Electrocatalytic and photocatalytic performance of noble metal doped monolayer MoS2 in the hydrogen evolution reaction: A first principles study

Electrodeposition of PdPt Nanoparticles on Edges and S-Vacancies in Exfoliated MoS2 Nanosheets for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Activity

Deposition of metal nanoparticles onto the molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets is an efficient method to tune the electronic structure of the MoS2 and maximize its catalytic performance towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we report the electrodeposition of Pd and Pt nanoparticles onto desulfurized MoS2 nanosheets (MoS2-x) to achieve an improved HER activity in an acidic electrolyte. The initial MoS2 powder was exfoliated and isolated through centrifugation, followed by electrochemical desulfurization to create defect sites. Subsequently, Pt and Pd nanoparticles were electrodeposited onto the S-vacancies of MoS2-x nanosheets. The resulting PdPt nanoparticles, with a diameter of 3.3 ±1.7 nm, were distributed across the surfaces of the nanosheets. A preferential deposition was evident at the edges of the nanosheets, particularly when Pd was deposited first followed by Pt. Owing to this preferential deposition of Pd and Pt and the synergistic interaction of MoS2-x with Pd and Pt, the prepared catalyst exhibited a low overpotential of 30 mV at 10 mA cm-2, which is 2.7× lower than the MoS2-x alone. The prepared catalyst exhibited a 1.7× increase in the mass activity at 20 mV overpotential, relative to that of a commercial Pt/C nanocatalyst, showcasing its promising potential as an alternative catalyst.

Mechanism insight into the N-C polar bond and Pd-Co heterojunction for improved hydrogen evolution activity

Constructing platinum-like materials with excellent catalytic activity and low cost has great significance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) during electrolysis of water. Herein, palladium nanoparticles (NPs) deposition on the surface of Co NPs using nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) as substrate, denoted as N-ZIFC/CoPd-30, are manufactured and served as HER electrocatalysts. Characterization results and density functional theory calculations validate that Pd-Co heterojunctions with NC acting as "electron donators" promote the Pd species transiting to the electron-rich state based on an efficient electron transfer mechanism, namely the N-C polar bonds induced strong metal-support interaction effect. The electron-rich Pd sites are beneficial to HER. Satisfactorily, N-ZIFC/CoPd-30 have only low overpotentials of 16, 162, and 13 mV@-10 mA cm-2 with the small Tafel slopes of 98 mV/decade, 126 mV/decade, and 72 mV/decade in pH of 13, 7, and 0, respectively. The success in fabricating N-ZIFC/CoPd opens a promising path to constructing other platinum-like electrocatalysts with high HER activity.

Coordination polymer and layered double hydroxide dual-precursors derived polymetallic phosphides confined in N-doped hierarchical porous carbon nanoflower as a highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Controllable construction of proficient electrocatalyst with 3D hierarchical architecture to achieve low cost and high efficient overall water splitting is of great significance to the sustainable development. Hereby, trimetallic phosphides confined in N-doped carbon nanoflowers (CoNiP/CoNiFeP@NCNFs) were fabricated using CoNi coordination polymer nanoflowers/CoNiFe layered double hydroxide (CoNi CPNFs/CoNiFe LDH) as precursors followed by phosphorization. Benefiting from the unique 3D hierarchical porous architecture, preeminent conductivity, high specific surface area, efficient mass/charge transfer and synergic effect of various transition metals, the well-designed CoNiP/CoNiFeP@NCNFs exhibit extraordinary electrocatalytic performance for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. Particularly, this novel material can work as a bifunctional catalyst in an integrated water-splitting electrolyzer, which only requires a low voltage of 1.55 V to realize the current density of 10 mA cm-2 with admirable durability (at least 28 h). This work certified the foreground of composites assembled by 3D hierarchical porous carbon and polymetallic phosphides for overall water splitting. It also provided a novel proposal for the rational designing and constructing highly active electrocatalysts by using coordination polymer and LDH as dual-precursors.

