Encapsulation of triclosan within 2-hydroxypropyl–β–cyclodextrin cavity and its application in the chemisorption of rhodamine B dye

Preparation and characterization of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare miller) essential oil/hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex and its application for chilled pork preservation

Fennel essential oil (FEO) a natural spice that has versatile biological activities. However, the direct use of FEO is limited due to its water insolubility and poor stability. Chilled pork is prone to spoilage during storage. To solve these problems, this study aimed to prepare an inclusion complex (IC) of FEO with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin via co-precipitation and apply it to the preservation of chilled pork. Results indicated that the optimal parameters were encapsulating temperature 37 °C, wall-core ratio 14:1 g/mL, stirring speed 600 r/min, and encapsulating time 240 min, obtaining an encapsulation efficiency of 83.75%. The results of scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance demonstrated the successful preparation of IC. The release of FEO from IC was controllable through adjusting the different temperatures and relative humidities. Furthermore, IC effectively delayed the spoilage of chilled pork and extended its shelf life by 6 days at 4 °C.

Formation of amygdalin/β-cyclodextrin derivatives inclusion complexes for anticancer activity assessment in human cervical carcinoma HeLa cell line

Nanoencapsulation has gained considerable attention because of its unique features and advantages in anticancer drug delivery. Amygdalin (AMY) is an anticancer compound, showing limitations in its applications by low stability. Herein, the inclusion complexes (ICs) of AMY with β-cyclodextrin (βCD), and its derivatives such as 2-hydroxypropyl-βCD (HPβCD) and methyl-βCD (MβCD) were fabricated. The fabricated AMY/CD-ICs were thoroughly evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence techniques. Double reciprocal profile study of the absorption and fluorescence spectra revealed that the AMY formed the ICs with βCD derivatives at a guest/host stoichiometric ratio of 1/1. The thermal stability of AMY was enhanced as the IC formation aid observed by the shift of thermal degradation temperature of AMY from the range of ∼ 220-250 °C to > 295 °C. Theoretical analyses of the energetic, electronic, and global reactivity parameters of the AMY/CD-ICs were evaluated using the PM3 method. Further assessment of the dissolution diagrams of AMY/CD-ICs revealed a burst release profile. In addition, cell toxicity was evaluated using the MTT assay, and the results showed that AMY/CD-ICs had significantly more efficacious in inhibiting HeLa cancer cells than AMY. These results proved that the IC formations with CDs significantly enhanced the anticancer activity of AMY.

Preparation and characterization of inclusion complex of Myristica fragrans Houtt. (nutmeg) essential oil with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin

Nutmeg essential oil (NEO) is a natural condimentwith versatile biological activities. However, the application of NEO in food has several limitations due to its poor stability and low aqueous solubility. To overcome the shortcomings, this paper focused on the preparation of the inclusion complex (IC) of NEO with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) by the coprecipitation method. The optimal condition was inclusion temperature 36 ℃, time 247 min, stirring speed 520 r/min, and wall-core ratio 12:1, resulting in a recovery of 80.63%. The formation of IC was verified by various methods such as scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The improvement of thermal stability, antioxidant, and nitrite scavenging activities of NEO after encapsulation was proven. Moreover, the controlled release of NEO from IC can be implemented by regulating the temperature and relative humidity. Overall, NEO/HP-β-CD IC has great application potential in food industries.

