Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COF) have desirable properties such as high porosity, low mass density, excellent heat resistance and regulatable structure, making them an ideal candidate for membrane material. Traditional methods for preparing covalent organic framework composite membranes, such as interfacial polymerization, vacuum filtration, and covalent organic framework abrasive coating. Stand-alone COF membranes produced by the above methods usually suffer from problems such as poor mechanical properties. Here, we fabricated high performance COF composite membranes by modified casting-precipitation-evaporation method. The designed composite membranes consisted of the ionic COF (iCOF) selective layer and the support layer are applied in dye/salt separation. The high permeability (∼ 68 L h-1 m-2 bar-1), high dyes rejection (97% for Rose Bengal), and low salts rejection (∼ 2.86% for NaCl) are achieved by the iCOF functional layer. The as-prepared composite membranes have a hydrophilic and highly smooth surface, making them have good anti-fouling performance. In addition, the rigid pore structure of iCOF selective layer endows the composite membranes with excellent stability, the composite membranes maintain original structure under high pressure (6 bar) and ultrasonic treatment (16 kHz for 60 min). This work may open up a novel path to fabricate iCOF composite membranes, which exhibit great potential in dye/salt separation.

Abstract
Heavy metal pollution can significantly harm water systems and human health. Combining photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) and nanofiltration (NF) membrane separation technologies can effectively remove heavy metal ions from wastewater. In this study, a water bath method was used to form SrF2/Ti3C2Tx (ST) nanoparticles on the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes and an additional polyamide (PA) functional layer was formed at the interface by crosslinking. ST@PA composite NF membranes (STPP) with good photocatalytic performance were obtained. The separation and catalytic properties of the STPP membranes were controlled by the ST content, which modifies the surface structure and properties of the membranes. The membrane with optimal ST crosslinking exhibited a water contact angle of 50.8°, pure water flux of 24.6 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, and rejection rates of Mn2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ of 98.8%, 95.3%, 95.7%, and 97.3%, respectively, under PEC-assisted separation with visible light illumination from a Xe lamp (300 W) and an applied voltage (2 V). The STPP membranes showed improved rejection rates of heavy metal ions under PEC-assisted operation. The mechanism for the improved membrane performance under PEC conditions was preliminarily clarified considering the relationship between the photocatalytic and filtration properties of STPP membranes along with the influence of light irradiation and an external voltage on the heavy metal ions. The generation of electrons, holes, superoxide radicals, and hydroxyl radicals during membrane operation enhances the rejection rates of heavy metal ions. Based on these results, STPP membranes are considered a promising technology for industrial applications in heavy metal removal.

Abstract
The successful implementation of thin-film composite membranes (TFCM) for challenging solute-solute separations in the pharmaceutical industry requires a fine control over the microstructure (size, distribution, and connectivity of the free-volume elements) and thickness of the selective layer. For example, desalinating antibiotic streams requires highly interconnected free-volume elements of the right size to block antibiotics but allow the passage of salt ions and water. Here, we introduce stevioside, a plant-derived contorted glycoside, as a promising aqueous phase monomer for optimizing the microstructure of TFCM made via interfacial polymerization. The low diffusion rate and moderate reactivity of stevioside, together with its nonplanar and distorted conformation, produced thin selective layers with an ideal microporosity for antibiotic desalination. For example, an optimized 18-nm membrane exhibited an unprecedented combination of high water permeance (81.2 liter m-2 hour-1 bar-1), antibiotic desalination efficiency (NaCl/tetracycline separation factor of 11.4), antifouling performance, and chlorine resistance.

