Unveiling the spatiotemporal dynamics of membrane fouling: A focused review on dynamic fouling characterization techniques and future perspectives

Membrane technology has emerged as a crucial method for obtaining clean water from unconventional sources in the face of water scarcity. It finds wide applications in wastewater treatment, advanced treatment, and desalination of seawater and brackish water. However, membrane fouling poses a huge challenge that limits the development of membrane-based water treatment technologies. Characterizing the dynamics of membrane fouling is crucial for understanding its development, mechanisms, and effective mitigation. Instrumental techniques that enable in situ or real-time characterization of the dynamics of membrane fouling provide insights into the temporal and spatial evolution of fouling, which play a crucial role in understanding the fouling mechanism and the formulation of membrane control strategies. This review consolidates existing knowledge about the principal advanced instrumental analysis technologies employed to characterize the dynamics of membrane fouling, in terms of membrane structure, morphology, and intermolecular forces. Working principles, applications, and limitations of each technique are discussed, enabling researchers to select appropriate methods for their specific studies. Furthermore, prospects for the future development of dynamic characterization techniques for membrane fouling are discussed, underscoring the need for continued research and innovation in this field to overcome the challenges posed by membrane fouling.

In Situ Incorporation of TiO2@Graphene Oxide (GO) Nanosheets in Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-Based Membranes Matrix for Ultrafast Protein Separation

Organic polymeric ultrafiltration (UF) membranes have been widely used in protein separation due to their advantages of high flux and simple manufacturing process. However, due to the hydrophobic nature of the polymer, pure polymeric UF membranes need to be modified or hybrid to increase their flux and anti-fouling performance. In this work, tetrabutyl titanate (TBT) and graphene oxide (GO) were simultaneously added to the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) casting solution to prepare a TiO₂@GO/PAN hybrid ultrafiltration membrane using a non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS). During the phase separation process, TBT underwent a sol-gel reaction to generate hydrophilic TiO₂ nanoparticles in situ. Some of the generated TiO₂ nanoparticles reacted with the GO through a chelation interaction to form TiO₂@GO nanocomposites. The resulting TiO₂@GO nanocomposites had higher hydrophilicity than the GO. They could selectively segregate towards the membrane surface and pore walls through the solvent and non-solvent exchange during the NIPS, significantly improving the membrane's hydrophilicity. The remaining TiO₂ nanoparticles were segregated from the membrane matrix to increase the membrane's porosity. Furthermore, the interaction between the GO and TiO₂ also restricted the excessive segregation of the TiO₂ nanoparticles and reduced their losing. The resulting TiO₂@GO/PAN membrane had a water flux of 1487.6 L·m^-2·h^-1 and a bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection rate of 99.5%, which were much higher than those of the currently available UF membranes. It also exhibited excellent anti-protein fouling performance. Therefore, the prepared TiO₂@GO/PAN membrane has important practical applications in the field of protein separation.

Preparation and Characterization of PVDF-TiO2 Mixed-Matrix Membrane with PVP and PEG as Pore-Forming Agents for BSA Rejection

Polymeric membranes offer straightforward modification methods that make industry scaling affordable and easy; however, these materials are hydrophobic, prone to fouling, and vulnerable to extreme operating conditions. Various attempts were made in this study to fix the challenges in using polymeric membranes and create mixed-matrix membrane (MMMs) with improved properties and hydrophilicity by adding titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and pore-forming agents to hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The PVDF mixed-matrix ultrafiltration membranes in this study were made using the non-solvent phase inversion approach which is a simple and effective method for increasing the hydrophilic nature of membranes. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as pore-forming chemicals were created. Pure water flux, BSA flux, and BSA rejection were calculated to evaluate the mixed-matrix membrane's efficiency. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution was employed in this study to examine the protein rejection ability. Increases in hydrophilicity, viscosity, and flux in pure water and BSA solution were achieved using PVP and PEG additives. The PVDF membrane's hydrophilicity was raised with the addition of TiO₂, showing an increased contact angle to 71°. The results show that the PVDF-PVP-TiO₂ membrane achieved its optimum water flux of 97 L/(m²h) while the PVDF-PEG-TiO₂ membrane rejected BSA at a rate greater than 97%. The findings demonstrate that use of a support or additive improved filtration performance compared to a pristine polymeric membrane by increasing its hydrophilicity.

