Abstract
PURPOSE Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected millions of people worldwide and caused mortality. Many factors have been reported to affect the prognosis of COVID-19. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of drug therapy and vaccination on prognosis in patients hospitalized with a COVID-19 diagnosis. METHODS In this single-center, cross-sectional study, data were retrospectively collected from patients receiving inpatient treatment at a university hospital with a diagnosis of COVID-19 between January 1, 2020, and April 30, 2022. The patients' demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded. The Chi-square, Cox and logistic regression was performed, P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Total 1723 patients (50.1% were men, mean age: 60.6 ± 16.90) who had not been vaccinated rate was 27.0% (> 3 doses: 45.7%). Mortality rate was 17.0%. Increasing age, male, a high Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), and no vaccination significantly increased mortality (P < 0.05). The mortality rate was significantly lower in the chloroquine treatment group than in the other treatment groups. Increasing age, male, and a high CCI were determined to be factors that significantly increased the length of hospital stay (LOHS). LOHS found to be significantly lower in the favipiravir or chloroquine groups compared to the remaining treatment groups (P < 0.001). Both mortality and the LOHS significantly differed according to AST, d-dimer, ferritin, and GFR. CONCLUSION This study primarily investigated the effect of treatment and vaccination on the prognosis of COVID-19. This was determined to be prepared for another potential pandemic that may arise due to COVID-19.

Abstract
AIM To determine association between diabetes in confirmed cases of COVID-19 and intensive care admission and in-hospital mortality, evaluate several laboratory parameters as mortality predictor and develop predictors of in-hospital mortality among diabetics with COVID-19. METHODS This retrospective cohort recruited all cases of COVID-19 hospitalized in Fatmawati General Hospital from March to October 2020. Inclusion criterion was RT-PCR confirmed cases of COVID-19 who aged 18 years and older while exclusion criteria were incomplete medical record or cannot be found and pregnant women. RESULTS We enrolled 506 participants to this study with median age of 51 years (IQR:22), female (56.32%), and diabetes (28.46%). Diabetes increased intensive care admission (adjusted OR: 2.57; 95% CI: 3.52-10.43) and in-hospital mortality (adjusted OR: 2.50; 95% CI: 1.61-3.89). In predicting in-hospital mortality, ferritin and lactate dehydrogenase offered an acceptable discrimination, AUC: 0.71 (95% CI: 0.62-0.79) and AUC: 0.70 (95% CI: 0.61-0.78), respectively. The optimal cut-off of predicting mortality for ferritin was 786 g/mL and for LDH was 514.94 u/L. Factors include age above 70 years old, RBGs level on admission above 250 mg/dL or below 140 mg/dL, ferritin level above 786 ng/mL and presence of ARDS increased the odds of mortality among individuals with diabetes. CONCLUSIONS Diabetes increases risk intensive care admission and in hospital mortality in COVID-19. Multivariate analysis showed that older age, RBG on admission, high ferritin level, presence of ARDS increased the odds of mortality among individuals with diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with COVID-19 experience thrombotic events probably due to the associated hypofibrinolysis resulting from the upregulation of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) antigen. This study evaluated plasma PAI-1 antigen levels and haematological parameters before treatment and after recovery from severe COVID-19 in Ghana. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted at Sunyani Regional Hospital, and recruited 51 patients who had RT-PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2. Participants' sociodemographic data and clinical characteristics were taken from the hospital records. Venous blood was taken before COVID-19 treatment commenced for FBC, PAI-1 and ferritin assays. FBC was assessed using an automated haematology analyzer, whilst plasma PAI-1 Ag and serum ferritin levels were assessed with sandwich ELISA. All the tests were repeated immediately after participants recovered from COVID-19. RESULTS Of the 51 participants recruited into the study, 78.4% (40) had non-severe COVID-19 whiles 21.6% (11) experienced a severe form of the disease. Severe COVID-19 participants had significantly lower haemoglobin (g/dL): 8.1 (7.3-8.4) vs 11.8 (11.0-12.5), p<0.001; RBC x 1012/L: 2.9 (2.6-3.1) vs 3.4 (3.1-4.3), p = 0.001; HCT%: 24.8 ± 2.6 vs 35.3 ± 6.7, p<0.001 and platelet x 109/L: 86.4 (62.2-91.8) vs 165.5 (115.1-210.3), p<0.001, compared with the non-severe COVID-19 group. But WBC x 109/L: 11.6 (9.9-14.2) vs 5.4 (3.7-6.6), p<0.001 and ferritin (ng/mL): 473.1 (428.3-496.0) vs 336.2 (249.9-386.5), p<0.001, were relatively higher in the participants with