Abstract
Surfactant containing wastewater widely exists in textile industry, which hardly to be treated by membrane technology due to its high in salinity and wetting potential. In this study, PVDF membrane was modified by constructing a PDMS-SiO2-PDMS "sandwich" structure on top of its surface via coating to achieve resistance to surfactant induced wetting. The "sandwich" layer was optimized based on the membrane performance during membrane distillation. Compared to the pristine PVDF membrane with contact angle of 92°, the water contact angle of the membrane with a "sandwich" layer of 0.44 μm increased to 153°. For the feed contained 0.5 wt% NaCl and 0.25 wt% surfactant, there was no membrane wetting occurred during the experiment period using the membrane with a "sandwich" structure, in comparison to the pristine PVDF membrane being wetted from beginning. For a challenge experiment to the developed membrane lasting for 100 h using a surfactant containing feed, there is no wetting sign observed and the stable flux is 20 kg·m-2·h-1.

Abstract
The microalgal-bacterial symbiotic (MBS) system shows great advantages in the synchronous implementation of wastewater treatment and nutrient recovery. To enhance the understanding of different MBS systems, this review summarizes reported MBS systems and proposes three patterns according to the living state of microalgae and bacteria. They are free microalgal-bacterial (FMB) system, attached microalgal-bacterial (AMB) system and bioflocculated microalgal-bacterial (BMB) system. Compared with the other two patterns, BMB system shows the advantages of microalgal biomass harvesting and application. To further understand the microalgal-bacterial partnerships in the bioflocculation of BMB system, this review discusses bioflocs characteristics, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) properties and production, and the effect of microalgae/bacteria ratio and microalgal strains on the formation of bioflocculation. Microalgal biomass production and application are important for BMB system development in the future. Food processing wastewater characterized by high biodegradability and low toxicity should be conducive for microalgal cultivation. In addition, exogenous addition of functional bacteria for nutrient removal and bioflocculation formation would be a crucial research direction to facilitate the large-scale application of BMB system.

Abstract
Although membrane distillation (MD) has been identified as a promising technology to treat hypersaline wastewaters, its practical applications face two prominent challenges: membrane wetting and fouling. Herein, we report a facile and scalable approach for fabricating a Janus MD membrane comprising a dense polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) surface layer and a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane substrate. By testing the Janus membrane in direct contact MD experiments using feeds containing a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant or/and mineral oil, we demonstrated that the dense Janus membrane can simultaneously resist wetting and fouling. This method represents the simplest approach to date for fabricating MD membranes with simultaneous wetting and fouling resistance. Importantly, we also unveil the mechanism of wetting resistance by measuring the breakthrough pressure and surfactant permeation (through the PVA layer) and found that wetting resistance imparted by a dense hydrophilic layer is attributable to capillary pressure. This new insight will potentially change the paradigm of fabricating wetting-resistant membranes and enable robust applications of MD and other membrane contactor processes facing challenges of pore wetting or/and membrane fouling.

Abstract
The CO2 separation from flue gas based on membrane technology has drawn great attention in the last few decades. In this work, polyetherimide (PEI) hollow fibers were fabricated by using a dry-jet-wet spinning technique. Subsequently, the composite hollow fiber membranes were prepared by dip coating of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) selective layer on the outer surface of PEI hollow fibers. The hollow fibers spun from various spinning conditions were fully characterized. The influence of hollow fiber substrates on the CO2/N2 separation performance of PDMS/PEI composite membranes was estimated by gas permeance and ideal selectivity. The prepared composite membrane where the hollow fiber substrate was spun from 20 wt% of dope solution, 12 mL/min of bore fluid (water) flow rate exhibited the highest ideal selectivity equal to 21.3 with CO2 permeance of 59 GPU. It was found that the dope concentration, bore fluid flow rate and bore fluid composition affect the porous structure, surface morphology and dimension of hollow fibers. The bore fluid composition significantly influenced the gas permeance and ideal selectivity of the PDMS/PEI composite membrane. The prepared PDMS/PEI composite membranes possess comparable CO2/N2 separation performance to literature ones.

Abstract
Electrospinning is one of the most important methods used for the production of nanostructured materials. Electrospun nanofibers are used in a wide spectrum of applications such as drug delivery systems, filtration, fog harvesting, tissue engineering, smart textiles, flexible electronics, and more. Control of the manufacturing process is essential for further technology developments. In electrospinning, relative humidity is a crucial parameter that influences nearly all the properties of the collected fibers, such as morphology, mechanical properties, liquid retention, wetting properties, phase composition, chain conformation, and surface potential. Relative humidity is a determining component of a reliable process as it governs charge dissipation and solvent evaporation. This review summarizes the electrospinning process and its applications, phase separation processes, and impact of relative humidity on the properties of polymer fibers. We investigated relative humidity effects on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymers using over 20 polymers and hundreds of solvent systems. Most importantly, we underlined the indisputable importance of relative humidity in process repeatability and demonstrated its impact on almost all aspects of fiber production from a solution droplet to an electrospun network.

