Novel green surfactant made from L-aspartic acid as enhancer of oil production from sandstone reservoirs: Wettability, IFT, microfluidic, and core flooding assessments

Molecular Dynamics Computational Study of Sustainable Green Surfactant for Application in Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery

Green surfactant (GS) flooding, an environmentally friendly chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (cEOR) method, is explored in this molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study. This study evaluates the ability of (S)-2-dodecanamido-aminobutanedioic as a GS for cEOR, assessing its performance with hexane (C6), dodecane (C12), and eicosane (C20) as representative oils. In the case of the bulk system, a comprehensive molecular-level investigation provides structural details such as the radial distribution function, solvent-accessible surface area, GS adsorption dynamics, diffusivity, and emulsion stability of the GS, oil, and water systems. Also the impact of the three distinct oils on interfacial tension was examined in the existence of GS molecules. The findings reveal rapid GS molecule aggregation and adsorption on oil droplets, with various impacts on emulsion stability depending on the oil type. Additionally, GS enhances the aggregation of heavy C20 oil molecules in a water medium. The study demonstrates GS's role as an effective emulsifier, facilitating oil droplet recovery, with electrostatic interactions governing micelle formation and van der Waals interactions influencing oil droplet emulsification. These results align with prior experimental data, affirming GS's promising application potential in cEOR while prioritizing environmental sustainability.

Study on the Performance Mechanism of Polyformaldehyde Glycol Ether Polymer for Crude Oil Recovery Enhancement

The demand for energy continues to increase as the global economy continues to grow. The role of oilfield chemicals in the process of oil and gas exploration, development, and production is becoming more and more important, and the demand is rising year by year. The support of national policies and the formulation of environmental protection regulations have put forward higher requirements for oilfield chemical products, which has promoted the innovative research and development and market application of oilfield chemicals. Polyformaldehyde glycol ether polymer (PGEP) is simple to synthesize, easily biodegradable, green and environmentally friendly, and in line with the development trend of chemicals used in oil and gas development. The interfacial tension performance of PGEP after compounding with different surfactants can reach as low as 0.00034 mN/m, which meets the requirements of the oilfield (interfacial tension ≤ 5 × 10-3 mN/m). The best oil washing efficiency performance of PGEP compounded with different surfactants reached 78.2%, which meets the requirements of the oilfield (oil washing efficiency ≥ 40%). The fracturing fluid drainage efficiency of PGEP after compounding with different surfactants reaches 22%, which meets the requirements of the oilfield (drainage efficiency ≥ 15%). The surface interfacial tension of the system remains constant after the concentration exceeds 0.2% and decreases with lower concentrations. The drainage efficiency increases with increasing concentrations in the range below 0.6%. It was determined that PGEP can be used as a surfactant instead of fatty-alcohol ethoxylates (FAE) in oilfield development.

Evaluation of rock and fluid intermolecular interaction between asphaltene and sand minerals using electrochemical, analytical spectroscopy and microscopy techniques

Long-time contact of heavy crude oil with rock leads to an adsorption phenomenon, which causes the rock surface to become oil-wet and appears as a barrier to the fluid flow in the porous media. However precise understanding of how asphaltene fractions influence sand wettability is lacking. The wetness of neat and asphaltene-aged sandstone was calculated using two relative permeability and contact angle methods. Then the molecular interaction between asphaltene and sand minerals was systematically analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the zeta potential was representative of electrostatic properties and surface charge alteration of the sand after these phenomena. Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis also showed elemental mapping and dispersion of asphaltene particles on the rock surface. According to contact angle and EDX analyses of asphaltene samples, the contact angle rises from 115° to 141° by an increase in carbon adsorption on the sand surface from 8.23 to 41.56%. Spectroscopy results demonstrated that hydrogen-bonding, π-bonding, and sulfur-containing compounds such as sulfoxide improve asphaltene adsorption onto the sand surface. The higher the aromaticity index and hydrogen potential index of asphaltene, the greater the ability of asphaltene to change wettability. Adsorption of surface active components would make the surface charge of the sand more negative. The presence of nitrogen/sulfur-containing functional groups on the sand surface changed the electrostatic properties, as a sand surface coated with asphaltene would reduce the percentage of metal cations.

