Abstract
OBJECTIVE Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Dietary interventions can directly affect several ASCVD risk factors. This study aimed to assess an association between dairy consumption and the odds of ASCVD and its risk factors in women with overweight and obesity. METHODS The present cross-sectional study was conducted on 390 Iranian women aged 18-48 years and body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m². Dairy consumption was assessed using a 147-item food frequency questionnaire. Participants were divided into tertiles based on their dairy consumption with 130 (33.3%) women in each category. RESULTS The participants had an average age of 36.73 ± 9.18 years, and the mean BMI was 31.28 ± 4.30 kg/m2. In the unadjusted model, individuals in the third tertile of dairy consumption had 0.79 times lower odds of ASCVD compared to those in the first tertile (OR: 0.21; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.11, 0.41; P-value = 0.001). Additionally, we observed a significant inverse relationship between higher dairy intake and adiposity markers, blood pressure, and Triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI). CONCLUSION The study revealed a negative association between dairy intake and the risk of ASCVD but this association diminished after adjusting for confounding factors. It also found a negative association between dairy consumption with BMI, fat mass index, body fat, blood pressure, and TyG-BMI.

Abstract
Obesity can be a major problem due to its potential to cause a number of health issues, including high blood pressure and diabetes. Many reports have come out of Palestine on overweight and obesity and their direct link to non-communicable diseases, although there is only limited evidence available on the connection between obesity and hypertension in Palestinian adults. We aimed to look at the associations between anthropometric and body composition variables and blood pressure in a large population of Palestinian adults (1337 subjects) and determine which anthropometric indices most strongly correlate with high blood pressure. Anthropometric measurements including height, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), body mass index (BMI), and total body fat (TBF) were assessed. A body composition analyzer was used to measure body weight, fat mass and fat-free mass. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure were measured using a Dinamap vital signs monitor. In both males and females, all the anthropometric measurements showed significant strong positive correlations with mean SBP and mean DBP (p < 0.01). SBP correlated the most strongly with waist circumference in all subjects (r = 0.444 in females, r = 0.422 in males), while DBP correlated the most strongly with WC in males (r = 0.386), but with TBF in females (r = 0.256). By controlling fat percentage, WC, HC, and BMI, which are affected by extra weight and lack of exercise, blood pressure levels can be regulated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Body mass index (BMI), the most common anthropometric index, has recently been challenged by two emerging parameters: a body shape index (ABSI) and body roundness index (BRI). The purpose of this study was to explore the associations of hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD) with conventional and novel anthropometric parameters. METHODS This is a multistage community-based observational and cross-sectional study. A total of 3077 elderly Chinese individuals (mean age 70.92 ± 5.84, 1329 (43%) men) from the communities in the northern area of Shanghai were enrolled from June 2014 to August 2019. Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), ABSI and BRI were calculated with validated formulas. HMOD, including left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), arterial stiffness (AS), lower limb atherosclerosis (LLA), and microalbuminuria (MAU), was assessed using standardized methods. Correlation and multivariable linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to detect the relations between HMOD and anthropometric indices. RESULTS In the total population, compared to those with ABSI, BRI and WHR in the lowest quartiles, participants with values in the highest quartiles exhibited a significantly higher risk of LVH, AS and MAU independent of BMI and other confounders (all P for trend <0.01). In females but not in males, compared to BMI, BRI and WHR had a greater area under the curve (AUC) for detecting HMOD. In the further stepwise logistic regression with all anthropometric indices put into models simultaneously, only BRI remained in the LVH (odds ratio [OR]: 1.42, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.30-1.55) and LLA (OR: 1.48, 95% CI: 1.23-1.77) models, and WHR remained in the AS (OR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.18-1.43) and MAU (OR: 1.48, 95% CI: 1.28-1.72, all P < 0.01) models. CONCLUSION Compared to BMI, the novel anthropometric parameter BRI, together with the conventional parameter WHR, exhibits a closer relationship with HMOD in the elderly population, especially in females.