Impact of double-chain surfactant stabilizer on the free active surface sites of gold nanoparticles

Fluorescent Noncovalent Organic Framework for Supporting Gold Nanoparticles as Heterogeneous Catalyst with Merits of Easy Detection and Recycle

A porous noncovalent organic framework with AIE effect is designed and synthesized as the support for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The framework is fabricated through the electrostatic complexation between carboxymethyl cellulose and tetraphenylethene-containing ammonium surfactant, which can complex AuNPs via the noncovalent interactions to offer a heterogeneous catalyst. Compared to the covalent modification on cellulose, this noncovalent framework gains superiorities in the catalyst synthesis and the size control of AuNPs. The AIE property and water-insolubility allow such heterogeneous catalysts to be easily detected, separated, and recycled, opening a new pathway for the reduction of nitrobenzene compounds and some dye compounds in aqueous conditions, which present the features of green chemistry. The use of cellulose for developing new heterogeneous metal catalysts, especially in a noncovalent way, would promote the value-added utilization of cellulose. This work provides a design strategy for gaining heterogeneous metal catalysts by taking advantage of natural bioresources.

Formulation and Evaluation of Prednisolone Sodium Metazoate-Loaded Mucoadhesive Quatsomal Gel for Local Treatment of Recurrent Aphthous Ulcers: Optimization, In Vitro, Ex Vivo, and In Vivo Studies

This study aims to formulate a buccal mucoadhesive gel containing prednisolone sodium metazoate-loaded quatsomes for efficient localized therapy of recurrent aphthous ulcers. Quatsomes were prepared using a varied concentration of quaternary ammonium surfactants (QAS) and cholesterol (CHO). A 2³ factorial design was conducted to address the impact of independent variables QAS type (X₁), QAS to CHO molar ratio (X₂), and sonication time (X₃). The dependent variables were particle size (PS; Y₁), polydispersity index (PDI; Y₂), zeta potential (ZP; Y₃), entrapment efficiency percent (EE%; Y₄) and percent of drug released after 6 h (Q6%: Y₅). Then, the selected quatsomes formula was incorporated into different gel bases to prepare an optimized mucoadhesive gel to be evaluated via in vivo study. The PS of the developed quatsomes ranged from 69.47 ± 0.41 to 113.28 ± 0.79 nm, the PDI from 0.207 ± 0.004 to 0.328 ± 0.004, ZP from 45.15 ± 0.19 to 68.1 ± 0.54 mV, EE% from 79.62 ± 1.44 to 98.60% ± 1.22 and Q6% from 58.39 ± 1.75 to 94.42% ± 2.15. The quatsomal mucoadhesive gel showed rapid recovery of ulcers, which was confirmed by the histological study and the evaluation of inflammatory biomarkers. These results assured the capability of the developed quatsomal mucoadhesive gel to be a promising formulation for treating buccal diseases.

Different Agglomeration Processes Induced by the Varied Interaction of Fe-Fe Analogues with Differently Charged Surfactants

The catalytic activity of Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) is mainly tuned via the control of material sizes and morphologies. However, the shapes and sizes of many PBAs are difficult to control. In this work, a facile approach is demonstrated using differently charged surfactants to tune the catalytic activity of PBAs. Fe-Fe PBAs prepared with non-ionic P123, cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate are chosen to study the effect of surfactant charges on the catalytic activity. The transesterification of propylene carbonate to dimethyl carbonate by methanol is selected as a model reaction. Owing to the different agglomeration processes of PB particles after modified with differently charged surfactants, significantly varied shapes and sizes were observed. Accordingly, the catalytic activity is greatly varied by adding surfactants. The different catalytic activities may arise from the different behaviors of agglomeration of PB particles after surfactant modification as well as the material size and shape changes. Besides, apparent activation energies for PBs adding different surfactants were derived. Finally, the agglomeration mechanism of PB particles in the presence of differently charged surfactants was proposed.

The upregulated intestinal folate transporters direct the uptake of ligand-modified nanoparticles for enhanced oral insulin delivery

Transporters are traditionally considered to transport small molecules rather than large-sized nanoparticles due to their small pores. In this study, we demonstrate that the upregulated intestinal transporter (PCFT), which reaches a maximum of 12.3-fold expression in the intestinal epithelial cells of diabetic rats, mediates the uptake of the folic acid-grafted nanoparticles (FNP). Specifically, the upregulated PCFT could exert its function to mediate the endocytosis of FNP and efficiently stimulate the traverse of FNP across enterocytes by the lysosome-evading pathway, Golgi-targeting pathway and basolateral exocytosis, featuring a high oral insulin bioavailability of 14.4% in the diabetic rats. Conversely, in cells with relatively low PCFT expression, the positive surface charge contributes to the cellular uptake of FNP, and FNP are mainly degraded in the lysosomes. Overall, we emphasize that the upregulated intestinal transporters could direct the uptake of ligand-modified nanoparticles by mediating the endocytosis and intracellular trafficking of ligand-modified nanoparticles via the transporter-mediated pathway. This study may also theoretically provide insightful guidelines for the rational design of transporter-targeted nanoparticles to achieve efficient drug delivery in diverse diseases.

Binary Surfactant-Mediated Tunable Nanotip Growth on Gold Nanoparticles and Applications in Photothermal Catalysis

Plasmonic nanostructures with sharp tips are widely used for optical signal enhancement because of their strong light-confining abilities. These structures have a wide range of potential applications, for example, in sensing, bioimaging, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering. Au nanoparticles, which are important plasmonic materials with high photothermal conversion efficiencies in the visible to near-infrared region, have contributed greatly to the development of photothermal catalysis. However, the existing methods for synthesizing nanostructures with tips need the assistance of poly(vinylpyrrolidone), thiols, or biomolecules. This greatly hinders signal detection because of stubborn residues. Here, we propose an efficient binary surfactant-mediated method for controlling nanotip growth on Au nanoparticle surfaces. This avoids the effects of surfactants and can be used with other Au nanostructures. The Au architecture tip growth process can be controlled well by adjusting the ratio of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide to hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride. This is due to the different levels of attraction between Br^-/Cl^- and Au³⁺ ions. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering and catalytic abilities of the synthesized nanoparticles with tips were evaluated by electromagnetic simulation and photothermal catalysis experiments (with 4-nitrothiophenol). The results show good potential for use in surface-enhanced Raman scattering applications. This method provides a new strategy for designing plasmonic photothermal nanostructures for chemical and biological applications.
