Abstract
INTRODUCTION Inter-individual variability may contribute to impaired cervicocephalic kinesthetic sensibility (CKS) in patients with nonspecific neck pain. OBJECTIVES To identify subgroups of participants with nonspecific neck pain based on cervical joint position errors (JPEs) and to determine potential factors associated with identified subgroups. METHODS One hundred participants with nonspecific neck pain (unidentified pathoanatomical cause) and 50 controls were recruited. JPEs were measured in cervical extension and rotation, using a laser pointer. JPEs were expressed as absolute (AEs), constant (CEs), and variable (VEs) errors. Clinical characteristics were pain intensity, duration, disability, side of pain, dizziness, psychological features, and range of motion. All tests were performed within 1 day. A cluster analysis was conducted based on AEs. A logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with the cluster groups. RESULTS Analysis divided neck pain participants into two groups: cluster 1 with greater impaired CKS (n = 36) and cluster 2 with lesser impaired CKS (n = 64). The AEs (all cervical movements) and CE (left rotation) were larger in cluster 1 than 2 (p ≤ .002). Overall, participants in clusters 1 and 2 had larger AEs, CEs, and VEs than controls (p ≤ .04). The presence of dizziness was a risk factor associated with cluster 1 (OR=2.5, p = .04). The other characteristics were not associated with the cluster groups (p ≥ .09). CONCLUSION The AEs identified two subgroups of patients with nonspecific neck pain. Participants in subgroup 1 had greater impaired CKS, and participants in subgroup 2 had lesser impaired CKS. Dizziness was a potential risk factor associated with greater impaired CKS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Controversy exists with the presence of alterations in descending pain inhibition mechanisms in patients with non-specific neck pain (NSNP). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the status of conditioned pain modulation CPM, remote pressure pain thresholds (PPT), and psychological factors in a specific subgroup of patients with NSNP such as young adult students. In addition, possible associations between CPM, psychological factors, and pain characteristics were analyzed. METHODS Thirty students with recurrent or chronic NSNP and 30 pain-free students were included in this cross-sectional study. The following measures were assessed: CPM, remote PPT, psychological factors (depression, anxiety, pain catastrophizing, and kinesiophobia), pain characteristics (duration, intensity, severity of chronic pain, interference with daily life), and central sensitization inventory (CSI). RESULTS No significant differences were found in the efficacy of CPM between students with chronic or recurrent NSNP and pain-free students (β coefficient = -0.67; 95% CI = -1.54, 0.20). However, students with pain showed a significantly higher remote PPT (mean difference = -1.94; 95% CI = -2.71, -1.18). and a greater presence of anxious (mean difference = 6; 95% CI = 2, 9) and depressive symptoms (mean difference = 8.57; 95% CI = 3.97, 13.16). In addition, significant moderate or strong correlations were found between CPM and pain intensity (partial r = 0.41), pain catastrophizing and mean pain intensity (r = 0.37), grade (r = 0.50), and interference of pain (r = 0.57), kinesiophobia and disability (r = 0.38), and depression and CSI (r = 0.39). CONCLUSIONS Young adult students with chronic or recurrent NSNP present remote hyperalgesia and symptoms of depression and anxiety but not dysfunctional CPM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interventions based on pain neuroscience education and exercise have emerged as effective in the management of chronic neck pain in adolescents. No studies have explored factors that might be associated with recovery in adolescents with neck pain. OBJECTIVE To explore predictors of improvement after an intervention based on exercise and pain neuroscience education. DESIGN Secondary analysis of a randomized trial. SETTING Community. PARTICIPANTS 127 community adolescents with neck pain. INTERVENTIONS Blended-learning intervention based on exercise and pain neuroscience education. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES A set of variables including sociodemographic data, pain characteristics, physical activity, disability, sleep, catastrophizing, fear of movement, self-efficacy, symptoms of central sensitization, knowledge of pain neuroscience, pressure pain thresholds, and neck muscles endurance were used to predict a clinical response at 1 week after intervention and at 6-month follow-up. RESULTS Different predictors of improvement and non-improvement to intervention were found, but common predictors were not found for all the improvement criteria explored and time points. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that using different criteria to characterize adolescents with neck pain as improved and non-improved after pain neuroscience education and exercise have an effect on the variables associated with a response to the intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Action observation (AO) has emerged as a potential neurorehabilitation therapy for patients with neck pain (NP), but evidence of its effectiveness is scarce. This study aims to assess the effect of a single session of AO when compared to observing a natural landscape on NP intensity, fear of movement, fear-avoidance beliefs, neck muscles' strength, pressure pain threshold, and tactile acuity. METHODS Sixty participants with NP were randomly allocated to the AO group (n = 30) or control group (n = 30). Both groups watched an 11-minute video: the AO group watched a video of a person matched for age and sex performing neck exercises, while the control group watched a video of natural landscapes. Neck pain intensity, fear of movement, fear-avoidance beliefs, tactile acuity, pressure pain thresholds, and neck muscle strength were assessed both at baseline and post-intervention. General linear models of repeated measures (ANCOVA of two factors) were used to explore between-group differences at post-intervention. RESULTS There was a significant main effect of time for pain intensity (p = 0.02; η2p = 0.09; within-group mean change and 95% CI: AO=-1.44 (-2.28, -0.59); control=-1.90 (-2.74, -1.06), but no time versus group interaction (p = 0.46). A time versus group significant interaction was found for one out of the six measurement sites of two-point discrimination and the neck flexors strength (p < 0.05) favoring the control group. No other statistically significant differences were found for the remaining variables). CONCLUSIONS Results suggest a similar acute benefit for both a single session of AO and observing natural landscapes for promoting hypoalgesia, but no impact on kinesiophobia, fear-avoidance beliefs, or pressure pain thresholds. Also, AO had no positive effect on two-point discrimination and muscle strength. Further research is needed, with longer interventions. TRIAL REGISTRATION Clinialtrials.gov (NCT05078489).

