Abstract
Introduction To date, concrete recommendations for physical activity in psychiatric treatments are limited. Thus, we evaluated knowledge, barriers and beliefs associated with exercise prescription of mental health professionals (MHP) to people with mental illnesses. We aimed to identify patients' barriers to exercise participation and to work out options addressing these barriers. Methods In our cross-sectional and questionnaire-based investigation, we recruited medical, nursing and therapeutic staff and patients of a psychiatric clinic by email and personal contact. Questionnaires contained the German versions of The Exercise in Mental Illness Questionnaire (EMIQ-G) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ). Results We included 100 MHP and 100 patients. MHP had significantly more knowledge regarding positive effects of exercise on general health than patients. Exercise was prescribed mostly (48.4%) or always (37.9%) by MHP. The data showed missing education in exercise prescriptions and different recommendation behavior. Male patients seemed to experience exercise more often as a positive distraction and had lower physical health barriers than females. Discussion Physical activity needs to be more integrated in psychiatric treatments. Some strategies as educating MHP and patients regarding potential benefits of exercise via psychoeducative brochures and adapting recommendations to individual symptoms could improve exercise behavior in psychiatric patients.

Abstract
Patients with psychotic disorders frequently report oral health problems, while mental health nurses (MHNs) seem not to be fully aware of these problems and the risk factors. Therefore, this study aimed to develop supportive tools for MHNs regarding oral health to increase sensitisation among MHNs and provide MHNs with the knowledge to recognise (potential) oral health problems in patients with a psychotic disorder. We used a human-centred design in which the user, MHNs and experts by experience were placed at the centre of the research process. Problems and needs in MHNs working with patients with a psychotic disorder were addressed. To identify key issues of problems as well as needs in terms of resources, we started with focus groups (n = 9). We analysed the data thematically based on the context of patients and MHNs in practice regarding oral health, preferred oral health tools focused on MHNs, and the intended outcomes of tools. A multi-criteria decision matrix was developed and analysed (n = 9) to identify the most optimal and viable solution based on established criteria and issues that are prevalent in the work of MHNs. The most promising result was the development of a brochure with an awareness screener. The brochure with the awareness screener was developed as a low-fidelity prototype for MHNs regarding oral health in patients with a psychotic disorder based on the latest scientific evidence. After testing it, the feasibility was tested through semi-structured interviews (n = 19). MHNs and experts by experience were satisfied with the tool and provided recommendations for adjustments to the content. Significant augmentations to the brochure included a clinical lesson and a toothbrush with toothpaste for patients. We can conclude that a brochure with an awareness screener is feasible for MHNs. Future steps aiming to further refine and optimise care processes for oral health tools in MHNs should take refining eligibility criteria for psychiatric populations and the language level of the target group of a tool into account.