Electrochemical quantification of atrazine-fulvic acid and removal through bismuth tungstate photocatalytic hybrid membranes

Herbicides such as atrazine and humus substances such as fulvic acid are widely used in agricultural sector. They can be traced in surface and groundwater around the agriculture field at concentrations beyond the approved limit due to their mobility and persistence. Bismuth-based photocatalysts activated by visible light are potential materials for removing various organic pollutants from water bodies. These photocatalysts can also be suitable candidates for developing a hybrid membrane with anti-fouling properties. In this study, Bi2WO6 nanoparticles were synthesized via the hydrothermal method and integrated into the cellulose acetate (CA), polyetherimide (PEI), polysulfone (PSF) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymers via physical blending approach. The hybrid membranes were then characterized by FTIR, XPS and FESEM to confirm the chemical bonding, chemical composition and surface morphology of Bi2WO6. Thus, the pure water flux of CA (35.6 L m-2 h-1), PEI (46.56 L m-2 h-1), PSF (6.84 L m-2 h-1), and PVDF (68.47 L m-2 h-1) hybrid membranes has significantly enhanced than the pristine CA, PEI, PSF and PVDF membranes. The significant rejection of atrazine-fulvic acid was observed with hybrid membranes in the order of CA (84.1%) > PVDF (72.7%) > PEI (47.8%) > PSF (37.2%), and these membranes have shown an excellent flux recovery ratio than pristine membranes. Further, electrochemical quantification studies were performed to analyze the removal efficiency of atrazine-fulvic acid from water. In this present work, GO-modified SPE was employed for electrochemical sensing studies. The resultant CA hybrid membrane achieved removal efficiency of 84.08% for atrazine. It was observed that the Bi2WO6 established strong bonding with CA, and PVDF membranes, thus showing a significant removal efficiency and FRR than other hybrid and pristine membranes.

Preparation of Nano-TiO2-Modified PVDF Membranes with Enhanced Antifouling Behaviors via Phase Inversion: Implications of Nanoparticle Dispersion Status in Casting Solutions

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles have been applied in membrane antifouling performance modification for years. However, the influence of TiO2 nanoparticle dispersion status during the blending process on membrane properties and the inner mechanism has seldom been focused on. Herein, we investigated the influence of the various dispersing statuses of TiO2 nanoparticles on membrane properties and antifouling performance by exploring various blending processes without changing the original recipe. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was employed as a pore-forming agent during the membrane preparation process, and also as a pre-dispersing agent for the TiO2 nanoparticles via the steric hindrance effect. Compared to the original preparation process of the PVDF/TiO2 composite membrane, the pre-dispersing of TiO2 via PEG ensured a modified membrane with uniform surface pores and structures on cross-sectional morphologies, larger porosity and water permeability, and more negative zeta potential. The contact angle was decreased by 6.0%, implying better hydrophilicity. The improved antifouling performance was corroborated by the increasing free energy of cohesion and adhesion, the interaction energy barrier (0.43 KT) between the membrane surfaces and approaching foulants assessed by classic XDLVO theory and the low flux decline in the filtration experiment. A kinetics mechanism analysis of the casting solutions, which found a low TSI value (<1.0), substantiated that the pre-dispersion of TiO2 with PEG contributed to the high stability and ultimately favorable antifouling behaviors. This study provides an optimized approach to the preparation of excellent nano-TiO2/polymeric composite membranes applied in the municipal sewage treatment field.