Abstract
PURPOSE To translate and cross-culturally adapt the English version of the Central Sensitisation Inventory (CSI) into Thai (CSI-Thai) and to evaluate its psychometric properties in individuals with chronic non-specific neck pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cross-cultural translation and adaptation of the CSI were performed according to standard guidelines. A total of 340 participants were invited to complete the CSI-Thai, Visual Analogue Scale (pain intensity), Neck Disability Index, Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire, Pain Catastrophising Scale (PCS), and Short Form-36. Psychometric evaluation included confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, agreement, and construct validity. RESULTS Dimensionality analyses indicated that a bifactor model, comprising one general factor plus four orthogonal factors, fit the CSI structure better than unidimensional and the four-factor models. The general factor showed substantial reliability (Cronbach α = 0.91, Omega ω = 0.94, and omega hierarchical ω-h = 0.91). The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.90, representing excellent stability over a 48 h interval. Moderate-to-strong correlations and acceptable-to-excellent discriminations were found between the CSI-Thai and all questionnaires. The exception was the PCS (no correlation and discrimination). The standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change of the CSI-Thai were 2.33 and 6.47, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the CSI-Thai were successful, with satisfactory reliability and construct validity.Implications for rehabilitationCentral Sensitisation Inventory-Thai version (CSI-Thai) is successfully adapted and demonstrated satisfactory reliability and construct validity.The CSI-Thai can be applicable to assess central sensitisation-related signs and symptoms in Thai-speaking patients with chronic non-specific neck pain (CNSNP) both clinical and research purposes.The CSI-Thai correlated to pain, disability and quality of life among patients with CNSNP.

Abstract
Chronic subjective tinnitus is a prevalent symptom, which has many similarities with chronic pain. Central sensitization is considered as a possible underlying mechanism of both symptoms. Central sensitization has already been investigated in chronic pain populations but not in patients with chronic subjective tinnitus. Therefore, the main objective of this cross-sectional study was to compare signs and symptoms, indicative for central sensitization, in tinnitus patients with and without chronic idiopathic neck pain, patients with chronic idiopathic neck pain only, and healthy controls. Also, differences in psychological and lifestyle factors, possibly influencing the association between central sensitization and tinnitus, were examined as well as correlations between signs and symptoms of central sensitization, and tinnitus, pain, psychological and lifestyle factors. Differences in signs and symptoms of central sensitization were examined using the self-report Central Sensitization Inventory and QST protocol (local and distant mechanical and heat hyperalgesia, conditioned pain modulation). Tinnitus, pain, psychological and lifestyle factors were evaluated using self-report questionnaires. Symptoms of central sensitization and local mechanical hyperalgesia were significantly more present in both tinnitus groups, compared to healthy controls, but were most extensive in the group with chronic tinnitus+chronic idiopathic neck pain. Distant mechanical hyperalgesia, indicative for central sensitization, was only observed in the group with both chronic tinnitus+chronic idiopathic neck pain. This group also displayed a significantly higher psychological burden and poorer sleep than patients with chronic tinnitus only and healthy controls. Signs and symptoms of central sensitization were also shown to be associated with tinnitus impact, pain-related disability, psychological burden and sleep disturbances. This study shows preliminary evidence for the presence of central sensitization in patients with chronic tinnitus+chronic idiopathic neck pain. This could be explained by the higher perceived tinnitus impact, psychological burden and sleep problems in this group. Abstract
Objective Pain sensitivity decreases following isometric exercise. It is not clear whether this exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH) occurs to the same extent in men and women. It is also unclear if the effect is systemic or local to the exercised musculature. The aim of our study was to investigate whether fatiguing isometric exercise of the spinal and hip extensors would result in increased pressure pain threshold (PPT) at sites local to and remote from the exercised muscles in healthy men and women and whether there is a relationship between central sensitization, psychosocial factors, and PPT. Subjects 35 healthy adults (age 27.1 ± 4.5 years, 22 women). Methods This was a within-subjects cohort study. Participants completed questionnaires quantifying central sensitization, pain catastrophizing, sleepiness/insomnia, anxiety, and depression. PPT was assessed at the lumbar and thoracic paraspinals, hamstrings, gastrocnemius, wrist, and third digit before and immediately after participants performed the Biering-Sorensen test to failure. Results PPT increased postexercise in the thoracic paraspinals, hamstrings, and gastrocnemius in men and women and in the lumbar paraspinals in men only but did not change at the wrist and digit sites. A lower average PPT at baseline was associated with a higher central sensitization scores. A greater increase in average PPT postfatigue was significantly associated with higher average PPT at baseline. Conclusions Exercise-induced hypoalgesia occurs at sites overlying the muscles involved in fatiguing exercise, but not at remote sites, and is more evident in males than females. The magnitude of EIH depends upon baseline PPT. Even in healthy individuals, greater central sensitization is associated with lower baseline PPT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To date, pain relief in general continues to be the most prominent outcome measurement in daily routine care and clinical research. Nevertheless, the awareness of a shift toward more functional outcomes and/or emotional and cognitive outcomes has been raised. The interplay between bodily functions (such as pain intensity) and emotional or cognitive factors, however, has not yet been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to systematically review the evidence for associations between bodily functions and cognitive and emotional factors in patients with chronic pain who are treated with neuromodulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four data bases were consulted for this systematic literature review: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase. The Downs and Black Checklist (modified) was used to assess the risk of bias. The study protocol was prospectively registered at the International prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO, CRD42021226803). If two or more studies reported correlation coefficients for a specific association, a meta-analysis based on correlation coefficients was performed for that specific association. RESULTS The initial data base search identified a total of 1432 studies, of which 19 studies were eventually included in the systematic review. Evidence was found for two associations: 1) a positive correlation between pain intensity and anxiety (r = 0.42; 95% CI, 0.34 to 0.50) and 2) a positive correlation between pain intensity and depression (r = 0.32; 95% CI, 0.10 to 0.51). The association between pain intensity and catastrophizing was not statistically significant (r = 0.23; 95% CI, -0.36 to 0.69). CONCLUSIONS On the basis of the associations between pain intensity and anxiety/depression, a biopsychosocial approach might be the most suitable in clinical practice to properly address all aspects of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health framework in patients who are treated with neuromodulation.

