Preparation and characteristics of Eu(DBM)3phen: Synthesis, single-crystal structure and spectroscopic analysis

Optimizing white light emission in Dy(iii) complexes: impact of energy transfer from mono and bidentate ligands on luminescence

Complexes of dysprosium(iii) ions with 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione featuring various mono and bi-dentate neutral ligands have been prepared and thoroughly investigated. The synthesized complexes exhibit an octa-coordinated environment, achieved by stoichiometrically combining organic ligands and Dy(iii) ions. This octa-coordination environment of Dy(iii) ion was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis. Near-white light (NWL) is emitted when complexes were exposed to UV radiation, indicating a significant flow of energy from the sensitizing moieties towards the Dy(iii) ion. This NWL emission might have resulted due to a balance between the intensities corresponding to emission peaks at 480 nm (blue) and 575 nm (yellow) in Dy1-Dy3. Emission spectra recorded at different excitation wavelength were utilized to study the tunability of CIE color coordinates. In addition to their high thermal stability, the complexes display bipolar paramagnetic shifts in their NMR spectra. The 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 transition, contributing ∼62% of the total emission, stands out as a promising candidate for laser amplification due to its dominance in the emission spectra. Additionally, NWL emission observed in a solid Dy(iii) complex opens intriguing possibilities for its application in next-generation white-light emitting devices.

UV-barrier poly(lactic acid) film with light-stabilized Eu complexes as filler

The poor UV shielding property of PLA limit it further applications on food packaging. The rare-earth complex Eu(DBM)3phen converts absorbed ultraviolet (UV) light to red light, which inspires the development of new UV shielding materials. However, this complex has low photostability and decomposes easily under UV irradiation. Thus, we prepared a long-lasting rare-earth complex transluminant Eu(DBM)2(BP-2)phen by introducing BP-2 into Eu(DBM)3phen, and blended it with PLA to obtain PLA/Eu(DBM)2(BP-2)phen composite films. The test results showed that the complex could reduce the UV transmittance of PLA films by emitting luminescence and heat. The UV transmittance of the composite film with 0.5 % mass fraction decreased from 87.4 % to 7.7 %, compared to pure PLA films, and remained at 11.6 % after 12 days of UV aging. The film had long-lasting UV shielding performance, good transparency and mechanical properties. Finally, In the storage experiments of flaxseed oil, the P/E25 film effectively retarded the oxidation process of the oil.

In Vitro and In Vivo Biological Activities of Dipicolinate Oxovanadium(IV) Complexes

The work is focused on anticancer properties of dipicolinate (dipic)-based vanadium(IV) complexes [VO(dipic)(N^∩N)] bearing different diimines (2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)pyridine, 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole, 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione, 1,10-phenanthroline, and 2,2'-bipyridine), as well as differently 4,7-substituted 1,10-phenanthrolines. The antiproliferative effect of V(IV) systems was analyzed in different tumors (A2780, HCT116, and HCT116-DoxR) and normal (primary human dermal fibroblasts) cell lines, revealing a high cytotoxic effect of [VO(dipic)(N^∩N)] with 4,7-dimethoxy-phen (5), 4,7-diphenyl-phen (6), and 1,10-phenanthroline (8) against HCT116-DoxR cells. The cytotoxicity differences between these complexes can be correlated with their different internalization by HCT116-DoxR cells. Worthy of note, these three complexes were found to (i) induce cell death through apoptosis and autophagy pathways, namely, through ROS production; (ii) not to be cytostatic; (iii) to interact with the BSA protein; (iv) do not promote tumor cell migration or a pro-angiogenic capability; (v) show a slight in vivo anti-angiogenic capability, and (vi) do not show in vivo toxicity in a chicken embryo.

Photoexcitation of Ge9- Clusters in THF: New Insights into the Ultrafast Relaxation Dynamics and the Influence of the Cation

We present a comprehensive femtosecond (fs) transient absorption study of the [Ge₉(Hyp)₃]⁻ (Hyp = Si(SiMe₃)₃) cluster solvated in tetrahydrofuran (THF) with special emphasis on intra- and intermolecular charge transfer mechanisms which can be tuned by exchange of the counterion and by dimerization of the cluster. The examination of the visible and the near infrared (NIR) spectral range reveals four different processes of cluster dynamics after UV (267/258 nm) photoexcitation related to charge transfer to solvent and localized excited states in the cluster. The resulting transient absorption is mainly observed in the NIR region. In the UV-Vis range transient absorption of the (neutral) cluster core with similar dynamics can be observed. By transferring concepts of: (i) charge transfer to the solvent known from solvated Na⁻ in THF and (ii) charge transfer in bulk-like materials on metalloid cluster systems containing [Ge₉(Hyp)₃]⁻ moieties, we can nicely interpret the experimental findings for the different compounds. The first process occurs on a fs timescale and is attributed to localization of the excited electron in the quasi-conduction band/excited state which competes with a charge transfer to the solvent. The latter leads to an excess electron initially located in the vicinity of the parent cluster within the same solvent shell. In a second step, it can recombine with the cluster core with time constants in the picosecond (ps) timescale. Some electrons can escape the influence of the cluster leading to a solvated electron or after interaction with a cation to a contact pair both with lifetimes exceeding our experimentally accessible time window of 1 nanosecond (ns). An additional time constant on a tens of ps timescale is pronounced in the UV-Vis range which can be attributed to the recombination rate of the excited state or quasi conduction band of Ge₉⁻. In the dimer, the excess electron cannot escape the molecule due to strong trapping by the Zn cation that links the two cluster cores.

Syntheses, crystal structure and photophysical properties of [Sm(dbm)3(impy)] and [Tb(dbm)3(impy)] and their hybrid films

This paper reports the syntheses, crystal structure and photophysical properties of eight-coordinate complexes [Sm(dbm)₃(impy)] and [Tb(dbm)₃(impy)] (dbm is the anion of 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione and impy is 2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)pyridine).

Phenanthroline-A Versatile Ligand for Advanced Functional Polymeric Materials

The controlled incorporation of phenanthroline moieties into polymers is introduced, demonstrating their application as metal-ion complexing ligands for the construction of advanced macromolecular structures. Specifically, two phenanthroline-containing monomers based on acrylate and styrene functionalities, were synthesized. Each monomer was readily copolymerized with either N,N-dimethylacrylamide or styrene via nitroxide-mediated polymerization, resulting in narrowly distributed polar or non-polar copolymers. To demonstrate the versatility of the established polymer systems, the polar polymer was employed for transition metal induced single-chain nanoparticle formation, verified by diffusion-ordered NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Furthermore, the non-polar polymer allows facile incorporation of lanthanide ions, creating luminescent metallo-polymers, in-depth characterized by advanced photophysical experiments and 2D NMR measurements.
