Gut microbiota and hypertension: a bibliometric analysis of recent research (2014-2023)

Background

Cardiovascular diseases persist as the primary cause of mortality in the global population. Hypertension (HTN) is widely recognized as one of the most crucial risk factors contributing to severe cardiovascular conditions. In recent years, a growing body of research has highlighted the therapeutic potential of gut microbiota (GM) in addressing cardiovascular diseases, particularly HTN. Consequently, unraveling and synthesizing the connections between GM and HTN, key research domains, and the underlying interaction mechanisms have grown increasingly vital.

Methods

We retrieved articles related to GM and HTN from 2014 to 2023 using Web of Science. Bibliometric tools employed in this analysis include CiteSpace and VOSviewer.

Result

From 2014 to 2023, we identified 1,730 related articles. These articles involved 88 countries (regions) and 9,573 authors. The articles were published in 593 journals, with 1000 references exhibiting co-occurrence more than 10 times. The number of studies in this field has been increasing, indicating that it remains a research hotspot. We expect this field to continue gaining attention in the future. China leads in the number of published articles, while the United States boasts the most extensive international collaborations, signifying its continued prominence as a research hub in this domain. Tain You-Lin, Hsu Chien-Ning, Raizada Mohan K, and Yang Tao are among the authors with the highest publication volume. Publications in this field are frequently found in nutrition, cardiovascular, and molecular biology journals. The most frequently occurring keywords include metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, inflammation, short-chain fatty acids, trimethylamine N-oxide, chronic kidney disease, heart failure, and high-salt diet.

Conclusion

The relationship between GM and HTN is presently one of the most active research areas. By employing bibliometric tools, we analyzed critical and innovative articles in this field to provide an objective summary of the primary research directions, such as the relationship between GM and HTN, GM metabolites, high-salt diet, the developmental origins of health and disease, obstructive sleep apnea-Induced hypertension and antihypertensive peptide. Our analysis aims to offer researchers insights into hotspots and emerging trends in the field of GM and HTN for future research reference.

Preparation and activity evaluation of angiotensin-I converting enzyme inhibitory peptides from protein hydrolysate of mulberry leaf

Angiotensin-I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptides drew wide attention in the food industry because of their natural reliability, non-toxicity, and safety. However, the characteristics of ACE inhibitory peptides obtained from protein hydrolysate of mulberry leaf prepared by Flavourzyme were still unclear. Based on the single-factor test, the Plackett-Burman test and response surface test were used to determine the key factors affecting the ACE inhibition rate in mulberry leaf protein hydrolysate and the optimum conditions of enzymatic hydrolysis. The results showed that the optimum technical parameters were as follows: the ratio of material to liquid is 1: 25 (w / v, g/mL), the Flavourzyme to substrate ratio was 3,000 U/g, the temperature of enzymatic hydrolysis was 50°C, pH was 6.3, and the time of enzymatic hydrolysis was 2.9 h. The ACE inhibitory peptides in the mulberry leaf protein hydrolysates were purified by ultrafiltration and gel filtration, aiming to obtain the highest active component. The 12 peptide sequences were identified by reverse liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and then, they were docked to the crystal structure of human angiotensin-I converting enzyme (1O8A), and the interaction mechanisms of 12 peptide sequences and 1O8A were analyzed. The docking results showed that among the 12 peptide sequences, ERFNVE (792.37 Da), TELVLK (351.72 Da), MELVLK (366.72 Da), and FDDKLD (376.67 Da), all had the lowest docking energy, and inhibition constant. The chemosynthetic ERFNVE (IC₅₀: 2.65 mg/mL), TELVLK (IC₅₀: 0.98 mg/mL), MELVLK (IC₅₀:1.90 mg/mL) and FDDKLD (IC₅₀:0.70 mg/mL) demonstrated high ACE-inhibitory activity with competitive inhibition mode. These results indicated that the ACE-inhibiting peptides from mulberry leaf protein hydrolyzed (FHMP) had the potential activities to inhibit ACE and could be used as functional food or drugs to inhibit ACE. This work provides positive support for mining the biological activity of mulberry leaves in the treatment of hypertension.