Abstract
Despite the potential and opportunity for nurses in mental health settings to deliver comprehensive care to individuals with severe mental illnesses, existing evidence indicates inadequacy in providing physical health care. To understand this gap, we examined the mental health nurse's attitudes, practices, training needs, and barriers toward physical healthcare of individuals with severe mental illness and explored the associated socio-demographic differences. All mental health nurses working in an apex mental health care center in India were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire, which included a socio-demographic profile and the Physical Health Attitude Scale (PHASe). Overall, the nurses held positive attitudes, with items related to smoking and confidence toward physical health care delivery showing more positive ratings than those items related to attitude and perceived barriers. Lack of motivation from patients and nurse's workload in provision of psychiatric care were perceived as major barriers. Nurses with lesser years of experience had a slightly more positive attitude. The findings have important implications for mental health nursing practice and training toward strengthening holistic nursing care for individuals with severe mental illness, specifically in countries with limited resources.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clients with severe mental illness (SMI) have overall poor physical health. SMI reduces life expectancy by 5-17 years, primarily due to physical comorbidity linked to cardiometabolic risks that are mainly driven by unhealthy lifestyle behaviours. To improve physical health in clients with SMI, key elements are systematic somatic screening and lifestyle promotion. The nurse-led GILL eHealth was developed for somatic screening and the implementation of lifestyle activities in clients with SMI. Aims of this study are to evaluate the effectiveness of the GILL eHealth intervention in clients with SMI compared to usual care, and to evaluate the implementation process, and the experiences of clients and healthcare providers with GILL eHealth. METHODS The GILL study encompasses a cluster-randomised controlled trial in approximately 20 mental health care facilities in the Netherlands. The randomisation takes place at the team level, assigning clients to the eHealth intervention or the usual care group. The GILL eHealth intervention consists of two complementary modules for somatic screening and lifestyle promotion, resulting in personalised somatic treatment and lifestyle plans. Trained mental health nurses and nurse practitioners will implement the intervention within the multidisciplinary treatment context, and will guide and support the participants in promoting their physical health, including cardiometabolic risk management. Usual care includes treatment as currently delivered, with national guidelines as frame of reference. We aim to include 258 clients with SMI and a BMI of 27 or higher. Primary outcome is the metabolic syndrome severity score. Secondary outcomes are physical health measurements and participants' reports on physical activity, perceived lifestyle behaviours, quality of life, recovery, psychosocial functioning, and health-related self-efficacy. Measurements will be completed at baseline and at 6 and 12 months. A qualitative process evaluation will be conducted alongside, to evaluate the process of implementation and the experiences of clients and healthcare professionals with GILL eHealth. DISCUSSION The GILL eHealth intervention is expected to be more effective than usual care in improving physical health and lifestyle behaviours among clients with SMI. It will also provide important information on implementation of GILL eHealth in mental health care. If proven effective, GILL eHealth offers a clinically useful tool to improve physical health and lifestyle behaviours. Abstract
In mental health, oral health is often given little attention. Mental health nurses (MHNs) are professionally the appropriate target group to support maintaining and increasing oral health. We aimed to develop and validate personas that reflect the attitudes and needs of MHNs regarding oral health in patients with a psychotic disorder. We used a human-centered design with contextual interviews (n = 10) to address the key issues of the problems and needs of MHNs working with patients with a psychotic disorder. We analyzed the data thematically and reflected on insights into unique personas, which were then validated by conducting semi-structured interviews (n = 19) and member checking. Four personas were found based on attitudes and perspectives, barriers, needs, suggestions for interventions, and site conditions regarding practicing oral care in this patient group. Our findings were as follows: the attitudes and perspectives differed from not feeling any responsibility to a holistic obligation, including oral health; suggestions for interventions for MHNs ranged from interventions focusing on improving skills and knowledge to using practical tools; most MHNs recognized themselves within a persona that had a holistic obligation that included oral health; in addition, the MHNs indicated that they considered the issue of oral health in this patient group important, but, in practice, took little responsibility for that role. These findings suggest that a toolkit with interventions for MHNs that are tailored to the personas that emerged from our research should be developed by MHNs in co-creation with designers. The differences between the perceived role and MHNs' practice in oral health highlighted the need for role clarification and professional leadership of MHNs regarding oral health, which should be considered when developing interventions.

