Abstract
Carbohydrates are a class of macromolecules that has significant potential across several domains, including the organisation of genetic material, provision of structural support, and facilitation of defence mechanisms against invasion. Their molecular diversity enables a vast array of essential functions, such as energy storage, immunological signalling, and the modification of food texture and consistency. Due to their rheological characteristics, solubility, sweetness, hygroscopicity, ability to prevent crystallization, flavour encapsulation, and coating capabilities, carbohydrates are useful in food products. Carbohydrates hold potential for the future of therapeutic development due to their important role in sustained drug release, drug targeting, immune antigens, and adjuvants. Bio-based packaging provides an emerging phase of materials that offer biodegradability and biocompatibility, serving as a substitute for traditional non-biodegradable polymers used as coatings on paper. Blending polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) with carbohydrate biopolymers, such as starch, cellulose, polylactic acid, etc., reduces the undesirable qualities of PHA, such as crystallinity and brittleness, and enhances the PHA's properties in addition to minimizing manufacturing costs. Carbohydrate-based biopolymeric nanoparticles are a viable and cost-effective way to boost agricultural yields, which is crucial for the increasing global population. The use of biopolymeric nanoparticles derived from carbohydrates is a potential and economically viable approach to enhance the quality and quantity of agricultural harvests, which is of utmost importance given the developing global population. The carbohydrate biopolymers may play in plant protection against pathogenic fungi by inhibiting spore germination and mycelial growth, may act as effective elicitors inducing the plant immune system to cope with pathogens. Furthermore, they can be utilised as carriers in controlled-release formulations of agrochemicals or other active ingredients, offering an alternative approach to conventional fungicides. It is expected that this review provides an extensive summary of the application of carbohydrates in the realms of food, pharmaceuticals, and environment.

Carboxymethyl chitosan-based electrospun nanofibers with high citral-loading for potential anti-infection wound dressings. Int J Biol Macromol 2022; 209:344-355. [PMID: 35413309 DOI: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2022.04.025] [Citation(s) in RCA: 20] [Impact Index Per Article: 10.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/11/2021] [Revised: 03/31/2022] [Accepted: 04/04/2022] [Indexed: 11/21/2022]
Abstract
As a natural antibacterial agent with pleasant fragrance, citral possesses low aqueous solubility. To improve citral loading in hydrophilic nanofiber, Pickering emulsion electrospinning strategy was proposed for anti-infection dressing development. The in-situ aggerated β-cyclodextrin-citral inclusion complex particles (βCPs) were used as emulsion stabilizers, while citral and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixed solutions were used as the inner "dispersed oil phase" and outer "continuous water phase", respectively. The results of electronic microscope investigation shown βCPs possessed regular cube appearances with a size of 5.5 ± 2.2 μm, which might improve the emulsion storage stability based on visual investigation. Moreover, randomly oriented and bead-on-string nanofibers with βCPs uniformly distributed could be obtained under optimized compositions and electrospinning parameters. Despite volatilization during electrospinning, nanofibers with high citral loading possessed good antibacterial performance against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In vitro hemolysis test indicated that nanofibers were hemocompatible. In addition, both fiber matrix and citral could promote the proliferation of mouse fibroblast cells. And the permeability of the fibers was adjustable. Thus, CMCS/PVA/βCPs/citral nanofibers could potentially protect wound from infection. In summary, CMCS/PVA/βCPs/citral nanofibers seemed to be promising alternatives to conventional wound dressings.

Abstract
Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), a soil fumigant, is an effective, broad-spectrum compound that often replaces bromomethane (MB) in the prevention and treatment of soil-borne diseases. However, the disadvantages of DMDS include toxicity, volatility, pungent odor, risk of human exposure, and environmental pollution. Cyclodextrin (CD) has been widely used as a carrier of chemicals in many industries due to its functional advantages and safety. In this study, a DMDS-controlled release formulation was developed by encapsulating DMDS in the cavity of 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD). This formulation reduced DMDS usage and production costs. Orthogonal experimental design, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Thermal gravity analysis (TGA) characterization, efficacy comparison, safety, and other aspects of the evaluation showed that under the best preparation conditions, the encapsulation rate was 81.49%. The efficacy of DMDS@HP-β-CD was similar to unformulated DMDS. The efficacy duration of the formulation was about two times longer than DMDS, and it was safer to use. This study reveals a cyclodextrin-DMDS formulation with reduced toxicity, longer duration, environmental safety and sustainability.

Abstract
AbstractNumerous biologically active acids can be transformed into an ionic form in a facile way and combined with appropriate quaternary ammonium cation to improve their application properties or biological activity. This study describes the synthesis of new quaternary ammonium salts with anions of gibberellic acid, a common plant growth regulator from the gibberellin group, or l-tryptophan, an important precursor of auxin biosynthesis. The surface-active tetrapentylammonium ion and natural substances such as acetylcholine, choline, and quinine were the sources of cations. Novel salts of gibberellic acid and l-tryptophan were obtained with high yields exceeding 97% as a result of the metathesis reaction or the neutralization of quaternary ammonium hydroxides. Phase transition temperatures, thermal and chemical stability, and solubility in solvents with different polarities were determined for all obtained salts. On the basis of studies regarding the influence of synthesized salts on the post-harvest longevity and quality of leaves of Convallaria majalis, it was established that the biological activity of the natural plant regulators in most cases was maintained. Therefore, it can be concluded that the conversion of the active substance into the form of a quaternary ammonium salt results in obtaining novel forms of plant growth regulators with favourable physicochemical properties while maintaining the efficacy of the biological active ingredients.

Predicting Value of Binding Constants of Organic Ligands to Beta-Cyclodextrin: Application of MARSplines and Descriptors Encoded in SMILES String. Symmetry (Basel) 2019. Abstract
The quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSPR) model was formulated to quantify values of the binding constant (lnK) of a series of ligands to beta–cyclodextrin (β-CD). For this purpose, the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARSplines) methodology was adopted with molecular descriptors derived from the simplified molecular input line entry specification (SMILES) strings. This approach allows discovery of regression equations consisting of new non-linear components (basis functions) being combinations of molecular descriptors. The model was subjected to the standard internal and external validation procedures, which indicated its high predictive power. The appearance of polarity-related descriptors, such as XlogP, confirms the hydrophobic nature of the cyclodextrin cavity. The model can be used for predicting the affinity of new ligands to β-CD. However, a non-standard application was also proposed for classification into Biopharmaceutical Classification System (BCS) drug types. It was found that a single parameter, which is the estimated value of lnK, is sufficient to distinguish highly permeable drugs (BCS class I and II) from low permeable ones (BCS class II and IV). In general, it was found that drugs of the former group exhibit higher affinity to β-CD then the latter group (class III and IV).

Abstract
Nanocarrier systems for the encapsulation of agrochemicals can contribute to sustainable agriculture, but few nanosystems have been developed for plant growth regulators (PGRs). The present study evaluated the effects of seed priming using alginate/chitosan (nanoALG/CS) and chitosan/tripolyphosphate (nanoCS/TPP) containing GA3 on the growth and productivity of Solanum lycopersicum cultivated under field conditions. The results demonstrated that nanocarrier systems could improve fruit production, with the productivity increasing almost 4-fold using nanoALG/CS-GA3. This pioneering study demonstrates the potential of nanocarrier systems with PGRs for applications in agriculture.
