Recent Progress on Functionalized Nanoporous Heteropoly Acids: From Synthesis to Applications

Functionalized nanoporous heteropoly acids (HPAs) have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their enhanced surface area and porosity, as well as their potential for low-cost regeneration compared to bulk materials. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent advancements in the synthesis and applications of functionalized HPAs. We begin by introducing the fundamental properties of HPAs and their unique structure, followed by a comprehensive overview of the various approaches employed for the synthesis of functionalized HPAs, including salts, anchoring onto supports, and implementing mesoporous silica sieves. The potential applications of functionalized HPAs in various fields are also discussed, highlighting their boosted performance in a wide range of applications. Finally, we address the current challenges and present future prospects in the development of functionalized HPAs, particularly in the context of mesoporous HPAs. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the recent progress in the field, highlighting the significant advancements made in the synthesis and applications of functionalized HPAs.

Production of Alkyl Levulinates from Carbohydrate-Derived Chemical Intermediates Using Phosphotungstic Acid Supported on Humin-Derived Activated Carbon (PTA/HAC) as a Recyclable Heterogeneous Acid Catalyst

This work reports a straightforward and high-yielding synthesis of alkyl levulinates (ALs), a class of promising biofuel, renewable solvent, and chemical feedstock of renewable origin. ALs were prepared by the acid-catalyzed esterification of levulinic acid (LA) and by the alcoholysis of carbohydrate-derived chemical platforms, such as furfuryl alcohol (FAL) and α-angelica lactone (α-AGL). Phosphotungstic acid (PTA) was chosen as the solid acid catalyst for the transformation, which was heterogenized on humin-derived activated carbon (HAC) for superior recyclability. Using HAC as catalyst support expands the scope of valorizing humin, a complex furanic resin produced inevitably as a side product (often considered waste) during the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis/dehydration of sugars and polymeric carbohydrates. Under optimized conditions (150 °C, 7 h, 25 wt.% of 20%PTA/HAC-600 catalyst), ethyl levulinate (EL) was obtained in an 85% isolated yield starting from FAL. Using the general synthetic protocol, EL was isolated in 88% and 84% yields from LA and α-AGL, respectively. The 20%PTA/HAC-600 catalyst was successfully recovered from the reaction mixture and recycled for five cycles. A marginal loss in the yield of ALs was observed in consecutive catalytic cycles due to partial leaching of PTA from the HAC support.

Turning mannitol-rich agricultural waste to poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) with Cobetia amphilecti fermentation and recovery with methyl levulinate as a green solvent

The present study explored the use of mannitol and mannitol-rich agro-industrial wastes as substrates for PHB production by Cobetia amphilecti isolated from the green Ulva sp. seaweed. Cultivation of C. amphilecti on mannitol, celery, and olive leaves (OLs) waste led to 4.20, 6.00, and 5.16 g L^-1 of cell dry mass (CDM), 76.3, 25.5, and 12.0% of PHB content in CDM and 3.2, 1.53, and 0.62 g L^-1 of PHB concentration, respectively; which suggested that they can be exploited as carbon substrates for the production of PHB. Extraction of PHB from C. amphilecti cultures by solubilization in the green solvent methyl levulinate (ML) (2% w/w, 140 °C, 1 h) indicated that the recovery yield and purity of PHB are above 97 and 90% w/w, respectively. The use of ML could be an attractive method for the recovery of PHB when safe and non-toxic solvents are required.

Esterification of Levulinic Acid to Methyl Levulinate over Zr-MOFs Catalysts

At present, the trend towards partial replacement of petroleum-derived fuels by those from the revaluation of biomass has become of great importance. An effective strategy for processing complex biomass feedstocks involves prior conversion to simpler compounds (platform molecules) that are more easily transformed in subsequent reactions. This study analyzes the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that contain Zr metal clusters formed by ligands of terephthalic acid (UiO-66) and aminoterephthalic acid (UiO-66-NH2), as active and stable catalysts for the esterification of levulinic acid with methanol. An alternative synthesis is presented by means of ultrasonic stirring at room temperature and 60 °C, in order to improve the structural properties of the catalysts. They were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, microwave plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, acidity measurement, and N2 adsorption. The catalytic reaction was carried out in a batch system and under pressure in an autoclave. Its progress was followed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Parameters such as temperature, catalyst mass, and molar ratio of reactants were optimized to improve the catalytic performance. The MOF that presented the highest activity and selectivity to the desired product was obtained by synthesis with ultrasound and 60 °C with aminoterephthalic acid. The methyl levulinate yield was 67.77% in batch at 5 h and 85.89% in an autoclave at 1 h. An analysis of the kinetic parameters of the reaction is presented. The spent material can be activated by ethanol washing allowing the catalytic activity to be maintained in the recycles.

Conversion of furfuryl alcohol to ethyl levulinate in the presence of mesoporous aluminosilicate catalyst

The one-pot acid-catalyzed the conversion of furfuryl alcohol (FA) to ethyl levulinate (EL) was investigated in the presence of mesoporous aluminosilicate (TUD-1) with a high surface area (up to 579 m2 g−1) and well-interconnected mesospheres synthesized via a solvothermal process and characterized using scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, 27Al-NMR, and N2 sorption isotherm. The resulting solid acid catalyst was tested for the alcoholysis of FA with ethanol, affording 87.8% EL yield under the optimal reaction conditions of 120°C and 4 h. Moreover, the catalyst showed a good reusability with less loss of activity after a simple solvent washing and calcination procedure.