Abstract
Background: People living with mental health disorders are at increased risk for developing obesity due to poor diet, physical inactivity, and antipsychotic medications. In the United States, the obesity rate is 36% in the general population and more than 50% for people living with mental health disorders. Although mental health clinicians concentrate on managing psychiatric disorders, they seldom recognize the gradual increase in body mass index of their patients. The result is a disconnection between the clinical management of psychiatric disorders and the medical management of obesity. Purpose: This study assessed the effectiveness of an evidence-based education program for improving the obesity management practices of mental health clinicians caring for residents at a state psychiatric hospital. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study design with a pretest and posttest evaluation. Convenience sampling was used to recruit mental health professionals, or clinicians, at a large psychiatric hospital in the Southern region of the United States. Data was collected with the Advising and Treating Overweight and Obese Patient questionnaire (17 items). Data analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings were reported in accordance with the TREND and GREET guidelines. Results: The education program was completed by 50 MHCs. The pretest indicated that 76% of MHCs were not involved in helping obese residents manage their weight, but the posttest indicated 90% were involved. There was a significant increase in MHC knowledge about obesity management and reported actions 90-days after the program. MHCs were unable to arrange follow-up visits for residents, a task not directly within their control. Conclusions: Mental health clinicians reported increased knowledge and improved clinical practice after an education program. Because the outcomes were reported at 90-days after the program, further research needs to evaluate the longitudinal impact of this type of program, where the reported behaviors are correlated to process and clinical outcome measures for obesity.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: The quality of life (QoL) of people with severe mental illness (SMI) is a growing international concern. Many earlier studies report the determinants and correlates of QoL and functioning in people with SMI in Western countries. The QoL and functioning of Asian inpatients with SMI are largely unknown, particularly at the point where they have been assessed as being ready for hospital discharge. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Physical health, social functioning and community living skills, and negative symptoms are important areas of concern immediately pre-discharge. Social relationship related QoL, overall symptoms, unemployment, education level, living situation, physical illness and treatment duration predict functioning levels. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Mental health nurses should consider interventions beyond the traditional focus on psychopathology to improve functioning outcomes in people with SMI recently discharged from hospital. Inpatient services should utilise the opportunity to monitor and address physical health problems before discharge from inpatient care. Abstract Introduction There is a lack of evidence on quality of life (QoL) and functioning in Asian people with severe mental illness (SMI) immediately prior to hospital discharge. This information could have major implications for treatment. Aim To profile perceived quality of life, symptom severity and level of functioning among people with SMI. Methods A cross-sectional study involving 347 adult inpatients with SMI. QoL (WHO Quality of Life - Brief Form), symptom severity (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale) and level of functioning (Specific Level of Functioning) were measured immediately pre-discharge. Results Participants reported low social relationship-related QOL. Weak correlations were found between functioning, QoL and symptoms. Regression analysis identified the social relationship QoL domain, employment status, education level, living situation, physical illnesses, overall symptoms and the duration of receiving psychiatric services were statistically significant predictors of functioning levels. Discussion The findings may highlight a need for interventions beyond the traditional emphasis on psychiatric symptoms in order to improve functioning following an inpatient admission. Implications for practice Interventions to improve functioning in recently discharged people with SMI may need to be specifically designed to improve patients' social relationships, support return to employment and minimise the risk of physical illness.

Abstract
People living with a severe mental illness experience a life expectancy gap compared to the rest of the population that is largely driven by preventable cardiovascular diseases stemming from lifestyle factors, and the side effects of psychotropic medications. Mental health nurses are well positioned to help address the gap using lifestyle interventions. However, many nurses don't prioritise delivering such care, or lack the skills and confidence to implement these strategies. This study used a mixed method approach to determine the effectiveness of 2-day metabolic workshops that aimed to provide nurses with the skills to provide lifestyle interventions. The quantitative component compares pre and post measures of attitudes, confidence, knowledge and perceived barriers of providing metabolic care using a validated tool (M-BACK) and the qualitative component to elicit more details of the needs, expectations and plans of participants. Fifty-six nurse participants demonstrated statistically significant improvements in M-BACK post scores (p < 0.001), with 53 of the 56 participants (95%) achieving improved M-BACK scores. Participants identified three primary barriers to delivering metabolic care, related to individual staff members, consumers, and system issues. Prior to the course participants stated they hoped to improve their knowledge, enhance their practical skills and provide education for others. Following completion of the course participants planned to implement lifestyle education and interventions for consumers, provide education and support to other staff and integrate metabolic health care into clinical reviews and planning. This study demonstrates that education on metabolic health care can be effective in improving the attitudes, confidence, and knowledge of mental health nursing in providing metabolic health care and a decrease in the perceived barriers to delivering that care.