Microwave Phosphine-Plasma-Assisted Ultrafast Synthesis of Halogen-Doped Ru/RuP2 with Surface Intermediate Adsorption Modulation for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Anionic modification engineering is a crucial approach to develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, halogen elements (X = Cl, Br, and I)-modified Ru-based nanosheets (X-Ru/RuP2 ) are designed by rapid and eco-friendly microwave-phosphide plasma approach within 60 s. Experimental and density functional theory calculations verify that the introduced halogen element, especially Br, can optimize the surface intermediates adsorption. Specially, the designed Br-Ru/RuP2 favors the water dissociation and following hydrogen adsorption/desorption process. Then, the as-synthesized Br-Ru/RuP2 exhibits low overpotential of 34 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 coupled with small Tafel slope of 27 mV dec-1 in alkaline electrolyte with excellent long-term stability. Moreover, the electrocatalytic performances in acid and neutral media are also boosted via Br element modification. This work paves a novel way to regulate the electronic structure of Ru-based compounds, and then can boost the electrocatalytic kinetics.

CoNiFe alloy nanoparticles encapsulated into nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes toward superior electrocatalytic overall water splitting in alkaline freshwater/seawater under large-current density

Developing bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting with high activity and durability at high current density remains a challenge. In an attempt to overcome this bottleneck, in this work, unique CoNiFe-layered double hydroxide nanoflowers are in situ grown on nickel-iron (NiFe) foam through a corrosive approach and following a chemical vapor deposition process to generate nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes at the presence of melamine (CoNiFe@NCNTs). The coupling effects between various metal species act a key role in accelerating the reaction kinetics. Moreover, the in situ formed NCNTs also favor promoting electrocatalytic activity and stability. For oxygen evolution reaction it requires low overpotentials of 330 and 341 mV in 1M KOH and 1M KOH + seawater to drive 500 mA cm-2. Moreover, water electrolysis can be operated with CoNiFe@NCNTs as both anode and cathode with small voltages of 1.95 and 1.93 V to achieve 500 mA cm-2 in 1M KOH and 1M KOH + seawater, respectively.

First Principles Study of the Photoelectric Properties of Alkaline Earth Metal (Be/Mg/Ca/Sr/Ba)-Doped Monolayers of MoS2

The energy band structure, density of states, and optical properties of monolayers of MoS2 doped with alkaline earth metals (Be/Mg/Ca/Sr/Ba) are systematically studied based on first principles. The results indicate that all the doped systems have a great potential to be formed and structurally stable. In comparison to monolayer MoS2, doping alkaline earth metals results in lattice distortions in the doped system. Therefore, the recombination of photogenerated hole-electron pairs is suppressed effectively. Simultaneously, the introduction of dopants reduces the band gap of the systems while creating impurity levels. Hence, the likelihood of electron transfer from the valence to the conduction band is enhanced, which means a reduction in the energy required for such a transfer. Moreover, doping monolayer MoS2 with alkaline earth metals increases the static dielectric constant and enhances its polarizability. Notably, the Sr-MoS2 system exhibits the highest value of static permittivity, demonstrating the strongest polarization capability. The doped systems exhibit a red-shifted absorption spectrum in the low-energy region. Consequently, the Be/Mg/Ca-MoS2 systems demonstrate superior visible absorption properties and a favorable band gap, indicating their potential as photo-catalysts for water splitting.

State-of-art advances on removal, degradation and electrochemical monitoring of 4-aminophenol pollutants in real samples: A review

