Molybdenum disulfide/reduced graphene oxide: Progress in synthesis and electro-catalytic properties for electrochemical sensing and dye sensitized solar cells

Synergistic integration of Ni-metal organic framework/SnS2nanocomposite and nickel foam electrode for ultrasensitive and selective electrochemical detection of albumin in simulated human blood serum

Albumin is a vital blood protein responsible for transporting metabolites and drugs throughout the body and serves as a potential biomarker for various medical conditions, including inflammatory, cardiovascular, and renal issues. This report details the fabrication of Ni-metal organic framework/SnS2nanocomposite modified nickel foam electrochemical sensor for highly sensitive and selective non enzymatic detection of albumin in simulated human blood serum samples. Ni-metal organic framework/SnS2nanocomposite was synthesized using solvothermal technique by combining Ni-metal-organic framework (MOF) with conductive SnS2leading to the formation of a highly porous material with reduced toxicity and excellent electrical conductivity. Detailed surface morphology and chemical bonding of the Ni-MOF/SnS2nanocomposite was studied using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infra-red, and Raman analysis. The Ni-MOF/SnS2nanocomposite coated on Ni foam electrode demonstrated outstanding electrochemical performance, with a low limit of detection (0.44μM) and high sensitivity (1.3μA/pM/cm2) throughout a broad linear range (100 pM-10 mM). The remarkable sensor performance is achieved through the synthesis of a Ni-MOF/SnS2nanocomposite, enhancing electrocatalytic activity for efficient albumin redox reactions. The enhanced performance can be attributed due to the structural porosity of nickel foam and Ni-metal organic framework, which favours increased surface area for albumin interaction. The presence of SnS2shows stability in acidic and neutral solutions due to high surface to volume ratio which in turn improves sensitivity of the sensing material. The sensor exhibited commendable selectivity, maintaining its performance even when exposed to potential interfering substances like glucose, ascorbic acid, K+, Na+, uric acid, and urea. The sensor effectively demonstrates its accuracy in detecting albumin in real samples, showcasing substantial recovery percentages of 105.1%, 110.28%, and 91.16%.

High photoresponsivity MoS2phototransistor through enhanced hole trapping HfO2gate dielectric

Phototransistor using 2D semiconductor as the channel material has shown promising potential for high sensitivity photo detection. The high photoresponsivity is often attributed to the photogating effect, where photo excited holes are trapped at the gate dielectric interface that provides additional gate electric field to enhance channel charge carrier density. Gate dielectric material and its deposition processing conditions can have great effect on the interface states. Here, we use HfO2gate dielectric with proper thermal annealing to demonstrate a high photoresponsivity MoS2phototransistor. When HfO2is annealed in H2atmosphere, the photoresponsivity is enhanced by an order of magnitude as compared with that of a phototransistor using HfO2without annealing or annealed in Ar atmosphere. The enhancement is attributed to the hole trapping states introduced at HfO2interface through H2annealing process, which greatly enhances photogating effect. The phototransistor exhibits a very large photoresponsivity of 1.1 × 107A W-1and photogain of 3.3 × 107under low light illumination intensity. This study provides a processing technique to fabricate highly sensitive phototransistor for low optical power detection.

Titanium Carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene as Efficient Electron/Hole Transport Material for Perovskite Solar Cells and Electrode Material for Electrochemical Biosensors/Non-Biosensors Applications

Recently, two-dimensional (2D) MXenes materials have received enormous attention because of their excellent physiochemical properties such as high carrier mobility, metallic electrical conductivity, mechanical properties, transparency, and tunable work function. MXenes play a significant role as additives, charge transfer layers, and conductive electrodes for optoelectronic applications. Particularly, titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene demonstrates excellent optoelectronic features, tunable work function, good electron affinity, and high conductivity. The Ti3C2Tx has been widely used as electron transport (ETL) or hole transport layers (HTL) in the development of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Additionally, Ti3C2Tx has excellent electrochemical properties and has been widely explored as sensing material for the development of electrochemical biosensors. In this review article, we have summarized the recent advances in the development of the PSCs using Ti3C2Tx MXene as ETL and HTL. We have also compiled the recent progress in the fabrication of biosensors using Ti3C2Tx-based electrode materials. We believed that the present mini review article would be useful to provide a deep understanding, and comprehensive insight into the research status.

