Equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic studies of Cr(VI) adsorption from aqueous solution onto manganese oxide coated sand grain (MOCSG)

Removal of thallium by MnOx coated limestone sand filter through regeneration of KMnO4: Combination of physiochemical and biochemical actions

Treatment of industrial thallium(Tl)-containing wastewater is crucial for mitigating environmental risks and health threats associated with this toxic metal. The incorporation of Mn oxides (MnOx) into the filtration system is a promising solution for efficient Tl(I) removal. However, further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanism behind MnOx-enhanced filtration and the rules of its stable operation. In this study, limestone, a cost-effective material, was selected as the filter media. Raw water with Mn(II), Tl(I), and other pollutants was prepared after a thorough investigation of actual industrial wastewater conditions. KMnO4 was added to induce the formation of MnO2 on limestone surfaces, while long-term operation led to enrichment of manganese oxidizing microorganisms (MnOM). Results revealed a dual mechanism. Firstly, most Mn(II) were oxidized by KMnO4 to form MnO2 attaching to limestone sands, and both Tl(I) and residual Mn(II) were adsorbed onto the newly formed MnO2. Subsequently, enzymes secreted by MnOM facilitated oxidation of remaining Mn(II), resulting in the generation of biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx) with numerous vacancies during long-term operation. The generated BioMnOx not only adsorbed Mn(II) and Tl(I) but also promoted their oxidation process. This approach offers an effective and sustainable method for removing both Mn(II) and Tl(I) from industrial wastewater, thereby addressing the challenges posed by thallium-contaminated effluents.

Removal of chromium from water using manganese (II, III) oxides coated sand: adsorption and transformation of Cr(VI) and Cr(III)

A manganese coated sand (MCS) sorbent containing manganese (II,III) oxides was developed for adsorption and transformation of chromium [Cr(VI) and Cr(III)] with potential application in flow-through permeable media adsorption filters. Characterization of the MCS sorbent using XRD and XPS showed that the oxides of manganese (II) and manganese (III) were present on the MCS sorbent surface. Adsorption of both Cr(VI) and Cr(III) onto the MCS sorbent occurred over a broad pH range from 3 to 10. Surface charge analysis of the MCS sorbent determined a pHPZC of 7.8, which may facilitate the uptake of both oxy-anionic Cr(VI) species and cationic Cr(III) species. Favorable adsorption of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) onto the MCS sorbent occurred according to the Langmuir and the Freundlich adsorption equations, with a higher adsorption capacity for Cr(III) than Cr(VI). Adsorption parameters from the Langmuir, the Freundlich and the Temkin adsorption equations showed a stronger binding of Cr(VI) than Cr(III). Adsorption of Cr(III) decreased with increasing calcium concentration while adsorption of Cr(VI) decreased with increasing concentration of common anions found in natural water in the following order: phosphate > sulfate> bicarbonate. Transformation of chromium occurred on the surface of the MCS sorbent due to the partial reduction of Cr(VI) and the partial oxidation of Cr(III), which may be attributed to the role of surface manganese (II,III) oxides as either reducing or oxidizing agents. The MCS sorbent is a recyclable and sustainable adsorbent for removal of chromium from water with an environmental impact comparable to ion-exchange technology.

Effective aqueous chromate treatment using triethanolamine anacardate coated magnetic nanoparticles

Low-cost adsorbents derived from agricultural by-products incorporated magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) are promising for wastewater treatment. They are always preferred due to their great performance and easy separation. This study reports cobalt superparamagnetic (CoFe₂O₄) nanoparticles (NPs) incorporated with triethanolamine (TEA) based surfactants from cashew nut shell liquid, namely TEA-CoFe₂O₄, for the removal of chromium (VI) ions from aqueous solutions. To have detailed characteristics of the morphology and structural properties, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were employed. The fabricated TEA-CoFe₂O₄ particles exhibit soft and superparamagnetic properties, which make the nanoparticles easily recycled by using a magnet. Chromate adsorption on the TEA-CoFe₂O₄ nanomaterials reached an optimal efficiency of 84.3% at pH = 3 with the initial adsorbent dose of 10 g/L and chromium (VI) concentration of 40 mg/L. The TEA-CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles can maintain the effective adsorption of chromium (VI) ion (by 29% of efficiency loss) and retain the magnetic separation using a magnet up to three cycles of the regeneration, which promise a high potential of this low-cost adsorbent for long-term treatment of heavy metal ions from polluted waters.