Validation of Layer-By-Layer Coating as a Procedure to Enhance Lactobacillus plantarum Survival during In Vitro Digestion, Storage, and Fermentation

Probiotics are sensitive to phenolic antibacterial components and the extremely acidic environment of blueberry juices. Layer-by-layer (LbL) coating using whey protein isolate fibrils (WPIFs) and sodium alginate (ALG), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), or xanthan gum (XG) was developed to improve the survival rate of Lactobacillus plantarum 90 (LP90) in simulated digestion, storage, and fermented blueberry juices. The LbL-coated LP90 remained at 6.65 log CFU/mL after 48 h of fermentation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) indicated that dense and rough wall networks were formed on the surface of LP90, maintaining the integrity of LP90 cells after the coating. Stability evaluation showed that the LbL-coated LP90 had a much higher survival rate in the processes of simulated gastrointestinal digestion and storage. The formation mechanism of the LbL coating process was further explored, which indicated that electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding were involved. The LbL coating approach has great potential to protect and deliver probiotics in food systems.

The promising role of probiotics/prebiotics/synbiotics in energy metabolism biomarkers in patients with NAFLD: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease with a high prevalence worldwide, seriously harming human health, and its pathogenesis remains unclear. In recent years, increasing evidence has indicated that intestinal microbiota plays an important role in the occurrence and development of NAFLD. The regulation method of probiotics/prebiotics/synbiotics can alter the intestinal microbiota and has been suggested as an option in the treatment of NAFLD.

Methods

Five databases of PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, clinicaltrails.gov, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched initially, and then the eligible studies were screened. Finally, the data of included studieswere extracted, combined and analyzed

Results

A total of 29 randomized controlled trials involving 2,110 patients were included in this study. The results showed that using probiotics/prebiotics/synbiotics in the intervention group could reduce the levels of glucose (SMD = −0.23, 95% CI [−0.45, −0.01], P = 0.04), HOMA-IR (SMD = −0.47, 95% CI [−0.63, −0.31], P < 0.00001) and insulin (SMD = −0.46, 95% CI [−0.76, −0.16], P = 0.002) in sugar metabolism; in terms of lipid metabolism, the levels of TC (SMD = −0.62, 95%CI [−0.87, −0.36], P < 0.00001), and LDL-C (SMD = −0.57, 95%CI [−0.85, −0.28], P < 0.00001) were decreased; and the level of ALB was decreased in protein metabolism (SMD = −0.34, 95%CI [−0.61, −0.06], P = 0.02).

Conclusions

Based on the current evidence, probiotics/prebiotics/synbiotics may improve energy metabolism biomarkers in the NAFLD population, but these effects still need to be confirmed by further research.

Biodetoxification and Protective Properties of Probiotics

Probiotic consumption is recognized as being generally safe and correlates with multiple and valuable health benefits. However, the mechanism by which it helps detoxify the body and its anti-carcinogenic and antimutagenic potential is less discussed. A widely known fact is that globalization and mass food production/cultivation make it impossible to keep all possible risks under control. Scientists associate the multitude of diseases in the days when we live with these risks that threaten the population’s safety in terms of food. This review aims to explore whether the use of probiotics may be a safe, economically viable, and versatile tool in biodetoxification despite the numerous risks associated with food and the limited possibility to evaluate the contaminants. Based on scientific data, this paper focuses on the aspects mentioned above and demonstrates the probiotics’ possible risks, as well as their anti-carcinogenic and antimutagenic potential. After reviewing the probiotic capacity to react with pathogens, fungi infection, mycotoxins, acrylamide toxicity, benzopyrene, and heavy metals, we can conclude that the specific probiotic strain and probiotic combinations bring significant health outcomes. Furthermore, the biodetoxification maximization process can be performed using probiotic-bioactive compound association.

Identification and Effects of Skim Milk-Derived Bioactive Antihypertensive Peptides