Abstract
A study regarding the role and uniqueness of psychiatric nursing was conducted with 94 participants from Manitoba, Canada. The primary theme of comprehensive knowledge of mental health, mental illness, and addictions was foundational for the application of the sub-themes of therapeutic relationship, holistic approach, recovery orientation, stigma reduction, and advocacy for change. Values, beliefs, and attitudes towards people with mental illness and addictions need to be instilled in psychiatric nursing students throughout their educational program to provide high quality, compassionate, and safe care. Implications for incorporation of the theme and sub-themes into psychiatric nursing curriculum are described in the paper.

Abstract
Background There has been a recent growth in research addressing mental health nurses’ routine physical healthcare knowledge and attitudes. We aimed to systematically review the empirical evidence about i) mental health nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and experiences of physical healthcare for mental health patients, and ii) the effectiveness of any interventions to improve these aspects of their work. Methods Systematic review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Multiple electronic databases were searched using comprehensive terms. Inclusion criteria: English language papers recounting empirical studies about: i) mental health nurses’ routine physical healthcare-related knowledge, skills, experience, attitudes, or training needs; and ii) the effectiveness of interventions to improve any outcome related to mental health nurses’ delivery of routine physical health care for mental health patients. Effect sizes from intervention studies were extracted or calculated where there was sufficient information. An integrative, narrative synthesis of study findings was conducted. Results Fifty-one papers covering studies from 41 unique samples including 7549 mental health nurses in 14 countries met inclusion criteria. Forty-two (82.4%) papers were published since 2010. Eleven were intervention studies; 40 were cross-sectional. Observational and qualitative studies were generally of good quality and establish a baseline picture of the issue. Intervention studies were prone to bias due to lack of randomisation and control groups but produced some large effect sizes for targeted education innovations. Comparisons of international data from studies using the Physical Health Attitudes Scale for Mental Health Nursing revealed differences across the world which may have implications for different models of student nurse preparation. Conclusions Mental health nurses’ ability and increasing enthusiasm for routine physical healthcare has been highlighted in recent years. Contemporary literature provides a base for future research which must now concentrate on determining the effectiveness of nurse preparation for providing physical health care for people with mental disorder, determining the appropriate content for such preparation, and evaluating the effectiveness both in terms of nurse and patient- related outcomes. At the same time, developments are needed which are congruent with the needs and wants of patients. Abstract
UNLABELLED WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: This paper addresses an identified gap in the international literatures related to physical health care of young people with first episode psychosis. Previous studies indicate that nurses' skills, knowledge and attitudes influence physical health outcomes for service users. The educational preparation of nurses influences their physical health care nursing practices. Nurses who have a high level of skills, knowledge and positive attitudes towards the provision of physical health care are more likely to initiate this care to young people experiencing first episode psychosis Young people experiencing first episode psychosis are more likely to have physical health comorbidities and less likely to receive treatment for them than young people in the general population. WHAT DOES THIS STUDY ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Psychiatric/mental health educated nurses are more likely to provide routine physical health care, for example checking that service users have a general practitioner for health care follow-ups, while comprehensive/generalist educated nurses also consider the young person's more complex physical health care needs such as smoking cessation and sexual health. The length of nurses' employment in mental health did not have any significant influence on their physical health care practices to young people. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Nurses working in the mental health setting provide physical health care to young people experiencing first episode psychosis, so it is important to determine if their educational preparation affects their physical health care practices. Provision of professional education opportunities and resources will enable nurses to improve their knowledge, skills and increase their awareness of the importance of providing comprehensive physical health care to young people experiencing first episode psychosis. Education providers need to emphasize the importance of providing physical health care to young people as part of mental health content in undergraduate nursing curricula. ABSTRACT Background Registered nurses working in the area of mental health complete either a psychiatric/mental health or comprehensive/generalist nursing program, and their education preparation influences their physical health care nursing practices. The differences in educational preparation may be a contributory factor to nurses' delivery of physical health care to young people experiencing first episode psychosis. This paper addresses an identified gap in nursing practices related to physical health care