Abstract
High-quality thin-film composite (TFC) membranes with high selectivity and permeability have great significance owing to their practical applications, specifically for the accurate differentiation of monovalent and divalent ions. However, the trade-off effect between selectivity and permeability is still a big challenge due to the difficult structure adjustment of the selective layer. Herein, polydopamine (PDA) functionalized with a hydrophobic long alkane chain was first explored as a functional amphiphilic interlayer to synthesize high-quality TFC membranes via a confined interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction. The amphiphilic interlayer not only restricted the formation of the polyamide (PA) matrix in the pores of the substrate but also accelerated spatially more homogeneous polymerization and formed a PA active layer with a more uniform pore size distribution. The method may provide an effective principle for the construction of versatile polyamide-based membranes with high perm-selectivity on various supports. The NaCl/Na2SO4 separation factor of the D-8/PA membrane reached as high as 204.07, while the flux increased up to 25.71 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. This progress provides a more feasible way for the construction of high-quality TFC membranes with a devisable and creative amphiphilic interlayer for industrial application.

Enhancing the removal of organic micropollutants by nanofiltration membrane with Fe (III)-tannic acid interlayer: Mechanisms and environmental implications. WATER RESEARCH 2023; 245:120623. Abstract
Nanofiltration technology has been applied in a variety of water treatment scenarios. However, conventional thin-film composite (TFC) membranes fail to remove emerging organic micropollutants (OMPs) efficiently. Here we applied thin-film nanocomposite membrane with an interlayer (TFNi) of Fe (III)-tannic acid to remove various types of OMPs, such as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Compared to the pristine TFC membrane, TFNi membrane exhibited crumpled morphology and its rejection layer was denser, better cross-linked and possessed smaller average pore size with narrower distribution. Significant enhancement in water-OMPs selectivity of PhACs and PFASs was observed. The mechanism lies in the effects of interlayer in improving the membrane permeance to water and meanwhile reducing the permeance to some OMPs by enhancing size exclusion effects. This work confirms the effectiveness of using TFNi membrane to simultaneously enhance the OMPs rejection and water permeance. The unraveled mechanism might inspire the future development of high-performance nanofiltration membranes targeting OMPs removal.

Abstract
Existing polyamide (PA) membrane synthesis protocols are underpinned by controlling diffusion-dominant liquid-phase reactions that yield subpar spatial architectures and ionization behavior. We report an ice-confined interfacial polymerization strategy to enable the effective kinetic control of the interfacial reaction and thermodynamic manipulation of the hexagonal polytype (Ih) ice phase containing monomers to rationally synthesize a three-dimensional quasilayered PA membrane for nanofiltration. Experiments and molecular simulations confirmed the underlying membrane formation mechanism. Our ice-confined PA nanofiltration membrane features high-density ionized structure and exceptional transport channels, realizing superior water permeance and excellent ion selectivity.

Abstract
A series of thin film composite (TFC) membranes was prepared with piperazine (PIP) and m-phenylenediamine (MPD) in different ratios, and the magnesium-lithium separation performance of TFC membranes in salt-lake brine with the magnesium-lithium ratio of 28 were systematically compared. The prepared TFC membranes exhibited high rejection of magnesium ions and negative rejection of lithium ions with high water flux, enabling high magnesium-lithium separation efficiency. The characterisation using FTIR spectroscopy, XPS, zeta potential measurements, and SEM techniques indicated that the composition and surface morphology of the membrane prepared with dual aqueous monomers were found to be different from those prepared with single aqueous monomers under the similar conditions. The interfacial polymerization process of different monomers and the structure-performance mechanism of TFC membranes were further discussed.

Abstract
Nanofiltration (NF) membranes have been widely applied in many important environmental applications, including water softening, surface/groundwater purification, wastewater treatment, and water reuse. In recent years, a new class of piperazine (PIP)-based NF membranes featuring a crumpled polyamide layer has received considerable attention because of their great potential for achieving dramatic improvements in membrane separation performance. Since the report of novel crumpled Turing structures that exhibited an order of magnitude enhancement in water permeance ( Science 2018, 360 (6388), 518-521), the number of published research papers on this emerging topic has grown exponentially to approximately 200. In this critical review, we provide a systematic framework to classify the crumpled NF morphologies. The fundamental mechanisms and fabrication methods involved in the formation of these crumpled morphologies are summarized. We then discuss the transport of water and solutes in crumpled NF membranes and how these transport phenomena could simultaneously improve membrane water permeance, selectivity, and antifouling performance. The environmental applications of these emerging NF membranes are highlighted, and future research opportunities/needs are identified. The fundamental insights in this review provide critical guidance on the further development of high-performance NF membranes tailored for a wide range of environmental applications.