Ecofriendly Natural Surfactants in the Oil and Gas Industry: A Comprehensive Review

The use of different types of chemicals in upstream oilfield operations is critical for optimizing the different operations involved in hydrocarbon exploration and production. Surfactants are a type chemical that are applied in various upstream operations, such as drilling, fracturing, and enhanced oil recovery. However, due to their nonbiodegradability and toxicity, the use of synthetic surfactants has raised environmental concerns. Natural surfactants have emerged because of the hunt for sustainable and environmentally suitable substitutes. This Review discusses the role of natural surfactants in upstream operations as well as their benefits and drawbacks. The Review discusses the basic characteristics of surfactants, their classification, and the variables that affect their performance. Finally, the Review examines the possible applications of natural surfactants in the upstream oil sector and identifies areas that require further research.

Experimental Investigation on Spontaneous Imbibition of Surfactant Mixtures in Low Permeability Reservoirs

Spontaneous imbibition of surfactants could efficiently enhance oil recovery in low permeability sandstone reservoirs. The majority of studies have considered the application of individual surfactants to alter wettability and reduce interfacial tension (IFT). However, a significant synergistic effect has been reported between different types of surfactants and between salts and surfactants. Therefore, this study systematically studied the capability of a binary surfactant mixture (anionic/nonionic) and a ternary surfactant mixture (anionic/nonionic/strong base-weak acid salt) in imbibition enhanced oil recovery (IEOR). The interfacial properties and the cores' wettability were explored by IFT and contact angle measurements, respectively. Subsequently, the imbibition performances of different types of surfactant solutions were discussed. The results suggested that the surfactants' potential to enhance oil recovery followed the order of ternary surfactant mixture > binary surfactant mixture > anionic > nonionic > amphoteric > polymer. The ternary surfactant mixture exhibited strong capacity to reverse the rock surface from oil-wet (125°) to strongly water-wet (3°), which was more significant than both binary surfactant mixtures and individual surfactants. In addition, the ternary surfactant mixture led to an ultralow IFT value of 0.0015 mN/m, achieving the highest imbibition efficiency (45% OOIP). This research puts forward some new ideas on the application of the synergistic effects of surfactants in IEOR from low-permeability sandstone reservoirs.

A critical review of the development and demulsification processes applied for oil recovery from oil in water emulsions

The formation of stable emulsions is a fundamental problem in oil industry that can result in a sequence of environmental and operational problems. Chemical demulsification is extensively applied for the recovery of oil from water as well as water from oil. This review introduces different chemical demulsifiers applied for the demulsification and recovery of oil from oil in water (O/W) emulsions. Main types of surfactants (anionic, cationic, nonionics and amphoteric) involved in the formation of emulsions and enhances their stability were discussed. Promising demulsifiers such as nanoparticle (NP), hyperbranched polymers, and ionic liquids (IL), which achieved high oil recovery rate, parameters influencing demulsification efficiency and demulsification mechanisms were explored. Lastly, improvements, challenges, and new changes being made to chemical demulsifiers were underlined. Functionalized magnetic nanoparticles and hyperbranched polymers were very effective in recovering oil from O/W emulsions with an efficiency >95%. Polymers with highly hydrophilic content and high molecular weight can achieve excellent oil recovery rates due to higher interfacial activity, higher dispersion, and presence of specific functional groups. Although ionic liquids could achieve oil recovery up to 90%, high cost limits their applications. NPs showed excellent oil recovery behavior at low concentrations and ambient temperature. Demulsification efficiency of NPs can be enhanced by functionalize with other components (e.g., polymers and surfactants), while service life can be extend by silica coating. Future challenges include scaling up the use of NPs in oil recovery process and highlighting contrasts between lab-scale and field-scale applications.

Pore wettability for enhanced oil recovery, contaminant adsorption and oil/water separation: A review

Wettability, a fundamental property of porous surface, occupies a pivotal position in the fields of enhanced oil recovery, organic contaminant adsorption and oil/water separation. In this review, wettability and the related applications are systematically expounded from the perspectives of hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity and super-wettability. Four common measurement methods are generalized and categorized into contact angle method and ratio method, and influencing factors (temperature, the type and layer charge of matrix, the species and structure of modifier) as well as their corresponding altering methods (inorganic, organic and thermal modification etc.) of wettability are overviewed. Different roles of wettability alteration in enhanced oil recovery, organic contaminant adsorption as well as oil/water separation are summarized. Among these applications, firstly, the hydrophilic alteration plays a key role in recovery of the oil production process; secondly, hydrophobic circumstance of surface drives the organic pollutant adsorption more effectually; finally, super-wetting property of matrix ensures the high-efficient separation of oil from water. This review also identifies importance, challenges and future prospects of wettability alteration, and as a result, furnishes the essential guidance for selection and design inspiration of the wettability modification, and supports the further development of pore wettability application.