p_Aminophenol, namely 4-aminophenol (4-AP), is an aromatic compound including hydroxyl and amino groups contiguous together on the benzene ring, which are suitable chemically reactive, amphoteric, and alleviating agents in nature. Amino phenols are appropriate precursors for synthesizing oxazoles and oxazines. However, since the toxicity of aniline and phenol can harm human and herbal organs, it is essential to improve a reliable technique for the determination of even a trace amount of amino phenols, as well as elimination or (bio)degradation/photodegradation of it to protect both the environment and people's health. For this purpose, various analytical methods have been suggested up till now, including spectrophotometry, liquid chromatography, spectrofluorometric and capillary electrophoresis, etc. However, some drawbacks such as the requirement of complex instruments, high costs, not being portable, slow response time, low sensitivity, etc. prevent them to be employed in a wide range and swift in-situ applications. In this regard, besides the efforts such as (bio)degradation/photodegradation or removal of 4-AP pollutants from real samples, electroanalytical techniques have become a promising alternative for monitoring them with high sensitivity. In this review, it was aimed to emphasize and summarize the recent advances, challenges, and opportunities for removal, degradation, and electrochemical sensing 4-AP in real samples. Electroanalytical monitoring of amino phenols was reviewed in detail and explored the various types of electrochemical sensors applied for detecting and monitoring in real samples. Furthermore, the various technique of removal and degradation of 4-AP in industrial and urban wastes were also deliberated. Moreover, deep criticism of multifunctional nanomaterials to be utilized as a catalyst, adsorbent/biosorbent, and electroactive material for the fabrication of electrochemical sensors was covered along with their unique properties. Future perspectives and conclusions were also criticized to pave the way for further studies in the field of application of up-and-coming nanostructures in environmental applications.

Algae extract delamination of molybdenum disulfide and surface modification with glycidyl methacrylate and polyaniline for the elimination of metal ions from wastewater

A special type of two-dimensional (2D) material based conducting polymer was constructed by green synthesis and in-situ polymerization techniques. The 2D Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS₂) were first synthesized with the combination of, ammonium tetrathiomolybdate dissolved in 20 mL algae extract under stirring. After stirring for about 2 h, and then finally sulfurization was initiated using sulfur powder in 20 mL of sulfuric solution and stirred for 8 h. The resulting black precipitates of MoS₂ were collected by centrifugation at 5000 rpm. Moreover, the prepared MoS₂ was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and form the MoS₂@PGMA. Further, the MoS₂@PGMA is combined with polyaniline (PANI) to form conducting polymer grafted thin film nanosheets named MoS₂@PGMA/PANI with a thickness in micrometer size through grafting method. The prepared materials were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS and EDX techniques. To check the performance of materials the adsorption study was performed. Moreover, the adsorption study toward Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺ showed a tremendous results and the maximum adsorption was 307.7 mg/g and 214.7 mg/g respectively. In addition, the pseudo-first and second order models as well as the adsorption isotherm were investigated using the Langmuir and Freundlich model. The results were best fitted with the pseudo-second order and Langmuir models. The regeneration study was also conducted and MoS₂@PGMA/PANI nanosheets can be easily recycled and restored after five successful recycling. The established methodology for preparing the 2D materials and conducting polymer based MoS₂@PGMA/PANI nanosheets is expected to be applicable for other multiple applications.

Advances in technology and utilization of natural resources for achieving carbon neutrality and a sustainable solution to neutral environment

The greatest environmental issue of the twenty-first century is climate change. Human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are increasing the frequency of extreme weather. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) accounts for 80% of human greenhouse gas emissions. However, CO₂ emissions and global temperature have risen steadily from pre-industrial times. Emissions data are crucial for most carbon emission policymaking and goal-setting. Sustainable and carbon-neutral sources must be used to create green energy and fossil-based alternatives to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Near-real-time monitoring of carbon emissions is a critical national concern and cutting-edge science. This review article provides an overview of the many carbon accounting systems that are now in use and are based on an annual time frame. The primary emphasis of the study is on the recently created carbon emission and eliminating sources and technology, as well as the current application trends for carbon neutrality. We also propose a framework for the most advanced naturally available carbon neutral accounting sources capable of being implemented on a large scale. Forming relevant data and procedures will help the "carbon neutrality" plan decision-making process. The formation of pertinent data and methodologies will give robust database support to the decision-making process for the "carbon neutrality" plan for the globe. In conclusion, this article offers some opinions, opportunities, challenges and future perspectives related to carbon neutrality and carbon emission monitoring and eliminating resources and technologies.