Mechanistic insight into pH-dependent adsorption and coprecipitation of chelated heavy metals by in-situ formed iron (oxy)hydroxides

Fe(III) coagulation-precipitation process has been widely used to remove heavy metals from industrial effluents; however, the influences of organic ligands on the sequestration of different heavy metals in the Fe(III)/metal-EDTA ternary system are not well understood. In this study, the pH-dependent mechanisms of Cu^II-EDTA and Ni^II-EDTA removed by in-situ formed iron (oxy)hydroxides were studied using surface complex modeling and a suite of characterization techniques. Results of surface complex model indicated that there should be minimal difference between removal of Cu^II-EDTA and Ni^II-EDTA by iron (oxy)hydroxides if adsorption was the dominant mechanism. However, through the speciation analysis and characterization of the precipitates generated after coagulation and precipitation, we have demonstrated that at neutral pH the complexation of Fe(III) and EDTA influenced the surface properties of iron (oxy)hydroxides formed, with the higher removal of Cu²⁺ (compared to Ni²⁺) contributed by its coprecipitation with Fe(III). Moreover, at basic pH, decomplexation of Cu^II-EDTA occurred on the iron (oxy)hydroxides surface with the released copper ions involved in the formation of (oxy)hydroxides. The low removal of nickel (from Ni^II-EDTA) was ascribed to the higher conditional stability constant of Ni^II-EDTA. Results of this study have advanced our understanding of the complicated interactions among Fe(III), organic ligands and heavy metals in the industrial effluents, and provide insight to optimization of the process efficiency.

Polymer Nanocomposite Ultrafiltration Membranes: the Influence of Polymeric Additive, Dispersion Quality and Particle Modification on the Integration of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles into Polyvinylidene Difluoride Membranes

This study aims to improve the understanding of the influence of metal oxide nanofillers on polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes. Zinc oxide nanoparticles were chosen as the model filler material. The membranes were prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation from PVDF solutions in N-methylpyrrolidone. The influences of the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), the nanoparticle dispersion quality, and a surface modification of the ZnO particles with PVP on the nanofiller integration into the polymer matrix and the resulting membrane separation performance, were evaluated. Unmodified and PVP-modified nanoparticles were characterized by evaluation of their Hansen solubility parameters. The membranes were characterized by ultrafiltration experiments, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and with respect to mechanical properties, while the dope solutions were analyzed by rheology in order to judge about dispersion quality. Pure water permeability and solute rejection data revealed that the dominant effect of the addition of pristine ZnO nanoparticles was a major decrease in permeability caused by pore blocking. In SEM analyses, it was seen that the plain nanofiller did not integrate well into the polymer matrix. Importantly, it was found that the surface modification of the nanofiller, as well as a high dispersion quality, can be strategically used to enhance the integration of the nanofiller and thus suppress pore blocking, leading to membranes with high ultrafiltration rejection and permeability simultaneously. Overall, the study provides relevant insights into a new approach to integrating nanofillers into polymer nanocomposite membranes for improving their properties and performance.

Comparison of novel functionalized nanofiber forward osmosis membranes for application in antibacterial activity and TRGs rejection

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are serious pollutants in municipal sewage treatment plants and may cause significant harm to ecological systems, microbial fouling is also inevitable in membrane process. Herein, novel forward osmosis (FO) membranes made of electrospun nanofibers (TFN0) and further impregnated with titanium dioxide (TiO₂) (TFN1) nanoparticles and titanium dioxide/silver composite nanoparticles (TiO₂/AgNPs) (TFN2). The FO membranes were used to compare the antimicrobial performance and rejection of tetracycline-resistant genes (TRGs). Characterizations revealed that the TiO₂/AgNPs were evenly scattered in the polysulfone (PSf) nanofibers and resulted in a TFN2 membrane that exhibited excellent physicochemical properties, filtration, and antibiofouling performance in real wastewater. The cell viability analysis revealed that the antibacterial effect of the TFN2 membranes was significantly better than that of TFN1, as indicated by about 65 % of E. coli cells killed after contact with the TFN2 membrane. TFN2 membranes had greater rejection rates of TRB and TRGs than TFN1. The TRG permeation rates of the TFN2 membrane in the FO mode (active layer facing the feed solution) were 39.62 % and 33.02 % lower than the TFN0 and TFN1 membranes, respectively. FO membranes modified by the TiO₂/AgNPs nanocomposites hold promise to remove ARGs and pathogens from wastewater treatment plant effluents.

