Recent advances in self-powered and flexible UVC photodetectors

Ultraviolet-C (UVC) radiation is employed in various applications, including irreplaceable applications in military and civil fields, such as missile guidance, flame detection, partial discharge detection, disinfection, and wireless communication. Although most modern electronics are based on Si, UVC detection technology remains a unique exception because the short wavelength of UV radiation makes efficient detection with Si difficult. In this review, recent challenges in obtaining ideal UVC photodetectors with various materials and various forms are introduced. An ideal photodetector must satisfy the following requirements: high sensitivity, fast response speed, high on/off photocurrent ratio, good regional selectivity, outstanding reproducibility, and superior thermal and photo stabilities. UVC detection is still in its infancy compared to the detection of UVA as well as other photon spectra, and recent research has focused on different key components, including the configuration, material, and substrate, to acquire battery-free, super-sensitive, ultra-stable, ultra-small, and portable UVC photodetectors. We introduce and discuss the strategies for fabricating self-powered UVC photodetectors on flexible substrates in terms of the structure, material, and direction of incoming radiation. We also explain the physical mechanisms of self-powered devices with various architectures. Finally, we present a brief outlook that discusses the challenges and future strategies for deep-UVC photodetectors.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of malachite green dye by highly stable visible-light-responsive Fe-based tri-composite photocatalysts

A novel visible-light-sensitive ZnVFeO₄ photocatalyst has been fabricated by the precipitation method at different pH values for the enhanced photocatalytic degradation of malachite green (MG) dye as a representative pollutant under visible light irradiation at neutral pH conditions. The structure and optical characteristics of the prepared photocatalysts were investigated by XRD, FTIR, N2 adsorption-desorption, TEM, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) analyses. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of ZnVFeO₄ photocatalysts superior the efficiency to be more than that of the mono and bi-metal oxides of iron and iron zinc oxides, respectively. The best sample, ZnVFeO₄ at pH 3, significantly enhances the degradation rate under visible light to be 12.7 × 10^-3 min^-1 and can retain a stable photodegradation efficiency of 90.1% after five cycles. The effect of the catalyst dose and the initial dye concentration on the photodegradation process were studied. This promising behavior under visible light may be attributed to the low bandgap and the decreased electron-hole recombination rate of the ZnVFeO₄ heterostructures. The scavenger experiment confirmed that the hydroxyl radicals induced the MG photodegradation process effectively. Hence, the ZnVFeO₄ is a reliable visible-light-responsive heterostructure photocatalyst with excellent potential for the photodegradation of organic pollutants in wastewater treatment.

UV Photochromism in Transition Metal Oxides and Hybrid Materials

Limited levels of UV exposure can be beneficial to the human body. However, the UV radiation present in the atmosphere can be damaging if levels of exposure exceed safe limits which depend on the individual the skin color. Hence, UV photochromic materials that respond to UV light by changing their color are powerful tools to sense radiation safety limits. Photochromic materials comprise either organic materials, inorganic transition metal oxides, or a hybrid combination of both. The photochromic behavior largely relies on charge transfer mechanisms and electronic band structures. These factors can be influenced by the structure and morphology, fabrication, composition, hybridization, and preparation of the photochromic materials, among others. Significant challenges are involved in realizing rapid photochromic change, which is repeatable, reversible with low fatigue, and behaving according to the desired application requirements. These challenges also relate to finding the right synergy between the photochromic materials used, the environment it is being used for, and the objectives that need to be achieved. In this review, the principles and applications of photochromic processes for transition metal oxides and hybrid materials, photocatalytic applications, and the outlook in the context of commercialized sensors in this field are presented.

UV responsive quercetin derived and functionalized CuO/ZnO nanocomposite in ameliorating photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B dye and enhanced biocidal activity against selected pathogenic strains

Quercetin was investigated for its role as a reducing agent in biosynthesizing CuO/ZnO nanocomposite, its subsequent surface functionalization and influence in Rhodamine B dye degradation and biocidal activity. The as synthesized quercetin functionalized CuO/ZnO nanocomposite (CuO/ZnO@Q) was analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra red spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). XRD showed the formation of crystalline CuO, ZnO phases and FTIR analysis revealed the incorporation of quercetin functional groups in the synthesized nanocomposite. TEM image displayed the formation of quercetin deposited spherical CuO/ZnO nanostructure with the EDAX results confirming the presence of organic carbon composition from quercetin. The UV absorption spectra ascertained the presence and role of quercetin in the enhanced absorption of radiation in the UV range. CuO/ZnO@Q showed improved photocatalysis with complete Rhodamine B dye degradation after 75 min of UV irradiation, as against pure CuO/ZnO, which exhibited incomplete dye degradation even after 90 min of irradiation. Moreover, quercetin surface functionalization effectively ameliorated its antimicrobial activity against E. coli, S. aureus, Shigella, B. subtilis, A. niger and C. albicans, proving its potential in significantly enhancing biocidal activity along with photocatalytic dye degradation in a natural and eco-friendly route.
