Iron oxide nanoparticles/nanocomposites derived from steel and iron wastes for water treatment: A review

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are characterized by superior magnetic properties, high surface area to volume ratio, and active surface functional groups. These properties aid in removal of pollutants from water, through adsorption and/or photocatalysis, justifying the choice of IONPs in water treatment systems. IONPs are usually developed from commercial chemicals of ferric and ferrous salts alongside other reagents, a procedure that is costly, environmentally unfriendly and limits their mass production. On the other hand, steel and iron industries produce both solid and liquid wastes which in most cases are piled, discharged into water streams or landfilled as strategies to dispose them off. Such practices are detrimental to environmental ecosystems. Given the high content of iron present in these wastes, they can be used to generate IONPs. This work reviewed published literature through selected key words on the deployment of steel and/or iron-based wastes as IONPs precursors for water treatment. The findings reveal that steel waste-derived IONPs have properties such as specific surface area, particle sizes, saturation magnetization, and surface functional groups that are comparable or sometimes better than those synthesized from commercial salts. Furthermore, the steel waste-derived IONPs have high removal efficacy for heavy metals and dyes from water with possibilities of being regenerated. The performance of steel waste-derived IONPs can be enhanced by functionalization with different reagents such as chitosan, graphene, and biomass based activated carbons. Nonetheless, there is need to explore the potential of steel waste-based IONPs in removing contaminants of emerging concern, modifying pollutant detection sensors, their techno-economic feasibility in large treatment plants, toxicity of these nanoparticles when ingested into the human body, among other areas.

Ex-situ magnetic activated carbon for the adsorption of three pharmaceuticals with distinct physicochemical properties from real wastewater

Pharmaceuticals are able to evade conventional wastewater treatments and therefore, are recurrently found in the environment with proven potential to cause harm to human and wildlife. Adsorption onto activated carbon (AC) is a promising complement. However, AC production from non-renewable resources and its difficult after-use recuperation are prohibitive. Hence, a waste-based magnetic activated carbon (MAC) was produced from paper mill sludge, via an ex-situ synthesis, for the adsorptive removal of carbamazepine (CBZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and ibuprofen (IBU) from ultrapure water and wastewater. The MAC was obtained through the promotion of electrostatic interactions between magnetic and activated carbon particles in a water suspension at controlled pH between the points of zero charge of both surfaces. The optimized condition (MACX3) presented remarkable properties regarding specific surface area (S_BET=795 m² g^-1) and saturation magnetization (M_S=19 emu g^-1). Kinetic and equilibrium adsorption studies were performed under batch conditions. Adsorption equilibrium was reached in up to 30 min for all pharmaceuticals in both matrices, proving the low dependence on the adsorbate and the broad applicability of MACX3 in pharmaceutical adsorption. Regarding equilibrium experiments, high Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities (q_m) were achieved in ultrapure water (up to 711 ± 40 µmol g^-1). Equilibrium studies in wastewater revealed a decay in q_m when compared to ultrapure water: 28% for CBZ (468 ± 20 µmol g^-1 (111 ± 5 mg g^-1)), 78% for SMX (145 ± 10 µmol g^-1 (37 ± 3 mg g^-1)) and 62% for IBU (273 ± 8 µmol g^-1 (56 ± 2 mg g^-1)), attributed to the wastewater pH, which dictates the speciation of the pharmaceuticals and controls electrostatic interactions between pharmaceuticals and MAC, and to competition effects by organic matter. It was demonstrated the promising applicability of a waste-based ex-situ MAC, rapidly retrievable from water, as an alternative tertiary wastewater treatment for pharmaceuticals removal.

Paracetamol and Ibuprofen Removal from Aqueous Phase Using a Ceramic-Derived Activated Carbon

Emerging pollutants, including pharmaceuticals and personal care products, have been detected in surface and groundwaters. The adsorption of paracetamol and ibuprofen, two widespread drugs, has been studied in aqueous medium, using a ceramic-derived carbon (CeDC) and a commercial activated carbon (CoAC). CeDC yielded a BET surface area of 895 m² g^-1, a bimodal pore size distribution (13.2 and 35 nm) and a total pore volume of 1.99 cm³ g^-1. CoAC had an approximate surface area of 1000 m² g^-1, a homogeneous pore size distribution and a total pore volume of 0.42 cm³ g^-1. Kinetic and equilibrium tests were carried out in batch systems to study the materials' sorption performances. The intraparticle diffusion model best fitted the experimental kinetic data. The maximum ibuprofen sorption capacities were 120 mg g^-1 and 133 mg g^-1 for CoAC and CeDC, respectively, whereas no major differences on the maximum paracetamol sorption capacities (qm) were observed among the sorbents (150-159 mg g^-1). Therefore, CeDC, synthesized easily from a ceramic composite, improved time and sorption capacity of paracetamol and ibuprofen compared to the commercial activated carbon, indicating the potential of the developed carbon as an emerging pollutant sorbent material.