Effects of humic acids on the adsorption of Pb(II) ions onto biofilm-developed microplastics in aqueous ecosystems

Microplastics (MPs), as emerging contaminants can behave as carriers for heavy metals in the water environments. Although the adsorption performance of heavy metals on MPs has been widely investigated, the effects of humic acids (HA) on the adsorption have seldom been explored. The authors were compared the Pb(II) adsorption onto biofilm-developed polyvinyl chloride (Bio-PVC) MPs with Pb(II) adsorption onto virgin PVC MPs (V-PVC), and explored the relationship between surface characteristics and the adsorption properties in the coexistence of HA. Our results showed that due to a larger specific surface area and more oxygen containing groups, Bio-PVC had a larger adsorption capability with a value of 3.57 mg/g than original ones (1.85 mg/g) due to its huge specific surface area and more oxygen containing groups. Microbial community analysis showed that the predominate bacteria in biofilms as Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes. Notably, the Pb(II) adsorption onto the V-PVC surfaces was increased, but the adsorption capacities of Pb(II) on Bio-PVC were suppressed with increasing HA. With the co-existence of HA, the increasing complexation and electrostatic attraction had attributed to the increased Pb(II) adsorption ability on V-PVC. Except for its competitive ability, HA has a shield effect which decreases the sorption sites on Bio-PVC. Overall, our findings provide a better understanding of the HA effect on the adsorption mechanism of heavy metals onto MPs in aquatic ecosystems.

Arsenic adsorption by carboxylate and amino modified polystyrene micro- and nanoplastics: kinetics and mechanisms

We investigated adsorption characteristics of As(III) and As(V) onto two different functionalized polystyrene (PS) microplastics (MPs). Our results show that there is the potential for PS MPs to adsorb both As(III) and As(V). Using a particle size of 80-82 nm, maximum As(III) and As(V) adsorption capacities of 0.57 mg/g and 0.37 mg/g were obtained by PS-COOH MPs. These capacities were markedly higher than those for PS-NH₂ MPs, which were 0.41 mg/g and 0.27 mg/g, respectively. The pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model was found to effectively describe the sorption kinetics of As(III)/As(V) on two different functionalized PS MPs. Langmuir isotherms better represented the equilibrium adsorption results. The kinetic models, XPS, and FTIR results indicate that hydrogen bonding, hydroxyl complexation, and outer-sphere surface complexation may have partly contributed to adsorption of As onto PS MPs. Adsorption capacity markedly decreases with increasing salinity or presence of humic acids (HA), suggesting an inhibiting effect of salinity and HA through outer-sphere complexation. These findings confirm that microplastics have great potential to adsorb As and hence are ultimately highly likely to affect the environmental behavior of As in an ecosystem.

Immobilization of Diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum with Filamentous Fungi and Its Kinetics

Immobilizing microalgae cells in a hyphal matrix can simplify harvest while producing novel mycoalgae products with potential food, feed, biomaterial, and renewable energy applications; however, limited quantitative information to describe the process and its applicability under various conditions leads to difficulties in comparing across studies and scaling-up. Here, we demonstrate the immobilization of both active and heat-deactivated marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (UTEX 466) using different loadings of fungal pellets (Aspergillus sp.) and model the process through kinetics and equilibrium models. Active P. tricornutum cells were not required for the fungal-assisted immobilization process and the fungal isolate was able to immobilize more than its original mass of microalgae. The Freundlich isotherm model adequately described the equilibrium immobilization characteristics and indicated increased normalized algae immobilization (g algae removed/g fungi loaded) under low fungal pellet loadings. The kinetics of algae immobilization by the fungal pellets were found to be adequately modeled using both a pseudo-second order model and a model previously developed for fungal-assisted algae immobilization. These results provide new insights into the behavior and potential applications of fungal-assisted algae immobilization.

