8-Hydroxyquinoline based push-pull azo dye: Novel colorimetric chemosensor for anion detection

Oxadiazole Schiff Base as Fe3+ Ion Chemosensor: "Turn-off" Fluorescent, Biological and Computational Studies

Compound, (E)-5-(4-((thiophen-2-ylmethylene)amino)phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol (3) was synthesized via condensation reaction of 5-(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol with thiophene-2-carbaldehyde in ethanol. For the synthesis and structural confirmation the FT-IR, ¹H, ¹³C-NMR, UV-visible spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry were carried out. The long-term stability of the probe (3) was validated by the experimental as well as theoretical studies. The sensing behaviour of the compound 3 was monitored with various metal ions (Ca²⁺, Cr³⁺, Fe³⁺, Co²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, Ni²⁺, K⁺) using UV- Vis. and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques by various methods (effect of pH and density functional theory) which showing the most potent sensing behaviour with iron. Job's plot analysis confirmed the binding stoichiometry ratio 1:1 of Fe³⁺ ion and compound 3. The limit of detection (LOD), the limit of quantification (LOQ), and association constant (K_a) were calculated as 0.113 µM, 0.375 µM, and 5.226 × 10⁵ respectively. The sensing behavior was further confirmed through spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR and ¹H-NMR) and DFT calculations. The intercalative mode of binding of oxadiazole derivative 3 with Ct-DNA was supported through UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, viscosity, cyclic voltammetry, and circular dichroism measurements. The binding constant, Gibb's free energy, and stern-volmer constant were find out as 1.24 × 10⁵, -29.057 kJ/mol, and 1.82 × 10⁵ respectively. The cleavage activity of pBR322 plasmid DNA was also observed at 3 × 10^-5 M concentration of compound 3. The computational binding score through molecular docking study was obtained as -7.4 kcal/mol. Additionally, the antifungal activity for compound 3 was also screened using broth dilution and disc diffusion method against C. albicans strain. The synthesized compound 3 showed good potential scavenging antioxidant activity against DPPH and H₂O₂ free radicals.

Influence of methyl group in a quinoline moiety on optical and light-induced properties of side-chain azo-polymers

We present the optical and photochromic properties as well as surface quality of thin films of the methacrylic copolymers containing 2-methylquinoline and quinoline azo-dyes in side chain. The extinction coefficient and refractive index were determined using spectroscopic ellipsometry combined with transmittance measurements. Photo-responsive behavior was investigated by determination of trans–cis photoisomerization rates under irradiation with unpolarized 365 nm light. We found that optical properties as well as photoisomerization rates of investigated polymers are dependent on the presence of a methyl substituent in the 2nd position of the quinoline moiety. The quality of the thin films was examined using Atomic Force Microscopy measurements.

Preparation, crystal structures, properties, and time-dependent density functional theory of two cobalt complexes with 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-quinoline-4-carboxylate

One organic compound [HMCA]2 (1) and two novel cobalt complexes [Co(MCA)(bipy)(H2O)]·(H2O) (2), [Co2(MCA)2(Phen)3]·3(H2O) (3) are synthesized by a solvothermal approach and are structurally determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 exhibits a two-dimensional structure by hydrogen bond and π. . .π stacking interaction. The complexes exhibit a three-dimensional and one-dimensional metal-organic framework. Solid-state photoluminescence spectrums reveal that they show blue emission bands at 449 nm, and theoretical calculation results of time-dependent density functional theory show that all belong to ligand-to-ligand charge transfer. Solid-state diffuse reflectance spectrums reveal the presence of a narrow optical band gap of 1.72 and 1.60 eV in the complexes 2 and 3, respectively.