of young mental health service users. Aim To examine the relationship between the educational preparation of nurses and attitudes, confidence level, perceived barriers and physical health care nursing practices. Method A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2015 with 207 nurses using the modified Physical Health Attitude Scale for Mental Health Nurses (PHASe). Results Comprehensive/generalist prepared nurses were more likely to provide education on heart disease prevention and sexual health and support young people to stop cigarette smoking than psychiatric/mental health nurses. However, as the length of service progresses, the propensity for psychiatric/mental health nurses to be involve in smoking cessation increases. Implication for practice It is important to identify how nurses' educational preparation affects their nursing practices so as to address the gaps in their physical health literacy.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT Individuals with mental illness have significantly higher mortality and morbidity than the general population due to physical illnesses. Mental health nurses play a key role in providing care for common physical problems and protecting and promoting healthy lifestyles. Little is known from previous studies in the international literature about the attitudes, behaviours and thoughts of mental health nurses on providing physical health care. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO THE EXISTING KNOWLEDGE Mental health nurses mostly focus on the existing physical health problems of individuals with mental illness. However, mental health nurses do not include practices of disease prevention and physical health promotion for individuals with mental illness. The desire to see positive changes in individuals with mental illness, receiving positive feedback, feeling useful and happy, and feeling satisfied with their profession motivate mental health nurses in terms of providing physical health care. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The knowledge and skill required of mental health nurses to provide physical health care need to be increased. Institutions should employ expert nurses who are able to guide mental health nurses to provide physical health care. It is important to provide adequate physical infrastructure and human resources to provide better physical health care in mental health services. ABSTRACT Background Mental health nurses play an important role in improving the physical health of individuals with mental illnesses. However, there are limited studies of their attitudes and practices about physical health. Therefore, there is a need for qualitative studies to clarify the issue. AIM The aim of this study was to determine mental health nurses' opinions about physical health care for individuals with mental illness. METHODS This study was carried out in Turkey. A qualitative descriptive approach was taken in the study. The sample consisted of twelve mental health nurses selected by purposeful sampling. In-depth interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview format. A thematic analysis was used to evaluate the interviews. RESULTS Four main themes were determined. (1) The barriers to physical healthcare theme included barriers related to patients, illness and treatment, barriers related to patients' caregivers, barriers related to health professionals and barriers related to the healthcare system. (2) The physical healthcare practices theme included common physical health problems and current nursing practices. (3) Motivators theme included the desire to see positive changes in a patient, receiving positive feedback, feeling useful and happy, having a sense of conscience and feeling satisfied with their profession. (4) The needs for better physical healthcare theme included the nurses' recommendations for better physical health care. CONCLUSION Mental health nurses believe that the physical health care provided to individuals with mental illness is not adequate. Many barriers to providing care for physical health, such as having psychiatric symptoms that are not seen as a priority by patients and health personnel, were determined. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Mental health nurses should integrate physical healthcare practices into their routine care. In addition, mental health nurses' knowledge and skills about physical health care should be improved.

Abstract
People with severe mental illness (SMI) have considerable unmet physical health needs and an increased risk of early mortality. This cross-sectional survey utilized the Physical Health Attitude Scale (PHASe) to examine the attitudes, practices, and training needs of nurses towards physical health care of people with SMI in three Asian countries (Hong Kong, Japan, Qatar). Cross-country differences were explored and linear regression was used to investigate if nurses’ attitudes and confidence were associated with their level of involvement in physical health care. A total of 481 questionnaires were returned. Hong Kong nurses were less involved in physical health care than those from Japan and Qatar. Nurses’ attitudes and confidence were significant predictors of their participation in managing physical health. Compared with western countries, more nurses in this study felt that mental illness was a barrier to improving physical health. Three-quarters reported that they needed additional training in promoting cardiometabolic health. The perceived need for additional training in physical health care was held by Mental Health Nurses (MHN) irrespective of their type of nursing registration and nationality. Nurse educators and service providers should reconsider the physical health care training requirements of nurses working in mental health settings in order to improve the physical health of people with SMI.