Transformation of solid plastic waste to activated carbon fibres for wastewater treatment

In this study, the solid waste plastic was converted into activated carbon fibres through carbonization and chemical activation process. The morphological structure, composition, thermal stability and pore structure of the produced activated carbon materials were characterized. The results revealed that the activation process substantially increases the specific surface area of carbon materials via forming large micropores and mesopores (0.01-0.85 cm³g^-1) within average nano size range of 50-100 nm. This study provides an effective means to remove the thymol blue dye via adsorption over activated carbon (ACs) as adsorbent. Batch adsorption of thymol blue was conducted to verify the effect of variety of pH, dye concentrations, contact time, adsorbent dose and temperature. The highest dye removal efficiency (approximately 98.05%) of ACs generated from waste plastic polybags, cups and bottles was observed at 10 ppm of thymol blue dye. The results also exhibited that the dye adsorption was favourable at basic pH (9.0) and increasing amount of adsorbent dosage promotes the dye removal efficiency. The excellent dye removal performance was primarily due to the presence of higher available surface area on the surface of developed carbon fibres. In addition, the current results have given the large overview and useful information of dye removal properties by adsorption isotherm and kinetic measurements. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamic prospective of formed ACs explored the physical, spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process. The as prepared ACs provided easy regeneration of adsorbents with fast response which further suggests the efficiency of nanoparticles to promote their usage up to 5 consecutive cycles. The current work illustrated that better means to transform solid waste plastic into carbon fibres for providing effective and cheap viable option for the fast removal of thymol blue dye from waste water samples.

Examining the Effect of a Chitosan Biopolymer on Alkali-Activated Inorganic Material for Aqueous Pb(II) and Zn(II) Sorption

Biopolymers and alkali-activated materials have attracted a great deal of attention as adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal contaminants from aqueous solutions. Both materials are sustainable and feature unique properties, but biopolymers are relatively more expensive or difficult to prepare and exhibit low mechanical and surface properties, a narrow pH range, and thermal stability. In this study, hybrid adsorbents were prepared from both types of material, by alkali activation of low-cost fly ash precursors accompanied by incorporation of 0-2%_mass chitosan biopolymer. Two types of alkaline activating solutions, NaOH and Na₂SiO₃, were employed to generate two sets of hybrid adsorbents with varying chitosan contents. The effect of the chitosan dosage on the aqueous Pb(II) and Zn(II) sorption efficiency was also investigated. The adsorbents exhibited 98-100% removal efficiencies for both metals, but the sorption of Zn(II) was generally higher than that of Pb(II). The addition of 0.1-2.0%_mass chitosan resulted in very little improvement in the overall efficiency of the adsorbents. In contrast, 0.05%_mass chitosan led to a decrease in the sorption efficiency; this was linked to the decrease in the adsorbents' ζ potential. The Na₂SiO₃-activated materials featured larger BET surface areas and better overall sorption performance, while the NaOH-activated materials showed the worst Pb(II) sorption performance and hence more noticeable improvement upon addition of chitosan. Mechanistic investigation shows that the sorption process follows second-order kinetics and is a chemisorption-driven process.

Improvement in salt tolerance of Iris pseudacorus L. in constructed wetland by exogenous application of salicylic acid and calcium chloride

Wetland plants play a major role in the process of wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs). The inhibitory effect of salt stress on plants may reduce the performance of CWs. In this study, salicylic acid (SA) and/or calcium ion (Ca²⁺) were used for root pretreatment to alleviate the salt stress in Iris pseudacorus L. The results showed that root pretreatment with SA and/or Ca²⁺ improved the response of Iris pseudacorus L. to salinity by increasing growth, photosynthetic pigments, Pro content, enzymes activities and K⁺ content. In addition, SA and/or Ca²⁺ application in saline conditions decreased the relative conductivity and content of malondialdehyde. RNA-seq analysis showed the expression of hormone signaling genes, potassium ion transporter genes, oxidative stress genes and photosynthesis genes were up-regulated after pretreating with SA and CaCl₂. In conclusion, the addition of SA and Ca²⁺ could improve the saline wastewater treatment efficiency of CWs by enhancing the salt tolerance of Iris pseudacorus L.

