El-Arish area, North Sinai, Egypt

Investigation of natural and artificial radioactivity levels in travertines of the Cappadocia region in Turkey

This study determined natural and artificial radionuclide concentrations to evaluate natural radioactivity and health risk levels of nine travertines in the Yaprakhisar and Balkayası regions in Turkey. The samples coded B1-M, B2, B5, B7, B8, and B10 represent waste derived from the Yaprakhisar travertines, as well as samples T5-M, T12, and Z1 travertines derived from Balkayası. The levels of natural and artificial radionuclide concentrations (232Th, 40K, and 137Cs) were measured using a high-purity germanium (HpGe) detector system. The travertine activity ranged from 2.09 to 12.07 Bq kg-1 for 232Th, 4.21 to 13.41 Bq kg-1 for 40K, and 0.42-3.26 Bq kg-1 for 137Cs. The results showed that the activity concentration values for 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs were coherent with the travertine analysis results in the UNSCEAR, 2000; 2008 publications. The values obtained were lower than the average values in the UNSEAR reports. The radiological hazard parameters calculated in this study were absorbed gamma dose rate (D), radium equivalent activity (Raeq), annual gonadal dose equivalent (AGDE), exposure dose (ER), total annual effective dose (AEDEtotal), excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCRtotal), gamma representative level (GRL), internal hazard index (Hin) and external hazard index (Hex).

Environmental and mineralogical studies on the stream sediments of Baltim-El Burullus coastal plain, North Delta, Egypt

This work is mainly concerned with the effect of anthropogenic activities and natural radioactivity due to the presence of highly radioactive black sand spots, factory construction, and shipping, in addition to other activities like agriculture on human beings. Forty samples were collected along Baltim-El Burullus coastal plain to detect the effect of these problems and determine the suggested solutions. The black sand of the Baltim-El Burullus coastal plain exhibits a considerable amount of economically heavy minerals, their ratio relative to the bulk composition in the investigated samples ranges from 3.18 to 10.5% with an average of 5.45%. The most important of them are magnetite, ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, garnet, zircon and monazite. The existence of some radioactive-bearing accessory mineral deposits like zircon and monazite led to measuring the naturally occurring radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K to evaluate the excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR). The results showed that these concentrations are 19.1 ± 9.73, 14.7 ± 9.53 and 211 ± 71.34 Bq kg-1 were lower than the corresponding reported worldwide average of 35, 45, and 412 Bq kg-1 for each radionuclide (226Ra, 232Th, and 40 K). The gamma hazard indices such as absorbed dose rate (Dair), the annual effective dose (AED), and excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) factor were computed in the investigated sediments and all the results were found (Dair = 26.4 nGy h-1, AED = 0.03 mSv year-1, ELCR = 0.0001) to be lower than the values suggested by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the effect of Atomic Research (59 nGy h-1, 0.07 mSv year-1 and 0.0029 for Dair, AED and ELCR, respectively). The study suggests that the black sand is safe to use in various infrastructure applications at Baltim-El Burullus coastal plain. The levels of radioactivity are not high enough to pose a risk to human health.

Radiological risk assessment of beaches from volcanic oceanic islands: A case study of the Eastern Canary Islands (Spain)

This work constitutes the first survey that allows the establishment of baseline levels of environmental radioactivity in beach sands from the volcanic oceanic islands of La Graciosa, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. Activity concentration values of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were measured by gamma spectroscopy in 108 samples, collected from 39 beaches across the whole study region. The radiological hazard risks associated with these sands were studied. The mean absorbed dose rate in the study region was 20 nGy h-1, which is below the world average value. The mean outdoor annual effective dose for the beaches studied was 0.025 mSv y-1, which is within the internationally accepted safe limit. Additionally, the assessment of the radium equivalent showed that all samples from the Eastern Canary Islands are below the safe limit of 370 Bq kg-1. Despite not posing any radiological risk to the human population, the radiological hazard indices obtained in Gran Canaria were significantly higher than those of other islands. These significant differences seem to be related to the presence of sediments in the beaches of Gran Canaria that have their origin in lithologies with higher activity concentration values of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K that are not present in the rest of the islands.