Abstract
Background Addressing the burden of poor physical health and the subsequent gap in life expectancy experienced by people with mental illness is a major priority in mental health services. To equip mental health staff with the competence to deliver evidence-based interventions, targeted staff training regarding metabolic health is required. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of staff training regarding metabolic health, we aimed to develop a succinct measure to determine the barriers, attitudes, confidence, and knowledge of health practitioners through the development and test–retest reliability of the Metabolic-Barriers, Attitudes, Confidence, and Knowledge Questionnaire (M-BACK). Methods The M-BACK questionnaire was developed to evaluate the impact of specialized training in metabolic health care for mental health nurses. Content of the M-BACK was developed from a literature review and refined by an expert review panel and validated via a piloting process. To determine the test–retest reliability of the M-BACK, 31 nursing students recruited from the University of Notre Dame, Sydney completed the questionnaire on two separate occasions, 7 days apart. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated for the total score, as well as each of the four domains. Results Pilot testing was undertaken with a sample of 106 mental health nurses with a mean age 48.2, ranging from 24 to 63 years of age, who participated in six training courses. Questionnaire development resulted in a 16-item instrument, with each item is scored on a five-point Likert scale ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree.” Test–retest reliability of the M-BACK was completed by 30 of 31 nursing students recruited, ICCs ranged from 0.62 to 0.96. Conclusion The M-BACK is a reliable measure of the key elements of practitioner perceptions of barriers, and their knowledge, attitudes, and confidence regarding metabolic monitoring in people with mental illness. It can be used to assess the effectiveness of interventions aimed at increasing uptake of metabolic monitoring, a key component of programs to reduce the life expectancy gap in people living with severe mental illness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excess mortality among people with severe mental illness (SMI) is largely attributed to co-morbid physical illness. Improving the physical health of this population is critically important; however, physical health monitoring among people with SMI is often inadequate. AIMS This study aimed to facilitate an enhanced understanding of barriers to successfully attend to clients' physical health in mental health settings, through exploring care coordinators' views and experiences regarding their ability to monitor physical health in clients with SMI (specifically, psychosis). METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven care coordinators from a South East London (UK) community mental health team. Data were analysed using thematic analysis principles. RESULTS Three themes were identified in these data, capturing (1) how care coordinators viewed the professional roles of other clinical staff and themselves, (2) views on barriers to the provision of physical healthcare and (3) factors that motivated care coordinators to attend to clients' physical health. CONCLUSION Our findings can inform efforts to implement physical healthcare interventions within mental health settings. Such insights are timely, as academic literature and guidelines regarding clinical practice increasingly promote the value of integrated provision of mental and physical healthcare.

Abstract
Patients with mental illnesses are at high risk for physical disorders and death. The aim of this study is to describe mental health nurses' attitudes and practice toward physical health care for patients with mental illnesses. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used to collect data using self- reported questionnaire from 202 mental health nurses working in mental health settings in Jordan. The study adopted translated version of Robson and Haddad Physical Health Attitudes Scale to the Arabic language. There was significant positive correlation between the participants' positive attitudes and their current practice (r = .388, p = .000), mental health nurses who have more positive attitudes regarding physical health care involved physical health care more in their current practice. Mental health nurses' attitudes affect the quality of care provided to patients with mental illnesses. The results provide implications for practice, education, and research.