Adsorption of Fatty Acid on Beta-Cyclodextrin Functionalized Cellulose Nanofiber

Fatty acids in wastewater contribute to high chemical oxygen demand. The use of cellulose nanofiber (CNF) to adsorb the fatty acids is limited by its strong internal hydrogen bonding. This study aims to functionalize CNF with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and elucidate the adsorption behaviour which is yet to be explored. β-CD functionalized CNF (CNF/β-CD) was achieved by crosslinking of β-CD and citric acid. Functionalization using 7% (w/v) β-CD and 8% (w/v) citric acid enhanced mechanical properties by increasing its thermal decomposition. CNF/β-CD was more efficient in removing palmitic acid, showcased by double adsorption capacity of CNF/β-CD (33.14% removal) compared to CNF (15.62% removal). CNF/β-CD maintained its adsorption performance after five cycles compared to CNF, which reduced significantly after two cycles. At 25 °C, the adsorption reached equilibrium after 60 min, following a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The intraparticle diffusion model suggested chemical adsorption and intraparticle interaction as the controlling steps in the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity was 8349.23 mg g−1 and 10485.38 mg g−1 according to the Sips and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The adsorption was described as monolayer and endothermic, and it involved both a physisorption and chemisorption process. This is the first study to describe the adsorption behaviour of palmitic acid onto CNF/β-CD.

Analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry: An update for 2019-2020

This review is the tenth update of the original article published in 1999 on the application of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry to the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2020. Also included are papers that describe methods appropriate to analysis by MALDI, such as sample preparation techniques, even though the ionization method is not MALDI. The review is basically divided into three sections: (1) general aspects such as theory of the MALDI process, matrices, derivatization, MALDI imaging, fragmentation, quantification and the use of arrays. (2) Applications to various structural types such as oligo- and polysaccharides, glycoproteins, glycolipids, glycosides and biopharmaceuticals, and (3) other areas such as medicine, industrial processes and glycan synthesis where MALDI is extensively used. Much of the material relating to applications is presented in tabular form. The reported work shows increasing use of incorporation of new techniques such as ion mobility and the enormous impact that MALDI imaging is having. MALDI, although invented nearly 40 years ago is still an ideal technique for carbohydrate analysis and advancements in the technique and range of applications show little sign of diminishing.

Competitive removal mechanism to simultaneously incarcerate bisphenol A, triclosan and 4-tert-octylphenol within beta-cyclodextrin crosslinked citric acid used for encapsulation in polypropylene membrane protected-micro-solid-phase extraction

Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are extensively found in the environment and severely impacting human health. In addressing this issue, the beta-cyclodextrin crosslinked citric acid (BCD-CA) had been previously employed in membrane-protected micro-solid phase extraction for sequestering EDCs from water medium; and the findings revealed that BCD-CA possessed a selectivity property. On that account, the potential of BCD-CA towards competitive adsorption of selected EDCs was investigated in terms of adsorption mechanism and selectivity property. Factors that affected the removal efficiencies such as sample pH, sorbent dosage, contact time and initial concentration were evaluated. The characterization results revealed that the carbon percentage of BCD-CA had increased by 2.04%, while the hydrogen percentage had reduced by 1.83%, signifying the successful crosslinking of BCD-CA. Besides, the amount of active BCD was calculated to be 3.2 × 10^-7 mol, while the amount of carboxyl group was 2.48 × 10^-5 mol per 4 mg of BCD-CA. Moreover, BCD-CA was stable in an aqueous medium with the zeta potential obtained at -36.5 mV and had a high-water retention capacity (∼150%). The competitive adsorption mechanism by BCD-CA with EDCs followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm, suggesting that the adsorption process was dominated by chemisorption on the heterogeneous surface of the adsorbent. Thermodynamic results revealed that adsorption of 4-tert-octylphenol had the most negative ΔG value, indicating most favorable to be adsorbed by BCD-CA as opposed to triclosan and bisphenol A, which was coherent with the apparent formation constant results. These unique properties manifested the practicality of BCD-CA as a selective adsorbent to detect and remove EDCs from the water medium.

