Abstract
The global corrosion cost is estimated to be around 2.5 trillion USD, which is more than 3 % of the global GDP. Against this background, large efforts have been made to find effective corrosion inhibitors. Ionic liquids (ILs) are nowadays regarded as reliable functional materials and one of the most promising classes of anticorrosion agents. Not only are they efficient in preventing corrosion of iron and other metals, but they are also relatively inexpensive, need no solvents, and are non-toxic to humans This review addresses both experimental and theoretical investigations conducted to IL-based corrosion inhibitors (CIs). It covers various ILs used, synthesis methods, and their performance in diverse corrosive environments. Electrochemical techniques like EIS and potentiodynamic polarization, along with computational approaches including quantum chemical calculations and DFT, provide valuable insights into corrosion inhibition mechanisms and the interactions between anticorrosion agents-surfaces. The synergistic combination of experimental and theoretical approaches enhances our understanding of corrosion inhibition, enabling the design and optimization of effective and sustainable corrosion protection strategies. This review consolidates the existing knowledge on ionic liquid-based corrosion inhibitors, highlights the key findings from both experimental and theoretical investigations, and points out possible directions for further studies in this area.

Abstract
Metal corrosion has recently emerged as a growing concern, impacting both local and industrial operations and disrupting conventional production methods. The utilization of green inhibitors to mitigate the metal degradation has garnered extensive attention from researchers and industrial professionals due to their prominent advantages: high efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendliness. A novel ecofriendly inhibitor was prepared from Praecitrullus fistulosus (tinda fruit and peel) for mild steel (MS) corrosion in 1 M HCl. The presence of phenol, 3,5-bis (1,1-dimethyl ethyl)-, 9-octadecenoic acid, methyl ester, hexadecanoic acid 15-methyl-, methyl ester, 9, 12-octadecadienoic acid, methyl ester, 9, 12, 15-octadecatrienoic acid, methyl ester, (Z,Z,Z-), ascorbic acid, and phytol were identified as major constituent through LC/MS analysis of tinda extracts. The existence of these compounds was further confirmed through FTIR analysis, which shows the presence of various functional groups, such as -OH, CO, C-O-C, CC, and aromatic rings in the tinda extracts. Electrochemical and gravimetric analyses were used to investigate the inhibitory effect of tinda extracts. Outcomes of Tafel analysis revealed that both tinda extracts significantly reduced the corrosion current as compared to blank and achieved 83.73 % and 87.59 % inhibition efficiencies at 200 mg L-1 of tinda peel extract (TPE) and tinda fruit extract (TFE), respectively. The change in corrosion potential (Ecorr) was within an ±85 mV range compared to that of the uninhibited system, indicating that both tinda extracts demonstrated a mixed-type inhibition behavior. During adsorption studies, the best fit was obtained for the Langmuir adsorption model. The obtained values of standard Gibbs free energy (ΔG°ads) for TPE and TFE lie between -20 and - 40 kJ mol-1 but close to -20 kJ mol-1, which reveals preferential physical adsorption of the extracts on the metal surface. Thermodynamic parameters, including activation energy, enthalpy, and entropy, were computed across the temperature range of 303 to 323 K, suggesting that corrosion occurs spontaneously by the endothermic process. FESEM analysis depicted that inhibited systems exhibited smooth and crack-free surfaces as compared to blank system. AFM images demonstrated that surface roughness was significantly reduced for the inhibited system. In EDX analysis, the weight percentage of Cl was reduced in the presence of tinda extracts as compared to blank, and in XRD analysis, iron chloride (FeCl2) peak did not appear in the presence of inhibitor but it was in the uninhibited system. All surface-related findings signify that tinda extracts are adsorbed on the MS surface and form a protective layer that separates the metal from the corrosive solution.

