Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil, tree leaves, and water samples by magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction based on β-cyclodextrin functionalized graphene oxide followed by GC-FID

Fast and efficient extraction and determination of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs using poly(8-hydroxyquinoline)-coated magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite prior to capillary electrophoresis analysis in wastewater, breast milk, and urine samples

In this study, magnetic graphene oxide coated with poly(8-hydroxyquinoline) was successfully synthesized, characterized, and utilized as a novel sorbent for the ultrasonic-assisted dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction of naproxen and ibuprofen. These analytes served as representative analytes for two nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in various real samples. Characterization techniques, such as IR, X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray-mapping, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), were used to confirm the correctness synthesis and preparation of the nanocomposites. Effective parameters on the extraction efficiency were investigated to maximize the analytical performance of the developed method. The dynamic range (1-1000 µg L-1), coefficients of determination (R2 ≥ 0.997), the limits of detection (0.3-1.0 µg L-1), and limit of quantification (1.0-3.0 µg L-1), intra-day and inter-day precisions (3.5%-7.2%) were achieved. The method validation results showed extraction recovery ranging from 80.4% to 96.0% and preconcentration factors ranging from 137 to 140.

Facile extraction and determination of organophosphorus pesticides using poly (8-hydroxyquinoline) functionalized magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes nanocomposite in water, fruits, and vegetables samples

This study presents a dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) approach for extracting and determining of two organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), including diazinon and chlorpyrifos as model analytes in various samples. For this purpose, we synthesized, characterized, and utilized magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes coated with poly 8-hydroxyquinoline (MWCNTs/Fe3O4@PHQ) as a novel sorbent. The impact of various parameters, including sorbent type, sample pH, sample volume, sorbent amount, desorption solvent (type and volume), extraction time, and ionic strength on the extraction efficiency was investigated and optimized. Following the extraction, the desorbed pesticides in acetone were analyzed using gas chromatography with an FID detector. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the proposed method showed excellent linearity in the range of 3-1000 µg/L, low detection limit (0.9-1.5 µg/L), good relative recoveries (86-101.5 %), and high precision (RSD < 6.5 %). Finally, the applicability of this method was evaluated by analyzing the target OPPs in a variety of real samples, and obtained satisfactory results.

A magnetic solid phase extraction microfluidic chip coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in aqueous samples

In this paper, we designed and manufactured a reliable magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) microfluidic chip for determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Sample loading, washing and elution are implemented with microinjection pump and integrated on a single chip, which reduced manual operation. Magnets were used to fix octadecyl/phenyl bifunctional Fe3O4@SiO2 extractant to avoid the design of weir structure in extraction chamber. The whole microfluidic chip was simple and low cost. Based on the microfluidic chip extraction platform, the on-chip MSPE method for the determination of PAHs was optimized and established. The results showed that this method required only 2 mL of sample, 2 mg of extractant, and 50 μL of elution organic solvent for whole on-chip MSPE process, which was environmentally friendly and consistent with green chemistry. Method verification results were displayed which the linear range of five PAHs was between 1-100 ng/mL with good linearity (R2≥ 0.9985), and the detection limits (S/N = 3) were 0.08-0.26 ng/mL. The RSDs of intra-day precision (n=6) and inter-day precision (n=9) for PAHs were less than 6.1 % and 7.2 %, respectively. Enrichment factors were determined to be 31.3-37.7. The recoveries of river water, tap water, bottle water, waste water and urine at three spiked levels were in the range of 89.9% to 113.7% and the matrix effect values were between 83.8% to 109.6%. The extraction platform has the advantages of accurate analysis, simple design and cost-effective, which is conducive to the widespread use of microfluidic chips.

A novel multiwalled carbon nanotube-cyclodextrin nanocomposite for solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in snow samples

Novel solid-phase microextraction coatings based on the use of multiwalled carbon nanotube-cyclodextrin (MWCNT-CD) nanocomposites were developed for the determination of 16-priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at ultratrace levels in snow samples. The performance of both β- and γ-CD was tested to increase the detection capabilities towards the heaviest and most lipophilic compounds, i.e., five- and six-ring PAHs. To facilitate the interactions of MWCNTs with CDs, an oxidation procedure using both HNO₃ and H₂O₂ was applied, obtaining superior results using MWCNTs-H₂O₂-γ-CD fiber. Detection and quantitation limits below 0.7 and 2.3 ng/L, RSD lower than 21%, and recoveries of 88(± 2)-119.8(± 0.4)% proved the reliability of the developed method for the determination of PAHs at ultratrace levels. The complexation capability of the γ-CD was also demonstrated in solution by NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy studies and at solid state by XRD analysis. Finally, snow samples collected in the ski area of Dolomiti di Brenta were analyzed, showing a different distribution of the 16 priority PAHs, being naphthalene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and pyrene the only compounds detected in all the analyzed samples.

