Abstract
In the past few decades, organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) has attracted numerous researchers and broadly applied in various fields. Unlike conventional nanofiltration, OSN always faced a broad spectrum of solvents including polar solvents and non-polar solvents. Among those recently developed OSN membranes in lab-scale or widely used commercial membranes, researchers preferred to explore intrinsic materials or introduce nanomaterials into membranes to fabricate OSN membranes. However, the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface towards filtration performance was often ignored, which was the key factor in conventional aqueous nanofiltration. The influence of surface hydrophilicity on OSN performance was not studied systematically and thoroughly. Generally speaking, the hydrophilic OSN membranes performed well in the polar solvents while the hydrophobic OSN membranes work well in the non-polar solvent. Many review papers reviewed the basics, problems of the membranes, up-to-date studies, and applications at various levels. In this review, we have focused on the relationship between the surface hydrophilicity of OSN membranes and OSN performances. The history, theory, and mechanism of the OSN process were first recapped, followed by summarizing representative OSN research classified by surface hydrophilicity and types of membrane, which recent OSN research with its contact angles and filtration performance were listed. Finally, from the industrialization perspective, the application progress of hydrophilic and hydrophobic OSN membranes was introduced. We started with history and theory, presented many research and application cases of hydrophilic and hydrophobic OSN membranes, and discussed anticipated progress in the OSN field. Also, we pointed out some future research directions on the hydrophilicity of OSN membranes to deeply develop the effect made by membrane hydrophilicity on OSN performance for future considerations and stepping forward of the OSN industry.

Abstract
Presently, water pollution poses a serious threat to the environment; the removal of organic pollutants from resources, especially dyes, is very important. Nanofiltration (NF) is a promising membrane method to carry out this task. In the present work, advanced supported poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) membranes were developed for NF of anionic dyes using bulk (the introduction of graphene oxide (GO) into the polymer matrix) and surface (the deposition of polyelectrolyte (PEL) layers by layer-by-layer (LbL) technique) modifications. The effect of PEL combinations (polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride/polyacrylic acid (PAA), polyethyleneimine (PEI)/PAA, and polyallylamine hydrochloride/PAA) and the number of PEL bilayers deposited by LbL method on properties of PPO-based membranes were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements. Membranes were evaluated in NF of food dye solutions in ethanol (Sunset yellow (SY), Congo red (CR), and Alphazurine (AZ)). The supported PPO membrane, modified with 0.7 wt.% GO and three PEI/PAA bilayers, exhibited optimal transport characteristics: ethanol, SY, CR, and AZ solutions permeability of 0.58, 0.57, 0.50, and 0.44 kg/(m2h atm), respectively, with a high level of rejection coefficients-58% for SY, 63% for CR, and 58% for AZ. It was shown that the combined use of bulk and surface modifications significantly improved the characteristics of the PPO membrane in NF of dyes.

Abstract
In order to improve the performance of the anion exchange membrane (AEM) used in acid recovery from industrial wastewater, this study adopted a new strategy in which brominated poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenyleneoxide) (BPPO) and polyepichlorohydrin (PECH) were used as the polymer backbone of the prepared membrane. The new anion exchange membrane with a net structure was formed by quaternizing BPPO/PECH with N,N,N,N-tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine (TMHD). The application performance and physicochemical property of the membrane were adjusted by changing the content of PECH. The experimental study found that the prepared anion exchange membrane had good mechanical performance, thermostability, acid resistance and an appropriate water absorption and expansion ratio. The acid dialysis coefficient (UH+) of anion exchange membranes with different contents of PECH and BPPO was 0.0173-0.0262 m/h at 25 °C. The separation factors (S) of the anion exchange membranes were 24.6 to 27.0 at 25 °C. Compared with the commercial BPPO membrane (DF-120B), the prepared membrane had higher values of UH+ and S in this paper. In conclusion, this work indicated that the prepared BPPO/PECH anion exchange membrane had the potential for acid recovery using the DD method.

Abstract
In order to promote the application of membrane technology in the treatment of textile wastewater containing small molecule dye, fabricating a hollow fiber loose nanofiltration (LNF) with a thin and compact separation layer and deepening the understanding of compactness-tailoring mechanism in chemical crosslinking are essential. Firstly, the mechanisms of synergistic crosslinking of PEI-70K and PEI-10K, along with a weakening of the PEI hydration by ethanol, were expounded in primary crosslinking. Then, some LNF separation layers with different compactness were prepared through crosslinking with different crosslinkers to further reduce pore size, which resulted in the efficient removal (~100%) of a small molecular dye (methyl orange (MO), M = 327 g mol-1). The removal of methyl orange is mainly caused by size sieving. The relationship among the pore size, the Mw of the secondary crosslinkers, and the pore size reduction rate was interpreted by comparing the pore size reduction rate of three secondary crosslinkers with different molecular weights. In addition, the as-prepared separation layer exhibited excellent dimensional stability and solvent resistance. This paper not only provides a reference for fabricating hollow fiber LNF with better purification performance, but also shows their potential in developing solvent resistant nanofiltration.

Abstract
Physicochemical properties are essential characteristics of organic compounds, which not only impact the fate of organic pollutants but also determine their application in biological processes. Here, we first found that the dielectric constants (ɛ) of organic pollutants negatively correlated to their strength for enhancing microbial Fe(III) reduction. Those with lower ɛ values than 2.61 potentially promoted the above process following the sequence carbon tetrachloride (CT) > benzene > toluene > tetrachloroethylene (PCE) due to their different ability to deprotonate the phosphorus-related groups on the outer cell membrane of iron-reducing bacteria Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (MR-1). The stronger deprotonation of phosphorus-related groups induced more negative charge of cell surface and more strongly increased cell membrane permeability and consequently stimulated faster release of flavin mononucleotide (FMN) as an electron shuttle/cofactor for Fe(III) reduction. These findings are significant for understanding the biogeochemistry in multi-organic contaminated subsurface and providing knowledge for remediation strategies and current production.