Bioactive peptides are generated during milk fermentation or enzymatic hydrolysis. Lactobacillus (L) helveticus is commonly used to produce some types of fermented milk products. Fermented milk derived bioactive peptides are known to be beneficial in human health. Anti-hypertensive peptides play a dual role in the regulation of hypertension through the production of the vasoconstrictor angiotensin II and its inactivation of the vasodilator bradykinin. MALDI MS/MS, nano-LC/MS/MS and RP-HPLC were used to isolate peptides showing angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition (ACE-I) from 12% fermented skim milk using a combination of L. helveticus and Flavourzyme®. The fermentation procedure facilitated the identification of 133 anti-hypertensive peptides and 75% short chain amino acids, and the three with the highest ACE-I activity reduced blood pressure in a rat model of hypertension. The freeze- dried extract was supplemented in rodent chow. In this study 14-week-old male spontaneously hypertensive rats were fed for 10 weeks with the identified peptides added to chow and compared to controls supplemented with skim milk powder. Blood pressure (BP) decreased significantly (p < 0.05) from 6 to 10 weeks of FS groups (120/65 mmHg) compared with the NFS control groups, where the BP increased significantly (220/150 mmHg) (p < 0.05). The F6 fraction provided bioactive peptides with stronger antihypertensive properties than other fractions. Skim milk fermented by L. helveticus and Flavourzyme® generates several bioactive peptides which have a blood pressure lowering effect in hypertensive disease.

Antihypertensive potential of fermented milk: the contribution of lactic acid bacteria proteolysis system and the resultant angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory peptide

Hypertension has become an increasing health concern given that it is a major risk for cardiovascular disease. Synthetic antihypertensive drugs, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, effectively control high blood pressure but are associated with unpleasant side effects. Milk fermented by certain lactic acid bacteria (LAB) provides energetic contributions to the management of hypertension, especially the regulation of ACE. LAB are important food-grade microbial organisms that release ACE inhibitory peptides through their unique proteolysis system, which consists of cell-envelope proteinases (CEPs), transporter systems, and intracellular peptidases. Thus, the description of LAB proteolysis system genes and their contributions to ACE inhibitory peptide production is a challenging but promising study. This review provides a survey of LABs with potential ACE inhibitory activity and investigates the research progress of LAB proteolytic systems with an emphasis on the correlation of their components and ACE inhibitory activity. Subsequently, a depiction of the ACE inhibitory peptide action mechanism, structure-activity relationship and bioavailability is presented. The improved functional annotation of LAB proteolytic system genes will provide an excellent framework for future experimental validations of predicted ACE inhibitory activity in fermented milk.

Potential Immunomodulatory Properties of Biologically Active Components of Spices Against SARS-CoV-2 and Pan β-Coronaviruses

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-induced COVID-19 has emerged as a defining global health crisis in current times. Data from the World Health Organization shows demographic variations in COVID-19 severity and lethality. Diet may play a significant role in providing beneficial host cell factors contributing to immunity against deadly SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis. Spices are essential components of the diet that possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. Hyperinflammation, an aberrant systemic inflammation associated with pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, and multiorgan dysfunction, is a major clinical outcome in COVID-19. Knowing the beneficial properties of spices, we hypothesize that spice-derived bioactive components can modulate host immune responses to provide protective immunity in COVID-19. This study emphasizes that biologically active components of spices might alleviate the sustained pro-inflammatory condition by inhibiting the activity of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukins (IL6, IL8), and chemokine (CCL2) known to be elevated in COVID-19. Spices may potentially prevent the tissue damage induced by oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory mediators during SARS-CoV-2 infection. The current study also highlights the effects of spices on the antioxidant pathways mediated by Nrf2 (nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2) and Hmox1 (heme oxygenase 1) to restore oxidative homeostasis and protect from aberrant tissue damage. Taken together, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of bioactive components of spices may hold a promise to target the cellular pathways for developing antivirals against SARS-CoV-2 and pan β-coronaviruses.

Dairy-originated digestion-resistant and bioactive peptides increase the risk of hypertension: Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study

