Effect of continuous workshop training of the helping babies breathe program on the retention of midwives' knowledge and skills: A clinical trial study

AIM

To investigate the impact of ongoing workshop training of the "Helping Babies Breathe" program on the durability of midwives' knowledge and skills.

BACKGROUND

Implementing the Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) program is crucial as a simple protocol for neonatal resuscitation in low-resource healthcare settings to decrease the rate of asphyxia and perinatal mortality by the initial healthcare providers. In addition to training in this program, it is also essential to guarantee the retention of the acquired knowledge and skills.

DESIGN

A quasi-experimental clinical trial study with a single-group, pre-test-and-post-test design.

METHODS

This study was conducted throughout the year 2022, with a sample size of 61 midwives selected through a census sampling from those working in the delivery and operating rooms of X Hospital in x City. The midwives participated in 3-hour workshops. This study was performed in two stages: intervention and follow-up. The evaluation Instruments included the HBB educational package, which consisted of a questionnaire and 3 Objective Structured Clinical Exams. During the intervention phase, the HBB program training was conducted through a series of workshops held at four different time points over a span of six months. In the follow-up stage, the learners were not provided with any further training. The evaluation was done immediately after the initial training workshop of the HBB program, at the end of the final workshop in the sixth month and at the end of the follow-up period.

RESULTS

The mean knowledge score of the baseline, at six months and at twelve months after the initial workshop were documented as (17 SD1.2), (17.79 SD 0.4) and (17.73 SD 0.5), respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the mean knowledge scores between the baseline and the six and twelve months (P<0.05), but no statistically significant difference was observed between six and twelve months (P>0.05). The mean skill scores showed a significant improvement and were maintained after six months compared with the initial assessment (P<0.05); however, there was a significant decrease in skill score twelve months later, in comparison to both the initial assessment and the first six months (P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Healthcare workers can maintain their knowledge and skills by participating in ongoing training workshops. However, without continuous training, their skills may diminish. Therefore, it is essential to implement training programs that emphasize regular practice and repetition to ensure knowledge and skills retention.

The effect of educational application in nursing internship clinical training on cognitive and functional skills and students' satisfaction

BACKGROUND

Clinical education plays an essential role in shaping the nursing identity and is one of the central elements in the education of nursing students. Today, with the advancement of novel technologies, utilizing mobile phone-based technologies in the education of medical sciences is inevitable. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the impact of the urology educational application on nursing students' cognitive-functional criteria and satisfaction during the internship period.

METHODS

This experimental educational intervention study was conducted during nursing students' urology internship course at Shahid Beheshti School of Nursing and Midwifery in Rasht. The data collection tools included a demographic characteristics questionnaire, cognitive skills scale, functional skills scale, and satisfaction scale (Stokes, 2001). The data were analyzed using SPSS software version 16, and a significance level was set at 0.05.

RESULTS

Out of 48 studied students, 28 (58.3%) were males. The mean age of the students was 20.34 (SD = 1.51) years. In the application group, the mean of students' cognitive skills after the intervention significantly increased by 2.33 units (95% CI: 1.73 to 2.9) (t(23) = 7.97, P < 0.001, d = 1.626). By controlling the scores before the intervention, the adjusted mean score of cognitive skills in the application group was 0.56 units (95% CI: -0.16 to 1.28) higher than the traditional group; however, this difference was not statistically significant (F(1, 45) = 2.42, P = 0.127, η2p = 0.051). There was no statistically significant difference between the mean score of students' functional skills in traditional and application groups (t(46) = 0.63, P = 0.532, d = 0.184). The total mean score of satisfaction with education in the application group was 83.0 (SD: 10.7). According to the values ​​of the quartiles, 75% of the students scored higher than 75.9, 50% scored higher than 83.9, and 25% scored higher than 91.1.

CONCLUSION

According to the results of this study, students' scores of functional and cognitive assessment and satisfaction with the application in urology clinical training were reported as favorable. Therefore, it is recommended that mobile phone-based technologies be used in students' clinical education and internships in combination with the traditional method.