Abstract
Abstract The objective of this study was to review the scientific literature addressing educational actions related to the training of health professionals in sexuality between 2003 and 2013. The results obtained show that college seniors, recent college graduates, or those working in hospitals and other health care facilities are not adequately prepared to meet patients' needs regarding sexuality. Several studies have shown improvement in the health practitioners' ability to deal with patients' sexuality issues after participating in training programs in sexuality, regardless of the course load. According to the articles reviewed, in order to improve the performance and comfort level of health practitioners to deal with patients' sexuality concerns, investments in educational actions are necessary.

Abstract
This qualitative study explored undergraduate nursing students' experiences of an integrated psychiatric nursing curriculum in Seoul, Korea. Thirteen college students from the nursing school participated in focus-group interviews; the data were analyzed using content analysis. Four themes were derived: being confused by uncertainty, struggling to gain confidence, realizing humanity from stigma, and being motivated by role models. A conceptual model of psychiatric nursing education was developed based on these themes to explain the students' developmental process from student nurse to psychiatric nurse. Psychiatric nurse educators must understand students' learning process to facilitate their professional role identification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with severe mental illness have poorer physical health, experience disparities in physical health care, and lead significantly shorter lives, compared to the general population. Routine metabolic monitoring is proposed as a method of identifying risk factors for metabolic abnormalities. Efforts to date suggest routine metabolic monitoring is both incomplete and ad-hoc, however. This present study reports on the recent implementation of a routine metabolic monitoring form at a mental health service in regional Australia. METHODS A retrospective file audit was undertaken on 721 consumers with electronic health records at the mental health service. Descriptive statistics were used to report the frequency of use of the metabolic monitoring form and the range of metabolic parameters that had been recorded. RESULTS Consumers had an average age of 41.4 years (SD = 14.6), over half were male (58.4%), and the most common psychiatric diagnosis was schizophrenia (42.3%). The metabolic monitoring forms of 36% of consumers contained data. Measurements were most commonly recorded for weight (87.4% of forms), height (85.4%), blood pressure (83.5%), and body mass index (73.6%). Data were less frequently recorded for lipids (cholesterol, 56.3%; low density lipoprotein, 48.7%; high density lipoprotein, 51.7%; triglycerides, 55.2%), liver function (alanine aminotransferase, 66.3%; aspartate aminotransferase, 65.5%; gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, 64.8%), renal function (urea, 66.3%; creatinine, 65.9%), fasting blood glucose (60.2%), and waist circumference (54.4%). CONCLUSIONS The metabolic monitoring forms in consumer electronic health records are not utilised in a manner that maximises their potential. The extent of the missing data suggests that the metabolic health of most consumers may not have been adequately monitored. Addressing the possible reasons for the low completion rate has the potential to improve the provision of physical health care for people with mental illness.

Abstract
The physical health of people with serious mental illness (SMI) has become a focal area of research. The aim of the present study was to ascertain the attention and distribution of research from within Australia on physical illness and SMI co-occurrence, and to identify gaps. A scoping review of peer-reviewed research literature from Australia, published between January 2000 and March 2014, was undertaken through an electronic literature search and coding of papers to chart trends. Four trends are highlighted: (i) an almost threefold increase in publications per year from 2000-2006 to 2007-2013; (ii) a steady release of literature reviews, especially from 2010; (iii) health-related behaviours, smoking, integrated-care programmes, and antipsychotic side-effects as the most common topics presented; and (iv) paucity of randomized, controlled trials on integrated-care models. Despite a marked increase in research attention to poorer physical health, there remains a large gap between research and the scale of the problem previously identified. More papers were descriptive or reviews, rather than evaluations of interventions. To foster more research, 12 research gaps are outlined. Addressing these gaps will facilitate the reduction of inequalities in physical health for people with SMI. Mental health nurses are well placed to lead multidisciplinary, consumer-informed research in this area.