Milk-protein-derived bioactive peptides (BPs) have been proposed as modulators of different regulatory processes involved in blood pressure regulation. Studies on the long-term effects of BPs on blood pressure have not yet been conducted. We aimed to investigate the association of dairy-originated BPs with the risk of hypertension (HTN) in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Cohort Study (TLGS). In this cohort study, 4378 subjects with a mean follow-up period of 3.1 years were included in the final analysis. Dietary intake, physical activity, demographic, and anthropometric data and blood pressure measurements were obtained for all participants. Various types of dairy-originated BPs were determined by an in silico method. High intake of total digestion-resistant and bioactive peptides (OR: 1.31, CI 95%: 1.01-1.70), dipeptides (OR: 1.33, CI 95%: 1.03-1.73), peptides with more than seven residues (OR: 1.32, CI 95%: 1.01-1.71), glycosylated residues (OR: 1.39, CI 95%: 1.07-1.80), highly hydrophilic peptides (OR: 1.32, CI 95%: 1.01-1.71), and low hydrophobic peptides (OR: 1.32, CI 95%: 1.01-1.71) was associated with an increased risk of HTN in the adjusted model. In addition, subjects in the higher tertile of anti-HTN peptide (OR: 1.33, CI 95%: 1.02-1.72) and antidiabetic peptide (OR: 1.35, CI 95%: 1.04-1.76) intake had a higher risk of HTN than those in the lower tertile. No significant association emerged between calcium intake from dairy and incident risk of HTN. Our results showed that the intake of some forms of digestion-resistant and BPs, such as anti-HTN peptides, dipeptides, and peptides with more than seven residues, can increase the risk of HTN in the TLGS population.

Proteolytic profile, angiotensin-I converting enzyme inhibitory activity and sensory evaluation of Codonopsis pilosula and fish collagen cheese

Four types of cheeses were prepared included plain- cheese (control), Codonopsis pilosula (CP)- cheese, plain- cheese with fish collagen (FC; control) and CP- cheese with FC. The effects of cheese samples on acidification, proteolysis of milk proteins using three methods (cadmium-ninhydrin method, O-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) assay, and electrophoresis assay), and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory activity were investigated during 0, 2, & 4 weeks of ripening. In addition, the sensory evaluation was also investigated during 0, 2, 4, & 8 weeks of ripening. The presence of FC in CP- cheese increased the numbers of free amino acids (FAA) at 0 and 2 weeks. The addition of CP both in the presence and absence of FC affected positively (p < 0.05) on the concentrations of OPA peptide in cheese compared to their respective controls. The presence of CP and/or FC in cheese increased the degradation of milk proteins (α-, β-, & κ- caseins, β-lactoglobulin, and α-lactalbumin) compared to their respective controls during ripening periods. The highest ACE inhibitory activity was shown at 4 weeks of ripening for CP- cheese both in the absence (67.75 ± 14.15%) and the presence (78.65 ± 2.85%) of FC. In addition, 8-week-old CP-cheese in the presence and absence of fish collagen had similar organoleptic characteristics to plain-cheese. In conclusion, C. pilosula and/or fish collagen may lead to the development in the production and formulation of cheese with anti-ACE activity.

Recent advances in alleviating food allergenicity through fermentation

The increasing prevalence of food allergies is a significant challenge to global food health and safety. Various strategies have been deployed to decrease the allergenicity of food for preventing and reducing related disorders. Compared to other methods, fermentation has unique advantages in reducing the allergenicity of food and may represent a new trend in preventing food-induced allergies. This review introduces the characteristics of allergens in various foods, including shellfish, soy, peanut, milk, tree nut, egg, wheat, and fish. The mechanism and pathological symptoms of allergic reactions are then summarized. Furthermore, the advantages of fermentation for reducing the allergenicity of these foods and preventing allergies are evaluated. Fermentation is an efficient approach for reducing or eliminating food allergenicity. Simultaneously, it improved the nutritional value and physicochemical properties of food materials. It is conceivable that a combination of mixed strain fermentation with additional processing, such as heat treatment, pulsed light, and ultrasonication, will efficiently reduce the allergenicity of various foods and preserve their unique taste and nutritional components, providing significance for patients with allergies.

Probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics added to dairy products: Uses and applications to manage type 2 diabetes

Diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM) is associated with hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and gut dysbiosis. Probiotics and prebiotics can ameliorate T2DM through different mechanisms of action, such as reducing oxidative stress, or the inhibition of pro-inflammatory markers, among others. Multiple studies in vitro and in vivo have demonstrated the reduction of hyperglycemia, depressive behaviors, obesity, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance in diabetic patients through the consumption of dairy products, such as yogurt, fermented milk, and cheese, enriched with potential probiotic strains, prebiotic ingredients, and synbiotics (understood as a combination of both). Therefore, this review aims to provide an updated overview about the impact of dairy foods with probiotics, prebiotics, or synbiotics to prevent and manage T2DM, the mechanism of action related to the host health, and the future tendencies for developing new dairy foods. Despite the addition of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics to dairy products could be highly beneficial, more evidence, especially from clinical trials, is needed to develop evidence-based T2DM prevention guidelines.