Developing a Tool for Assessing the Process of Seeking Health Information: Online Think-Aloud Method

Nursing students can access massive amounts of online health data to drive cutting-edge evidence-based practice in clinical placement, to bridge the theory-practice gap. This activity requires investigation to identify the strategies nursing students apply to evaluate online health information. Online Think-Aloud sessions enabled 14 participants to express their cognitive processes in navigating various educational resources, including online journals and databases, and determining the reliability of sources, indicating their strategies for information-seeking, which helped to create this scoring system. Easy access and user convenience were clearly the instrumental factors in this behavior, which has troubling implications for the lack of use of higher-quality resources (e.g., from peer-reviewed academic journals). The identified challenges encountered during resource access included limited skills in the critical evaluation of information credibility and reliability, signaling a requirement for improved information literacy skills. Participants acknowledged the importance of evidence-based, high-quality information, but faced numerous barriers, such as restricted access to professional and specialty databases, and a lack of academic skills training. This paper develops and critiques a Performative Tool for assessing the process of seeking health information using an online Think-Aloud method, and explores factors and strategies contributing to evidence-based health information access and utilization in clinical practice, aiming to provide insight into individuals' information-seeking behaviors in online health contexts.

Development of an educational program for healthcare professionals who provide appearance care for patients with cancer: Feasibility study of an e-learning program

This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and utility of an e-learning training program to improve healthcare professionals' knowledge about providing appearance care to patients with cancer. Healthcare professionals who provide appearance support were invited to participate voluntarily and complete a survey before and after the program. Participation request letters were distributed to 133 individuals, including 75 from four facilities invited via professional connections, and agreed to participate in the study and 58 participated in the National Cancer Center's appearance care training and indicated an interest in participating in the study. The 100 participants (75.2%) included 96 females, with an average age of 40.5 years. The participants reported high levels of satisfaction with the program, where more than 90% responded "satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" and eager to use the content they learned in the program when they returned to their workplaces. However, the participants identified several barriers to applying their newly acquired knowledge including lack of knowledge (about 80%). Participant knowledge scores about appearance support were significantly higher after program participation. The survey results indicated the high feasibility of the e-learning program through improved knowledge about appearance care and high satisfaction with the program. The program needs further improvements for its practical utility.

Asynchronous e-learning with technology-enabled and enhanced training for continuing education of nurses: a scoping review

BACKGROUND

Asynchronous e-learning has become the mainstream choice since the transformation of learning formats by the coronavirus disease-19 pandemic. This scoping review aimed to examine the technologies used in asynchronous e-learning for the continuing education of clinical nurses and their modes of delivery and effectiveness.

METHODS

This scoping review covered the period between 2011 and 2023. Six databases were searched for relevant studies following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) protocol.

RESULTS

Sixty articles met the inclusion criteria. There was a noticeable trend toward using diverse technology-enabled and enhanced training (TEET) options after 2017. The enabling technological approaches, such as interactive online modules (25 articles) and video modules (25 articles), are described in the articles. The most commonly used enhancing technologies were scenario-based learning (nine articles), resource access (eight articles), computer simulation or virtual reality (three articles), and gamification (three articles). Among the outcomes, knowledge acquisition was the most commonly examined outcome (41 articles).

CONCLUSIONS

Notably, many interactive TEET modules were used in asynchronous e-learning. There were few studies on gamification, computer simulation or virtual reality, and scenario-based learning (techniques to enhance intrinsic motivation further). However, the adoption of asynchronous e-learning with advanced TEET options is anticipated to increase in the future. Therefore, objective outcome measures are required to determine the effects of such learning methods on knowledge acquisition and behavioral changes.