severe COVID-19 than the non-severe COVID-19 counterparts. Also, the severely ill SARS-CoV-2-infected participants had relatively higher plasma PAI-1 Ag levels (ng/mL): 131.1 (128.7-131.9) vs 101.3 (92.0-116.8), p<0.001, than those with the non-severe form of the disease. Participants had lower haemoglobin (g/dL): 11.4 (8.8-12.3 vs 12.4 (11.5-13.6), p<0.001; RBC x 1012/L: 3.3 (2.9-4.0) vs 4.3 (3.4-4.6), p = 0.001; absolute granulocyte count x 109/L: 2.3 ± 1.0 vs 4.6 ± 1.8, p<0.001, and platelet x 109/L: 135.0 (107.0-193.0) vs 229.0 (166.0-270.0), p<0.001 values at admission before treatment commenced, compared to when they recovered from the disease. Additionally, the median PAI-1 Ag (ng/mL): 89.6 (74.9-100.8) vs 103.1 (93.2-128.7), p<0.001 and ferritin (ng/mL): 242.2 (197.1-302.1) vs 362.3 (273.1-399.9), p<0.001 levels were reduced after a successful recovery from COVID-19 compared to the values at admission. CONCLUSION Plasma PAI-1 Ag level was higher among severe COVID-19 participants. The COVID-19-associated inflammation could affect red blood cell parameters and platelets. Successful recovery from COVID-19, with reduced inflammatory response as observed in the decline of serum ferritin levels restores the haematological parameters. Plasma levels of PAI-1 should be assessed during the management of severe COVID-19 in Ghana. This will enhance the early detection of probable thrombotic events and prompts Physicians to provide interventions to prevent thrombotic complications associated with COVID-19.

Abstract
Objectives COVID-19 exacerbates the long-standing, low-grade chronic inflammation observed in diabetes leading to heightened insulin resistance and hyperglycemia. Mortality increases with hyperglycemia and poor glycemic variability, hence, this study aims to identify the predictors associated with poor glycemic control and increased glucose variability among patients with COVID-19 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Methodology A retrospective chart review of 109 patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 and T2DM admitted from March 2020 to June 2021 was done. Logistic regression was done to determine predictors for hyperglycemia and poor variability. Results Of the 109 patients, 78% had hyperglycemia and poor variability and 22% had no poor outcomes. Chronic kidney disease (eOR 2.83, CI [1.07-7.46], p = 0.035) was associated with increased glycemic variability. In contrast, increasing eGFR level (eOR 0.97, CI [0.96-0.99], p = 0.004) was associated with less likelihood of increased variability. Hs-CRP (eOR 1.01, CI [1.00-1.01], p = 0.011), HbA1c (eOR 1.86, CI [1.23-2.82], p = 0.003), severe COVID-19 (eOR 8.91, CI [1.77-44.94], p = 0.008) and critical COVID-19 (eOR 4.42, CI [1.65-11.75], p = 0.003) were associated with hyperglycemia. Steroid use (eOR 71.17, CI [8.53-593.54], p<0.001) showed the strongest association with hyperglycemia. Conclusion Potential clinical, laboratory and inflammatory profiles were identified as predictors for poor glycemic control and variability outcomes. HbA1c, hs-CRP, and COVID-19 severity are predictors of hyperglycemia. Likewise, chronic kidney disease is a predictor of increased glycemic variability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to understand whether the one-time chair stand test (CS-1) is useful for predicting the severity of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in 101 patients admitted to the hospital with acute respiratory failure. METHODS This single-centered, prospective observational cohort study enrolled 101 critically ill adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 who underwent the CS-1 as a dynamic evaluation tool in clinical practice between late April 2020 and October 2021. Data on demographic characteristics, symptoms, laboratory values, computed tomography findings, and clinical course after admission were collected. Furthermore, the data was compared, and the association between the intubation and non-intubation groups was determined. We also calculated the cutoff point, area under the curve (AUC), and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the change in oxygen saturation (ΔSpO2) during the CS-1. RESULTS Thirty-three out of 101 patients (33%) were intubated during hospitalization. There was no significant difference in the resting SpO2 (93.3% versus 95.2%, P = 0.22), but there was a significant difference in ΔSpO2 during the CS-1 between the intubation and non-intubation groups (10.8% versus 5.5%, P < 0.01). In addition, there was a significant correlation between hospitalization and ΔSpO2 during the CS-1 (ρ = 0.60, P < 0.01). The generated cutoff point was calculated as 9.5% (AUC = 0.94, 95% CI = 0.88-1.00). CONCLUSION For COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory failure, the CS-1 performed on admission was useful for predicting the severity of COVID-19. Furthermore, the CS-1 can be utilized as a remote and simple evaluation parameter. Thus, it could have potential clinical applications in the future.