Abstract
Results The majority of participants were between the ages of 25 and 35, and the gender distribution of the demographic distribution was comparable. The prevalence of pain was 86.8% (97/342 dentists). NDI analysis showed that 65.7% had mild disability, 12.8% have a moderate disability, and 1% had severe disability. Bivariate analysis showed that pain was affected by age (p=0.013), orthodontist practices (p=0.031), regular exercise (p < 0.001), using vibrating instruments (p < 0.001), cervical flexion for better vision while working (p < 0.001), knowledge, and experience about ergonomic posture (p < 0.005). Multivariate analysis showed four predictors for pain: age (p=0.017), performing stretching exercises after finishing clinical practice (p=0.022), orthodontist specialty (p=0.029), and performing cervical flexion for better vision while working (p=0.004). Conclusion This study showed that through the application of some strategies such as stretching, exercising, and being careful in using vibrating instruments, the dentist may be able to relieve the pain.

Abstract
AIM To compare the effects of virtual reality (VR) and motor control (MC) exercises. METHODS Forty-one participants with chronic neck pain (CNP) were randomized into the VR or MC group. Both groups performed 18 sessions over 6 weeks. The primary outcomes were pain intensity (visual analogue scale), pain pressure thresholds (PPTs), joint position sense error (JPSE), and muscle performance. The secondary outcomes were the Profile Fitness Mapping Questionnaire (ProFitMap-Neck), Hospital Anxiety-Depression Scale (HADS), and quality of life (SF-36). Data were analysed using T-Tests, and Fisher's Exact Test. Mean (standard deviation), median (interquartile range), effect size and %95 confidence interval (CI) were reported. RESULTS The results of Independent T-Tests showed that VR was advantageous in terms of PPTs of the C1/C2 and C5/C6 articular pillar bilaterally and large effect size (Cohen's d > 0.8, p < 0.05). Moreover, VR was more effective in decreasing JPSE (Cohen's d > 0.08; mean difference changes between -2.91 and -1.24, %95 CI -4.47 to 0.80) and functional limitation (ProFitMap-Neck) (Cohen's d = 0.7, mean difference 8.27, %95 CI 0.20 to 16.35). The results of T-Tests demonstrated that neither intervention was superior in terms of pain intensity, muscle performance, symptoms (ProFitMap-Neck), HADS, or SF-36 (Cohen's d < 0.5). CONCLUSIONS VR can be applied for improving proprioception and for decreasing cervical articular pain in CNP patients. In addition, VR may be more effective for decreasing functional limitations in patients. Clinicians can choose MC exercises with or without VR for improving pain, muscle performance, symptoms, anxiety/depression, and quality of life.

Abstract
Background Lifestyle behaviour in children and adolescents has become increasingly sedentary and occupied with digital work. Concurrently, there has been an increase in the prevalence of headache, neck- and low back pain, which are leading causes of disability globally. Extensive near work and use of digital devices are demanding for both the visual system and the upper body head-stabilizing musculature. Uncorrected vision problems are present in up to 40% of Nordic school children, and a lack of corrective eye wear may cause eyestrain, musculoskeletal pain and headache. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between laboured reading, musculoskeletal pain, uncorrected vision, and lifestyle behaviours in children and adolescents. Methods This was a cross-sectional study with a total of 192 Norwegian school children aged 10–11 and 15–16 years. As a part of a school vision testing program, the children completed an online questionnaire about general and ocular health, socioeconomic status, academic ambition, near work and related symptoms, upper body musculoskeletal pain, and physical and outdoor activities. Results The 15–16-year-olds had a more indoor, sedentary, digital-based lifestyle with higher academic demands, compared with the 10–11-year-olds. Concurrently, reading became more laboured and upper body musculoskeletal pain increased with age. Girls reported more symptoms, higher academic ambitions, and more time spent on schoolwork and reading, compared with boys. Non-compliance in wearing prescribed eye wear (glasses or contact lenses), increased use of near digital devices, and experiencing visual stress (glare) were positively associated with laboured reading and upper body musculoskeletal pain. Conclusions A screen-based lifestyle with high academic demands challenges the ability to sustain long hours of static, intensive near work. Extensive near work tires the visual system and upper body musculature and provokes laboured reading and musculoskeletal pain symptoms. This study emphasizes the importance of regular eye examinations in school children, and the need to raise awareness among children, parents, and school- and health personnel about the importance of optimal vision and visual environment for academic performance and health.

Abstract
Risk factors associated with back pain vary in different countries. Given the lack of studies in Latin America, our study aimed to assess back pain and its associated factors for six years in Southern Brazilian school children. All children attending the fifth grade of Teutônia, Brazil, were invited to participate in the study. Only schoolchildren who did not report back pain were included in the first assessment. The schoolchildren completed the Back Pain and Body Posture Evaluation Instrument (BackPEI) during three assessments (2011, 2014, and 2017). BackPEI assesses the presence of back pain and possible associated risk factors (postural, behavioral, and sociodemographic). Generalized estimated equations (GEE) were used to perform a Poisson regression model with robust variance for longitudinal analysis. After six years of follow-up, 75 schoolchildren completed all the assessments. The risk factors associated with back pain were spending more than six hours daily watching television, lifting objects from the ground adopting an inadequate posture, using another backpack type different from those with two straps, and carrying a backpack in an asymmetric way. These results are important in guiding the planning of public policies to minimize this public health problem.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pain neuroscience education (PNE) and exercise have emerged as potential interventions in adolescents with chronic pain; however, very few studies have explored their effectiveness. Blended-learning approaches combining face-to-face and online educational sessions have also emerged as facilitating methods of health education. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of exercises and PNE versus exercise alone in adolescents with chronic neck pain (NP). METHODS A randomized controlled trial with 6-month follow-up was conducted in 2 high schools. Over 8 weeks, a total of 127 adolescents with chronic NP were randomly allocated to either (1) perform functional and region-specific exercises, including generalized neuromuscular control, endurance, and strength exercises, as well as exercises targeting the deep neck flexor and extensor muscles and scapular stabilizer muscles; or (2) perform the same exercise-based intervention plus PNE. Pain intensity (primary outcome), disability, sleep, catastrophizing, fear of movement, self-efficacy, and knowledge of pain neuroscience were assessed at baseline, postintervention, and 6-month follow-up. Neck and scapular muscle endurance and pressure pain thresholds were assessed at baseline and postintervention. Patient's Global Impression of Change was assessed postintervention and at 6-month follow-up. RESULTS There was a significant decrease in pain intensity from baseline to postintervention and from baseline to follow-up in both groups, but there were no between-group differences or interactions between time and groups. These results were similar for the secondary outcomes, except for knowledge of pain neuroscience, for which a significant group and time interaction was found. CONCLUSION Exercise and exercise plus PNE were similarly effective in treating adolescents with chronic NP, and the results were maintained for up to 6 months. Further studies are needed to explore the effect of these interventions for longer follow-ups.

