Fabrication of Fe3O4/MgAl-layered double hydroxide magnetic composites for the effective decontamination of Co(II) from synthetic wastewater

Magnetic layered double hydroxide-based composites as sustainable adsorbent materials for water treatment applications: Progress, challenges, and outlook

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have shown exciting applications in water treatment because of their unique physicochemical properties, which include high surface areas, tunable chemical composition, large interlayer spaces, exchangeable content in interlayer galleries, and ease of modification with other materials. Interestingly, their surface, as well as the intercalated materials within the layers, play a role in the adsorption of the contaminants. The surface area of LDH materials can be further enhanced by calcination. The calcined LDHs can reattain their structural features upon hydration through the "memory effect" and may uptake anionic species within their interlayer galleries. Besides, LDH layers are positively charged within the aqueous media and can interact with specific contaminants through electrostatic interactions. LDHs can be synthesized using various methods, allowing the incorporation of other materials within the layers or forming composites that can selectively capture target pollutants. They have been combined with magnetic nanoparticles to improve their separation after adsorption and enhance adsorptive features in many cases. LDHs are relatively greener materials because they are mostly composed of inorganic salts. Magnetic LDH-based composites have been widely employed for the purification of water contaminated with heavy metals, dyes, anions, organics, pharmaceuticals, and oil. Such materials have shown interesting applications for removing contaminants from real matrices. Moreover, they can be easily regenerated and used for several adsorption-desorption cycles. Magnetic LDHs can be regarded as greener and sustainable because of several green aspects in their synthesis and reusability. We have critically reviewed their synthesis, applications, factors affecting their adsorption performance, and related mechanisms in this review. In the end, some challenges and perspectives are also discussed.

Recovery of Palladium and Gold from PGM Ore and Concentrates Using ZnAl-Layered Double Hydroxide@zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 Nanocomposite

Gold (Au) and palladium (Pd) are platinum group metals (PGMs) that are considered critical in society because they are required in several industrial applications. Their shortage has caused the urgent need for their recovery from secondary resources. Therefore, there is a need to develop functional materials with high adsorption capacity and selectivity for recovery of PGMs from various secondary sources. In this study, a Zn-Al-layered double hydroxide@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Zn–Al–LDH@ZIF–8) nanocomposite was used as an adsorbent for the recovery of Au and Pd from ore concentrates. The Zn–Al–LDH@ZIF–8 nanocomposite was characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, zeta potential, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy. The recovery of Au(III) and Pd(II) was achieved using ultrasound-assisted dispersive µ-solid-phase extraction (UA-D-µ-SPE) and their quantification was attained using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The results showed that the surface of the adsorbent remained positively charged in a wide pH range, which endowed the nanocomposite with high adsorption affinity towards Au(III) and Pd(II). Under optimised conditions, the equilibrium studies revealed that the adsorption of Au(III) and Pd(II) ions followed the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum sorption capacities of 163 mg g−1 and 177 mg g−1 for Au(III) and Pd(II), respectively. The nanocomposite possessed relatively good regeneration, reusability, and stability characteristics, with its performance decreasing by only 10% after five adsorption–desorption cycles.

Magnetic Adsorbents for Wastewater Treatment: Advancements in Their Synthesis Methods

The remediation of water streams, polluted by various substances, is important for realizing a sustainable future. Magnetic adsorbents are promising materials for wastewater treatment. Although numerous techniques have been developed for the preparation of magnetic adsorbents, with effective adsorption performance, reviews that focus on the synthesis methods of magnetic adsorbents for wastewater treatment and their material structures have not been reported. In this review, advancements in the synthesis methods of magnetic adsorbents for the removal of substances from water streams has been comprehensively summarized and discussed. Generally, the synthesis methods are categorized into five groups, as follows: direct use of magnetic particles as adsorbents, attachment of pre-prepared adsorbents and pre-prepared magnetic particles, synthesis of magnetic particles on pre-prepared adsorbents, synthesis of adsorbents on preprepared magnetic particles, and co-synthesis of adsorbents and magnetic particles. The main improvements in the advanced methods involved making the conventional synthesis a less energy intensive, more efficient, and simpler process, while maintaining or increasing the adsorption performance. The key challenges, such as the enhancement of the adsorption performance of materials and the design of sophisticated material structures, are discussed as well.