Abstract
People with serious mental illness experience premature death due to higher rates of cardiometabolic conditions (e.g. cardiovascular disease, diabetes) than the general population. Mental health services often do not provide sufficient cardiometabolic clinical care to address these risks. The cardiometabolic health nurse (CHN) role has been suggested as a strategy for ensuring integrated care is provided and sustained. The views of nurses in mental health would be essential in informing the viability and development for this initiative. This paper presents the findings of open-ended comments from a cross-sectional online survey of nurses working in mental health in Australia (n = 643) eliciting views about the possible introduction of the cardiometabolic nurse. Thematic analysis was undertaken, of 133 open comments on this topic. The findings suggest that nurses see the specialist role as suitable and valuable for mental health services. Some nurses voiced concern about specialisation leading to fragmentation (e.g. in responsibilities for physical health, division of mental and physical health care, and less emphasis on equipping all nurses with comprehensive care skills), especially for settings where generalist nursing was seen as already available. The findings suggest this role is viewed favourably by nurses, provided that it is consistent with holistic and comprehensive care. Empirical research is needed to see whether this role increases holism (as valued by consumers and nurses) and cardiometabolic outcomes.

Abstract
ACCESSIBLE SUMMARY ● People with severe mental illnesses (SMIs) suffer from health inequities and have a higher mortality rate, resulting from a sedentary lifestyle and a high prevalence of undiagnosed and untreated metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors. Cognitive deficits due to SMI symptoms may affect their ability to engage in a healthier lifestyle. ● Programmes for a healthier lifestyle with physical activity components may improve mental and physical health for people with SMIs. In order to increase physical activity among this population, a new approach was developed as an integrated part of daily care. ● This programme included a cognitive support in the shape of cognitive adaptation training (CAT) in order to address cognitive impairments, and provided education and individualized support in natural nursing environments to help individuals engage in physical activity (PHYS) and dietary changes (PHYS/CAT). ABSTRACT People with severe mental illness (SMIs) are more prone to physical illnesses, increased mortality and cognitive impairments, all of which negatively influence their daily lives. Physical activity (PHYS) programmes have helped alleviate SMI. LIFEHOPE is an ongoing research project with the purpose of developing a sustainable lifestyle intervention for physical and mental health. PHYS/cognitive adaptation training (CAT) is a newly created lifestyle intervention that provides group education and is based on CAT. It provides individualized support for PHYS and dietary change in a natural nursing environment. The aim of this study was to obtain further knowledge for developing a sustainable lifestyle programme by exploring psychiatric clients' experiences with PHYS and lifestyle habits, which we did by interviewing a local reference group, community mental healthcare users and community mental healthcare workers. Then, we developed a lifestyle programme for people with SMI using information obtained from these focus group interviews. Our results suggest that there is a need for support and education, as well as active interventions, in carrying out PHYS and dietary changes among people with SMIs, and the PHYS/CAT may be a useful strategy.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this project was to develop, deliver, and evaluate a brief evidenced-based education package to enhance physical health literacy in mental health nurses. DESIGN AND METHODS Pre- and post-test survey of knowledge of physical health in serious mental illness, satisfaction with the workshop, and applicability to practice. FINDINGS Participants were motivated to attend and complete the questions. There was statistically significant knowledge gain immediately post workshop and participants described satisfaction with the content and a willingness to apply learning from the session to their practice. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS If such workshops are provided as a collaborative and relatively inexpensive way of education, they can contribute to building the capacity of mental health nurses to be literate in physical health interventions.

Abstract
This paper presents the pre- and post-test results of the outcomes of a workshop designed to increase learning disability and mental health nurses' knowledge and skill to undertake interventions for service users at risk of, or with a diagnosis of, type 2 diabetes. Health literacy is also discussed as a way of explaining why such nurses may lack expertise in physical health care. Findings from the workshop show that learning disability and mental health nurses have the motivation to increase their health literacy (skills and knowledge) in diabetes care. The potential of such workshops, and how organisations looking forward to the future can build health literacy, is discussed.