Abstract
In this research work, novel perfluorooctanoic acid-modified melamine (PFOM) was synthesized as a hydrophobic filler using a facile one-pot synthesis. PFOM incorporating polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) solution was cast on a cellulose sheet to prepare a dual-layered membrane employing the phase-inversion technique for direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) application. The influence of PFOM to tailor the dual-layered membrane performance was then investigated. The long perfluoro chain in PFOM hydrophobic fillers increased the surface roughness of the membranes due to its random overlapping with PVDF backbone, and these membranes exhibited a higher water contact angle value. The increase in pore size and membrane porosity did not significantly influence the liquid entry pressure of water (LEPw). The microporous membranes displayed good mechanical strength for use in the test setup. Pure water permeation was the highest (6.9 kg m-2 h-1) for membrane (M1) with 1 wt% of PFOM when tested with a simulated sea-water solution (3.5% w/v NaCl) in the direct contact distillation mode. These membranes also achieved the theoretical salt-rejection of 99.9%, thus confirming the potential of these membranes to be investigated for large scale membrane distillation (MD) applications like desalination of seawater.

Abstract
To observe feasibility of membrane distillation (MD) as post-treatment for anaerobic fluidized bed membrane bioreactor (AFMBR), removals of organic and total nitrogen were investigated by using the commercial polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membrane for direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) at various operational conditions. Test solutions for MD experiments were permeate produced by staged AFMBR (SAF-MBR), permeate from single AFMBR and synthetic wastewater fed to both reactors. Increasing in feed temperature improved permeate flux through PVDF membrane, but it decreased total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency. Effect of chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations in feed solutions for DCMD on TN removal efficiency was almost negligible. However, the COD removal efficiency was lower at lower feed concentration in DCMD operation. At constant feed temperature, TN removal efficiency was improved by increasing a recirculation flow rate on PVDF membrane across DCMD system. Both organic and inorganic fouling were observed on PVDF membrane surface and pore matrix after conducting DCMD operation. The organic fouling on PVDF membrane consisted mainly of protein and fatty acids, supporting that the permeate produced by AFMBR should have potentials to foul the membrane applied in DCMD system as post-treatment.

Abstract
Membrane distillation (MD) has been touted as a promising technology for niche applications such as desalination of surfactant- and oil-containing feed streams. Hitherto, the deployment of conventional hydrophobic MD membranes for such applications is limited and unsatisfactory. This is because the presence of surfactants and oils in aqueous feed streams reduces the surface-tension of these media significantly and the attachment of these contaminants onto hydrophobic membrane surfaces often leads to membrane fouling and pore wetting, which compromises on the quantity and quality of water recovered. Endowing MD membranes with surfaces of special wettabilities has been proposed as a strategy to combat membrane fouling and pore wetting. This involves the design of local kinetic energy barriers such as multilevel re-entrant surface structures, surfaces with ultralow surface-energies, and interfacial hydration layers to impede transition to the fully-wetted Wenzel state. This review critiques the state-of-the-art fabrication and surface-modification methods as well as practices used in the development of omniphobic and Janus MD membranes with specific emphasis on the advances, challenges, and future improvements for application in challenging surfactant- and oil-containing feed streams.

Abstract
Increasing water demand coupled with projected climate change puts the Southwestern United States at the highest risk of water sustainability by 2050. Membrane distillation offers a unique opportunity to utilize the substantial, but largely untapped geothermal brackish groundwater for desalination to lessen the stress. Two types of hydrophobic, microporous hollow fiber membranes (HFMs), including polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), were evaluated for their effectiveness in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). Water flux and salt rejection were measured as a function of module packing density and length in lab-scale systems. The PVDF HFMs generally exhibited higher water flux than the PTFE HFMs possibly due to thinner membrane wall and higher porosity. As the packing density or module length increased, water flux declined. The water production rate per module, however, increased due to the larger membrane surface area. A pilot-scale DCMD system was deployed to the 2nd largest geothermally-heated greenhouse in the United States for field testing over a duration of about 22 days. The results demonstrated the robustness of the DCMD system in the face of environmental fluctuation at the facility.

Abstract
To improve the mechanical properties of the electrospun nanofibrous membrane, the nonwoven fabrics and spacer fabrics were employed as support substrates to fabricate polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibrous composite membranes. The influences of the substrate on membrane morphology, hydrophobicity, pore size and pore size distribution, porosity, mechanical strength and permeability were comprehensive evaluated. The electrospun composite membranes had a three dimension bead-fiber interconnected open structure and a rough membrane surface. The membrane surface presented a multilevel re-entrant structure and all the water contact angles were above 140°. In contrast with the pure PVDF nanofibrous membrane, the stress at break and the elastic modulus of the composite membranes increased by 4.5-16 times and 17.5-37 times, respectively. Since the spacer fabrics had less resistance to mass transfer, the membranes composited with spacer fabrics exhibited greater permeate fluxes compared with the composite membranes with the nonwoven fabrics as substrates. During the membrane distillation test, the highest permeate flux was up to 49.3kg/m2/hr at the feed temperature of 80°C. The long-time and repeat operation of membrane distillation desalination indicated the fabricated membrane with a good resistance to scaling and wetting. The results suggested the potential of the electrospun composite membrane for membrane distillation application.