Viscosity Deviation Modeling for Binary and Ternary Mixtures of Benzyl Alcohol-N-Hexanol-Water

Knowing the thermodynamic and transport properties of liquid systems is very important in engineering for the development of theoretical models and for the design of new technologies. Models that allow accurate predictions of thermodynamic and transport properties are needed in chemical engineering calculations involving fluid, heat, and mass transfer. In this study, the modeling of viscosity deviation for binary and ternary systems containing benzyl alcohol, n-hexanol, and water, less studied in the literature, was carried out using Redlich and Kister (R-L) models, multiple linear regression (MLR) models and artificial neural networks (ANN). The viscosity of the binary and ternary systems was experimentally determined at the following temperatures: 293.15, 303.15, 313.15, and 323.15 K. Viscosity deviation was calculated and then correlated with mole fractions, normalized temperature, and refractive index. The neural model that led to the best performance in the testing and validation stages contains 4 neurons in the input layer, 12 neurons in the hidden layer, and one neuron in the output layer. In the testing stage for this model, the standard deviation is 0.0067, and the correlation coefficient is 0.999. In the validation stage, a deviation of 0.0226 and a correlation coefficient of 0.996 were obtained. The MLR model led to worse results than those obtained with the neural model and also with the R-L models. The standard deviation for this model is 0.099, and the correlation coefficient is 0.898. Its advantage over the R-L type models is that the influence of both composition and temperature are included in a single equation.

Sustainable Mitigation of Paracetamol with a Novel Dual-Functionalized Pullulan/Kaolin Hydrogel Nanocomposite from Simulated Wastewater

In the present investigation, a novel, green, and economical dual-functionalized pullulan/kaolin hydrogel nanocomposite (f-PKHN) was fabricated and subsequently applied for the liquid-phase decontamination of paracetamol (PCT), a pharmaceutical pollutant. Pullulan and kaolin were functionalized with l-asparagine and gallic acid, respectively. The physicochemical facets of the functionalized pullulan/kaolin hydrogel nanocomposite and its interactive behavior with PCT were elucidated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), and elemental mapping. The process parameters along with the isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamics were methodically appraised via a batch technique to unveil the adsorption performance of the as-fabricated hydrogel nanocomposite. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics of PCT uptake by f-PKHN conform well to Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. Relying on hydrogen bonding, n-π, and van der Waals interactions, the maximum adsorption capacity was 332.54 mg g^-1, higher than for most of the previous adsorbents reported in the literature for PCT removal. Thermodynamic calculations corroborated endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible adsorption phenomena. The maintenance of a high uptake percentage (69.11%) in the fifth consecutive adsorption-desorption cycle implied the significant reusable potential of f-PKHN. Swelling studies exhibited 90% swelling within 200 min, indicating the successful fabrication of a cross-linked hydrogel network. The real water (distilled water, tap water, and river water) samples spiked with PCT specified a significant uptake of PCT (>85%), and the minor influence of ionic strength on the adsorptive potential of f-PKHN validated its potentiality for the decontamination of real effluents. In conclusion, f-PKHN with substantial adsorption capacity, green characteristics, and excellent reusability can be reckoned with as a promising adsorbent for the de-escalation of PCT from aquatic sources as well as at the industrial level.

A comparative study on adsorption behavior of iodinated X-ray contrast media iohexol and amidotrizoic acid by magnetic-activated carbon

As persistent and ubiquitous contaminants in water, iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) pose a non-negligible risk to the environment and human health. In this study, we investigated the adsorption behavior of two typical ICM compounds, iohexol (IOH) and amidotrizoic acid (DTZ), on magnetic activated carbon. Theoretical investigations, using density functional theory, identified the molecule structures and calculated the molecular diameters of IOH (1.68 nm) and DTZ (1.16 nm), which revealed that ICM could be adsorbed by mesopores and larger micropores. Therefore, magnetic activated carbon with a porous structure was prepared by the co-precipitation method to investigate the adsorption mechanism of IOH and DTZ. MAC--5 (magnetic activated carbon with a theoretical iron oxide content of 37%) showed the best adsorption ability for both IOH and DTZ, with maximum adsorption capacities of 86.05 and 43.00 mg g^-1, respectively. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm models were applied to explore the mechanisms involved, and the effects of solution pH, initial concentration, temperature, ionic strength, and natural organic matter were also investigated. The pore filling effect, π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction, were found to be the main adsorption mechanisms. The co-adsorption data showed that competition may occur in ICM coexisting environments. Interestingly, the used MAC--5 could be successfully regenerated and its adsorption efficiency did not decrease significantly after five cycles, indicating that it is a promising adsorbent for ICM. The results from this study provide some new insights for the treatment of water containing ICM.