Abstract
Purpose: Elevated ferritin levels are associated with poor outcomes in Covid-19 patients. Optimal timing of ferritin assessment and the merit of longitudinal values remains unclear. Methods: Patients admitted to Henry Ford Hospital with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 were studied. Regression models were used to determine the relation between ferritin and mortality, need for mechanical ventilation, ICU admission, and days on the ventilator. Results: 2265 patients were evaluated. Patients with an initial ferritin of > 490 ng/mL had an increased risk of death (OR 3.4, P < .001), admission to the ICU (OR 2.78, P < .001) and need for mechanical ventilation (OR 3.9, P < .001). There was no difference between admission and Day 1 ICU ferritin levels (611.5 ng/mL vs. 649 ng/mL respectively; P = .07). The decline in ferritin over ICU days 1-4 was similar between survivors and non-survivors. A change in ferritin levels from admission to ICU Day 1 (P = .330), or from ICU Day 1 to 2 (P = .788), did not predict days on the ventilator. Conclusions: Initial Ferritin levels were highly predictive of ICU admission, the need for mechanical ventilation and in-hospital mortality. However, longitudinal measures of ferritin throughout the hospital stay did not provide additional predictive value.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim: The purpose of this study is to find out the association between procalcitonin and hepcidin in patients with COVID-19, in addition to their role as diagnostic markers. PATIENTS AND METHODS Materials and methods: A total of 75 patients infected with coronavirus were included in the current study, their age is ranging between 20 to 78 years. Those patients was hospitalized in Al-Sadr Teaching Hospital in Najaf, in Iraq. This study also included 50 healthy subjects which are volunteers and considered as a (control group). Biomarker (procalcitonin and hepcidin) measurements were achieved by electrochemiluminescent immunoassay (ECLIA) in the Elecsys immunoassay system. RESULTS Results: The present study showed a significant increase the serum cencentration of hepcidin and procalcitonin in patients with COVID-19 as compared tohealthy subjects. There was a highly significant increasing(p < 0.01) in hepcidin and PCT level in patients with severe infection comparing to other catgaries.The current study also revealed that the sensitivity values of the markers were: 0.88%, 0.85 for procalcitonin and hepcidin respectively, which indicate high diagnostic power. CONCLUSION Conclusions: Serum levels of hepcidin and procalcitonin are increased as inflammatory markers in COVID-19 patients with relatively high sensitivity. It seems that these imflammatory markers obviously elevate in the severe cases COVID-19dusease.

Abstract
COVID-19 disease has been identified to cause remarkable increase of mucormycosis infection cases in India, with the majority of cases being observed in individuals recovering from COVID-19. Mucormycosis has emanated as an outcome of the recent COVID-19 pandemic outbreak as rapidly developing fatal illness which was acquired by Mucorales fungus which is a subcategory of molds known as mucormycetes. Mucormycosis is one of the serious, sporadic mycotic illnesses which is a great threat to immunocompromised COVID-19 patients and affects people of all ages, including children with COVID-19 infections. This is associated with tissue damaging property and, therefore, causes serious clinical complications and elevated death rate. The COVID-19-associated mucormycosis or "black fungus" are the terms used interchangeably. The rapid growth of tissue necrosis presenting as "rhino-orbital-cerebral, pulmonary, cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and disseminated disease" are various clinical forms of mucormycosis. The patient's prognosis and survival can be improved with proper surgeries using an endoscopic approach for local tissue protection in conjunction with course of appropriate conventional antifungal drug like Amphotericin-B and novel drugs like Rezafungin, encochleated Amphotericin B, Orolofim, and SCY-078 which have been explored in last few years. This review provides an overview of mucormycosis including its epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, its clinical forms, and therapeutic approaches for disease management like antifungal therapy, surgical debridement, and iron chelators. The published patents and ongoing clinical trials related to mucormycosis have also been mentioned in this review.