Dynamics of reduced graphene oxide: synthesis and structural models

Technological advancements are leading to an upsurge in demand for functional materials that satisfy several of humankind's needs. In addition to this, the current global drive is to develop materials with high efficacy in intended applications whilst practising green chemistry principles to ensure sustainability. Carbon-based materials, such as reduced graphene oxide (RGO), in particular, can possibly meet this criterion because they can be derived from waste biomass (a renewable material), possibly synthesised at low temperatures without the use of hazardous chemicals, and are biodegradable (owing to their organic nature), among other characteristics. Additionally, RGO as a carbon-based material is gaining momentum in several applications due to its lightweight, nontoxicity, excellent flexibility, tuneable band gap (from reduction), higher electrical conductivity (relative to graphene oxide, GO), low cost (owing to the natural abundance of carbon), and potentially facile and scalable synthesis protocols. Despite these attributes, the possible structures of RGO are still numerous with notable critical variations and the synthesis procedures have been dynamic. Herein, we summarize the highlights from the historical breakthroughs in understanding the structure of RGO (from the perspective of GO) and the recent state-of-the-art synthesis protocols, covering the period from 2020 to 2023. These are key aspects in the realisation of the full potential of RGO materials through the tailoring of physicochemical properties and reproducibility. The reviewed work highlights the merits and prospects of the physicochemical properties of RGO toward achieving sustainable, environmentally friendly, low-cost, and high-performing materials at a large scale for use in functional devices/processes to pave the way for commercialisation. This can drive the sustainability and commercial viability aspects of RGO as a material.

Direct Arylation Synthesis of Small Molecular Acceptors for Organic Solar Cells

In recent years, small molecular acceptors (SMAs) have extensively promoted the progress of organic solar cells (OSCs). The facile tuning of chemical structures affords SMAs excellent tunability of their absorption and energy levels, and it gives SMA-based OSCs slight energy loss, enabling OSCs to achieve high power conversion efficiencies (e.g., >18%). However, SMAs always suffer complicated chemical structures requiring multiple-step synthesis and cumbersome purification, which is unfavorable to the large-scale production of SMAs and OSC devices for industrialization. Direct arylation coupling reaction via aromatic C-H bonds activation allows for the synthesis of SMAs under mild conditions, and it simultaneously reduces synthetic steps, synthetic difficulty, and toxic by-products. This review provides an overview of the progress of SMA synthesis through direct arylation and summarizes the typical reaction conditions to highlight the field's challenges. Significantly, the impacts of direct arylation conditions on reaction activity and reaction yield of the different reactants' structures are discussed and highlighted. This review gives a comprehensive view of preparing SMAs by direct arylation reactions to cause attention to the facile and low-cost synthesis of photovoltaic materials for OSCs.

Mechanochemical Synthesis of Lead-Free Perovskite-Like MA3 Bi2 I9 for Photo-Catalytic Hydrogen Production

In this study, a highly air stable and eco-friendly methyl ammonium bismuth iodide (MA₃ Bi₂ I₉ ) perovskite-like material has been prepared. After physiochemical characterizations, the synthesized MA₃ Bi₂ I₉ was utilized as photo-catalyst towards hydrogen production. It is important to design and synthesize lead (Pb)-free perovskite-like material (MA₃ Bi₂ I₉ ) for photo-catalytic hydrogen-production applications. The synthesized MA₃ Bi₂ I₉ exhibits excellent photo-catalytic hydrogen generation with a production rate of 11.43 μmolg^-1  h^-1 . In the presence of a platinum co-catalyst, the hydrogen production rate further increases to 172.44 μmolg^-1  h^-1 . The MA₃ Bi₂ I₉ photo-catalyst also demonstrates excellent cyclic stability.

Twenty-Two Percent Efficient Pb-Free All-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells Using SCAPS-1D

Herein, we reported the simulation study of lead (Pb)-free all-perovskite tandem solar cells using SCAPS-1D. Tandem solar cells are comprised of two different cells which are known as the top cell and the bottom cell. We simulated tandem solar cells using methyl ammonium germanium iodide (MAGeI₃) as the top subcell absorber layer due to its wide band gap of 1.9 eV. Further, FA_0.75MA_0.25Sn_0.25Ge_0.5I₃ = FAMASnGeI₃ was used as the bottom subcell absorber layer due to its narrow band gap of 1.4 eV. The tandem solar cells were simulated with MAGeI₃ as the top cell and FAMASnGeI₃ as the bottom subcell using SCAPS-1D. Various electro-transport layers (ETLs) i.e., titanium dioxide, tin oxide, zinc oxide, tungsten trioxide, and zinc selenide, were used to examine the impact of ETL on the efficiency of tandem solar cells. The observations revealed that TiO₂ and ZnSe have more suitable band alignment and better charge-extraction/transfer properties. A reasonably improved efficiency of 23.18% and 22.4% have been achieved for TiO₂ and ZnSe layer-based tandem solar cells, respectively.