A review on radionuclide pollution in global soils with environmental and health hazards evaluation

Human populations are being exposed to a wide spectrum of radiation from soils as a result of the availability of radiation sources. Assessing the ecological and health effects of radionuclides in soils is crucial to support the optimal soil management practices but large-scale studies are limited. This study compiled data on radionuclides (226Ra, 232Th, 40K, 238U, and 137Cs) in soils located across the world (44 countries and 159 places) between 2008 and 2022 and applied radiological hazards indices and several multivariate statistical approaches. The average activity concentration (Bq/kg) of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, 238U, and 137Cs were 408.56, 144.80, 508.78, 532.78, and 83.12, respectively, whereas 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 238U exceeded the standard limits. The principal component analysis explained more than 91% of variation in soils. Based on the geoaccumulation index, 40K posed moderately to heavy contamination whereas 238U and 226Ra posed moderate contamination in soils. Moreover, the mean values of radiological hazards evaluation such as radium equivalent activity (487.17 Bq/kg), external radiation hazard indices (1.32), internal hazard indices (2.15), absorbed dose rate (247.86 nGyh-1), annual effective dose rate (1.82 mSvy-1), activity utilization index (4.54) and excess lifetime cancer risk (63.84 × 10-4) were higher than recommended limit suggesting significant radiological risks in study region soils. The findings indicated that the study area soils were contaminated by radionuclides and unsafe for hazards in terms of the health risks linked with studied radioactive contents. The study is valuable for mapping radioactivity across the globe to determine the level of radioactivity hazards.

Assessment of the potential radiation hazards posed by Nubian sandstone, Egypt

The study found that the activity concentrations of the radionuclides 238U, 232Th and 40K in the sandstone are 32 ± 13, 29.6 ± 12.2, and 132.6 ± 86.4 Bq kg-1, respectively. These values are lower than the reported worldwide limits of 33, 45, and 412 Bq kg-1. According to the present study, the absorbed dose rate (Dair), the annual effective dose, and the excess life time cancer were all found to be below the worldwide mean. Pearson correlation, PCA, and HCA were used to analyze the data and identify patterns in the relationship between radionuclides and radiological hazards. A statistical analysis of the sandstones showed that the radioactive elements 238U, 232Th and 40K are the main contributors to the radioactive risk. The study suggests that the sandstone is safe to use. The levels of radioactivity are not high enough to pose a risk to human health.

Evaluation of natural radioactivity in soils of Konya (Turkey) and estimation of radiological health hazards

Surface soil samples were collected from Konya, Turkey and natural activity concentrations were determined using the ɤ-ray spectroscopy system with HPGe detector. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found to vary from 14.07 ± 0.71 Bq kg-1 dw to 67.27 ± 1.62 Bq kg-1 dw, 10.19 ± 2.60 Bq kg-1 dw to 46.09 ± 0.76 Bq kg-1 dw and 107.87 ± 13.32 Bq kg-1 dw to 605.95 ± 11.34 Bq kg-1 dry weight (dw), respectively. The radiological hazard parameters such as Raeq, D, AEDE, ELCR, AGDE, Hex, Hin, and Iɤ evaluated the radiological risk for the public and environment. The mean values of D, AEDE and ELCR are lower than the world average value of 57 nGy h-1, 70 μSv y-1, 0.29 × 10-3 respectively. The activity concentration distribution maps of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K and the radiological maps of the radiological hazard parameters were plotted using the Surfer programme. Cluster analysis was carried out to indicate the similarity between the variables.

Radioactivity concentration and radiological risk assessment of beach sand along the coastline in the Mediterranean Sea

A radiological baseline survey was conducted using a calculation analysis to assess the 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs distribution in beach sand samples collected from the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. An analysis of the activity concentration of selected radionuclides was conducted. No evidence of recent migration of radiocaesium was found through precipitation, as well as indirect pathways, such as ocean runoff. The activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs in beach sands ranged from 12 ± 1 to 37 ± 4 Bq kg- 1 (mean of 26 ± 3 Bq kg- 1); 18 ± 2 to 71 ± 8 Bq kg- 1 (mean of 40 ± 5 Bq kg- 1); 411 ± 10 to 720 ± 16 Bq kg- 1 (mean of 572 ± 12 Bq kg- 1); and 0.8 ± 0.1 to 3.1 ± 0.6 Bq kg- 1 (mean of 1.9 ± 0.3 Bq kg- 1), respectively. The radiological risk assessment showed that in all cases the values were lower than those that endanger life and safe work.