Preparation of an efficient magnetic nano-sorbent based on modified cellulose and carboxylated carbon nano-tubes for extraction of pesticides from food and agricultural water samples before GC-FID analysis

This paper reports the direct synthesis approach of carboxamide functionalized magnetic nano-composite named Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-NH₂@dialdehyde cellulose (DAC)@CNT-COOH as an effectual sorbent for the co-extraction of seven agricultural insecticides and herbicides from vegetable, fruit, and water samples using the magnetic dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction procedure. Under the optimized extraction conditions (sorbent amount: 18.1 mg; desorption time: 6.5 min; desorption solvent volume: 185 μL; desorption solvent: acetonitrile; extraction time: 9.5 min; pH of sample solution: 7.0, and salt content: 5.0 % w/v sodium chloride), good linearity within the range 0.5-1200 ng/mL (R² ≥ 0.998) was achieved. Extraction efficiencies were in the range 63.4-84.1 %, the limits of detection were 0.08-1.0 ng/mL, and acceptable relative recoveries (87.6-103.8 %), and precisions were also achieved (RSDs < 6.8 %, n = 3). Ultimately, the obtained results showed that the developed method could be applied to determine trace amounts of desired analytes in various agricultural water and food samples.

Adsorption of naphthalene polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon from wastewater by a green magnetic composite based on chitosan and graphene oxide

A green magnetic composite mCS/GO was synthesized using water hyacinth extract, as a reducing agent, and proanthocyanidin, as a crosslinking agent, for the adsorption of naphthalene from effluents. The green composite was evaluated using different characterization techniques to determine its thermal (TG/DTG), structural (BET, XPS and FTIR), crystallographic (XRD), and textural (SEM) properties in natura and post-adsorption. The results obtained through a central composite design (CCD) experiment indicated that the initial concentration of NAP and the adsorbent dosage are significant for the adsorption capacity. The adsorption assays indicated that physisorption, through π-π and hydrophobic interactions, were the main mechanism involved in the NAP adsorption. However, the adjustment to the PSO and Freundlich models, obtained through kinetic and equilibrium studies, indicated that chemisorption also influences the adsorptive process. The thermodynamic study indicated physisorption as the mechanism responsible for the NAP adsorption. Also, the adsorbent has high affinity for the adsorbate and the process is spontaneous and endothermic. The maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) of the green mCS/GO was 334.37 mg g^-1 at 20 °C. Furthermore, the green mCS/GO was effectively regenerated with methanol and reused for five consecutive cycles, the percentage of NAP recovery went from approximately 91 to 75% after the fifth cycle. The green composite was also applied in the adsorption of NAP from river water samples, aiming to evaluate the feasibility of the method in real applications. The adsorption efficiency was approximately 70%. From what we know, this it is the first time that a green adsorbent was recycled after the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) adsorption process.

Analytical perspective and environmental remediation potentials of magnetic composite nanosorbents

The synthesis and application of magnetic nanosorbents to remove emerging pollutants have been considered the best environmental remediation and sustainability option. Incorporating magnetism shortens the treatment time and allows the sorbent to be recovered quickly using external magnetic with many cycles. The implementation of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) using magnetic materials of different shapes, sizes, and surface morphology can be a valuable tool in applying materials to prepare analytical samples. In MSPE applications, materials with strong magnetic domain can be used as precursors for constructing magnetic composite as a promising sorbent. This article focuses on the most recent and exceptional applications of magnetic adsorbents for preconcentration and removal purposes. Magnetic adsorbents, such as nanoparticles (NPs), foam, sponges, nanocomposites, hydrogels, and beads with multifunctional attributes have been comprehensively studied in terms of preparation procedures, limitations, advantages, and interactions between pollutants and magnetic composites. The role of magnetic sorbents in sample preparation methods, such as simple solid-phase extraction and microextraction, as well as sorptive extraction using a stir bar, was also examined. The use of magnetic adsorbents with analytical techniques, such as solid-phase extraction and solid-phase microextraction improves the method for preparing samples concerning the influential role of magnetic adsorbents. Towards the end, promising features and future outlook are also directed.

Relationship between graphene and pedosphere: A scientometric analysis

The mass production and application of graphene have gradually expanded from academic research to industrial applications, which will inevitably lead to graphene entering the soil actively and passively. Therefore, the relationship between graphene and the pedosphere has attracted a lot of attention in the last decade. The most important question is whether graphene will harm soil health. Fortunately, the evidence is that graphene can alter soil physicochemical properties and microbial communities to some extent, but not dramatically. On this basis, the role of graphene in soil has been investigated in all directions. This review summarizes the literature on the relationship between graphene and soils. Topics include remediation and sensing of soil using graphene materials, the effects of graphene on soil, and the effects of graphene in soil on plant growth. At the same time, this review also uses bibliometrics to review the history of the topic. The number of papers published each year, participating countries, participating institutions and important articles were analyzed in detail. Finally, based on the published literature, we described the future perspectives of graphene and the pedosphere.