Abstract
The broad application of ionic liquids (ILs) has been hindered by uncertainties surrounding their ecotoxicity. In this work, a Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) model was devised to predict the inhibition of ILs towards the activity of AChE, employing both Random Forest (RF) and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine learning approaches. Fourteen kings of essential molecular feature descriptors were screened from an initial roster of 244 descriptors through the application of a feature importance index and they showed a significant impact on the activity of AChE activity. The two models based solely on the 14 most critical molecular descriptors could maintain model's robustness and reliability. The correlation analysis between these 14 descriptors and the inhibition of AChE activity revealed the potential impact of the molecular characteristics on ILs toxicity. The results underscored the main influence of cations in ILs on the inhibitory activity towards the AChE enzyme. Specifically, cations exhibiting hydrophobicity properties were found to exert more potent inhibitory effects on the AChE enzyme. In addition, some other properties of the cations, such as the degree of branching, atomic weight and partial charge also modulated their inhibition potential. This study enhances the comprehension of the structure-activity relationship between ILs and AChE inhibition, providing a reference for designing safer and greener ILs.

Assessment of Hydrazone Derivatives for Enhanced Steel Corrosion Resistance in 15 wt.% HCl Environments: A Dual Experimental and Theoretical Perspective. Molecules 2024; 29:985. Abstract
This study evaluates the corrosion inhibition capabilities of two novel hydrazone derivatives, (E)-2-(5-methoxy-2-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl)-N'-(4-methylbenzylidene)acetohydrazide (MeHDZ) and (E)-N'-benzylidene-2-(5-methoxy-2-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl)acetohydrazide (HHDZ), on carbon steel in a 15 wt.% HCl solution. A comprehensive suite of analytical techniques, including gravimetric analysis, potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), demonstrates their significant inhibition efficiency. At an optimal concentration of 5 × 10-3 mol/L, MeHDZ and HHDZ achieve remarkable inhibition efficiencies of 98% and 94%, respectively. EIS measurements reveal a dramatic reduction in effective double-layer capacitance (from 236.2 to 52.8 and 75.3 µF/cm2), strongly suggesting inhibitor adsorption on the steel surface. This effect is further corroborated by an increase in polarization resistance and a significant decrease in corrosion current density at optimal concentrations. Moreover, these inhibitors demonstrate sustained corrosion mitigation over extended exposure durations and maintain effectiveness even under elevated temperatures, highlighting their potential for diverse operational conditions. The adsorption process of these inhibitors aligns well with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, implying physicochemical interactions at the carbon steel surface. Density functional tight-binding (DFTB) calculations and molecular dynamics simulations provide insights into the inhibitor-surface interaction mechanism, further elucidating the potential of these hydrazone derivatives as highly effective corrosion inhibitors in acidic environments.

Abstract
Classical electrochemical and microscopy methods were used to characterize the interfacial processes of the adsorption of chloride ions from ionic liquids at the Bi(111) single crystal electrode. The mixture of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride was electrochemically characterized by using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. In situ scanning tunneling microscopy images showed the formation of superstructures at the electrode's surface over an extended period of time. The specific adsorption of chloride ions reaches an equilibrium state in a more viscous ionic liquid medium slower than in aqueous and organic solvents. Capacitance values increase considerably (also depending on alternative current frequency) at the potential region, where the specific adsorption of chloride ions with partial charge transfer occurs.

Abstract
Polysaccharide chitosan and L-histidine were applied to synthesize chitosan-based carbon dots (CA-CDs) by a simple laser ablation method. After characterization of the CA-CDs by FT-IR, UV-vis, Raman, XRD, TEM, and XPS, the CA-CDs were introduced as an eco-friendly and high-performance corrosion inhibitor for mild steel (MS) in 1.0 M HCl solution. The inhibition action and mechanism of CA-CDs were determined by weight loss and electrochemical measurements, in combination with SEM, AFM, and XPS. The results show that CA-CDs as mixed-type inhibitors could effectively weaken the corrosion of MS in 1.0 M HCl solution, and their maximum inhibition efficiency reaches 97.4 % at 40 mg L-1. The adsorption behavior of CA-CDs well obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm containing both chemisorption and physisorption. The chemisorption mainly results from the multiple adsorption sites in the CA-CDs, and the physical adsorption is due to the blocking and barrier effect of CA-CD nanoparticles. Both adsorption behaviors were proposed to elucidate the corrosion inhibition mechanism of CA-CDs.