Regional delivery in graduate nursing programs for students living in rural communities

Oregon has a lack of primary care providers in rural areas. To address this issue, employers have indicated they plan to hire greater numbers of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Nursing (SoN) responded to this need by developing a statewide delivery model to educate APRN students in their communities. A performance improvement work group including practice faculty, statewide academic leaders, and staff created a project charter with scope of work, timelines, and outcomes with the goal of improving the systems supporting APRN education. An initial distance APRN education delivery model emerged from this effort and was refined over the following year. Strategies were implemented to address identified challenges using small cycles of change. The final model has three main principles: being learner-centered, equitable, and sustainable. The central outcome is graduating students committed to practicing in rural and urban underserved communities to meet workforce needs in Oregon.

Designing and delivering digital learning (e-Learning) interventions in nursing and midwifery education: A systematic review of theories

AIMS /OBJECTIVES

To identify and synthesise theories that support the design and delivery of digital learning interventions in nursing and midwifery education.

BACKGROUND

A range of educational and other theories are used to support nursing and midwifery education, including when e-learning interventions are being designed and delivered. However, there is a limited understanding of how theory is applied across the wide range of digital learning interventions to inform pedagogical research and practice.

DESIGN

A systematic review.

METHODS

CINAHL, ERIC, MEDLINE and PubMed were searched using key terms. Studies were screened by independent reviewers checking the title, abstract and full text against eligibility criteria. Due to the theoretical focus of the review, critical appraisal was not undertaken. Data were extracted and synthesised using a descriptive approach.

RESULTS

Thirty-four studies were included. Twenty theories were identified from a range of scientific disciplines, with the Technology Acceptance Model and Theory of Self-Efficacy employed most often. Theoretical frameworks were used to inform and explain how the digital learning interventions were designed or implemented in nursing and midwifery education. The sample were mainly undergraduate nursing students and the digital learning interventions encompassed animation, blended approaches, general technologies, mobile, online, virtual simulation and virtual reality applications which were used mainly in university settings.

CONCLUSIONS

This systematic review found a range of theories that support the design and delivery on digital learning interventions in nursing and midwifery education. While a single theory, the Technology Acceptance Model, tended to dominate the literature, the evidence base is peppered with numerous theoretical models that need to be examined more rigorously to ascertain their utility in improving the design or implementation of digital forms of learning to improve pedagogical research and practice in nursing and midwifery.

The 6P4C model: An instructional design conceptual model for delivery of e-learning

The 6P4C conceptual model incorporates instructional design and delivery considerations through a practical set of guiding questions and heuristics. It can be applied in multiple e-learning contexts including academia, staff development and interprofessional practice environments. The model helps guide academic nurse educators in particular through the expansive options of web-based applications, digital tools and learning platforms while also helping to humanize e-learning through the 4C's; deliberate fostering of civility, communication, collaboration and community-building. These connective principles interweave the six key design and delivery considerations the 6P's which include: the participants (learners), platforms used for teaching/learning, a well-developed teaching plan, safe spaces for intellectual play, engaging and inclusive presentations and regular checking of the pulse of learners and the tools being used. By building on similar guiding frameworks including the SAMR, ADDIE and ASSURE models, the 6P4C model further supports nurse educators in designing high-impact and significant e-learning experiences.

The Use of Educational Technology in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Nursing and Midwifery Education: A Scoping Review

Technology has become integral to our personal and professional lives. Its use is increasing in healthcare, both in clinical and educational settings, with healthcare institutions and regulatory bodies recognizing that technology is ever-present. The aim of this scoping review was to examine and quantify the current evidence concerning the use of educational technologies in undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery education. This review was guided by the JBI methodology for scoping reviews. A tailored search strategy was developed with a research librarian and a number of databases were searched. A total of 19 638 literature sources were screened by three reviewers. Literature published from January 2016 to December 2020 was included and limited to the English language. The reporting of the review process is guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses for Scoping Reviews checklist. This review provides an overview of the current use of educational technologies within nursing and midwifery education; it provides a list of the technologies used, the research methodologies and designs undertaken, and the educational theories, models or frameworks considered. The review highlights the wide range of technologies in use and the paucity of studies that are guided by an educational theory, model or framework.