In-situ coating TiO2 surface by plant-inspired tannic acid for fabrication of thin film nanocomposite nanofiltration membranes toward enhanced separation and antibacterial performance

A major issue hindering development of thin film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofiltration (NF) membrane is the interfacial defects induced by nanomaterial aggregation in top layer. Although various nanomaterials surface modification strategies have been developed to eliminate the interfacial defects, they usually involve extra modification steps and complex post-treatments. Inspired by the substrate-independent coating ability of tannic acid (TA) and the fact that the phenolic hydroxyl groups in TA can react with acyl chloride group in trimesoyl chloride, a TA coating solution containing TiO₂ nanoparticles was used as an aqueous phase of interfacial polymerization to prepare interfacial modified TFN NF membranes in this study. Surface modification of TiO₂ nanoparticles and interfacial polymerization can be carried out in a single step without any extra pre-modification step. It was found that the TA coating on TiO₂ nanoparticles surface could decrease TiO₂ aggregations and enhance interfacial compatibility between TiO₂ and polyester matrix. The TFN NF membrane prepared at a TiO₂ loading of 0.020 wt% exhibited a pure water flux of 28.8 L m^-2 h^-1 (284% higher than that of the controlled TFC membrane), and possessed enhanced NaCl and Na₂SO₄ rejections of 57.9% and 94.6%, respectively, breaking through the trade-off between permeability and selectivity.

Alleviating membrane fouling of modified polysulfone membrane via coagulation pretreatment/ultrafiltration hybrid process

In this study, ultrafiltration membrane fouling was alleviated by hydrophilic modification and coagulation pretreatment. A polydopamine (PDA) layer was used as a bridge to introduce the nano titanium dioxide (TiO₂) onto the polysulfone (PSf) membranes, forming a hydrophilic modified layer. A relationship model was established between the coagulation efficiencies and floc properties and membrane fouling of the modified PSf membranes during the coagulation/ultrafiltration (C-UF) process. The combination styles of flocculants, poly dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (PDMDAAC) and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) were used in C-UF hybrid process. The characterization results indicated that the hydrophilicity was significantly enhanced in the modified PSf membranes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests proved that the PDA layer could be tightly bound to TiO₂ by coordination bond onto PSf membrane surface. In the acidic conditions, more TiO₂ nano-particles were adhered on the PDA particles surface as the pH of (NH₄)₂TiF₆ solution was increased, which resulted in higher hydrophilicity of membranes. In addition, the C-UF tests exhibited that the coagulation efficiency was greatly improved in the PAC/PDMDAAC system, and the PSf membrane modified by PDA/TiO₂ in UF tests significantly reduced the membrane fouling, this was partially due to the formation of TiO₂ modified coating with higher hydrophilicity.

Constructing Antifouling Hybrid Membranes with Hierarchical Hybrid Nanoparticles for Oil-in-Water Emulsion Separation

The development of antifouling membranes plays a vital role in the widespread application of membrane technology, and the hybridization strategy has attracted a significant amount of attention for antifouling applications. In this work, TA/PEI@TiO₂ hierarchical hybrid nanoparticles (TPTi HHNs) are first synthesized through a simple strategy combining the multiple catechol chemistries of phenolic tannic acid (TA) with the biomimetic mineralization chemistry of titania. The TPTi HHNs are used as nanofillers to prepare PVDF/TPTi hybrid membranes. The TPTi HHNs endow the membrane with higher porosity, hierarchical roughness, greater hydrophilicity, and underwater superoleophobicity. Upon TPTi HHN loading, the PVDF/TPTi hybrid membranes exhibit enhanced antifouling performance. The flux recovery ratio can reach 92% when utilized to separate oil-in-water emulsion. Even being applied to the three-cycle filtration of oil-in-water emulsion with much higher concentration, the PVDF/TPTi membrane can still maintain a high flux recovery ratio about 85%. This study will provide a facial polyphenol-based platform to fabricate antifouling hybrid nanofillers and antifouling hybrid membranes with promising applications in oil/water separation.