Abstract
To optimize the economic advantages and corrosion-resisting property of A572 Gr.65 steels, the inhibition effect of water-soluble imidazoline on the sample surface with rare earth was explored in a 3.5 wt % NaCl solution. In this paper, the mechanism of corrosion and the adsorptive behavior of water-soluble imidazoline inhibitors on A572 Gr.65 steels with 47 ppm of rare earth in saltwater solution were discussed, along with the establishment of the adsorption model. Achievements proposed that the inhibition efficiency of water-soluble imidazoline was as high as 95.73% at 80 mg L-1 dosage following an anodic-dominated mixed-type inhibition mechanism. Besides, the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the corrosion inhibitor resulted in a smoother and more stable rust layer with a significant reduction of the γ-FeOOH. Theoretical calculations confirmed that imidazoline formed a unimolecular layer adsorption film on the steel surface, exhibiting adherence to both Langmuir and Frumkin adsorption isotherms, involving physical and chemical adsorption.

Abstract
Two newly synthetic nontoxic dipyridine-based ionic liquids (PILs) with the same chain lengths and different polar groups were investigated: bispyridine-1-ium tetrafluoroborate (BPHP, TFPHP) with terminal polar groups Br and CF3, respectively, on Carbon steel (CS) in 8M H3PO4 as corrosion inhibitors. Their chemical structure was verified by performing 1HNMR and 13CNMR. Their corrosion inhibition was investigated by electrochemical tests, especially as mass transfer with several characterizations: Scanning electron microscope/Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), UV-visible, Atomic force microscope, Atomic absorbance spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Gloss value. Theoretical calculation using density functional theory by calculating several parameters, molecular electrostatic potential, Fukui Indices, and Local Dual Descriptors were performed to demonstrate the reactivity behavior and the reactive sites of two molecules with a concentration range (1.25-37.5 × 10-5 M) and temperature (293-318 K). The maximum inhibition efficiency (76.19%) and uniform coverage were sufficient for BPHP at an optimum concentration of 37.5 × 10-5 M with the lowest temperature of 293 K. TFPHP recorded 71.43% at the same conditions. Two PILs were adsorbed following the El-Awady adsorption isotherm, including physicochemical adsorption. The computational findings agree with Electrochemical measurements and thus confirm CS's corrosion protection in an aggressive environment.

Abstract
The acid solution is widely used in chemical cleaning, oil well acidifying, and other fields, which also brings the problem of metal corrosion that cannot be underestimated. However, adding an inhibitor is one of the most convenient and effective ways to slow down metal corrosion. N-heterocyclic compounds with high stability and durability, in line with the strategy of sustainable development, have been widely studied in an acidic environment. Imidazole, pyridine, and quinoline compounds, as the most commonly used corrosion inhibitors, can form a compact protective film via π electron cloud shifting towards the N atoms to generate coordination function. In particular, flexible modifiability makes N-heterocyclic compounds adapt to different corrosion environments readily, conducive to the formation of chemical bonds between compounds with metal surfaces to be better adsorption, so as to avoid the blemish of traditional inhibitors (such as inorganic salt and organic amines inhibitors) due to excessive usage, surface roughness of metal or environmental factor (for instance, temperature, pH and metallic) causing loose bonding between film and metal surface. More importantly, the efficient corrosion inhibition and toxicity of N-heterocyclic compounds have close to do with their own functional groups. Combined with the latest research achievement, the effects of different substituents on the corrosion inhibition and corrosion inhibition mechanisms were systematically reviewed in the acid-corrosive solution of imidazole, pyridine, and quinoline and their derivatives in this review article, respectively. In addition, the application and function of density functional theory in predicting the corrosion inhibition effect of corrosion inhibitors are also discussed. The future development trend was prospected according to the summarized research results.