Organic solvent-free constructing of stable zeolitic imidazolate framework functional layer enhanced by halloysite nanotubes and polyvinyl alcohol on polyvinylidene fluoride hollow fiber membranes for treating dyeing wastewater. J Colloid Interface Sci 2023; 636:378-387. Abstract
In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) loose nanofiltration (NF) hollow fiber membranes were fabricated by constructing ZIF-8 functional layer on the PVDF supporting membranes based on the vacuum-assisted assembly process. The ZIF-8 synthesis was completed in a water system, and the synthesized ZIF-8 suspension was directly added to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) aqueous solution system without drying to prepare the casting solution, which could solve the agglomeration and poor dispersion problem of ZIF-8 particles. In addition, the embedded HNTs and the loaded PVA among the ZIF-8 layer could improve the bonding strength between the ZIF-8 layer and the supporting membranes. After constructing ZIF-8 functional layer, the pore size of supporting membranes decreased from more than 300 nm to several nanometers. Furthermore, the water contact angle reduced from 91.1° to 54.2°. Applied to treat dye wastewater, the prepared ZIF-8/PVDF membranes maintained high dye rejection (˃99.0 %) for Congo red (CR), but low salt rejection for NaCl (about 2 %). In addition, the flux could reach 21.6 L m-2h-1 after continuous filtration 360 min, exhibiting a potential for treating the dye/salt wastewater. In particular, there were no organic solvents used in the work, which provided a promising idea for solvent-free fabrication of loose NF membranes.

Abstract
Asphaltenes are recognized as being troublesome from upstream to downstream in the oil industry due to their tendency to precipitate and self-associate. Their extraction from asphaltenic crude oil for a cost-effective refining process is a crucial and critical challenge in the oil and gas sector. Lignosulfonate (LS), as a by-product of the wood pulping process in the papermaking industry, is a highly available and underutilized feedstock. This study aimed to synthesize novel LS-based ionic liquids (ILs) by reacting lignosulfonate acid sodium salt [Na]2[LS] with different alkyl chains of piperidinium chloride for asphaltene dispersion. The synthesized ILs, 1-hexyl-1-methyl-piperidinium lignosulfonate [C6C1Pip]2[LS], 1-octyl-1-methyl-piperidinium lignosulfonate [C8C1Pip]2[LS], 1-dodecyl-1-methyl-piperidinium lignosulfonate [C12C1Pip]2[LS] and 1-hexadecyl-1-methyl-piperidinium lignosulfonate [C16C1Pip]2[LS] were characterized using FTIR-ATR and 1H NMR for functional groups and structural confirmation. The ILs depicted high thermal stability because of the presence of a long side alkyl chain and piperidinium cation following thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Asphaltene dispersion indices (%) of ILs were tested by varying contact time, temperature and ILs concentration. The obtained indices were high for all ILs, with a dispersion index of more than 91.2% [C16C1Pip]2[LS], representing the highest dispersion at 50,000 ppm. It was able to lower asphaltene particle size diameter from 51 nm to 11 nm. The kinetic data of [C16C1Pip]2[LS] were consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The dispersion index (%), asphaltene particle growth and the kinetic model agreed with the molecular modeling studies of the HOMO-LUMO energy of IL holds.

Abstract
Constructing membrane with good chlorine resistance and antifouling properties is considered to be important challenges confronting membrane applications. In this study, a composite nanofiltration (NF) membrane (β-CDx/y/PES) was prepared by interfacial polymerization using beta cyclodextrin (β-CD) monomers. Subsequently, the β-CD-based (AZ-β-CDx/y/PES) membrane was prepared by assembling azobenzene labeled zwitterions into the hydrophobic internal cavity of β-CD via host-guest interaction. The optimized membrane exhibited slight change in water flux and rejection under chlorine environment. The AZ-β-CDx/y/PES membrane also displayed an evidently lower loss in water flux in the antifouling test in comparison with the β-CDx/y/PES membrane. More interestingly, the trans azo groups in azobenzene labeled zwitterions can turn into the cis isomers as the visible light irradiation converted to the UV light irradiation, breaking the interaction between azobenzene labeled zwitterions and β-CD. Hence, the contaminants upon the membrane surface can be simply eliminated by water washing under UV light irradiation. The antifouling membrane can be regenerated via immersing the reacquired β-CD2/10/PES membrane into fresh azobenzene labeled zwitterions solution again.