Pentaclethra macrophylla stem bark extract anchored on functionalized MWCNT-spent molecular sieve nanocomposite for the biosorption of hexavalent chromium

nsufficient innovative research on the sequestration of Cr(VI) from the aquatic ecosystem has made Cr(VI) a recalcitrant water contaminant that often affects water sources. In this work, a novel plant anchor-nanocomposite was fabricated from the spent molecular sieve, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and the extract from the stem bark of Pentaclethra macrophylla. It was envisaged that due to the phytochemical constituent of the modifier, this nanocomposite could also act as potent adsorbents for the treatment of Cr(VI) polluted water. To the best of our knowledge, the application of Pentaclethra macrophylla stem bark extract as a modifier for the green fabrication of nanocomposite has not been reported. The resulting composites showed good uptake capacity for Cr(VI) as well as efficient reusability.

Multi wall carbon nanotubes application for treatment of Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater; Modeling of batch & column experiments

Multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are carbonaceous nanomaterials with novel adsorption properties. In this study MWCNTs were used as adsorbents for hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), and the influence of operating parameters, on adsorption process, such as pH, MWCNTs and Cr(VI) concentration, and contact time have been investigated. Batch and column experiments were carried out in order to investigate the removal efficiency of MWCNTs for different Cr(VI) concentrations related to groundwater polluted by either anthropogenic activities or by geogenic processes. The experimental results showed that pH was the most crucial factor for adsorption efficiency. Cr(VI) adsorption was inversely proportional with pH value and more specifically adsorption was significantly decreased for pH values higher than 7. The effect of adsorbent's concentration showed the high adsorption capacity of MWCNTs. The adsorption process was very fast since was almost completed within 1 h. Different isotherm models have been adopted to interpret the experimental equilibrium data, as well as two mass-transfer based model were used to describe the dynamic behavior of Cr(VI) sorption phenomenon in column experiments.

Adsorption of hexavalent chromium from water using manganese-aluminum coated sand: Kinetics, equilibrium, effect of pH and ionic strength

Removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from water was evaluated using a low-cost coated sand adsorbent for potential application in a flow-through filter system using permeable adsorption media. Manganese-aluminum coated sand (MACS) was investigated as a hybrid metal oxide based adsorbent due to the potential efficacy of manganese oxide and aluminum oxide for adsorption of Cr(VI) from water. Adsorbent characterization was performed using XRD, SEM/EDX, XPS and BET. Adsorption experiments were performed to determine adsorption capacity and kinetics. The effect of pH, common co-existing ions found in natural water, and the recyclability of adsorbent were investigated. Adsorbent characterization showed that the MACS sorbent contained aluminum oxide, manganese (III) oxide and manganese (IV) oxide. Adsorption followed the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption equations, indicating favorable adsorption of Cr(VI) onto the MACS sorbent, while results from the Dubinin-Radushkevich equation were suggestive of physical adsorption of Cr(VI). Cr(VI) adsorption onto the MACS sorbent followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The adsorbent was effective in removing Cr(VI) over a broad pH range from 3 to 9.5, while surface charge analysis confirmed the adsorption of Cr(VI) onto the acidic surface of the MACS sorbent with a pH_PZC of 9.72. The presence of co-existing ions bicarbonate, sulfate and phosphate in water resulted in a decrease in Cr(VI) uptake in the following order: phosphate > bicarbonate > sulfate. The presence of calcium resulted in a slight increase in Cr(VI) uptake. The MACS sorbent is a recyclable sorbent for adsorption and removal of Cr(VI) from water within 30 minutes of contact time.

Removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater by artificial zeolite spheres loaded with nano Fe-Al bimetallic oxide in constructed wetland

In order to solve the problems of poor adsorption capacity and low stability in treating heavy metal wastewater with traditional constructed wetland (CW) fillers, a new type of filler, artificial zeolite spheres loaded with nano Fe-Al bimetallic oxide (hereinafter referred to as composite zeolite spheres), was prepared for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater. The results indicated that nano Fe-Al bimetallic oxide was an effective material for Cr(VI) removal with the maximal removal efficiency of 84.9% at initial Cr(VI) concentration of 20 mg/L (pH = 3). The micro-reactor experiment further verified that composite zeolite spheres had better removal performance on Cr(VI) than traditional filler. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and X-Ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) results demonstrated that -OH groups reduced Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and then the Cr(III) was removed by forming Cr_xFe_1-x(OH)₃ precipitation with Fe(III) or formed Cr(OH)₃ precipitation with Al-OH through the ion exchange. This study provided an effective approach for treating Cr(VI) wastewater by using a new composite zeolite in constructed wetlands (CWs).

The Influence of Salinity on the Removal of Ni and Zn by Sorption onto Iron Oxide- and Manganese Oxide-Coated Sand

The influence of salinity on the single and binary sorption of Ni and Zn onto iron oxide- and manganese oxide-coated sand (IOCS and MOCS) was investigated at pH = 5. The single sorption experimental data were fitted to Freundlich, Langmuir, Dubinin–Radushkevich, and Sips models, and a nonlinear sorption isotherm was observed (NF = 0.309–0.567). The higher Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area (ABET) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) of MOCS contributed to the higher maximum sorption capacities (qmL) of Ni and Zn than that of IOCS. The Ni sorption capacities in the single sorption were higher than that in the binary sorption, while the Zn sorption capacities in the single sorption were less than that in the binary sorption. The single and binary sorptions onto both IOCS and MOCS were affected by the salinity, as indicated by the decrease in sorption capacities. Satisfactory predictions were shown by the binary sorption model fitting including P-factor, ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST)–Freundlich, IAST–Langmuir, and IAST–Sips; among these, the P-factor model showed the best fitting results in predicting the influence of salinity of Ni and Zn in the binary sorption system onto IOCS and MOCS. IOCS and MOCS offer a sustainable reactive media in a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) for removing Ni and Zn in the presence of salinity.

The Immobilization Effect of Natural Mineral Materials on Cr(VI) Remediation in Water and Soil

The effects of sepiolite, montmorillonite, and attapulgite on the removal and immobilization of Cr(VI) in water and soil were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterizations showed that the purities of these three mineral materials decreased in the following order: montmorillonite > attapulgite > sepiolite, and that their surface molecular bond types were similar. The adsorption potential of Cr(VI) in aqueous solutions of the three mineral materials was in the following order: sepiolite > attapulgite > montmorillonite. The adsorption mechanism for attapulgite was consistent with the Freundlich isotherm adsorption model, whereas that for montmorillonite was more consistent with the Langmuir model. Sepiolite had a good fitting effect for both isothermal adsorption models. For montmorillonite and attapulgite, a lower pH corresponded to a higher removal of Cr(VI). For sepiolite, however, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) from an aqueous solution was the lowest at a pH of approximately 5.0. The results of the soil toxicity characteristic leaching procedure showed that, following the addition of 15% sepiolite, attapulgite, or montmorillonite to the contaminated soil, Cr(VI) concentrations in the leachates decreased by 16.8%, 18.9%, and 15.9%, respectively, and the total Cr concentrations in the leachates were reduced by 21.2%, 29.2%, and 17.6%. Of the three mineral materials, attapulgite demonstrated the highest Cr(VI) immobilization efficiency in soil. This study emphasizes the effect of attapulgite on the immobilization of Cr(VI) in soil and aqueous solutions, thus providing a theoretical basis for the potential application of natural mineral material remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated aqueous solutions and soils.

Simultaneous manganese adsorption and biotransformation by Streptomyces violarus strain SBP1 cell-immobilized biochar

Consumption of water containing high proportions of manganese could cause Parkinson's like symptoms and damage the central nervous systems. This study aims to investigate the potential of manganese removal through the development of microbial cell-immobilized biochar. The wood vinegar industry generates a large volume of carbonized wood waste (natural biochar) from the pyrolytic process. This is the first investigation utilizing this low value waste combined with biological treatment for water purification. Raw and hydrogen peroxide-modified biochars were used to immobilize an effective manganese-oxidizing bacterium, Streptomyces violarus strain SBP1 (SBP1). The results demonstrated that the modified biochar had a higher proportion of oxygen-containing functional groups leading to better manganese removal. Manganese adsorption by the modified biochar fitted pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models with the maximum adsorption capacity of 1.15 mg g^-1. The modified biochar with SBP1 provided the highest removal efficiency at 78%. The advanced synchrotron analyses demonstrated that manganese removal by the biochar with SBP1 is due to the synergistic combination of manganese adsorption by biochars and biological oxidation by SBP1.