Abstract
To compare differences in postural balance, pain and depression in patients with chronic and acute low back pain, twenty patients with chronic and twenty patients with acute low back pain from the Edward Francis Small Hospital (Banjul, Gambia), as well as 20 age-matched healthy controls participated in the study. A modified Romberg test was used to assess postural balance during one minute with closed eyes. Body sway in the anteroposterior and mediolateral axes was video-recorded during test performance and further analyzed with an open source software for movement analyses (CvMob). Pain sensitivity was assessed by means of pressure pain thresholds and depression by a self-report questionnaire (PHQ-9). As results, patients with chronic low back pain displayed higher body sway in the anteroposterior and mediolateral axes, as well as faster body sway than patients with acute low back pain and healthy controls. Nevertheless, group differences disappeared when depression was introduced as a covariate, indicating a major role of depression in postural balance deficits of patients with pain disorders. As conclusions, the assessment of postural balance and depression should be implemented in the clinical routine for the design of tailored interventions in pain conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders, having an age-standardised prevalence rate of 27.0 per 1000 population in 2019. This literature review describes the global epidemiology and trends associated with neck pain, before exploring the psychological and biological risk factors associated with the initiation and progression of neck pain. METHODS The PubMed database and Google Scholar search engine were searched up to May 21, 2021. Studies were included that used human subjects and evaluated the effects of biological or psychological factors on the occurrence or progression of neck pain, or reported its epidemiology. RESULTS Psychological risk factors, such as long-term stress, lack of social support, anxiety, and depression are important risk factors for neck pain. In terms of the biological risks, neck pain might occur as a consequence of certain diseases, such as neuromusculoskeletal disorders or autoimmune diseases. There is also evidence that demographic characteristics, such as age and sex, can influence the prevalence and development of neck pain, although further research is needed. CONCLUSIONS The findings of the present study provide a comprehensive and informative overview that should be useful for the prevention, diagnosis, and management of neck pain.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Proprioception deficits have previously been reported in patients with non-specific chronic neck pain (NSCNP), with a comprehensive and valid battery of tests still required. This study aimed to investigate the test-retest and inter-rater reliability of cervical proprioception in participants without NSCNP and to examine differences in proprioception between participants with and without NSCNP. Twenty participants without NSCNP and 20 age- and sex-matched participants with NSCNP were recruited. Proprioception tests were sequentially performed in random order, in four head-to-neutral movement directions (starting positions at mid-flexion, mid-extension and mid-right/mid-left rotation head-neck positions and end position at neutral head-neck posture) and two head-to-target movement directions (starting position from neutral head-neck posture and end positions at right and left 45° rotation), with a laser beam device secured onto their forehead. Participants performed all tests in sitting at a 1-m distance from a whiteboard. The average deviations of the laser beam mark from set targets marked on the whiteboard represented proprioception deficits. The two-way random, absolute agreement model of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), the standard error of the measurement (SEM) and the smallest detectable difference (SDD) were used as measures of reliability. Between-group differences were examined with the independent samples t test.
Results
The reliability of the laser beam device in participants without neck pain varied from poor to good. The following tests demonstrated good reliability: test-retest ‘Head-to-neutral from flexion’ (ICC: 0.77–0.78; SDD: 5.73–6.84 cm), inter-rater ‘Head-to-neutral from flexion’ (ICC: 0.80–0.82; SDD: 6.20–6.45 cm) and inter-rater ‘Head-to-neutral from right/left rotation’ (ICC: 0.80–0.84; SDD: 5.92–6.81 cm). Differences between participants with and without NSCNP were found only in head-to-neutral from flexion (4.10–4.70 cm); however, those were within the limits of the SDD values of the HtN from flexion test.
Conclusions
The laser beam device can be reliably used in clinical practice only in the aforementioned head-neck movement directions, based on the findings of the present study. The between-group differences noted involved only the head mid-flexion to neutral test, possibly denoting proprioception deficits only in this movement direction, for reasons that require further evaluation.

Predictors of pain persistence and disability in high-school students with chronic neck pain at 6-month follow-up. Qual Life Res 2021; 31:803-816. Abstract
BACKGROUND Neck pain tends to persist for periods of 1 to 4 years of follow-up in adolescents, and a high percentage of them report disability. However, studies assessing the factors associated with persistent neck pain and disability in this age group are scarce. This study aimed to explore the association between psychosocial factors, sleep, and symptoms of central sensitization at baseline and the persistence of neck pain and disability at 6-month follow-up. METHODS A total of 710 adolescents with chronic neck pain were assessed at baseline with an online questionnaire that collected information on sociodemographic data, presence of musculoskeletal pain, pain intensity, physical activity, functional disability, depression, anxiety, stress, quality of sleep, catastrophizing, kinesiophobia, self-efficacy, and symptoms of central sensitization. At 6-month follow-up, adolescents were reassessed for disability and pain intensity and categorized as recovered or reporting persistent neck pain. RESULTS Of the 710 participants with neck pain at baseline, 334 were classified as having persistent neck pain and 375 adolescents as being recovered at 6-month follow-up. Multivariable analysis showed that female gender (OR 1.47; p = 0.04) and symptoms of central sensitization (OR 1.02; p = 0.001) at baseline were positively associated with the persistence of neck pain at 6-month follow-up. Similarly, higher levels of disability (β = 0.41; p < 0.001) and symptoms of central sensitization (β = 0.28; p < 0.001) at the baseline were positively associated with disability. CONCLUSIONS Symptoms of central sensitization and disability at baseline should be considered in the assessment and design of interventions for adolescents with chronic neck pain as an attempt to minimize its future impact on pain persistence and disability.