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) are critical modulators of metabolism. In adults, IGFBPs are associated with obesity and insulin resistance. However, the association of IGFBPs with metabolic homeostasis in children and adolescents is not yet fully characterized. In this study we investigated the association of plasma IGFBPs (IGFBP-1, 3 and 7) with weight, central adiposity and cardiovascular disease markers Hs-CRP and Ox-LDL. A total of 420 adolescents (age 11-14 years) were recruited from public middle schools in Kuwait. IGFBPs were measured using bead-based multiplexing while Hs-CRP and Ox-LDL were measured using ELISA. Results showed that levels of IGFBP-1 were significantly lower in obese and overweight children when compared to normal weight children. Correlation analysis showed negative association between the level of IGFBP-1 and waist circumference to height (WC/Ht) ratio. IGFBP-1 level was also negatively associated with Hs-CRP. It was also observed that the levels of IGFBP-3 and IGFBP-7 were negatively correlated with Ox-LDL. Our data demonstrate a strong negative association of IGFBP-1 with overweight/obesity, and the inflammatory marker Hs-CRP. This was not seen with the levels of IGFBP-3 and 7. The association of IGFBP-1 with central adiposity (WC/Ht ratio) was stronger than its association with BMI-for-age z-score. Therefore we suggest that IGFBP-1 could potentially be used as a sensitive biomarker for obesity and its subsequent effects in screening and monitoring of obesity-related metabolic complications in adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Population ageing and air pollution have emerged as two of the most pressing challenges in China. However, little evidence has explored the impact of air pollution on obesity among older adults in China. METHODS The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study-a nationally representative sample of middle-aged and older Chinese was linked to the air pollution data at the city level. Multilevel logistic models were fitted on obesity status among older people in relation to different air quality measures such as chronic exposures to severities of air pollution and pollutants. RESULTS Air pollution was positively associated with increased risks of general obesity and abdominal obesity among older adults (N = 4,364) especially for those with disability. The marginal effects of average air quality index (AQI) on obesity suggest that one standard deviation increase in AQI is associated with increased risks of central obesity by 2.8% (95%CI 1.7% 3.9%) and abdominal obesity by 6.2% (95%CI 4.4% 8.0%). The risk of chronic exposures to light (and moderate), heavy and severe pollution on obesity elevated in a graded fashion in line with the level of pollution. Durations of exposure to PM2.5 and PM10 were significantly associated with increased risk of obesity among older people in China. CONCLUSIONS Chronic exposures to severe air pollution and certain pollutants such as PM2.5 and PM10 raise the risk of obesity among older people in China and the relationships were stronger for those with disability. Future policies that target these factors might provide a promising way of enhancing the physical health of older people.

Abstract
CONTEXT Sex hormones levels determine the risk of occurrence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in post-menopausal (PM) women. AIMS To investigate the relationship between sex hormones (estradiol and testosterone)/sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and cardiovascular risk factors in PM women. In addition, we learned the association between these sex hormones/SHBG and the occurrence of atherosclerotic CAD event in PM women. SETTINGS AND DESIGN Cross-sectional case- control study. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Subjects recruited in the present study were from the cardiology outpatient clinic or Emergency department Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, Assam. The subjects were grouped into two categories after appropriate exclusion criteria: Cases - PM women with documented CAD (n = 40) and controls - Healthy PM women (n = 30). The medical history, clinical examination, and investigations including serum estradiol, total testosterone, SHBG, free testosterone index (FTI), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), lipid profile, carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and postprandial plasma glucose (PPPG) were done and analyzed. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED Pearson correlation between sex hormones and CAD risk factors was done. The association between sex hormones and CAD risk factors among PM women was analyzed by multiple logistic regression. The statistical significance was set at the 0.05 level. RESULTS The mean age of all the subjects was 62.27 ± 6.9 years. Among the cases, a significant positive correlation was found between total testosterone/FTI and waist circumference, W/H ratio, triglyceride levels, hs-CRP, and CIMT (P < 0.01). In addition, a significant negative correlation was found between total testosterone and FTI with high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels (P < 0.01). The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that total testosterone levels (P < 0.01) and SHBG (P < 0.01) are independently associated with the occurrence of atherosclerotic CAD in PM. CONCLUSION We conclude that increased serum testosterone levels and low SHBG in PM women are associated with the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
Obesity is usually considered to predispose to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) but milder degrees of obesity or overweight may be protective in some elderly populations. We examined the relationships between general and abdominal obesity indices with ASCVD and its risk factors in elderly (aged ≥65 years) Shanghai community residents Among the 3950 participants, 21.5% had ASCVD, 56.2% had body mass index (BMI) ≥24 kg/m2, 50.1% had high waist circumference (WC) and 77.1% had waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) ≥0.50. WHtR increased with age in both men and women whereas WC increased with age only in women and BMI decreased with age only in men. The optimal WHtR cut-off value to predict the risk of ASCVD determined by receiver operating characteristic analysis was WHtR ≥0.53 with a prevalence of 55.8%. Having abdominal obesity was significantly associated with prevalent ASCVD with WHtR ≥0.53 having a higher value for the odds ratio than high WC, whereas high BMI was not associated. All three indices predicted high glucose, triglycerides and hsCRP levels but only the WHtR ≥0.53 showed a significant association with physical activity. Abdominal obesity indices, but not BMI, predicted prevalent ASCVD and its risk factors in this elderly Chinese population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), a novel index that has been reported to correlate more strongly than body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) with cardiometabolic risk factors, has not been studied in Chinese individuals with normal body mass index and waist circumference. The present study compared the predictive power of WHtR with those of BMI and WC for such factors in non-obese Chinese, and to define optimal cutoffs of WHtR in this population. METHODS A total of 2137 subjects aged 40-75 years were recruited. Three anthropometric indices (WHtR, BMI, and WC) were compared and the optimal cutoffs of WHtR were identified by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis. WHtR was divided into four quartiles (WHtR-Q), and multiple linear regression analyses were used to calculate the relationship between WHtR-Q and clinical biochemical index. RESULTS Waist-to-height ratio was more efficient than WC to identify cardiometabolic risk factors in both genders, but was only superior to BMI in females. WHtR-Q was positively correlated with fasting plasma glucose, 2-h postprandial blood glucose, and systolic blood pressure, and negatively connected with high density lipoprotein cholesterol in both genders after controlling for age, current smoking and drinking, moderate-intensity physical activity, daily sedentary time, daily screen time and menopause (only for females). The optimal cutoffs of WHtR for detecting cardiometabolic risk factors were 0.47 in males and 0.51 in females. CONCLUSION Waist-to-height ratio might be an effective index to identify cardiometabolic risk factors in Chinese with normal BMI and WC, particularly in females.