Separation, reserve estimation and radioactivity responsibility of the economic heavy minerals of East El- Arish black sand, North Sinai, Egypt

Multi-heavy mineral separation techniques like density, magnetic, and electromagnetic techniques are followed by picking, grain counting, and mineralogical examinations conducted with an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). These techniques have been applied to several drill hole (well) composite samples representing beach sand and dunes of East El-Arish area, North Sinai, Egypt. The results explain the remarkable enrichment in total heavy minerals (THM) of beach sand (4.4%) compared to sand dunes (2.6%): this is due to the natural concentration of the currents of the Mediterranean Sea. After characterizing the heavy minerals in terms of the abundance of each mineral species, the mean values of content relative to total economic heavy minerals (TEHM) were determined as 70.03% ilmenite, 3.81% leucoxene, 3.03% magnetite, 8.7% garnet, 10.6% zircon, 3.13% rutile, 0.37% monazite, and 0.31% titanite in the sand dune samples. The total economic heavy minerals in the beach samples were 64.08% ilmenite, 1.6% leucoxene, 2.84% magnetite, 18.16% garnet, 10.4% zircon, 2.18% rutile, 0.61% monazite, and 0.13% titanite. Monazite, thorite, zircon, and apatite are the main radioactive minerals in the study area. The combination of two specific characteristics of the studied monazite (relatively high Th-U content and high frequency) makes monazite the main contributor to radioactivity of the study area.

Natural Radioactivity and Radiological Hazard Effects from Granite Rocks in the Gabal Qash Amir Area, South Eastern Desert, Egypt

The existence of radioactivity linked to the heavy-bearing minerals in building materials—such as granite—has increased attention to the extraction procedure. Granite rocks play an essential economic role in various areas of Egypt. Thus, this study intended to detect the 238U, 232Th, and 40K activity concentrations in the examined granite samples and to determine the corresponding radiological risks associated with the granite. The studied rocks were collected in the Gabal Qash Amir area (south Eastern Desert, Egypt). The obtained results of the activity concentrations for 238U (193 ± 268) Bq/kg, 232Th (63 ± 29) Bq/kg, and 40K (1034 ± 382) Bq/kg indicated that there were moderate concentrations in the investigated samples, which were greater than the worldwide average. The radioactivity levels in the studied granite samples are due to the secondary alteration of radioactive-bearing minerals associated with cracks of granites (secondary minerals in muscovite granites are wolframite, uraninite, uranophane, beta-uranophane, autunite, xenotime, columbite, zircon, and monazite). The radiological risk assessment for the public from the radionuclides that were associated with the studied granite samples was predicted via estimating the radiological hazard factors, such as the radium equivalent content (362 Bq kg−1), compared with the recommended limit. The dosing rate Dair in the air (169.2 nGy/h), the annual effective dose both outdoors (AEDout ~ 0.21 ± 0.17 mSv) and indoors (AEDin ~ 0.83 ± 0.67 mSv), the annual gonadal dose equivalent (AGDE ~ 1.18 ± 0.92 mSv), as well as the external (Hex) and internal (Hin) hazard indices (>1), and another factor were associated with excess lifetime cancer risk. According to the statistical investigation, the studied granites were inappropriate for use in construction and infrastructure fields. They may induce health problems due to the radioactivity levels, which exceed the recommended limits.

Cancer Risk Assessment and Geochemical Features of Granitoids at Nikeiba, Southeastern Desert, Egypt

Different rock types (syenogranite, alkali feldspar granite and quartz syenite intruded by microgranite dikes and quartz veins) were investigated in the Nikeiba region in Egypt. The main components of the studied intrusive rocks, comprised of granites and quartz syenite, are plagioclase, amphibole, biotite, quartz and K-feldspar in different proportions. Ground gamma ray measurements show that syenogranite, quartz syenite and microgranite dikes have the highest radioactivity (K, eU, eTh and their ratios) in comparison with alkali feldspar granite. Geochemically, syenogranite, alkali feldspar granite and quartz syenite are enriched with large-ion lithophile elements (LILE; Ba, Rb, Sr) and high field-strength elements (HFSE; Y, Zr and Nb), but have decreased Ce, reflecting their alkaline affinity. These rocks reveal calc–alkaline affinity, metaluminous characteristics, A-type granites and post-collision geochemical signatures, which indicates emplacement in within-plate environments under an extensional regime. U and Th are increased in syenogranite and quartz syenite, whereas alkali feldspar granite shows a marked decrease in U and Th. The highest average values of AU (131 ± 49 Bq·kg−1), ATh (164 ± 35) and AK (1402 ± 239) in the syenogranite samples are higher than the recommended worldwide average. The radioactivity levels found in the samples are the result of the alteration of radioactive carrying minerals found inside granite faults. The public’s radioactive risk from the radionuclides found in the investigated granitoid samples is estimated by calculating radiological risks. The excess lifetime cancer (ELCR) values exceed the permissible limit. Therefore, the granitoids are unsuitable for use as infrastructure materials.
