Generating Realistic Brain MRIs via a Conditional Diffusion Probabilistic Model

As acquiring MRIs is expensive, neuroscience studies struggle to attain a sufficient number of them for properly training deep learning models. This challenge could be reduced by MRI synthesis, for which Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are popular. GANs, however, are commonly unstable and struggle with creating diverse and high-quality data. A more stable alternative is Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DPMs) with a fine-grained training strategy. To overcome their need for extensive computational resources, we propose a conditional DPM (cDPM) with a memory-efficient process that generates realistic-looking brain MRIs. To this end, we train a 2D cDPM to generate an MRI subvolume conditioned on another subset of slices from the same MRI. By generating slices using arbitrary combinations between condition and target slices, the model only requires limited computational resources to learn interdependencies between slices even if they are spatially far apart. After having learned these dependencies via an attention network, a new anatomy-consistent 3D brain MRI is generated by repeatedly applying the cDPM. Our experiments demonstrate that our method can generate high-quality 3D MRIs that share a similar distribution to real MRIs while still diversifying the training set. KG-MFEND: an efficient knowledge graph-based model for multi-domain fake news detection

The widespread dissemination of fake news on social media brings adverse effects on the public and social development. Most existing techniques are limited to a single domain (e.g., medicine or politics) to identify fake news. However, many differences exist commonly across domains, such as word usage, which lead to those methods performing poorly in other domains. In the real world, social media releases millions of news pieces in diverse domains every day. Therefore, it is of significant practical importance to propose a fake news detection model that can be applied to multiple domains. In this paper, we propose a novel framework based on knowledge graphs (KG) for multi-domain fake news detection, named KG-MFEND. The model's performance is enhanced by improving the BERT and integrating external knowledge to alleviate domain differences at the word level. Specifically, we construct a new KG that encompasses multi-domain knowledge and injects entity triples to build a sentence tree to enrich the news background knowledge. To solve the problem of embedding space and knowledge noise, we use the soft position and visible matrix in knowledge embedding. To reduce the influence of label noise, we add label smoothing to the training. Extensive experiments are conducted on real Chinese datasets. And the results show that KG-MFEND has a strong generalization capability in single, mixed, and multiple domains and outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods for multi-domain fake news detection.

Machine Learning Approaches to Understand Cognitive Phenotypes in People With HIV

Cognitive disorders are prevalent in people with HIV (PWH) despite antiretroviral therapy. Given the heterogeneity of cognitive disorders in PWH in the current era and evidence that these disorders have different etiologies and risk factors, scientific rationale is growing for using data-driven models to identify biologically defined subtypes (biotypes) of these disorders. Here, we discuss the state of science using machine learning to understand cognitive phenotypes in PWH and their associated comorbidities, biological mechanisms, and risk factors. We also discuss methods, example applications, challenges, and what will be required from the field to successfully incorporate machine learning in research on cognitive disorders in PWH. These topics were discussed at the National Institute of Mental Health meeting on "Biotypes of CNS Complications in People Living with HIV" held in October 2021. These ongoing research initiatives seek to explain the heterogeneity of cognitive phenotypes in PWH and their associated biological mechanisms to facilitate clinical management and tailored interventions.

Triplet attention and dual-pool contrastive learning for clinic-driven multi-label medical image classification

Multi-label classification (MLC) can attach multiple labels on single image, and has achieved promising results on medical images. But existing MLC methods still face challenging clinical realities in practical use, such as: (1) medical risks arising from misclassification, (2) sample imbalance problem among different diseases, (3) inability to classify the diseases that are not pre-defined (unseen diseases). Here, we design a hybrid label to improve the flexibility of MLC methods and alleviate the sample imbalance problem. Specifically, in the labeled training set, we remain independent labels for high-frequency diseases with enough samples and use a hybrid label to merge low-frequency diseases with fewer samples. The hybrid label can also be used to put unseen diseases in practical use. In this paper, we propose Triplet Attention and Dual-pool Contrastive Learning (TA-DCL) for multi-label medical image classification based on the aforementioned label representation. TA-DCL architecture is a triplet attention network (TAN), which combines category-attention, self-attention and cross-attention together to learn high-quality label embeddings for all disease labels by mining effective information from medical images. DCL includes dual-pool contrastive training (DCT) and dual-pool contrastive inference (DCI). DCT optimizes the clustering centers of label embeddings belonging to different disease labels to improve the discrimination of label embeddings. DCI relieves the error classification of sick cases for reducing the clinical risk and improving the ability to detect unseen diseases by contrast of differences. TA-DCL is validated on two public medical image datasets, ODIR and NIH-ChestXray14, showing superior performance than other state-of-the-art MLC methods.