Abstract
There have been few comprehensive studies on the age-related changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and bone structure in Chinese people. Using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), we assessed volumetric BMD of both trabecular and cortical bone and their geometry at both radius and tibia in 620 Chinese men and 638 women, aged 20–98 years, in Hong Kong. Cortical BMD did not start declining until after the age of 50 years in women and the age of 60 years in men. In contrast, trabecular BMD declined with age starting from adulthood in both sexes, and the rates of decline accelerated after the age of 50 years only in women. The integral and trabecular bone area expanded with age in older men and women, primarily at the tibia. Cortical bone area decreased significantly in older women, particularly at the tibia, while it decreased only slightly with aging in men. The moment of inertia decreased with age at the radius in older men and women. At the tibia, age-related decline accelerated in older women, but not in older men. It was concluded that trabecularization of bone in response to declining BMD and mechanical loading may be maladaptive by reducing cortical bone area, if periosteal apposition cannot keep pace with it.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Physical activity may modify the association of adiposity with type 2 diabetes. We investigated the independent and joint association of adiposity and physical activity with fasting plasma glucose, impaired fasting glucose, and type 2 diabetes in a Chinese population. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Middle-aged and older Chinese (n=28,946, ≥50 years, 72.4%women) from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study were examined in 2003-2008. Multivariable regression was used in a cross-sectional analysis. RESULTS BMI, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were positively associated with type 2 diabetes after multiple adjustment, most strongly for WHR with odds ratio (OR) of 3.99 (95% CI 3.60-4.42) for highest compared with lowest tertile. Lack of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, but not walking, was associated with diabetes with an OR of 1.29 (1.17-1.41). The association of moderate-to-vigorous activity with fasting glucose varied with WHR tertiles (P=0.01 for interaction). Within the high WHR tertile, participants who had a lack of moderate-to-vigorous activity had an OR of 3.87 (3.22-4.65) for diabetes, whereas those who were active had an OR of 2.94 (2.41-3.59). CONCLUSIONS In this population, WHR was a better measure of adiposity-related diabetes risk than BMI or waist circumference. Higher moderate-to-vigorous activity was associated with lower diabetes risk, especially in abdominally obese individuals.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess cardiovascular risk in men with high body fat percentage (BF%) and normal body mass index (BMI) and men with normal BF% and high BMI. This study was a cross-sectional study using data on 5534 Korean male adults. Body mass index, BF%, and waist circumference were measured as adiposity indices. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used for measuring BF%. Blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured routinely. Information regarding alcohol consumption, smoking, exercise, and past/current medical history was obtained by structured questionnaires. Subjects were categorized into 4 groups by means of BMI and BF% (group 1, BMI <25 kg/m(2) and BF% <25%; group 2, BMI <25 kg/m(2) and BF% > or =25%; group 3, BMI > or =25 kg/m(2) and BF% <25%; group 4, BMI > or =25 kg/m(2) and BF% > or =25%). Cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) such as high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia were estimated in each group. As might be expected, the prevalences of high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia were lowest in group 1 and were highest in group 4. Multivariate analyses showed that subjects in group 2 or group 4 had a 1.8 times increased risk of clustering of 2 or more CVRFs compared with subjects in group 1 (P < .001). The adjusted odds ratio (1.15; 95% confidence interval, 0.94-1.40) of subjects in group 3 on clustering of 2 or CVRFs was not significantly increased (P = .180). High BF% was related to increase of cardiovascular risk regardless of the level of BMI in Korean men. However, cardiovascular risk of men with high BMI without high BF% was not significantly increased.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Some people have a fatty liver despite having low visceral fat and a low body mass index (BMI). We investigated whether fat distribution, especially thigh subcutaneous fat and thigh intramuscular fat, is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS The patients consisted of 408 men and women. NAFLD was defined by an ultrasound scan and excluded other liver diseases. Visceral, subcutaneous abdominal, intramuscular, and subcutaneous thigh adipose tissue was measured by computed tomography. RESULTS The frequency of NAFLD decreased over a quartile of thigh fat independently of BMI in the female patients. Additional adjustments for age and visceral fat area did not change the results. This finding was not observed in the male patients. To investigate the relationship between each fat distribution and NAFLD, we performed a logistic regression analysis. Fat distribution was divided into four groups: visceral fat, abdominal subcutaneous fat, thigh subcutaneous fat, and thigh intramuscular fat. All four fat components were chosen as variables for the regression model. Age, BMI, and the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index were then adjusted successively. A larger subcutaneous fat area was negatively associated with NAFLD after adjustment for visceral fat and abdominal subcutaneous fat areas in women, but not in men. It did not change even after age adjustment, BMI, and the HOMA index. CONCLUSION Low femoral subcutaneous fat amounts were shown to be independently associated with fatty liver disease in women. These results show the importance of accurate measurements of other regional body compositions as well as visceral fat amounts when investigating NAFLD.