8-Hydroxyquinoline Fluorophore for Sensing of Metal Ions and Anions

Among various known hydroxyquinolines, 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) is the most prevalent moiety due to excellent property for the formation of the complex with different metal ions and anions, and utilized in a wide variety of applications in pharmacological and medicinal fields. 8-Hydroxyquinoline moiety and its analogues acts as fluorophoric ligands on complex formation with alkali and alkaline as well as transition metal ions and anions, thus, considered as an ideal building block in metallo-supramolecular chemistry for recognition, separation, and quantitative investigation of cations. 8-Hydroxyquinoline moiety is also used in various applications for the advancement of novel fluorescent chemosensors in a wide variety of areas viz., material chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, molecular imaging, analytical chemistry, molecular recognition, medical and biological science communities. The present review emphasises on the progress of sensing properties of 8-HQ centred small-molecule fluorescent chemosensors towards several metal ions viz., Fe³⁺ , Al³⁺ , Ag⁺ , Hg²⁺ , Cu²⁺ , Pd²⁺ , Zn²⁺ , Cr³⁺ , Cd²⁺ , Mn²⁺ , Ca²⁺ , and K⁺ and anions such as F^- , CN^- and PPi, from 2008 to 2020, because of their sensitivity and selectivity in terms of diverse colour changes for different species. This critical and comprehensive review might facilitate the improvement of more prevailing chemosensors for future exciting and broad applications.

Physico-Chemical and Light-Induced Properties of Quinoline Azo-dyes Polymers

We present investigation of optical and photochromic properties as well as of surface quality of thin films of novel methacrylic polymers with 8-hydroxyquinoline azo-dyes in side-chain. Additionally, thermal stability of polymer powders was examined and their glass transition temperature was determined. Optical properties (extinction coefficient and refractive index) were determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) combined with absorbance measurements. Photoresponsive behavior was investigated by determination of photoisomerization rates under irradiation with unpolarized 365 nm light, as well as by conduction of holographic grating inscription experiment. Thin film quality was determined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. Thermal analysis was performed by thermogravimetric (TG), derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. We found that optical properties as well as photoisomerization rates of investigated polymers are dependent on the substituent in the para position of the phenyl ring. Surface relief grating inscription was successfully generated only for materials with chromophores containing dimethylamino (N(CH₃)₂) and methyl (CH₃) substituents, but all materials exhibited birefringence grating in the bulk. Surface of most thin films was very smooth, but its quality was impaired by neutral (H) as well as carboxyl (COOH) substituent. Thermal stability of copolymers with side-chain chromophores was improved compared to pure poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).

Simultaneous measurement of hydrogen carbonate and acetate anions using biologically active receptor based on azo derivatives of naphthalene

A novel receptor based on azo-derivatives of 1-naphthylamine (2-((E)-((4-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)imino)methyl)-4-((E)-naphthalene-1-yldiazenyl)phenol(2) abbreviated CTNP was successfully designed and synthesized. Its sensing properties were studied deeply. Systematic studies of CTNP with HCO₃^- and AcO^- anions in DMSO disclosed that there is hydrogen-bonding between CTNP and incoming anions. Significant changes in the visible region of the spectrum, as well as a drastic color change of CTNP from pale yellow to red, observed due to interaction as mentioned earlier. The stoichiometry of [CTNP: HCO₃^- or AcO^-] complexes and association constants determined through Job's method and Benesi-Hildebrand (B-H) plot, respectively. Taking into account the analysis results, CTNP performs the selective recognition of sub-millimolar concentrations of HCO₃^- and AcO^- efficiently. The antifungal activity of the receptor was tested against Aspergillus brasiliensis and Aspergillus niger. CTNP exhibited excellent antifungal activity against both strains. CTNP also represented antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus epidermidis. It was cleared that designed receptor can be applied under physiological conditions for a long duration.

UV-vis spectral property of a multi-hydroxyl Schiff-base derivative and its colorimetric response to some special metal ions

A multi-hydroxyl Schiff-base derivative, N-2'-hydroxyl-1'-naphthyl methylene-2-amino phenol (HNMAP), was synthesized and characterized by FTIR, ¹H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. It was noted to find there was great effect for solvent and pH on the UV-vis spectroscopy of HNMAP. Especially, some metal ions could make its UV-vis spectra changed regularly with different time-resolved effects. For example, a real-time and multi-wavelength response to Fe²⁺ at 520 nm, 466 nm and 447 nm and a quite slow one about 26 min to Fe³⁺ at 447 nm and 466 nm, respectively. Under the optimized conditions, the changes in the corresponding absorption intensities at above wavelengths were in proportion to c_Fe²⁺ or c_Fe³⁺ during respectively partitioned linear ranges, which realized to quantitatively detect Fe²⁺ or Fe³⁺ with a large linear range more than two orders of magnitude. A 1:1 complex mode for HNMAP-Fe²⁺ and 1:2 for HNMAP-Fe³⁺ were proposed from UV-vis spectral titration and Job's plot. HNMAP would be a potential sensor for colorimetric detection of Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ in practice.