Abstract
Background SARS-COV-2, in most cases, only generates a mild acute respiratory disease. However, patients with severe disease show an exaggerated response of the immune system, creating a pro-inflammatory state, which could cause abnormalities in the coagulation system that increases mortality. Latin American countries, specially those with limited resources, have few studies about clinical features, coagulation and inflammatory biomarkers that could be useful at admission to assess poor outcomes. Objective The objective of this study is to describe the clinical features, coagulation, and inflammatory biomarkers, and identify risk factors at admission that are associated poor outcomes in Honduran population. Methods A cohort study was conducted. 210 patients were included, which 105 died during hospitalization due to COVID-19 and 105 were discharged alive, between September 2020 and January 2021. Clinical and laboratorial data was retrospectively collected. Results 57,6% of the population were male. The median age was 58 years. The median time between symptom onset and hospital admission was 6 days. D-dimer median was higher in the dead group compared with the alive group. Poor prognosis factors in the Cox multivariable model were male gender, age, symptom's duration, obesity and an elevated d dimer at admission. Conclusion In low-middle income countries, the assessment of these clinical and laboratory tools, especially in those with risk factors for prothrombotic states, could help clinicians to correctly stratify disease prognosis, establish a baseline to evaluate further evolution, and also predict outcomes, thus improving patient management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to identify the relationship between abnormal serum uric acid levels or a history of hyperuricemia and COVID-19 severity in the Japanese population. METHODS We included 1523 patients enrolled in the Japan COVID-19 Task Force cohort between February 2020 and May 2021. We compared the clinical characteristics, including co-morbidities, laboratory findings, and outcomes, particularly invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), among patients with and without abnormal uric acid levels or a history of hyperuricemia. RESULTS Patients with high serum uric acid levels were older and had higher body weight and body mass index than those without. In addition, the multiple logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association between high serum uric acid levels or a history of hyperuricemia and an increased risk of IMV (odds ratio [OR] = 1.77; P = 0.03/OR = 1.56; P = 0.04). Moreover, patients with low uric acid levels on admission were also associated significantly with the requirement of IMV (OR = 5.09; P <0.0001). CONCLUSION Abnormal serum uric acid levels or a history of hyperuricemia were significantly associated with COVID-19 severity in the Japanese cohort.

Abstract
Background: Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic is a worldwide public health problem that has been known in China since December 25, 2019. Phospholipids are structural components of the mammalian cytoskeleton and cell membranes. They suppress viral attachment to the plasma membrane and subsequent replication in lung cells. In the virus-infected lung, phospholipids are highly prone to oxidation by reactive oxygen species, leading to the production of oxidized phospholipids (OxPLs). Objective: This study was carried out to explain the correlation between the level of plasma phospholipids in patients with COVID-19 infection and the levels of cytokine storms to assess the severity of the disease. Methods: Plasma samples from 34 enrolled patients with mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19 infection were collected. Complete blood count (CBC), plasma levels of D-dimer, ferritin, C-reactive protein (CRP), cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), phospholipids, secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2)α2, and cytokine storms were estimated, and lung computed tomography (CT) imaging was detected. Results: The CBC picture showed the presence of leukopenia, lymphopenia, and eosinopenia in patients with COVID-19 infection. Furthermore, a significant increase was found in plasma levels of D-dimer, CRP, ferritin, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and IL-13 as well as sPLA2α2 activity compared to normal persons. However, plasma levels of phospholipids decreased in patients with moderate and severe COVID-19 infection, as well as significantly decreased in levels of triacylglycerols and HDL-C in plasma from patients with severe infection only, compared to normal persons. Furthermore, a lung CT scan showed the presence of inflammation in a patient with mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19 infection. Conclusions: This study shows that there is a correlation between plasma phospholipid depletion and elevated cytokine storm in patients with COVID-19 infection. Depletion of plasma phospholipid levels in patients with COVID-19 infection is due to oxidative stress, induction of cytokine storm, and systemic inflammatory response after endothelial cell damage promote coagulation. According to current knowledge, patients with COVID-19 infection may need to administer surfactant replacement therapy and sPLA2 inhibitors to treat respiratory distress syndrome, which helps them to maintain the interconnected surfactant structures.