Nano-engineered Adsorbent for the Removal of Dyes from Water: A Review

Background:

The huge quantity of wastewater, containing poisonous and hazardous dyes, is released by various industries which pollute water in direct and indirect ways. Most of the dyes are a dangerous class of water contaminants which have affected the environment drastically. Some dyes such as congo red, rhodamine B, methylene blue, methyl violet, and crystal violet are a serious threat to human beings.

Remediation Method:

Numerous methods are available for the removal of dyes from water. Adsorption, being a superior and eco-friendly technique, has advantage of eliminating organic dyes because of the availability of materials as adsorbents. The inexpensive nanomaterials are a more attractive choice for remediation of various dyes due to their unique properties and offer an adequate pathway to adsorb any organic dye from water to overcome its hazardous effects on human health.

Results:

In this review, we have discussed the latest literature related to various types of synthesis, characterization and uses as adsorbent for highly adsorptive removal capacity of nanoparticles for organic dyes.

Conclusion:

Adsorption technology provides an attractive pathway for further research and improvement in more efficient nanoparticles, with higher adsorption capacity, for numerous dyes to eliminate the dyes discharged from various industries and thus reduce the contamination of water. Therefore, nanocomposites may contribute to future prospective water treatment process.

As(III) adsorption onto different-sized polystyrene microplastic particles and its mechanism

We systematically investigated the surface characteristics of polystyrene microplastic particles (PSMPs) prepared by ball milling to impart a porous surface structure and special surface characteristics, and studied the mechanism of adsorption of As(III) onto PSMPs. The sizes of the PSMPs prepared by ball milling for 2, 4, and 8 h were in the ranges of 0.1-1, 1-10, and 10-100 μm, respectively. That is, the longer the milling time is, the larger the specific surface area of the particles is. Moreover, the higher the point of zero charge is, the higher the adsorbed amount of As(III) is. The highest adsorption rate of As(III) onto PSMPs was found to be 1.12 mg g^-1. After 1200 min, the adsorption reached equilibrium, and a pseudo-second-order model better fitted the As(III) adsorption kinetics. The Langmuir and Freundlich models could well describe the adsorption isotherms. Furthermore, hydrogen bonds between As(III) and PSMPs were broken at high temperatures, resulting in a decrease in As(III) adsorption onto PSMP, which indicated that the adsorption process was exothermic. Increases in the pH and concentrations of interfering nitrate and phosphate ions in the solution led to inhibited As(III) adsorption of PSMPs. The electrostatic potential of most areas of the PSMP surface was positive, and the H atom on the carboxyl group exhibited a very large positive potential (+56.6 kcal/mol), and thus attracted arsenic oxyanions. Thus, it was determined that As(III) adsorbed to the surface of PSMPs through hydrogen bonding with the carboxyl group. Electrostatic forces and non-covalent interactions are the key mechanisms affecting the adsorption of As(III) onto PSMPs. This work provides a clear theoretical basis for the behavior of the PSMP as an arsenic carrier and might aid to improve the environmental toxicity of arsenic.

Fe-Mn-Ce oxide-modified biochar composites as efficient adsorbents for removing As(III) from water: adsorption performance and mechanisms

In this study, a novel Fe-Mn-Ce oxide-modified biochar composite (FMCBC) was synthesized via pyrolysis to enhance the adsorption capacity of biochar (BC). Scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed that Fe, Mn, and Ce were successfully loaded onto the surface of the BC. A series of adsorption experiments showed that the FMCBC exhibited improved adsorption of As(III) in an aqueous environment. The adsorption process was well expressed by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of FMCBC reached 8.74 mg L^-1, which was 3.27 times greater than that of BC. The pH of the solution significantly influenced the adsorption of As(III), where the amount of As(III) adsorbed by FMCBC was maximized at pH 3. A high phosphate concentration inhibited adsorption, whereas nitrate and sulfate ions promoted As(III) adsorption and increased the FMCBC adsorption capacity. Similarly, with increasing humic acid concentration, the adsorption capacity of FMCBC for As(III) decreased; however, a low concentration of humic acid promoted adsorption. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the adsorption of As(III) by FMCBC occurred through redox and surface complexation reactions. Therefore, FMCBC has excellent potential for purifying arsenic-contaminated water.