Review of functionalized nano porous membranes for desalination and water purification: MD simulations perspective

Today, it is known that most of the water sources in the world are either drying out or contaminated. With the increasing population, the water demand is increasing drastically almost in every sector each year, which makes processes like water treatment and desalination one of the most critical environmental subjects of the future. Therefore, developing energy-efficient and faster methods are a must for the industry. Using functional groups on the membranes is known to be an effective way to develop shorter routes for water treatment. Accordingly, a review of nano-porous structures having functional groups used or designed for desalination and water treatment is presented in this study. A systematic scan has been conducted in the literature for the studies performed by molecular dynamics simulations. The selected studies have been classified according to membrane geometry, actuation mechanism, functionalized groups, and contaminant materials. Permeability, rejection rate, pressure, and temperature ranges are compiled for all of the studies examined. It has been observed that the pore size of a well-designed membrane should be small enough to reject contaminant molecules, atoms, or ions but wide enough to allow high water permeation. Adding functional groups to membranes is observed to affect the permeability and the rejection rate. In general, hydrophilic functional groups around the pores increase membrane permeability. In contrast, hydrophobic ones decrease the permeability. Besides affecting water permeation, the usage of charged functional groups mainly affects the rejection rate of ions and charged molecules.

Photocatalytic assessed adsorptive removal of tinidazole from aqueous environment using reduced magnetic graphene oxide-bismuth oxychloride and its silver composite

Antibiotics (tinidazole (TNZ)) in wastewater, exhibit adverse effects on humans and ecosystem. The current study was aimed to synthesize photocatalysts mrGO/BiOCl and mrGO/BiOCl/Ag. mrGO was coupled with BiOCl by hydrothermal method and Ag was deposited over it. The synthesized mrGO/BiOCl and mrGO/BiOCl/Ag were confirmed by Pzc analysis (5.5 and 4.4 for mrGO/BiOCl and mrGO/BiOCl/Ag, respectively), surface area analysis (380 m² g^-1, 227.7 m² g^-1, 220 m² g^-1 for mrGO, mrGO/BiOCl and mrGO/BiOCl/Ag respectively), elemental analysis (Ag, O, Bi, Fe), surface morphology (rough ball like sphere of mrGO/BiOCl and cubic Ag nanoparticles in mrGO/BiOCl/Ag), functional groups and band gap (Eg) determination. The Eg was determined using Kubelka-Munk equation as 3.5 and 2.8 eV for mrGO/BiOCl and mrGO/BiOCl/Ag respectively. During the adsorption study, the best experimental conditions for various operating parameters such as pH (2), contact time (5 min for mrGO/BiOCl and 10 min for mrGO/BiOCl/Ag under UV irradiation), TNZ concentration (18 μgL^-1) and catalyst dosage (0.001 g) were achieved. Kinetic study revealed that both composites followed pseudo second order kinetics (R² = 0.9979 and 0.9986, respectively). Data of rGO/BiOCl was fitted to Freundlich adsorption model (R² = 0.9687) and rGO/BiOCl/Ag fitted to Langmuir adsorption model (R² = 0.9994). Moreover, thermodynamic parameters confirmed that a photodegradation phenomenon was spontaneous and exothermic. The results confirmed that rGO/BiOCl and rGO/BiOCl/Ag are appropriate composites for TNZ removal from the aqueous environment with removal efficiency of 97 and 24%, respectively.

An ultra-sensitive rifampicin electrochemical sensor based on Fe3O4 nanoparticles anchored Multiwalled Carbon nanotube modified glassy carbon electrode