Research Trends in Artificial Intelligence-Associated Nursing Activities Based on a Review of Academic Studies Published From 2001 to 2020

The present study referred to the technology-based learning model to conduct a systematic review of the dimensions of nursing activities, research samples, research methods, roles of artificial intelligence, applied artificial intelligence algorithms, evaluation measure of algorithms, and research foci. Based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses procedure, this study obtained and analyzed a total of 102 high-quality artificial intelligence-associated nursing activities studies published from 2001 to 2020 in the Web of Science database. The results showed: (1) In terms of nursing activities, nursing management was explored the most, followed by nursing assessment; (2) quantitative methods were most frequently adopted in artificial intelligence-associated nursing activities studies to investigate issues related to patients, followed by nursing staff; (3) the most adopted roles of artificial intelligence in artificial intelligence-associated nursing activities studies were profiling and prediction, followed by assessment and evaluation; (4) artificial intelligence-associated nursing activities studies frequently mixed applied artificial intelligence algorithms and evaluation measure of algorithms; (5) in the dimension of research foci, most studies mainly paid attention to the design or evaluation of the artificial intelligence systems/instruments, followed by investigating the correlation and affect issues. Based on the findings, several recommendations are raised as a reference for future researchers, educators, and policy makers.

Theories informing technology enhanced learning in nursing and midwifery education: A systematic review and typological classification

BACKGROUND

Learning is a complex process involving internal cognitive processes and external stimuli from curricula, pedagogical strategies, and the learning environment. Theories are used extensively in higher education to understand the intricacies of adult learning and improve student outcomes. Nursing and midwifery education uses a range of technology enhanced learning (e-learning) approaches, some of which are underpinned by theoretical frameworks.

OBJECTIVE

Synthesise literature on theories that inform technology enhanced learning in nursing and midwifery education.

DESIGN

A systematic review.

DATA SOURCE

CINAHL, ERIC, MEDLINE and PubMed were searched for relevant studies (2000-2021). Reference lists of related literature reviews were hand searched.

REVIEW METHODS

Title and abstract, followed by full texts were screened by two reviewers independently using predefined eligibility criteria. Quality appraisal was not undertaken. Data were extracted and Merriam and Bierema's typology of adult learning theories used to categorise theories in each study.

RESULTS

Thirty-three studies were included, incorporating twenty-nine distinct learning theories from the behaviourist, cognitivist, constructivist, and social cognitivist domains, with constructivist being the most widely used. Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory and Driscoll's Constructivist Learning Theory were the most commonly reported theories. The population of learners were mainly undergraduate nursing students who used a range of online, mobile, blended or computerised learning, virtual reality, or digital forms of simulation, primarily in university settings. Theories were employed to inform the technology enhanced learning intervention or to help explain how these could improve student learning.

CONCLUSION

This review highlighted a range of theories, particularly constructivist approaches, that underpin research on technology enhanced learning in nursing education, by informing or explaining how these digital interventions support learning. More rigorous research that examines the myriad of theoretical frameworks and their effectiveness in informing and explaining technology enhanced learning is needed to justify this approach to pedagogical nursing research and practice.

Digital professionalism on social media: The opinions of undergraduate nursing students

BACKGROUND

Social media are a suite of popular online technologies that enable people to share and co-create digital content. Evidence suggests some nursing students utilise social media inappropriately but there is limited literature on nursing students' opinions of professionalism in online environments. This study aimed to examine the opinions of nursing students in relation to digital professionalism on social media.

METHOD

A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with undergraduate nursing students in the United Kingdom (n = 112). An existing self-reported questionnaire was adapted for data collection. This was distributed to adult nursing students enrolled across all four years of a Bachelor of Nursing programme. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics.

FINDINGS

Many nursing students were heavy social media users (n = 49, 44%), with Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat being the most popular applications. Nursing students were also aware of the professional nursing regulator, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, guidelines on responsible social media use (n = 48, 43%). Nursing students' responses to various digitally professional scenarios revealed agreement that posts about alcohol or sexually explicit content, along with comments about colleagues or patients were inappropriate. However, there were mixed views around taking photographs at work, with some nursing students across all four years of the degree programme perceiving this to be satisfactory behaviour.