Abstract
Membranes based on transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) have significant water treatment potential because of their unique molecular sieving properties and excellent permeation performance. However, hydrophilic MXenes swell upon water immersion, and improving their stability remains challenging. In this study, a Fe3+-tannic acid (TA) complex was used as a cross-linker and surface modifier to prepare high-performance titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene laminar membranes. Fe3+-TA formation on the nanosheets increased the interlayer spacing and stabilized the laminar structure. The membrane with the highest performance among the as-prepared membranes exhibited a high water permeance of 90.5 L/m-2(-|-)h-1 bar-1 (which is twice that of the pristine Ti3C2Tx membrane) and good separation efficiency (methyl blue rejection rate: ∼99.8 %; Na2SO4 rejection rate: ∼5.0 %). Furthermore, the Fe3+-TA complex enhanced the membrane hydrophilicity, resulting in excellent antifouling properties. This study provides an environmentally friendly and facile method for fabricating two-dimensional loose nanofiltration membranes for textile wastewater treatment.

Abstract
The use of mesoporous silica modified with L-arginine (Ar-MSNPs) for the removal of ionic dyes from aqueous solutions has been investigated. Several analytical techniques have been used to determine the characteristics of nanoadsorbents. The removal of crystal violet and fluorescein was performed using the batch method to investigate the effects of cultivation pH, initial concentrations of dyes, and exposure time on adsorption efficiency. The optimum adsorption of fluorescein was achieved at pH 2, whereas the optimum adsorption of crystal violet was achieved at pH 13. The equilibrium was established in both systems at 20 min at low concentrations, and approximately 30 min at high concentrations. The equilibrium adsorption data was analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The correlation coefficient (R2) values of the isotherms presented the best fit with the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption kinetic data was fitted with the pseudo second-order model for both systems.

Abstract
In many important industries, such as the textile printing industry, a large amount of dye/salt wastewater is often discharged, which can destroy the ecological environment of the water body. Membrane technology has a great potential in the treatment of environmental problems caused by dye/salt wastewater. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiltration (NF) membrane has a bright future in dye/salt wastewater treatment, however, works on this are rare. Herein, antibacterial PVA NF membrane incorporated with Cu(OH)2 nanowires for the dye/salt wastewater treatment is reported. The membrane was prepared via coating the solutions containing PVA, glutaraldehyde and Cu(OH)2 nanowires on the polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane. Cu(OH)2 nanowires has a diameter of 60 nm and was successfully introduced into the membrane. The introduction of nanowires improved the membrane hydrophilicity and roughness, which is conducive to the improvement of membrane flux. Membrane separation performance for one component solution and dye/salt solution were investigated. The introduction of Cu(OH)2 increases the flux of the membrane obviously (the highest increase is 178.78% (from 21.49 to 38.42 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, for NaCl solution as the feed). Besides, the membrane doped with nanowires also possessed a high dye/salt selectivity. For one component solution, the dye removal rate was over 97.00% while the salt rejection was low (the lowest was 13.18% (NaCl)). For the dye/salt solution, the dye (Congo Red) rejection kept at a high level (98.91%) and the salt (NaCl) rejection was still low (13.71%), while the flux was also high (37.56 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1). The performance is superior to that of many membranes reported in previous works. Moreover, the Cu(OH)2 nanowires endowed the membrane with an improved and high antibacterial property. The sterilization rate of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus reached more than 99.99%.

Abstract
Removing salt from dye/salt mixtures using nanofiltration (NF) membranes needs to be improved to ensure high permeability, high selectivity, and antifouling performance. In this study, we used an interfacial polymerization (IP) technique to create a novel thin-film nanocomposite NF membrane by introducing two-dimensional MXene Ti3C2Tx into the polyamide (PA) layer. Enhanced IP reaction rate facilitated the overflow of residual solvent from the fresh PA layer's edge due to the MXene-mediated IP strategy, resulting considerable bubble-like nodules on the membrane surface. The unique nanostructure of PA effective layer could be tuned by controlling the MXene concentration in aqueous phase solution, which finally promoted the obtained membranes with superb permselectivity. In this way, the water permeability was elevated to a maximum value of 45.12 L m−1 h−1, nearly 1.58-fold compared to the PA-pristine membrane. Moreover, the Ti3C2Tx/NF membrane exhibited a superior dye/monovalent salt separation coefficient of 820, outperforming the pristine PA membrane and other NF membranes in the literature. Additionally, the MXene-assisted IP strategy designed an effective dye anti-fouling hydration layer, which played a crucial role in fouling resistance. This work illustrates a novel use of Ti3C2Tx to successfully regulate high-performance TFN PA membranes for potential application in dye/salt separation. A novel thin-film nanocomposite NF membrane with efficient dye/salt separation and antifouling performance was designed by introducing different amounts of MXene into the PA layer.![]()