Magnetic NH2-MIL-101(Al)/Chitosan nanocomposite as a novel adsorbent for the removal of azithromycin: modeling and process optimization

In the present study, the magnetic NH₂-MIL-101(Al)/chitosan nanocomposite (MIL/Cs@Fe₃O₄ NCs) was synthesized and used in the removal of azithromycin (AZT) from an aqueous solution for the first time. The as-synthesized MIL/Cs@Fe₃O₄ NCs was characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, and VSM techniques. The effect of various key factors in the AZT adsorption process was modeled and optimized using response surface methodology based on central composite design (RSM-CCD). The low value of p-value (1.3101e-06) and RSD (1.873) parameters, along with the coefficient of determination > 0.997 implied that the developed model was well fitted with experimental data. Under the optimized conditions, including pH: 7.992, adsorbent dose: 0.279 g/L, time: 64.256 min and AZT concentration: 10.107 mg/L, removal efficiency and AZT adsorption capacity were obtained as 98.362 ± 3.24% and 238.553 mg/g, respectively. The fitting of data with the Langmuir isotherm (R²: 0.998, X²: 0.011) and Pseudo-second-order kinetics (R²: 0.999, X²: 0.013) showed that the adsorption process is monolayer and chemical in nature. ΔH° > 0, ΔS° > 0, and ∆G° < 0 indicated that AZT removal was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The effect of Magnesium on AZT adsorption was more complicated than other background ions. Reuse of the adsorbent in 10 consecutive experiments showed that removal efficiency was reduced by about 30.24%. The performance of MIL/Cs@Fe₃O₄ NCs under real conditions was also tested and promising results were achieved, except in the treatment of AZT from raw wastewater.

Electrospun Polymer-Free Nanofibers Incorporating Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin/Difenoconazole via Supramolecular Assembly for Antifungal Activity

In this study, flexible and self-standing hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin/difenoconazole inclusion complex (HPβCD/DZ-IC) nanofibers were prepared by polymer-free electrospinning, which exhibited potential to be a new fast-dissolving pesticide formulation. Scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy were applied to evaluate the morphology of nanofibers, which showed that the resulting HPβCD/DZ-IC nanofibers were bead-free and uniform. In addition, the proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) spectrum suggested a stoichiometric ratio of 1:0.9 (HPβCD/DZ). Other characterization methods, such as UV-vis absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), were applied in this study. On the one hand, UV-vis absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, FT-IR, XRD, and TGA provided useful information for the successful formation of an inclusion complex; on the other hand, the results of TGA indicated the thermal stability of DZ was enhanced after the formation of inclusion complexes. Besides, the phase solubility test could explain the increased water solubility of the nanofibers of inclusion complexes formed by DZ and HPβCD. The results of molecular docking studies demonstrated the most favorable binding interactions when HPβCD combined with DZ. The dissolution test and the antifungal performance test exhibited the characteristics of fast dissolution and the excellent antifungal performance of HPβCD/DZ-IC nanofibers, respectively.

Visible Light-Cured Antibacterial Collagen Hydrogel Containing Water-Solubilized Triclosan for Improved Wound Healing

Infection is one of several factors that can delay normal wound healing. Antibacterial wound dressings can therefore promote normal wound healing. In this study, we prepared an antibacterial wound dressing, consisting of visible light-cured methacrylated collagen (ColMA) hydrogel and a 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD)/triclosan (TCS) complex (CD-ic-TCS), and evaluated its wound healing effects in vivo. The 1H NMR spectra of ColMA and CD-ic-TCS revealed characteristic peaks at 1.73, 5.55, 5.94, 6.43, 6.64, 6.84, 6.95, 7.31, and 7.55 ppm, indicating successful preparation of the two material types. In addition, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy proved an inclusion complex formation between HP-β-CD and TCS, judging by a unique peak observed at 280 cm-1. Furthermore, ColMA/CD-ic-TCS exhibited an interconnected porous structure, controlled release of TCS, good biocompatibility, and antibacterial activity. By in vivo animal testing, we found that ColMA/CD-ic-TCS had a superior wound healing capacity, compared to the other hydrocolloids evaluated, due to synergistic interaction between ColMA and CD-ic-TCS. Together, our findings indicate that ColMA/CD-ic-TCS has a clinical potential as an antibacterial wound dressing.