Abstract
Background and aims Psychological traits such as pain catastrophizing may play a role in the development of chronic pelvic pain (CPP). Pain catastrophizing is the tendency to amplify negative cognitive and emotional pain processes. The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) assesses elements of pain catastrophizing divided into three subgroups of factors (rumination, helplessness and magnification). Previous studies have shown associations between CPP and increased pain sensitivity, widespread generalized hyperalgesia, and decreased pain thresholds, but the relation between pain catastrophizing and specific pain thresholds has not yet been widely examined in this patient group. The aims of this study were (a) to determine if catastrophizing is increased in women with CPP compared with pain-free women, (b) to assess the importance of pain catastrophizing, psychological distress variables, and subjective pain sensitivity for pain thresholds of heat, cold and pressure in these two groups, and (c) to determine whether psychological variables or pain thresholds best contribute to the differentiation between CPP and controls. Methods Thirty-seven women with chronic pelvic pain who underwent diagnostic laparoscopy on the suspicion of endometriosis participated along with 55 healthy and pain-free controls. All underwent quantitative sensory testing on six locations on the body to determine heat (HPT), cold (CPT) and pressure (PPT) pain thresholds. The PCS, the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire (PSQ), the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale, (HADS) demographics and clinical data were collected prospectively. Principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least square regressions were used to assess the associations between PCS scores and pain thresholds. Results The women with CPP scored significantly higher on PCS than the healthy controls. PCS-helplessness, PCS-rumination and HADS-depression were significantly associated with pain thresholds for the whole group. In the CPP group, PCS-rumination, body mass index and PSQ were significant regressors for HPT and CPT. The PCS and the HADS subscales were strongly intercorrelated in women with CPP and were stronger regressors of group membership than the three pain thresholds. In the group of healthy control women, no relationships were found to be significant. The psychological variables were somewhat stronger significant regressors than pain thresholds (also significant) for group membership. Conclusions Women with CPP have significantly higher pain catastrophizing scores than women without CPP. The pain catastrophizing rumination factor is significantly associated with pain thresholds of heat and cold in CPP women. PCS and HADS are strongly intercorrelated and PSQ correlates positively with these variables. It seems that the psychological variables are important for group differentiation. Implications The results clearly indicate the need for a multimodal assessment (bio-psycho-social) of CPP patients including psychological symptoms such as catastrophizing, anxiety and depression. The registration of semi-objective pain thresholds captures both specific pain sensitivity information (mechanical pressure, cold or heat) and the degree of wide spread pain hypersensitivity. There is a need for future larger studies investigating whether certain profiles in the clinical presentations (including pain thresholds and psychological variables) are associated with outcomes after different types of interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The objective of this systematic review was to investigate the effectiveness of electrical stimulation (ES) for neck pain (NP). DATABASES AND DATA TREATMENT The databases CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE (via OVID), PEDro and Web of Science were searched, with no date restrictions. Two independent reviewers selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting pain, range of motion or psychosocial factors in people with NP, in which ES was applied. Methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro scale. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) was used to evaluate the quality of evidence. Thirty studies met eligibility criteria. RESULTS Main results showed evidence of moderate quality that ES combined with other intervention significantly decreases the pain intensity compared to other intervention immediately post-treatment and at short-term follow-up; evidence of low quality showed significant effects of ES combined with other intervention in decreasing neck disability compared to other intervention immediately post-treatment; evidence of very-low quality that ES increased the pressure pain threshold compared to placebo immediately post-treatment and that ES + other intervention also increased the pressure pain threshold compared to other intervention at short-term follow-up. CONCLUSIONS ES combined with other intervention seems to be useful to relieve pain and to improve disability in people with NP, however, more studies are needed. SIGNIFICANCE Electrical stimulation seems to be effective for improving pain intensity, immediately post-treatment in people with neck pain, mainly as an adjunct therapeutic modality. Nevertheless, high-quality RCTs are still needed to investigate the efficacy of electrical stimulation in neck pain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE to describe the perception of musculoskeletal pain in the population and how the state of confinement (adopted as a measure to control contagion by COVID-19) has interfered with it, as well as identifying the sociodemographic, occupational, physical, and psychosocial factors involved. METHOD an observational, cross-sectional and analytical study, with simple random probabilistic sampling, aimed at residents in Spain over 18 years old during the confinement period. An ad hoc survey was conducted, consisting in 59 items. RESULTS a total of 3,247 surveys were answered. Persistent musculoskeletal pain or significant episodes thereof increased 22.2% during confinement. The main location was the spine (49.5%). The related factors were decreased physical activity, increased seated position, and use of electronic devices. The psychological impact of confinement was also related to the perception of musculoskeletal pain. CONCLUSION the state of confinement causes an increase in the perception of musculoskeletal pain. The identification of a particularly sensitive population profile, as well as that of the related factors, allows establishing multidisciplinary approaches in health promotion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Given the complex and unclear etiology of neck pain, it is important to understand the differences in central sensitization as well as psychosocial factors in individuals with chronic neck pain and healthy controls. The purpose of this study was to benchmark differences in central sensitization, psychosocial factors, and range of motion between people with nonspecific chronic neck pain and healthy controls and to analyze the correlation between pain intensity, neck disability, and psychosocial factors in people with chronic neck pain. METHODS Thirty individuals with chronic neck pain and 30 healthy controls were included in this case-control study. Outcome measures were as follows: central sensitization (pressure pain threshold, temporal summation, and conditioned pain modulation), psychosocial factors (depressive symptoms, pain catastrophizing, and quality of life), and active cervical range of motion. RESULTS People with neck pain had lower local pressure pain threshold, a decrease in conditioned pain modulation, more depressive symptoms, greater pain catastrophizing, lower quality of life, and reduced range of motion for neck rotation when compared with healthy controls. In people with neck pain, moderate correlations were observed between pain intensity and quality of life (ρ = -0.479), disability and pain catastrophizing (ρ = 0.379), and disability and quality of life (ρ = -0.456). CONCLUSIONS People with neck pain have local hyperalgesia, impaired conditioning pain modulation, depressive symptoms, pain catastrophizing, low quality of life, and reduced active range of motion during neck rotation, which should be taken into account during assessment and treatment. IMPACT This study shows that important outcomes, such as central sensitization and psychosocial factors, should be considered during assessment and treatment of individuals with nonspecific chronic neck pain. In addition, pain intensity and neck disability are correlated with psychosocial factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND BDSM is an acronym describing bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism. Afflicting or receiving pain is usually an important part of the BDSM interaction. AIM This research will focus on better understanding the aspect of pain within a BDSM interaction. METHODS Submissive and dominant counterparts of 35 couples were recruited to participate in a BDSM interaction, of which 34 dominants and 33 submissives were included in the analyses. A non-BDSM interested control group (n = 27) was included to control for social interaction, of which 24 were included in the analyses. OUTCOMES This research investigates the differences in (i) baseline pain thresholds, (ii) the impact of a BDSM interaction on those thresholds, and (iii) threshold moderating factors like pain cognition between submissive and dominant BDSM participants and control individuals. RESULTS BDSM practitioners have a higher pain threshold overall and a BSDM interaction will result in a temporary elevation of pain thresholds for submissives. Additionally, pain thresholds in dominants will be dependent upon their fear of pain and tendency to catastrophize pain and submissives will experience less fear of pain than the control group. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS By further enhancing our understanding of the mechanisms behind a BDSM interaction in this way, we aspire to relieve the stigma these practitioners still endure. STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS This is one of the first studies of its kind with a large sample size compared to similar research, which makes it a significant contribution to the field. It must be mentioned that there is a possible selection bias because recruitment was only done through the Flemish BDSM community and specifically those who visit clubs. Additionally, pain threshold remains a subjective measurement, which must be taken into account. Abstract
Musculoskeletal pain and headache are leading causes of years lived with disability, and an escalating problem in school children. Children spend increasingly more time reading and using digital screens, and increased near tasks intensify the workload on the precise coordination of the visual and head-stabilizing systems. Even minor vision problems can provoke headache and neck- and shoulder (pericranial) pain. This study investigated the association between headaches, pericranial tenderness, vision problems, and the need for glasses in children. An eye and physical examination was performed in twenty 10–15 year old children presenting to the school health nurse with headache and pericranial pain (pain group), and twenty age-and-gender matched classmates (control group). The results showed that twice as many children in the pain group had uncorrected vision and needed glasses. Most children were hyperopic, and glasses were recommended mainly for near work. Headache and pericranial tenderness were significantly correlated to reduced binocular vision, reduced distance vision, and the need for new glasses. That uncorrected vision problems are related to upper body musculoskeletal symptoms and headache, indicate that all children with these symptoms should have a full eye examination to promote health and academic performance.

BACKGROUND In the context of interventions aimed at reducing pain, disability, and maladaptive pain cognitions in chronic neck pain, it is hypothesized that patients who have greater symptom reduction possibly also demonstrate greater improvement in cervical motor output. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effect of pain neuroscience education plus cognition-targeted motor control training on cervical motor output. METHODS Impairments in cervical motor output were measured in 64 subjects with chronic neck pain using standardized tests. Cervical muscle strength, cervical mobility, balance, and cervical neuromuscular control were derived. To assess the differences between groups in response to treatment, a random-intercept linear mixed-models analysis, applying a diagonal covariance matrix, was used. RESULTS A significant treatment × time interaction effect was found for neuromuscular control of the deep cervical flexors, favoring the experimental treatment at 3 months' follow-up (mean group difference: 1.982; 95% confidence interval 0.779, 3.185; large effect size d = 0.82). Significant main effects of time were found for the neuromuscular capacity of scapulothoracic muscles and for cervical mobility. No significant effects were found for balance, cervical muscle strength, or endurance of cervical flexors. CONCLUSION Pain neuroscience education combined with cognition-targeted motor control training is not more effective than biomedically focused education and exercise therapy for improving cervical motor output in people with chronic neck pain. Our findings question the relative importance of factors such as pain, disability, and maladaptive pain cognitions on cervical motor output and the need to address it in treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Central sensitization (CS) is an important feature in musculoskeletal chronic pain, and associated symptoms can be assessed using the Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI). OBJECTIVES This study aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt the CSI to the European Portuguese language and to assess its validity and reliability in adolescents with musculoskeletal chronic pain. METHODS The European Portuguese version of the CSI was established following the translation and testing processes recommended by international guidelines. Then, this version of the CSI was completed by 1,730 adolescents, who also completed the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire; the Pain Catastrophizing Scale; the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale; the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia; and the Basic Scale on Insomnia Complaints and Quality of Sleep. Test-retest reliability and measurement error, internal consistency, hypothesis testing, and factor analysis were assessed for the translated version of the CSI. RESULTS Cronbach's alpha was 0.91, the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.94 (95% confidence interval: 0.90, 0.96), and the standard error of measurement and smallest detectable change were 4.15 and 11.50, respectively. Fair correlations were found between CSI and fear of movement (Spearman's correlation [rs ] = 0.46), sleep (rs = 0.46), and catastrophizing (rs = 0.49). Moderate to good correlations were found between CSI and depression (rs = 0.60), anxiety (rs = 0.59), and stress (rs = 0.65). CONCLUSION The European Portuguese version of the CSI was considered easy to understand and showed very good internal consistency, excellent test-retest reliability, and excellent construct validity in a community sample of adolescents with musculoskeletal chronic pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervical sensorimotor control (CSMC) outcomes have been suggested to be important in the assessment of individuals with neck pain, despite the lack of consistent supporting evidence that CSMC skills are related to neck pain. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate whether CSMC changes over time in individuals with chronic idiopathic neck pain and whether neck pain characteristics are associated with CSMC. DESIGN A longitudinal observational study was performed. METHODS A total 50 participants with chronic idiopathic neck pain and 50 matched participants who were healthy (controls) completed 7 CSMC tests (including 14 test conditions): joint position error, postural balance, subjective visual vertical, head tilt response, The Fly, smooth pursuit neck torsion, and head steadiness. Neck pain characteristics included pain intensity (visual analog scale), pain duration, and neck disability (Neck Disability Index). Linear mixed models were used to investigate whether any factors were associated with changes in CSMC. RESULTS Neck pain intensity was associated with 1 of 14 CSMC test conditions (balance with torsion and eyes open), and neck disability was associated with balance with eyes open and high-load head steadiness. Other factors, including sex, age, body mass index, physical activity levels, and neck pain duration, showed no association with CSMC. LIMITATIONS Although all other tests involved computerized data collection, the joint position error test was administered manually, introducing the risk of researcher bias. CONCLUSIONS The few associations between test conditions and neck pain characteristics were at best weak; hence, these are likely to be chance findings. These results suggest that CSMC may not be associated with improvement/worsening of chronic idiopathic neck pain, spawning debate on the clinical usefulness of CSMC tests.