Treatment of Post-Hydrothermal Liquefaction Wastewater (PHWW) for Heavy Metals, Nutrients, and Indicator Pathogens

Recycling post-hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater (PHWW) may allow the use of nutrients in the aqueous phase that may otherwise go unused. PHWW is an attractive option for use as fertilizer in systems like crop production. However, there are potential contaminants in the PHWW that may inhibit crop growth or pose a food safety risk. This study investigated the concentrations of heavy metals and nutrients in the PHWW, as well as the presence of indicator pathogens. In addition, four different water treatment methods were used: (1) dilution of raw PHWW, (2) sand filtration after dilution, (3) sand and carbon filtration after dilution, and (4) reverse osmosis after dilution. Our results indicate that the concentrations of cadmium, lead, and arsenic in raw PHWW were well below the maximum recommended concentrations set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) for Water Reuse. In addition, the treatment methods in this study achieved percent removals ranging from 82–100% for cadmium, 99–100% for mercury, 75–99.5% for lead, and 71–99% for arsenic. Nitrogen in raw PHWW was predominantly in the total N form, preventing it from being accessible to plants. After nitrification was induced, the concentration of NO3 + NO2 increased by 1.75 mg/L in the untreated 5% PHWW mixture, but remained unchanged or decreased for all other treatments and mixtures. There were no E. coli or coliform colonies detected in the raw PHWW, or in any PHWW mixtures. All PHWW mixtures with and without treatment are within US EPA guidelines for metals for irrigation water reuse. However, fertilizer supplementation may be required for PHWW to be suitable for crop production, as the low concentrations of NO3 + NO2 may prove challenging for growing crops.

Nigella sativa seed based nanocomposite-MnO2/BC: An antibacterial material for photocatalytic degradation, and adsorptive removal of Methylene blue from water

Antimicrobial Nigella sativa seed-based nanocomposite, MnO₂/BC, was synthesized and utilized for the water purification through adsorption, and the photocatalytic degradation. MnO₂/BC was prepared by co-precipitation method, and characterized using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, and DSC techniques. The composite was investigated for inhibition of bacterial cells growth. FT-IR spectrum indicated the presence of oxygenous groups on the surface; TGA and DSC showed thermal degradation; and XRD, SEM, and TEM investigations indicated amorphous, and porous nature of MnO₂/BC having particle size of 190-220 nm. The nanocomposite inhibited the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria cells in water. The adsorption of Methylene blue from water was investigated in batch method in terms of amount of MnO₂/BC, dye concentration, pH, time, and temperature. 1.0 g L^-1 of MnO₂/BC removed more than 98% of Methylene blue from aqueous solution having concentration of 10 mg L^-1 and pH 7.0 at 27 °C. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of MnO₂/BC was 185.185 mg g^-1 at 45 °C. The adsorption was an endothermic process which obeyed Freundlich isotherm, and pseudo-second order kinetics. Therefore, the Methylene blue binding onto MnO₂/BC surface was site-specific partially through the weak hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions. The photocatalytic activity of MnO₂/BC has been investigated by degrading the Methylene blue molecules/ions in water under the sunlight and 85% of degradation was achieved during 120 min irradiation. The dye was desorbed at lower pH and regenerated MnO₂/BC was used for second cycle of Methylene blue adsorption. The results obtained for this study are much better than the previous Methylene blue adsorption studies with acid washed Black cumin seeds and MnFe₂O₄/BC for which the capacities were 73.529 mg g^-1 and 10.070 mg g^-1 at 27 °C, respectively (J. Mol. liq. 2018a, 264, 275-284; J. Clean. Prod. 2018a, 200, 996-1008).