Fabrication of Sulfur-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode (S@rGO/GCE) Based Acetaminophen Sensor

In the past few years, the design and fabrication of highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensors have received enormous attention from electrochemists. Acetaminophen is an important drug that is used as an antipyretic and analgesic drug throughout the world. It is important to monitor the accurate amount of acetaminophen. Herein, we have prepared sulfur-doped reduced graphene oxide (S@rGO) using simple strategies. The morphological feature of the S@rGO was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy whereas phase purity and formation of S@rGO were authenticated by X-ray diffraction. Further, the glassy carbon electrode was modified using S@rGO as an electrode modifier and employed as an acetaminophen sensor (S@rGO/GCE). This modified sensor (S@rGO/GCE) demonstrates a reasonable detection limit of 0.07 µM and a sensitivity of 0.957 µA/µMcm2.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of MnO2/Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite for 4-Nitrophenol Sensing Applications

Recently, the electrochemical sensing approach has attracted materials/electrochemical scientists to design and develop electrode materials for the construction of electrochemical sensors for the detection of para-nitrophenol (4-NP). In the present study, we have prepared a hybrid composite of MnO2 and rGO (MnO2/rGO) using a hydrothermal approach. The morphological features of the prepared MnO2/rGO composite were studied by scanning electron microscopy, whereas the phase purity and formation of the MnO2/rGO composite were authenticated via the powder X-ray diffraction method. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was also employed to analyze the elemental composition of the prepared MnO2/rGO composite. In further studies, a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with MnO2/rGO composite (MnO2/rGO/GCE) and explored as 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) sensor. The fabricated MnO2/rGO/GCE exhibited a reasonably good limit of detection of 0.09 µM with a sensitivity of 0.657 µA/µMcm2. The MnO2/rGO/GCE also demonstrates good selectivity, stability and repeatability in 50 cycles.

Modulation of inner filter effect between persistent luminescent particles and 2, 3-diaminophenazine for ratiometric fluorescent assay of ascorbic acid and ascorbate oxidase activity

Ascorbate oxidase (AAO) and ascorbic acid (AA) play an important role in delaying lives senescence and metabolism. In this study, a sensitive ratiometric fluorescence sensing system based on the inner filter effect (IFE) between persistent luminescent particles (PLPs) and 2, 3-diaminophenazine (DAP), was designed for the detection of AA and AAO activity. Wherein, PLPs emit blue fluorescence at 475 nm with an excitation wavelength of 370 nm. CoOOH nanosheets with oxidase-like activity can oxidize o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to produce 2, 3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with orange fluorescence at 558 nm. The generated DAP quenched the fluorescence of PLPs by an inner filter effect (IFE). When AA was introduced to the system, CoOOH nanosheets were destroyed and reduced to Co²⁺, thereby inhibiting the oxidization of OPD and effectively preserving the blue fluorescence of PLPs at 475 nm. Besides, AAO can catalyse AA to produce the oxided dehydroascorbic acid (DHA). The dissipative AA can recover orange fluorescence of DAP with weakening the blue fluorescence of PLPs. Therefore, a sensitive ratio fluorescence sensing strategy was established by using PLPs as the reference signal and DAP as a reported signal for the detection of AA and AAO activity. Under optimal conditions, the obtained linear ranges were 1-45 μM and 1-20 mU/mL, and detection limits were 0.2 μM and 0.25 mU/mL, respectively. Finally, this proposed ratiometric fluorescent analytical strategy was used to detect AA in real samples (lemon, orange, tomato), which exhibited satisfactory results comparing with commercial kit.

Fabrication of CeO2/GCE for Electrochemical Sensing of Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is a widely used derivative of phenol which has a negative influence on human beings and the environment. The determination of the accurate amount of hydroquinone is of great importance. Recently, the fabrication of an electrochemical sensing device has received enormous attention. In this study, we reported on the facile synthesis of cerium dioxide (CeO₂) nanoparticles (NPs). The CeO₂ NPs were synthesized using cerium nitrate hexahydrate as a precursor. For determining the physicochemical properties of synthesized CeO₂ NPs, various advanced techniques, viz., powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were studied. Further, these synthesized CeO₂ NPs were used for the modification of a glassy carbon electrode (CeO₂/GCE), which was utilized for the sensing of hydroquinone (HQ). A decent detection limit of 0.9 µM with a sensitivity of 0.41 µA/µM cm² was exhibited by the modified electrode (CeO₂/GCE). The CeO₂/GCE also exhibited good stability, selectivity, and repeatability towards the determination of HQ.