Effect of probiotics on oxidative stress and inflammatory status in diabetic nephropathy: A systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials

This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of probiotics on serum high sensitivity-C reactive protein (hs-CRP) and oxidative stress biomarkers among patients with Diabetic Nephropathy (DN). Electronic databases were searched through May 10, 2020. Seven trials that included 340 patients were identified for analysis. Meta-analysis indicated that probiotics significantly reduced hs-CRP (WMD = -1.53 mg/L; 95% CI = -2.38, -0.69; P < 0.001) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) (WMD = -0.62 ɥmol/L; 95% CI = -1.18, -0.06; P = 0.030) levels in DN patients, whereas they increased Glutathione (GSH) (WMD = 73.84 ɥmol/L; 95% CI = 24.3, 123.29; P = 0.003) and Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) (WMD = 26.54 mmol/L; 95% CI = 6.23, 46.85; P = 0.010). Therefore, probiotics may improve hs-CRP and oxidative stress biomarkers in DN population.

Integrated Continuous Bioprocess Development for ACE-Inhibitory Peptide Production by Lactobacillus helveticus Strains in Membrane Bioreactor

Production of bioactive peptides (BAPs) by Lactobacillus species is a cost-effective approach compared to the use of purified enzymes. In this study, proteolytic Lactobacillus helveticus strains were used for milk fermentation to produce BAPs capable of inhibiting angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Fermented milks were produced in bioreactors using batch mode, and the resulting products showed significant ACE-inhibitory activities. However, the benefits of fermentation in terms of peptide composition and ACE-inhibitory activity were noticeably reduced when the samples (fermented milks and non-fermented controls) were subject to simulated gastrointestinal digestion (GID). Introducing an ultrafiltration step after fermentation allowed to prevent this effect of GID and restored the effect of fermentation. Furthermore, an integrated continuous process for peptide production was developed which led to a 3 fold increased peptide productivity compared to batch production. Using a membrane bioreactor allowed to generate and purify in a single step, an active ingredient for ACE inhibition.

Draft genome sequence of Lactobacillus plantarum strain DMR17 isolated from homemade cow dahi of Sikkim Himalayan region: an evaluation of lactate fermentation and secondary metabolism

Lactobacillus plantarum DMR17 was isolated from homemade cow dahi of Sikkim Himalayan region of India. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of this strain. A total of 21,176,638 paired-end reads were obtained which were assembled into 65 contigs. The reference genome used was L. plantarum WCFS1. The genome size of DMR17 was 3,228,341 bp with G + C content of 46.25%. 3302 coding sequences were predicted including 68 tRNA and 67 rRNA genes. More than 88% of the total pre-processed reads from the sample were mapped to the reference genome. The identified coding proteins were classified into 27 functional categories based on COG classification. The genome was found to possess genes for lactate and mixed acid fermentation. The genome also showed the presence of genes for catabolism of aromatic compounds, phosphorous, and other metabolism. The genome information of L. plantarum DMR17 provides the basis for understanding the functional properties and to consider its use as a potential component of functional foods especially dahi.

Microbiological characterization of Gioddu, an Italian fermented milk

Gioddu, also known as "Miciuratu", "Mezzoraddu" or "Latte ischidu" (literally meaning acidulous milk), is the sole variety of traditional Italian fermented milk. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the microbiota and the mycobiota occurring in artisan Gioddu sampled from three Sardinian producers by combining the results of viable counting on selective culture media and high-throughput sequencing. Physico-chemical parameters were also measured. The overall low pH values (3.80-4.22) recorded in the analyzed Gioddu samples attested the strong acidifying activity carried out by lactic acid bacteria during fermentation. Viable counts revealed the presence of presumptive lactococci, presumptive lactobacilli and non-Saccharomyces yeasts. A complex (kefir-like) microbiota of bacteria and yeasts was unveiled through sequencing. In more detail, Lactobacillus delbrueckii was found to dominate in Gioddu together with Streptococcus thermophilus, thus suggesting the establishment of a yogurt-like protocooperation. Unexpectedly, in all the three analyzed batches from two out of the three producers Lactobacillus kefiri was also detected, thus representing an absolute novelty, which suggests the presence of bioactive compounds (e.g. exopolysaccharides) similar to those characterizing milk kefir beverage. Mycobiota population, studied for the very first time in Gioddu, revealed a more complex composition, with Kluyveromyces marxianus, Galactomyces candidum and Geotrichum galactomyces constituting the core species. Further research is needed to disclose the eventual occurence in Gioddu of probiotic cultures and bioactive compounds (e.g. exopolysaccharides, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides and antimicrobial compounds) with potential health-benefits for the consumers.