However, the large variety of sensorimotor control tests used in varying populations makes it difficult to draw conclusions about their clinical value. We aimed to compare cervical sensorimotor control outcomes between individuals with chronic idiopathic neck pain and asymptomatic individuals using a battery of recommended tests, and to investigate the correlation between cervical sensorimotor control outcomes and pain intensity and neck disability. DESIGN Case-control study. METHODS Fifty participants with chronic idiopathic neck pain and 50 age- and sex-matched asymptomatic controls completed 7 cervical sensorimotor control tests: joint position error (including joint position error torsion), postural balance, subjective visual vertical, head-tilt response, "the Fly," smooth pursuit neck torsion, and head steadiness. Between-group differences were investigated with the Mann-Whitney U test. Correlations between tests and levels of neck pain and disability were investigated using the Spearman rho. RESULTS There were no differences in cervical sensorimotor outcomes between participants with chronic idiopathic neck pain and asymptomatic controls for any test (P = .203-.981). For each test, "poor performers" consisted of both individuals with and without neck pain. Correlations were weak between tests and levels of neck pain (r = 0.010-0.294) and neck disability (r = 0.007-0.316). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that sensorimotor control disturbances in individuals with chronic idiopathic neck pain may not be present, spawning debate on the clinical usefulness of these tests. Abstract
Purpose: To identify and critically assess the evidence on the association between psychosocial variables and neck pain (NP) in adolescents.Methods: Searches were conducted using seven electronic databases. Two reviewers screened studies for inclusion and assessed the quality of included studies. A meta-analysis was performed for studies that measured depression and sleep.Results: Fourteen studies were included in a total of 21 comparisons. Statistically significant differences were found for depression (OR = 2.36; CI95% = 1.26-4.42 and OR = 2.26; CI95% = 1.06-4.84 for girls and boys), anxiety (OR = 1.43; CI95% = 1.20-1.70), catastrophizing (WMD = 6.6; 95%CI = 3.1;10.1 points), stress (OR = 2.00; CI95% = 1.50-2.70), and sleep (OR = 1.63; CI95% = 1.23-2.18). Two studies on self-efficacy reported contradictory results.Conclusions: There is very limited to limited evidence that adolescents with NP have higher levels of depression, anxiety, catastrophizing, stress and report lower sleep quality, and self-efficacy than adolescents without NP. There is also conflicting evidence on whether self-efficacy differs between adolescents with and without NP.

Abstract
Osteopathic manual treatment has been recommended as a non-pharmacological therapy for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). However, to date, no study has supported the effectiveness of this intervention with respect to the symptoms of the disease. Our goal was to assess the effect of an osteopathic manual technique for the lower esophageal sphincter on GERD symptoms, cervical mobility and on the C4 spinous process pressure pain threshold (PPTs). METHODS A randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial was performed. Sixty subjects suffering from GERD participated in this study and were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (EG) (n = 29), who received the osteopathic technique for the lower esophageal sphincter, or to a control group (CG) (n = 31), who received a manual contact, which mimicked the osteopathic technique without exerting any therapeutic force. Randomization was computer-generated, with allocation concealed by sequentially numbered, opaque, sealed envelopes. The GerdQ questionnaire was used to assess symptom changes the week after intervention. Cervical Range of Motion (CROM) and algometer were used to evaluate cervical mobility and PPTs before and after both treatments. Before-after between groups comparison (t-test) was used for statistical analysis of the outcome, with two measurement points (GerdQ), while repeated-measures ANOVA was used for those outcomes with four measurement points (CROM and PPT). RESULTS The application of the osteopathic manual treatment in subjects with GERD produced a significant improvement in symptoms one week after the intervention (p = 0.005) with a between-groups difference of 1.49 points in GerdQ score (95% CI: 0.47-2.49). PPT C4 improved in the EG after the treatment (p = 0.034; η2 = 0.048) (between-groups difference 8.78 Newton/cm2; 95% CI: 0.48-17.09). CROM also increased in the EG compared to the CG (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.108) (between-groups difference 33.89 degrees; 95% CI: 15.17-52.61). CONCLUSIONS The manual osteopathic technique produces an improvement in GERD symptoms one week after treatment, cervical mobility, and PPTs. This may mean that osteopathic treatment is useful for improving symptoms of GERD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional disability affects a large percentage of adolescents with chronic pain. The functional disability inventory (FDI) has been widely described in the literature to assess functional disability, with good psychometric properties. PURPOSE To translate and adapt the FDI to European Portuguese language and assess the validity, reliability, and measurement error of this version in adolescents with chronic musculoskeletal pain and, specifically, with neck and low back pain. METHOD The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the FDI was conducted according to international guidelines. After that, 1730 adolescents completed the following scales and questionnaires: FDI, Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, Numeric Pain Rating Scale, Pain Catastrophizing Scale, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, and Basic Scale on Insomnia complaints and Quality of Sleep. Sixty-three of these adolescents, with at least one painful body site, completed the questionnaire twice to assess reliability and measurement error. Exploratory factor analysis and hypothesis testing was used to assess construct validity. RESULTS Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.81 and 0.88, ICC was 0.86 (95%CI:0.77; 0.92), the SEM and the SDC were 2.50 and 6.93 (total score of 60 points), respectively. Fair to moderate correlations were obtained between FDI and pain intensity (rs = 0.33 to 0.43), catastrophizing (rs = 0.41 to 0.44) depression, anxiety, and stress (rs = 0.48 to 0.53), fear of movement (rs = 0.32 to 0.42), and sleep impairments (rs = 0.34 to 0.38). The factor analysis suggested a two-factor solution. CONCLUSION The European Portuguese version of the FDI has very good internal consistency, good test-retest reliability, and construct validity when used in a sample of community adolescents with chronic pain.Implications for rehabilitationOne of the most widely instruments used to assess functional disability is the Functional Disability Inventory (FDI), which in its original version has good psychometric properties and is recommended by the Pediatric Initiative on Methods, Measurement, and Pain Assessment in Clinical Trials;However, the FDI has not been translated yet into European Portuguese language and its psychometric properties have not been assessed in adolescents with chronic spinal pain;This study suggests that the European Portuguese version of the FDI has very good internal consistency, good test-retest reliability as well as construct validity when used in a sample of community adolescents with chronic spinal pain;Therefore, these findings suggest the use of the European Portuguese version of the FDI to assess