Abstract
To enhance the use of nanofiltration in the production of quality drinking water, particularly through the efficient removal of micropollutants yet still preserving essential minerals, the targeted nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) are required to have small pore dimensions coupled with a high, net-negative charge density. Herein, after the formation of a separation layer using piperazine interfacially polymerized with trimesoyl chloride, the exploitation of residual amine groups was systematically investigated by different diacyl chlorides in an organic milieu, which caused the upper part of the final separation layer to be denser and highly negatively charged. Hence, this protocol offers a novel means to fabricate NFMs simultaneously endowed with a low molecular cutoff (MWCO) of 145-238 Da and a reduced rejection of MgCl2 (48%-80%) as well as a competitive water permeance. Those features are ideally applicable to the goal of removing small micropollutants while preserving mineral ions, as needed for the energy-efficient production of safe, quality drinking water. Furthermore, an attempt was made to correlate MWCO with MgCl2 rejection, which provides some insights on the nexus of the electrostatic effects constrained by size exclusion. The significance of residual amine groups and the modification environment was unveiled, and this method paves a new avenue for designing functional NFMs.

Abstract
Oxidative modification is a facile method to improve the desalination performance of thin-film composite membranes. In this study, we comparatively investigated the modification mechanisms induced by sulfate radical (SO4• -) and hydroxyl radical (HO•) for polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. The SO4• -- and HO•-based membrane modifications were manipulated by simply adjusting the pH of the thermal-activated persulfate solution. Although both of them improved the water permeability of the RO membrane under certain conditions, the SO4• --modified membrane notably prevailed over the HO•-modified one due to higher permeability, more consistent salt rejection rates over wide pH and salinity ranges, and better stability when exposed to high doses of chlorine. The differences of the membranes modified by the two radical species probably can be related to their distinct surface properties in terms of morphology, hydrophilicity, surface charge, and chemical composition. Further identification of the transformation products of a model polyamide monomer using high-resolution mass spectrometry demonstrated that SO4• - initiated polymerization reactions and produced hydroquinone/benzoquinone and polyaromatic structures; whereas the amide group of the monomer was degraded by HO•, generating hydroxyl, carboxyl, and nitro groups. The results will enlighten effective ways for practical modification of polyamide RO membranes to improve desalination performances and the development of sustainable oxidation-combined membrane processes.

Abstract
Efficient separation of harmful contaminants (e.g., per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFASs) from valuable components (water and nutrients) is essential to the resource recovery from domestic wastewater for agricultural purposes. Such selective recovery requires precise separation at the angstrom scale. Although nanofiltration (NF) has the potential to achieve solute-solute separation, the state-of-the-art polyamide (PA) membranes are typically constrained by limited precision of solute-solute selectivity and their well-documented permeability-selectivity trade-off. Herein, we present a novel capillary-assisted interfacial polymerization (CAIP) approach to generate metal-organic framework (MOF)-PA nanocomposite membranes with reduced surface charges and more uniform pore sizes that favor solute selectivity by enhanced size exclusion. By uniquely regulating the PA-MOF interactions using the capillary force, CAIP results in effective exposure of MOF nanochannels on the membrane surface and a PA matrix with a high cross-linking gradient in the vertical direction, both of which contribute to an exceptional water permeance of ∼18.7 LMH/bar and an unprecedentedly high selectivity between nutrient ions and PFASs. Our CAIP approach breaks new ground for utilizing nanoparticles with nanochannels in fabricating the next-generation, fit-for-purpose NF membranes for improved solute-solute separations.

Abstract
In this paper, a new nanobiomaterial, alendronate hydroxyapatite (AL-HAP), was synthesized by the conventional co-precipitation method with alendronate (AL) as dopant, and applied in the removal of heavy metal contaminants for the first time. The characterization results showed that the crystallinity of the AL-HAP nanocomposite biomaterials after doping has been greatly deteriorated, and the pore volume and pore size increased. When the doping amount of AL was 10 %, the maximum adsorption capacity of AL-HAP for Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ can reach 1431.8, 469 and 226.6 mg/g, respectively, which was much higher than that reported in other literature. Meanwhile, the adsorption mechanism of AL-HAP for heavy metal ions was discussed from both the views of experimental and Multiwfn program theoretical calculation based on density functional theory (DFT). Quantitative molecular surface analysis was carried out for the first time to study the minimum points and the positions of electrostatic potential (ESP) and average local ionization energy(ALIE), as well as the exact values, giving more accurate and reliable analysis conclusions for the reaction sites and binding mode. In addition, the independent gradient model (IGM) method was also firstly applied to investigate the interactions between AL and HAP or AL-HAP nanocomposite with metal ions. AL-HAP is a potential adsorption material for heavy metal wastewater treatment and soil remediation because of its advantages such as convenient synthesis, excellent adsorption performance and no secondary pollution.

Abstract
The thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membrane is a very important method in solving the water crisis. However, the fabrication and industrialization of high-performance NF membranes still remains challenging. In this work, zwitterionic NF membranes via microwave-assisted grafting of betaine was first proposed. The resulting polyamide layer showed leaflike nanostructures after modification. Because of the enlarged permeation area and enhanced hydrophilicity derived from the unique leaflike structure, the optimal membrane permeability reached 40.8 L m-1 h-1 bar-1. This water permeance was 2.2 times as high as the original polypiperazine-amide membrane, with a Na2SO4 rejection maintained at 97.0%. More importantly, the membrane demonstrated excellent selectivity to monovalent and divalent anions. This zwitterionic membrane fabricated by microwave-assisted grafting of betaine provides new insight for industrial scalable NF membranes with great potentials.