The influence of probiotics on bile acids in diseases and aging

Recent evidence indicates the use of probiotics in the prevention and treatment of diseases. Probiotics are capable of changing the gut microbiota composition and bile acid synthesis to elicit health benefits such as cholesterol-lowering, weight reduction, and improving insulin sensitivity. The aging population is prone to develop diseases because of their decreased physiological and biological systems. Probiotics are one of the promising supplements that may potentially counteract these detrimental effects. This review will discuss the influence of probiotics on bile acids in different populations-the elderly, obese individuals, and those with hypercholesterolemia, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Is diet partly responsible for differences in COVID-19 death rates between and within countries?

Reported COVID-19 deaths in Germany are relatively low as compared to many European countries. Among the several explanations proposed, an early and large testing of the population was put forward. Most current debates on COVID-19 focus on the differences among countries, but little attention has been given to regional differences and diet. The low-death rate European countries (e.g. Austria, Baltic States, Czech Republic, Finland, Norway, Poland, Slovakia) have used different quarantine and/or confinement times and methods and none have performed as many early tests as Germany. Among other factors that may be significant are the dietary habits. It seems that some foods largely used in these countries may reduce angiotensin-converting enzyme activity or are anti-oxidants. Among the many possible areas of research, it might be important to understand diet and angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) levels in populations with different COVID-19 death rates since dietary interventions may be of great benefit.

Application of Mass Spectrometry Imaging for Visualizing Food Components

Consuming food is essential for survival, maintaining health, and triggering positive emotions like pleasure. One of the factors that drive us toward such behavior is the presence of various compounds in foods. There are many methods to analyze these molecules in foods; however, it is difficult to analyze the spatial distribution of these compounds using conventional techniques, such as mass spectrometry combined with high-performance liquid chromatography or gas chromatography. Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a two-dimensional ionization technology that enables detection of compounds in tissue sections without extraction, purification, separation, or labeling. There are many methods for ionization of analytes, including secondary ion mass spectrometry, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization, and desorption electrospray ionization. Such MSI technologies can provide spatial information on the location of a specific analyte in food. The number of studies utilizing MSI technologies in food science has been increasing in the past decade. This review provides an overview of some of the recent applications of MSI in food science and related fields. In the future, MSI will become one of the most promising technologies for visualizing the distribution of food components and for identifying food-related factors by their molecular weights to improve quality, quality assurance, food safety, nutritional analysis, and to locate administered food factors.

The Gut Microbiota and Its Implication in the Development of Atherosclerosis and Related Cardiovascular Diseases

The importance of gut microbiota in health and disease is being highlighted by numerous research groups worldwide. Atherosclerosis, the leading cause of heart disease and stroke, is responsible for about 50% of all cardiovascular deaths. Recently, gut dysbiosis has been identified as a remarkable factor to be considered in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). In this review, we briefly discuss how external factors such as dietary and physical activity habits influence host-microbiota and atherogenesis, the potential mechanisms of the influence of gut microbiota in host blood pressure and the alterations in the prevalence of those bacterial genera affecting vascular tone and the development of hypertension. We will also be examining the microbiota as a therapeutic target in the prevention of CVDs and the beneficial mechanisms of probiotic administration related to cardiovascular risks. All these new insights might lead to novel analysis and CVD therapeutics based on the microbiota.

Functional Foods: Product Development, Technological Trends, Efficacy Testing, and Safety

Functional foods is a very popular term in the social and scientific media; consequently, food producers have invested resources in the development of processed foods that may provide added functional benefits to consumers' well-being. Because of intrinsic regulation and end-of-use purposes in different countries, worldwide meanings and definitions of this term are still unclear. Hence, here we standardize this definition and propose a guideline to attest that some ingredients or foods truly deserve this special designation. Furthermore, focus is directed at the most recent studies and practical guidelines that can be used to develop and test the efficacy of potentially functional foods and ingredients. The most widespread functional ingredients, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), probiotics/prebiotics/synbiotics, and antioxidants, and their technological means of delivery in food products are described. The review discusses the steps that food companies should take to ensure that their developed food product is truly functional.