Toxicological assessment and adsorptive removal of lead (Pb) and Congo red (CR) from water by synthesized iron oxide/activated carbon (Fe3O4/AC) nanocomposite

Heavy metals and dyes are the persistent pollutants causing harmful effects on living organisms in different ecosystems. In current study, removal of Lead (Pb) and Congo Red (CR) from water was performed using Iron oxide/Activated Carbon (Fe₃O₄/AC) nanocomposite. Ferromagnetic behavior of the nanocomposite is the crucial advantage in separation of nanocomposite after biosorption process. The biosorbent was thermally stable till 800 °C of temperature. The synthesized biosorbent was polycrystalline in nature comprising of elements like C, O, Fe. The influence of various experimental conditions was optimized through batch study with the biosorption capacity of 144.92 mg/g (Pb) and 122.22 mg/g (CR) at pH 5-6, Fe₃O₄/AC dosage (0.04 g) for 40 mg/L of Pb and CR. Toxicological assessment was performed using Danio rerio and seeds to evaluate the harmful effects of pollutants on these organisms. The phytotoxicity results revealed that growth inhibition of seeds lies between 85.64% and 55.92% (Pb) and 77.94%-51.85% (CR). The LC₅₀ value of Pb on the Danio rerio was found to be 20.98 mg/L. In contrast, we observed significant increase in LC₅₀ value about 86.82 mg/L after biosorption of Pb onto biosorbent.

Optimization of Sibipiruna activated carbon preparation by simplex-centroid mixture design for simultaneous adsorption of rhodamine B and metformin

The present paper reports the application of augmented simplex-centroid mixture design to obtain a high BET surface area activated carbon using as reactants KOH, K₂CO₃ and K₂C₂O₄. The optimum mixture composition was 2.51 g of KOH, 0.49 g of K₂CO₃ and absence of K₂C₂O₄, generating an optimized AC (AC_op) with S_BET value equals to 1984 m² g^-1. The results herein obtained show that low amounts of K₂CO₃ can catalyze the pore development in the presence of KOH, increasing the surface area. Furthermore, the fractal dimensions of AC_op are greater than 2.72, indicating the material has a complex pore structure with irregularities self-similar upon variations of resolution, as seen by SEM images. The TPD curves showed that the AC_op has different oxygenated molecular fragments, which agrees with the pH_PZC value (5.05). The AC_op was applied in the adsorption of rhodamine B (RhB) and metformin (Met) in both binary and monocomponent systems. The simultaneous adsorption at 30 °C reveals that the adsorption capacity of RhB is 630.94 mg g^-1, while for Met the value is 103.83 mg g^-1.

Removal of atrazine from aqueous solutions onto a magnetite/chitosan/activated carbon composite in a fixed-bed column system: optimization using response surface methodology

In this study, a magnetite/chitosan/activated carbon (MCHAC) composite is proposed as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of atrazine from aqueous solutions. The prepared composite was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. Response surface methodology (RSM) coupled with composite central design (CCD) were used to optimize the effects of the four independent variables, pH, initial concentration of atrazine (C 0), bed depth (H), and flow rate (Q), which influence the adsorption process. The experimental results modeled using response surface methodology (RSM) coupled with central composite design (CCD) (RSM-CCD) indicated a quadratic relationship with p < 0.0001 for adsorption capacity at saturation (q s) and fraction of bed utilization (FBU). The results of the experiments performed under the optimized conditions, pH = 5.07, C 0 = 137.86 mg L-1, H = 2.99 cm and Q = 1.038 mL min-1, showed a q s value of 62.32 mg g-1 and FBU of 72.26%, with a deviation value of less than 0.05 from the predicted q s and FBU values. The obtained breakthrough curves were fitted with four mathematical models, Thomas, Bohart-Adams, Yan and Yoon-Nelson, in order to determine the limiting step of the mass transfer of the atrazine adsorption onto the composite. A desorption study of the composite revealed the high reuse potential for MCHAC, thus, the prepared material could be used as a low-cost and efficient adsorbent for the decontamination of polluted wastewater.

Single-step pyrolysis for producing magnetic activated carbon from tucumã (Astrocaryum aculeatum) seed and nickel(II) chloride and zinc(II) chloride. Application for removal of nicotinamide and propanolol

The present research describes the synthesis of new nanomagnetic activated carbon material with high magnetization, and high surface area prepared in a single pyrolysis step that is used for the carbonization, activation, and magnetization of the produced material. The pyrolysis step of tucumã seed was carried out in a conventional tubular oven at 600 °C under N₂-flow. It was prepared three magnetic carbons MT-1.5, MT-2.0, MT-2.5, that corresponds to the proportion of biomass: ZnCl₂ always 1:1 and varying the proportion of NiCl₂ of 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5, respectively. These magnetic nanocomposites were characterized by Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance, CHN/O elemental analysis, modified Boehm titration, N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms; and pH_pzc. All the materials obtained presented Ni particles with an average crystallite size of less than 33 nm. The MT-2.0 was employed for the removal of nicotinamide and propranolol from aqueous solutions. Based on Liu isotherm, the Q_max was 199.3 and 335.4 mg g^-1 for nicotinamide and propranolol, respectively. MT-2.0 was used to treat simulated pharmaceutical industry effluents attaining removal of all organic compounds attaining up to 99.1 % of removal.