Abstract
Fat, oil and grease in wastewater generated from household kitchens, restaurants and food processing plants affect sewer systems, water resources and environment adversely. Hence, membrane distillation of saline and oily water was studied using a nearly superhydrophobic membrane developed in this work. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane incorporated SiO2 nanoparticles was synthesized via phase inversion with dual baths and modified using hexadecyltrimethoxy silane. The volume ratio of silane to ethanol was varied between 1:200 to 1:25. The membrane characteristics were examined using a goniometer, a porometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The PVDF-SiO2 membrane modified using the volume ratio of 1:50 achieved the highest water contact angle of 141.6° and LEP of 2.642 bar. This membrane was further tested in membrane distillation to observe the permeate flux of distilled water, saline solution (1 M NaCl) as well as saline and oily solution (1 M NaCl; 1,000 ppm of palm oil). The modified PVDF/SiO2 showed high permeate flux which is nearly four times of the permeate flux of neat PVDF membrane, but still susceptible of salt and oil fouling as shown in SEM images.

Abstract
Membrane distillation techniques have appeared as promising options for guaranteeing the availability of potable water in times of scarcity of this essential resource. For membrane preparation, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is preferred due to the easier synthesis procedures, with respect to other fluorine-based polymers. In this work, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) of different weight percent (wt %) embedded in PVDF membranes supported on non-woven polyester fabric (NWPET) were prepared by the phase inversion method, and characterized by spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR, Raman) and electron microscopy techniques (SEM). The PVDF deposited onto the NWPET was mostly composed of its polar β-phase (F(β) = 53%), which was determined from the ATR-FTIR spectrum. The F(β) value remained constant throughout the whole range of added CuONP concentrations (2–10 wt %), as was determined from the ATR-FTIR spectrum. The absence of signals corresponding to CuONPs in the ATR-FTIR spectra and the appearance of peaks at 297, 360, and 630 cm−1 in the Raman spectra of the membranes suggest that the CuONPs are preferably located in the inner PVDF membrane, but not on its surface. The membrane morphologies were characterized by SEM. From the obtained SEM micrographs, a decrease and increase in the amount of micropores and nanopores, respectively, near the surface and intercalated in the finger-like layer were observed. As a result of the CuONP addition, the nanopores in the sponge-like layer decreased in size. The values of water contact angle (WCA) measurements showed a decreasing trend, from 94° to 80°, upon the addition of CuONPs (2–10 wt %), indicating a diminishment in the hydrophobicity degree of the membranes. Apparently, the increase in the amount of nanopores near the surface decreased the membrane roughness, so it became less hydrophobic.

Abstract
In this study, we fabricated a composite membrane for membrane distillation (MD) by modifying a commercial hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane with a nanocomposite coating comprising silica nanoparticles, chitosan hydrogel and fluoro-polymer. The composite membrane exhibits asymmetric wettability, with the modified surface being in-air hydrophilic and underwater oleophobic, and the unmodified surface remaining hydrophobic. By comparing the performance of the composite membrane and the pristine PVDF membrane in direct contact MD experiments using a saline emulsion with 1000 ppm crude oil (in water), we showed that the fabricated composite membrane was significantly more resistant to oil fouling compared to the pristine hydrophobic PVDF membrane. Force spectroscopy was conducted for the interaction between an oil droplet and the membrane surface using a force tensiometer. The difference between the composite membrane and the pristine PVDF membrane in their interaction with an oil droplet served to explain the difference in the fouling propensities between these two membranes observed in MD experiments. The results from this study suggest that underwater oleophobic coating can effectively mitigate oil fouling in MD operations, and that the fabricated composite membrane with asymmetric wettability can enable MD to desalinate hypersaline wastewater with high concentrations of hydrophobic contaminants.

Abstract
Direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) was used to treat low level radioactive wastewater (LLRW). The dusty gas model (DGM) was used to analyze the mass transfer mechanism and calculate the permeate flux. The operating parameters such as feed temperature, feed velocity and feed concentration were studied. The experimental results showed that DCMD process can separate almost all Cs(+), Sr(2+) and Co(2+) from wastewater. The permeate flux decreased linearly when NaNO3 concentration increased from 1.0 to 200 g/L. The permeate flux remained about 60% of its initial flux even when NaNO3 concentration in feed solution was as high as 200 g/L. The dusty gas model can be successfully applied to estimate the mass transfer, and the experimental permeate flux values fitted well with that calculated by DGM. DCMD is a promising separation process for low level radioactive wastewater treatment.