the functional disability in adolescents with chronic spinal pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neck pain (NP) is highly prevalent in young people, but there has been no systematic review synthetizing the functional changes associated with this in adolescents. The aim of the present study was to identify and assess critically the evidence on the functional changes associated with NP in adolescents, specifically for: (a) posture; (b) postural control; (c) range of motion; (d) proprioception; (e) muscle function; and (f) sensory threshold. METHODS We searched PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, PEdro, Scielo, Scopus and Academic Search Premier databases for relevant studies. Two reviewers screened studies for inclusion and assessed the quality of the included studies. One reviewer extracted relevant data from the included studies. A meta-analysis was performed for studies that measured forward head posture (FHP). RESULTS Ten studies were included and a total of 15 comparisons for different variables were made. When compared with adolescents without NP, those with NP showed no differences in cervicothoracic posture or FHP. However, statistically significant differences were found for range of motion: weighted mean difference (WMD) from -14.0° (-21.1° to -1.1°) to 9.4° (2.8° to 16.0°); flexor muscle endurance: WMD -11.4 (-21.8 to -0.9) s; extensor muscle endurance: WMD -42.0 (-77.8 to -6.3) s; joint repositioning error for right and left rotation: WMD 1.9° (0.8° to 2.9°) and 2.4° (1.3° to 3.5°), respectively; and pressure pain threshold: WMD from -15.6 (-18.5 to -12.8) to -9.3 (-11.3 to 7.2) N/ cm². CONCLUSION There is very limited to limited evidence that there is no difference in posture between adolescents with and without NP, and that there is a difference for range of motion, muscle function, proprioception and pressure pain threshold.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sensorimotor control is commonly reported in neck pain research and rapidly gaining interest in clinical practice. Joint position error (conventional and torsion), postural balance, subjective visual vertical, head tilt response, The Fly®, smooth pursuit neck torsion and head steadiness are tests that have been reported to assess cervical sensorimotor control. However, it is unknown whether clinicians could use one test, or a test battery, to appropriately assess cervical sensorimotor control and improve efficiency. Our main research question is: Do seven cervical sensorimotor control tests measure unique or similar characteristics of sensorimotor control in individuals with chronic idiopathic neck pain? METHODS Principle components factor analysis. Data from seven cervical sensorimotor control tests of 50 participants with chronic idiopathic neck pain were included. Individual factors, potentially related to sensorimotor control, were determined by Eigen values >1.00 and inspection of a loading plot. Items with loadings ≥0.40 were considered satisfactory for inclusion in a factor. RESULTS All cervical sensorimotor control tests were found to measure unique skills. Four factors were isolated with two, postural balance and head steadiness, accounting for most of the variance across tests. The remaining two factors, continuous movement accuracy and perceived verticality, contributed less to the observed variance. CONCLUSION Postural balance and head steadiness were the major underlying factors explaining cervical sensorimotor control in the current sample. However, our results imply that all seven tests are independent and measure different skills. It is not possible to recommend a test battery for clinical practice, as all tests measure unique skills which appear to be independent of each other.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic pain is associated with cortical reorganization, and interventions targeting cortical remapping, such as visual feedback of the painful body segment, seem promising. The primary aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of visual feedback of the neck, using mirrors on pain intensity. Secondary aims were to evaluate the impact of visual feedback on neck range of motion and unadjusted cognitive processes. METHODS Pain intensity, range of motion, fear of movement, catastrophizing and anxiety were assessed before and after 10 repetitions of each of the neck movements, with (experimental group; n = 21) and without (control group; n = 21) visual feedback of the neck. RESULTS A significant increase in the range of motion of all neck movements (p < 0.05) was found in the experimental group when compared with the control group. Increases in range of motion varied between 2.5° and 3.4°. No significant effects were found for the remaining variables (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The study findings suggest that performing a series of 10 active movements of the neck while observing the reflection of the neck in a mirror might help to improve neck range of motion. Furthermore, our results support further studies investigating the effect of longer interventions using visual feedback of the neck, either alone or combined with other interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To date, there are no cross-sectional studies considering the influence of disability level in patients with non-specific chronic neck pain. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to determine kinesiophobia, active cervical range of movement (CROM), and pressure pain threshold (PPT) differences between different disability levels (mild, moderate, and severe) in subjects with non-specific chronic neck pain and asymptomatic subjects. METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional study. Subjects were recruited from a primary health care center and an outpatient department hospital. A total sample of 128 subjects, 96 of them with nonspecific chronic neck pain and 32 asymptomatic, were recruited. The NDI was used to divide the subjects with chronic neck pain into 3 groups (mild, moderate, and severe disability). The main outcome measurement was the Tampa Scale of kinesiophobia (TSK-11). The secondary outcome measurements were the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), PPT (trapezius and tibialis anterior), CROM (flexion, extension, rotation, and lateral inclination) and pain duration. RESULTS The ANOVA results revealed, in the comparisons between groups, statistically significant differences for the VAS between the mild-severe (P < 0.01) and moderate-severe groups (P < 0.01), but not between the mild-moderate groups (P > 0.05); for the TSK, differences were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Kinesiophobia may not be influenced by disability level in patients with chronic non-specific neck pain. Nevertheless, pain intensity and chronicity of patients with severe neck disability are increased with respect to mild and moderate disability index.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the views of adolescents with chronic idiopathic neck pain toward an intervention consisting of pain neuroscience education and exercise administered in the school setting. METHODS Four focus group interviews were conducted with 21 adolescents with chronic idiopathic neck pain who participated in a 4-week intervention consisting of pain neuroscience education and exercise. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS Two main themes emerged: the perceived relevance of acquired knowledge and the perceived adequacy of the intervention. CONCLUSION An intervention consisting of pain neuroscience education and exercise administered in the school setting is well accepted and considered relevant and appropriate by adolescents with chronic idiopathic neck pain.