The role of nutraceuticals in prevention and treatment of hypertension: An updated review of the literature

Hypertension (HTN) is a worldwide epidemic in both developed and developing countries. It is one of the leading causes of major health problems such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and heart attack. In recent years, several studies have reported associations between specific dietary ingredients and improving HTN. Nutraceuticals are natural food components with pharmacological properties. Reports suggest that functional foods and nutraceutical ingredients might support patients to obtain the desired therapeutic blood pressure (BP) goals and reduce cardiovascular risks by modulating various risk factors such as oxidative stress, renin-angiotensin system hyperactivity, inflammation, hyperlipidemia, and vascular resistance. We review the recent clinical experiments that have evaluated the biological and pharmacological activities of several types of nutraceuticals, including sour tea, cocoa, common spices, vitamin C, vitamin E, lycopene, flavonoids, coenzyme Q10, milk's tripeptides, calcium, magnesium, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and prebiotics in preventing and treating HTN. This review summarizes recent knowledge about the impact of common nutraceuticals for the regulation of BP.

Probiotics: If It Does Not Help It Does Not Do Any Harm. Really?

Probiotics per definition should have beneficial effects on human health, and their consumption has tremendously increased in the last decades. In parallel, the amount of published material and claims for their beneficial efficacy soared continuously. Recently, multiple systemic reviews, meta-analyses, and expert opinions expressed criticism on their claimed effects and safety. The present review describes the dark side of the probiotics, in terms of problematic research design, incomplete reporting, lack of transparency, and under-reported safety. Highlighted are the potential virulent factors and the mode of action in the intestinal lumen, risking the physiological microbiome equilibrium. Finally, regulatory topics are discussed to lighten the heterogeneous guidelines applied worldwide. The shift in the scientific world towards a better understanding of the human microbiome, before consumption of the probiotic cargo, is highly endorsed. It is hoped that better knowledge will extend the probiotic repertoire, re-confirm efficacy or safety, establish their efficacy and substantiate their beneficial effects.

Identification and Evaluation of Probiotic Potential in Yeast Strains Found in Kefir Drink Samples from Malaysia

Kefir drink is a source of probiotic microorganism with remarkable functional and technological properties. The objective of this work is to isolate yeast strains from Malaysian kefir drink and evaluate them for probiotic potentials. In the present study, nine strains of probiotic yeast were isolated from a Malaysian kefir drink and identified according to their 16S rDNA sequences. Furthermore, their probiotic potential was evaluated. The probiotic properties were tested for aspects of antibiotic susceptibility, antimicrobial activity, and gastrointestinal condition tolerance (pH and temperature). Five isolated strains, M3, Y5, Y9, Y11 and A1, showed good tolerance towards low pH condition while three strains, A1, M1, and M3, showed antimicrobial activity against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and Salmonella sp. Most isolates were resistant to penicillin, streptomycin, and ampicillin, and grew well at human body temperature. The result of this test indicates that the yeast strains isolated from Malaysian kefir drink have excellent potential for use as probiotics in various products. Lastly, kefir milk is one of the excellent source of probiotic yeast strains and could be used as a new yeast probiotic formulation or in food supplements.

Immunomodulatory effects of probiotics: Can they be used to treat allergies and autoimmune diseases?

As a person ages, physiological, immunological and gut microbiome changes collectively result in an array of chronic conditions. According to the 'hygiene hypothesis' the increasing prevalence of immune-mediated disorders may be related to intestinal dysbiosis, leading to immune dysfunction and associated conditions such as eczema, asthma, allergies and autoimmune diseases. Beneficial probiotic bacteria can be utilized by increasing their abundance within the gastrointestinal lumen, which in turn will modulate immune cells, such as, T helper (Th)-1, Th2, Th17, regulatory T (Treg) cells and B cells, which have direct relevance to human health and the pathogenesis of immune disorders. Here, we describe the cross-talk between probiotics and the gastrointestinal immune system, and their effects in relation to inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, allergies and atopic dermatitis.