Removal of chromium(vi) from polluted wastewater by chemical modification of silica gel with 4-acetyl-3-hydroxyaniline

In the current study, a new adsorbent that is insoluble in water and many acid solutions and has a high adsorption capacity for Cr(vi) metal ions was synthesized. In the synthesis process, 3-chloropropyl-trimethoxysilane (CPTS) was first modified on a silica gel (Si) surface. Secondly, 4-acetyl-3-hydroxyaniline (AHAP) was immobilized on the modified silica gel compound (Si-CPTS). As a result of the immobilization process, a new adsorbent compound named Si-CPTS-AHAP (silica gel-3-chloropropyltrimethoxy silane 4-acetyl-3-hydroxyaniline) was obtained, which was used to separate Cr(vi) ions from aqueous solution (K₂Cr₂O₇) and industrial wastewater. The material was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The amount of chromium adsorbed was detected by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The adsorption was evaluated using batch methods. The effects of temperature, pH, concentration, adsorbent amount and interaction time on the adsorption of Si-CPTS-AHAP were also investigated. The adsorption of Cr(vi) ions on Si-CPTS-AHAP was investigated via adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamic studies. The value of the isotherm parameters and the highest adsorption yields were calculated from the Dubinin–Radushkevich, Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm equations. Thermodynamic features such as entropy (ΔS), enthalpy (ΔH) and free energy (ΔG) were also calculated from the experimental results. The experimental results showed that the best recoveries of Cr(vi) metal ions are under the conditions of 180 min (interaction time), 0.05 g (adsorbent amount) and 323.15 K (temperature) at pH 2. Si-CPTS-AHAP can be used for the removal of poisonous pollutants in wastewater.

Use of a newly synthesized Si-CPTS-AHAP adsorbent in the removal of Cr(vi) ions in wastewater treatment systems may potentially lead to low cost and highly efficient heavy metal removal.

Surface water filtration using granular media and membranes: A review

Significant growth of the human population is expected in the future. Hence, the pressure on the already scarce natural water resources is continuously increasing. This work is an overview of membrane and filtration methods for the removal of pollutants such as bacteria, viruses and heavy metals from surface water. Microfiltration/Ultrafiltration (MF/UF) can be highly effective in eliminating bacteria and/or act as pre-treatment before Nanofiltration/Reverse Osmosis (NF/RO) to reduce the possibility of fouling. However, MF/UF membranes are produced through relatively intensive procedures. Moreover, they can be modified with chemical additives to improve their performance. Therefore, MF/UF applicability in less developed countries can be limited. NF shows high removal capability of certain contaminants (e.g. pharmaceutically active compounds and ionic compounds). RO is necessary for desalination purposes in areas where sea water is used for drinking/sanitation. Nevertheless, NF/RO systems require pre-treatment of the influent, increased electrical supply and high level of technical expertise. Thus, they are often a highly costly addition for countries under development. Slow Sand Filtration (SSF) is a simple and easy-to-operate process for the retention of solids, microorganisms and heavy metals; land use is a limiting factor, though. Rapid Sand Filtration (RSF) is an alternative responding to the need for optimized land use. However, it requires prior and post treatment stages to prevent fouling. Especially after coating with metal-based additives, sand filtration can constitute an efficient and sustainable treatment option for developing countries. Granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorbs organic compounds that were not filtered in previous treatment stages. It can be used in conjunction with other methods (e.g. MF and SSF) to face pollution that results from potentially outdated water network (especially in less developed areas) and, hence, produce water of acceptable drinking quality. Future research can focus on the potential of GAC production from alternative sources (e.g. municipal waste). Given the high production/operation/maintenance cost of the NF/RO systems, more cost-effective but equally effective alternatives can be implemented: e.g. (electro)coagulation/flocculation followed by MF/UF, SSF before/after MF/UF, MF/UF before GAC.

Designed functionalization of reduced graphene oxide for sorption of Cr(vi) over a wide pH range: a theoretical and experimental perspective

The present study illustrates a clear functionalization chemistry for the synthesis of guanidine functionalized reduced graphene oxide (GfG) for sorption of Cr(VI).