Abstract
Environmental protection and sustainability is the development goal that countries all over the world are pursuing. Ionic liquids (ILs), as a new type of green material, have a great application prospect. And the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) is significant for the research of ILs. Abstract
Waste electrical and electronic equipment or e-waste has recently emerged as a significant global concern. This waste contains various valuable metals, and via recycling, it could become a sustainable resource of metals (viz. copper, silver, gold, and others) while reducing reliance on virgin mining. Copper and silver with their superior electrical and thermal conductivity have been reviewed due to their high demand. Recovering these metals will be beneficial to attain the current needs. Liquid membrane technology has appeared as a viable option for treating e-waste from various industries as a simultaneous extraction and stripping process. It also includes extensive research on biotechnology, chemical and pharmaceutical, environmental engineering, pulp and paper, textile, food processing, and wastewater treatment. The success of this process depends more on the selection of organic and stripping phases. In this review, the use of liquid membrane technology in treating/recovering copper and silver from industrial e-waste leached solutions was highlighted. It also assembles critical information on the organic phase (carrier and diluent) and stripping phase in liquid membrane formulation for selective copper and silver. In addition, the utilization of green diluent, ionic liquids, and synergist carrier was also included since it gained prominence attention latterly. The future prospects and challenges of this technology were also discussed to ensure the industrialization of technology. Herein, a potential process flowchart for the valorization of e-waste is also proposed.

Abstract
An anti-corrosion inhibitor is one of the most useful methods to prevent metal corrosion toward different media. In comparison with small molecular inhibitors, a polymeric inhibitor can integrate more adsorption groups and generate a synergetic effect, which has been widely used in industry and become a hot topic in academic research. Generally, both natural polymer-based inhibitors and synthetic polymeric inhibitors have been developed. Herein, we summarize the recent progress of polymeric inhibitors during the last decade, especially the structure design and application of synthetic polymeric inhibitor and related hybrid/composite.

Abstract
Utilization of ionic liquids (ILs) for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture is continuously growing, and further understanding of the factors that influence its solubility (notably for new ILs) is crucial. Herein, CO2 absorption of two 1,2,4-triazolium-based ILs was compared with imidazolium-based Ils of different anions, namely bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, tetrafluoroborate, and glycinate. The CO2 absorption capacity was determined using an isochoric saturation method and compared with predicted solubility employing COnductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS). To gain an understanding of the effects of cations and anions of the ILs on the CO2 solubility, the molecular orbitals energy levels were calculated using TURBOMOLE. Triazolium-based ILs exhibit higher absorption capacity when compared to imidazolium-based ILs for the same anions. The results also showed that the anions’ energy levels are more determinant towards solubility than the cations’ energy levels, which can be explained by the higher tendency of CO2 to accept electrons than to donate them.

Abstract
The progress and use of effective and economic anticorrosive resources are in high mandate due to huge safety and economic concerns about corrosion. Significant advancements have already been achieved that help in minimizing corrosion costs up to US $375 to US $875 billion annually. The use of zeolites in anticorrosive and self-healing coatings is well-studied and documented in many reports. The self-healing property of zeolite-based coatings is attributed to their ability to provide anticorrosive protection in the defected areas through forming protective oxide films i.e. passivation. The synthesis of zeolites from the traditional hydrothermal method is associated with several drawbacks including their high cost and discharge of harmful gases such as oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and greenhouse gases (CO2 and CO). In view of this, some green approaches such as solvent-free, organotemplate-free, use of safer organic templates, green solvents (e.g. ILs) and energy efficient (MW and US) heating, one-step reactions (OSRs) etc. are adopted in the green synthesis of zeolites. Recently, the self-healing properties of greenly synthesized zeolites are documented along with their mechanism of corrosion inhibition.