Effectively removing indole-3-butyric acid from aqueous solution with magnetic layered double hydroxide-based adsorbents

The magnetic layered double hydroxide-based materials (MLDHs) with the metal composition of Mg(II)Al(III) were synthesized by different conditions as the adsorbent for removal of a phytohormone, indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). The morphological characteristics of MLDHs were studied through various characterization methods such as XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, BET, Zeta-potential and VSM. The adsorption results showed that the adsorption capacity of MLDH-1 synthesized by co-precipitation method with ammonia as the base source was the best (maximum 522.6 mg/g). The extent of adsorption in the pH range of 3.0-9.0 was observed to be no noticeable change. From the economical point of view, 1.0 g/L MLDH-1 composites were selected as optimum parameter. For a given adsorbent concentration (C_s), its kinetics and adsorption isotherm followed the pseudo-second-order and Liu isotherm model, respectively. The adsorbed sample can be easily magnetically separated and regenerated with NaNO₃. The adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic, including two path stages: surface adsorption of lamellar and interlayer anion exchange. The research makes a contribution to evaluating the ability of MLDHs in IBA removal and helping the public to understand the mechanism of adsorption process.

Pretreatment by recyclable Fe3O4@Mg/Al-CO3-LDH magnetic nano-adsorbent to dephosphorize for the determination of trace F- and Cl- in phosphorus-rich solutions

The magnetic nano-adsorbent Fe₃O₄@Mg/Al-CO₃-LDH (Mg/Al-type layered double hydroxide) with a CO₃²⁻ interlayer anion has been synthesized successfully on Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles via a urea hydrothermal method. It is confirmed that the nano-adsorbent can adsorb PO₄³⁻ rapidly and efficiently in multi-ion solutions; meanwhile, it did not adsorb any F⁻ and Cl⁻, even with a high amount of the nano-adsorbent or a longer adsorption time. This behaviour is beneficial for applications to remove PO₄³⁻ in phosphorus-rich solutions, and especially can be utilized to determine trace F⁻ and Cl⁻ anions in phosphorus-rich solutions by physical and chemical analysis methods including ion chromatography without serious interference from PO₄³⁻ for trace determinations. Herein, the hydrothermally synthesized Fe₃O₄@Mg/Al-CO₃-LDH was characterized via SEM, TEM, SAED, XRD, FTIR, magnetic hysteresis loop analysis and adsorption–desorption isotherm analysis. The structure and stability, adsorption mechanism, magnetic saturation value, specific surface area, total pore volume, phosphate adsorption capacity and recyclability are discussed. Using the optimized pretreatment conditions, Fe₃O₄@Mg/Al-CO₃-LDH was utilized successfully to adsorb PO₄³⁻ in real samples and determine trace F⁻ and Cl⁻ accurately by ion chromatography; this would be very beneficial for continuous analysis and on-line tests by physical and chemical analysis methods without interference from PO₄³⁻ in phosphorus-rich samples, leaving F⁻ and Cl⁻ even if in a trace content.

Synthesized recyclable Fe₃O₄@Mg/Al-CO₃-LDH magnetic nano-adsorbent is utilized to dephosphorize phosphorous-rich solutions but leave F⁻ and Cl⁻ to be detected chromatographically.

Fabrication of Fe3O4/MgAl-layered double hydroxide magnetic composites for the effective removal of Orange II from wastewater

A facile approach has been developed to construct a composite of magnetic Fe₃O₄ (MNPs) and regular hexagon Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (MNPs/MgAl-LDH) via a two-step hydrothermal method combined with the urea hydrolysis reaction for the removal of Orange II. The scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed MNPs and MgAl-LDH have been combined successfully, providing the combination of the superior properties of fast separation and high adsorption capacity. The pH values, contact time, initial dye concentration and temperature were investigated in detail. The kinetics and isotherm study showed the adsorption of Orange II on MNPs/MgAl-LDH obeyed the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model respectively and the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic in nature. Also, some coexisting anions such as Cl^-, NO₃ ^-, CO₃ ^- and SO₄ ^2- had no significant effect on the removal of Orange II. The mechanism study revealed that the adsorption of Orange II on MNPs/MgAl-LDH mainly involves surface adsorption through electrostatic force and the layer anion exchange. Moreover, Orange II could be desorbed from MNPs/MgAl-LDH using 100 mg L^-1 NaOH and used for four cycles without any adsorption performance loss, demonstrating MNPs/MgAl-LDH prepared in this work could be used as a cost-effective and efficient material for the removal of Orange II.