This study aimed to guide future sensor studies against other pharmaceutical drugs by synthesizing Fe₃O₄NPs@MWCNT metallic nanoparticles (NPs). Side damage caused by excessive accumulation of tuberculosis drugs in the body can cause clots in the organs, and cause serious damage such as heart attack and respiratory failure, and threaten human life. Therefore, the development of sensors sensitive to various antibiotics in this study is important for human health. In this study, the sensitivity of Fe₃O₄ NPs to tuberculosis drug (rifampicin) was evaluated by catalytic reaction using bare/GCE, MWCNT/GCE, and Fe₃O₄NPs@MWCNT/GCE electrodes. First of all, Fe₃O₄ NPs were successfully synthesized for the study and MWCNT/GCE and Fe₃O₄ NPs@MWCNT/GCE electrodes were formed with the modification of the MWCNT support material. It was observed that the Fe₃O₄ NPs@MWCNT/GCE electrode gave the highest signal against the other electrodes. The morphological structure of Fe₃O₄ NPs was determined by various characterization techniques such as Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transmission Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), and X-ray differential (XRD) and the obtained NPs were used for sensor studies, and it was observed that the current intensity increased as the scanning speed of each electrode increased in CV and DPV measurements. The average size of Fe₃O₄ NPs was found to be 7.32 ± 3.2 nm. Anodic current peaks occurred in the linear range of 2-25 μM. According to the results obtained from the measurements, the limit of detection (LOD) value was calculated as 0.64 μM limit of quantification (LOQ) 1.92 μM.

The Biomass of Pig-Blood-Derived Carbon as a Novel Electrode Material for Hydrogen Peroxide Electrochemical Sensing

In the work, a pig-blood-derived mesoporous carbon (BC) was prepared as a novel Fe-N-C material for the electrochemical sensor to detect hydrogen peroxide. Because of the unique nanostructure of Fe-BCs with rough surface structure, hierarchical pores, and high graphitization degree, the Fe-BCs, as a kind of advanced electrode material, exhibited remarkable performance in electrocatalysis. The sensor based on Fe-BCs exhibited an extra-long range from c and a detection limit of 0.046 μM (S/N = 3). The synthesis of low-cost, advanced carbon-based electrode materials from environmentally friendly pig blood for electrochemical sensor construction is a promising approach.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of europium doped BPO4 nanoparticles; a new approach for Zn2+ (aq) detection

In this work, europium ion was doped into boron phosphate nanoparticles (BPO₄) using an ultrasonic method followed by the calcination process. The nanoparticles were characterized by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Doping of europium ion into the BPO₄ host crystal was proved by cell volume calculation from XRD patterns, the shift in Raman spectra, and photoluminescence properties. In addition, the europium doped boron phosphate (BPE) as a fluorescence sensor for the quantification of Zn²⁺ cation was studied. The obtained results showed the enhancement and shift of the photoluminescence peak from 292 to 340 nm. The sensor's selectivity toward this ion was verified in the presence of a variety of common interfering cations. Surprisingly, BPE revealed excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Zn²⁺ in the presence of Pb²⁺, Na⁺, Fe²⁺, Al³⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Cu²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Mn²⁺, Cd²⁺, Hg²⁺, Ba²⁺ and Fe³⁺ cations. The fluorescence response was linearly proportional to the Zn²⁺concentration. After the addition of trace amounts of Zn²⁺ ions into the aqueous solution, a significant enhancement of fluorescence emission occurred with the detection limit of 0.3 μM.

First principles study of optoelectronic and photocatalytic performance of novel transition metal dipnictide XP2 (X = Ti, Zr, Hf) monolayers

Low cost and highly efficient two dimensional materials as photocatalysts are gaining much attention to utilize solar energy for water splitting and produce hydrogen fuel as an alternative to deal with the energy crisis and reduce environmental hazards. First principles calculations are performed to investigate the electronic, optical and photocatalytic properties of novel two dimensional transition metal dipnictide XP₂ (X = Ti, Zr, Hf) monolayers. The studied single layer XP₂ is found to be dynamically and thermally stable. TiP₂, ZrP₂ and HfP₂ systems exhibit semiconducting nature with moderate indirect band gap values of 1.72 eV, 1.43 eV and 2.02 eV, respectively. The solar light absorption is found to be in energy range of 1.65–3.3 eV. All three XP₂ systems (at pH = 7) and the HfP₂ monolayer (at pH = 0) that straddle the redox potentials, are promising candidates for the water splitting reaction. These findings enrich the two dimensional family and provide a platform to design novel devices for emerging optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications.