Abstract
Increased attention has been given to the removal of ionic liquids (ILs) from natural water environments. In this work, 5 kinds of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazoliumtetrafluoroborate ([Cnmim][BF4] (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10)) ILs were degraded in an ultrasonic zero-valent zinc (ZVZ) and activated carbon (AC) micro-electrolysis system. Optimization of degradation conditions and the degradation levels were studied by high performance liquid chromatography, the surface morphology of the ZVZ and AC changed before and after the reaction were observed by scanning electron microscope. The degradation intermediates were detected by gas chromatography- mass spectrometry and ion chromatography, and inferred the degradation pathway. The degradation effect of [C4mim][BF4] was best with ultrasonic assistance, pH 3 and an AC/ZVZ ratio of 1:1. The degradation of [Cnmim][BF4] in aqueous solution exceeded 91.7% in 120 min, and the mineralization level exceeded 88.9%. The surface of smooth and dense ZVZ particles became loose flocculent and the porous surface of AC became larger and rougher after reaction. The degradation pathway suggested that the imidazolium ring was sulfurized or oxidized, and then the ring was opened to form N-alkyl formamide and N-methyl formamide. ZVZ/AC micro-electrolysis combined with ultrasonic irradiation is an effective method to remove ILs, which provides new insight into IL degradation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This paper focuses on the chemical and physical adsorption of 1-hexyl-2,3-dimethyl imidazolium bromide (HDMIMBr), 1-decyl-2,3-dimethyl imidazolium bromide (DDMIMBr), and 1-hexadecyl-2,3-dimethyl imidazolium bromide (C16DMIMBr) on the surface of mild steel at high temperature in order to explore the mechanism of a corrosion inhibitor in a complex environment. METHODS Gravimetric, scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical tests explored the corrosion inhibition performance from the experimental level. Quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations reveal the corrosion inhibition mechanism from the molecular scale. RESULTS The results show that the longer the alkyl chain of the three corrosion inhibitors studied, the better the corrosion inhibition performance. This is due to the hydrophobic effect of the long alkyl chain, which has its own synergistic effect and then self-assembles to form an adsorption film with a multilayer structure. CONCLUSION This dense adsorption film makes corrosion inhibitors a good application prospect in complex corrosive environments.

Abstract
Corrosion is considered to be the most severe problem facing alloys and metals, one that causes potentially dangerous industrial issues such as the deterioration of buildings and machinery, and corrosion in factory tanks and pipelines in petroleum refineries, leading to limited lifetime and weak efficacy of such systems. In this work, novel CeO2-nanoparticle-loaded carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was successfully prepared by using a simple method. The structural configuration of the prepared CeO2-nanoparticle-loaded CMC was investigated by FE-SEM/EDX, TEM, FT-IR, and thermal analyses. The corrosion protection proficiency of uncoated and coated mild steel with CeO2-CMC systems in 1.0 M HCl solutions was studied by EOCP-time, EIS, and PDP tools. Moreover, the relationship between the structure of coating films and their corrosion protection was confirmed by DFT calculation and MC simulation. The obtained findings from the studied methods showed that the prepared CeO2-CMC-coated films reported high corrosion resistance. The protection capacity augmented with ceria presents an increase of up to 3% to achieve 98.4%. DFT calculation and MC simulation confirmed the influence of the chemical construction of coated films on its protection capacity, which was in accordance with the experimental results.

Effectiveness of Some Novel Ionic Liquids on Mild Steel Corrosion Protection in Acidic Environment: Experimental and Theoretical Inspections. MATERIALS 2022; 15:ma15062326. Abstract
Three ionic liquids (ILs)-1-butyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium Imidazolate (BMPyrIM), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium Imidazolate (BMImIM), and bis(1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium Imidazolate) (BBMImIM)-were synthesized and examined experimentally and theoretically as potential inhibitors for mild steel corrosion in HCl (1.0 M) solution. To our knowledge, two of the ILs successfully synthesized in our laboratory named BMPyrIM and BBMImIM are novel. Different electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)), surface and structural (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)) and theoretical (Density functional theory (DFT)) techniques were utilized to confirm their use as efficient environmentally safe inhibitors. These ionic liquids were designed to study the cation effect (imidazolium and pyrrolidinium) and the dimeric effect of the imidazolium-based IL. A pronounced inhibiting effect was recorded using the optimum concentration (5 × 10-3 M) of BBMImIM with protection efficiency of 98.6% compared to 94.3% and 92.4% for BMImIM and BMPyrIM, respectively. The investigated ILs act as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitors and their protection obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The results obtained by SEM, EDS and AFM confirmed the mild steel protection by the formation of protective film of the ILs on the steel surface resulted in less damaged surfaces compared with the blank solution. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations illustrated the electronic structure of the investigated ILs and their optimized adsorptiοn configurations on mild steel surface. The findings from the different techniques helped to provide a supported interpretation of the inhibition mechanism.