Abstract
The pursuit of improved water purification technology has motivated extensive research on novel membrane materials to be carried out. In this paper, one-dimensional carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were intercalated into the interlayer space of layered double hydroxide (LDH) to form a composite membrane for water purification. The CNTs/LDH laminates were deposited on the surface of the hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration membrane through a vacuum-assisted assembly strategy. Based on the characterization of the morphology and structure of the CNTs/LDH composite membrane, it was found that the intercalation of CNT created more mass transfer channels for water molecules. Moreover, the permeance of the CNTs/LDH membrane was improved by more than 50% due to the low friction and rapid flow of water molecules in the CNT tubes. Additionally, the influence of preparation conditions on the separation performance was investigated using Evans blue (EB). Optimized fabrication conditions were given (the concentration of CoAl-LDH was 0.1 g/L and the weight ratio of CNTs was 2 wt.%). Next, the separation performances of the prepared CNTs/LDH composite membrane were evaluated using both single and mixed dye solutions. The results showed that the composite membrane obtained possessed a retention of 98% with a permeance of 2600 kg/(m2·h·MPa) for EB, which was improved by 36% compared with the pristine LDH composite membrane. Moreover, the stability of the CNTs/LDH composite membrane was investigated in 100 h with no obvious permeance drop (less than 13%), which exhibited its great potential in water purification.

Abstract
The purification of hazardous textile dyeing wastewater has exhibited many challenges because it consists of a complex mixture, including dyestuff, additives, and salts. It is necessary to fabricate membranes with enhanced permeability, fouling resistance, stability, and superior dyes and salts removal from wastewater. Incorporating a highly water stable metal-organic framework (MOFs) into membranes would meet the requirements for the efficient purification of textile wastewater. In this study, nanofiltration (NF) membranes are fabricated by incorporating MIL-100 (Fe) into the chitosan (CS) through film casting technique. The effect of MIL-100 (Fe) loadings on chitosan characterized by FT-IR, XRD, contact angle measurement, FESEM-EDS, XPS, zeta potential, and surface roughness analysis. The membrane characterization confirmed the enhanced surface roughness, pore size, surface charge, and hydrophilicity. The CS/MIL-100 (Fe) membrane exhibited an improved pure water flux from 5 to 52 L/m2h as well as 99% rejection efficiency for cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic methyl orange (MO). We obtained the rejection efficiency trend for the MB mixed salts in the order of MgSO4 (Mg2+ - 51.6%, SO42- - 52.5%) > Na2SO4 (Na+ - 26.3%, SO42- - 29.3%) > CaCl2 (Ca2+ - 21.4%, Cl- - 23.8%) > NaCl (Na+ - 16.8%, Cl- - 19.2%). In addition, the CS/MIL-100 (Fe) composite membrane showed excellent rejection efficiency and antifouling performances with high recycling stability. These stunning results evidenced that the CS/MIL-100 (Fe) nanofiltration membrane is a promising candidate for removing toxic pollutants in the textile dyeing wastewater.

Abstract
Membrane fouling during the use of separation membrane has always been the main reason for the degradation of membrane performance. The traditional solution is complicated and inefficient, so we proposed multi-step integration method to prepare antifouling zwitterionic poly(aryl ether sulfone) (PAES-Z-x) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane with higher efficiency. We designed and synthesized a bisphenol precursor containing tertiary amine groups, which could provide reactive sites for grafting zwitterionic group. Afterwards, the zwitterionic modified UF membrane was prepared by graft copolymerization and non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS). The morphology, hydrophilicity, water flux and rejection of the PAES-Z-x membrane could be optimized by tuning zwitterion content. The hydration layer formed by zwitterions effectively reduced the adsorption of proteins and endowed the membrane good antifouling properties. The resulting membrane showed the pure water flux increased (up to 311 L m-2h-1 bar-1), high bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection (97%) and good water flux recovery ratio (FRR) (82.8%). Zwitterionic antifouling PAES UF membrane prepared by a simple and effective method provided a new direction for improving PAES UF membrane's antifouling performance.