DISCUSSION

The opinions of nursing students towards digital professionalism on social media are somewhat aligned with professional standards, although students can hold varying views on the subject. More research on how nursing students employ social media is warranted to ensure their opinions match their actual practice in online environments. It is also recommended to educate nursing students about the professional values and behaviours required on social media and how best to communicate, interact, and share information on the various online platforms, to minimise personal and organisational risk.

Voices from undergraduate students and faculty members regarding the status and challenges of baccalaureate nursing education in Myanmar: A qualitative study

OBJECTIVES

To clarify the present status and challenges of nursing education in a baccalaureate degree program in Myanmar.

DESIGN

A qualitative descriptive design using focus group interviews.

PARTICIPANTS

Undergraduate nursing students and faculty members from the University of Nursing in Myanmar.

METHODS

Focus group interviews were separately conducted for each group of undergraduate students, and junior and senior faculty members. The interview guide for the students was about their perceptions and requests regarding their nursing education. For the faculty members, the interview guide was about their current perceptions and challenges regarding nursing education. Each group interview took about 60 min.

RESULTS

Eight undergraduate students, eight junior faculty members, and six senior faculty members were eligible to participate. The undergraduate students voiced their requests for improvement in teaching methods. They described their struggles and learning process from their clinical placement experiences, as well as their distress under the present educational environment. The faculty members described their perceptions and challenges regarding inventiveness in teaching methods, challenges in conducting clinical placements, lack of educational devices and facilities, and innovation requirements in the faculty organization and system.

CONCLUSION

The present status of nursing education in a baccalaureate degree program in Myanmar reflects ongoing serious challenges in undergraduate nursing education as expressed by both undergraduate students and faculty members. Their voices echo a pressing need to implement alternative methods of nursing education for better academic outcome. Moreover, continuing education is realized as crucial for capacity building and professional development of faculty members.

Career education needs of Korean nursing students and professionals: A cross-sectional survey

BACKGROUND

The career education needs of nursing students and professionals can be met by analyzing the differences between the importance and need levels of their various career education needs, determining priorities, and developing a career education program reflecting these. This approach will enable learner-centered customized career education.

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the differences in career education needs between nursing students and professionals, determine their respective priorities, and assess changes in needs between the two survey periods.

DESIGN

Descriptive survey study.

PARTICIPANTS

The first survey (2017) included 206 nursing students and 40 nursing professionals, while the second survey (2020) included 219 nursing students and 100 nursing professionals.

METHODS

Data for the two surveys were collected through face-to-face, postal, and online questionnaire surveys. The research tool to measure career education needs was developed based on an existing tool, top queries on a website for nursing students' career education, literature review, expert opinions, and in-depth interviews with nursing students.

RESULTS

The 10 top-ranked items in Jo and Lee's model reflecting the career education needs of nursing students and professionals were as follows: workplace and social etiquette, changes in the healthcare environment and global issues, setting up my career roadmap, interpersonal and communication skills, nursing professionalism and nursing ethics, understanding the latest healthcare policies, my personality type and values, roles and duties of clinical nurses, my aptitude and interest, and nurses' healthcare. Comparing the career education needs of nursing students and professionals between the two survey periods revealed higher scores in the education category of "understanding career" in the second survey.

CONCLUSION

Nursing students' career awareness and development will be positively affected by a customized career education program based on the priority items derived from this study; such a program will help them attain nursing professionalism and enhance their occupational identity and job satisfaction.

Nursing students' emotional work and its consequences following encounters with e-patients who present reliable or unreliable information; a scenario based cross sectional survey

BACKGROUND

Hochschild's theory of emotional work explains how people evoke or suppress emotions in order to adhere to social norms. An encounter with an e-patient who presents potentially unreliable medical information from the internet can lead to caregivers undergoing emotional work. This may have a negative impact on caregivers, such as mental exhaustion or professional dissatisfaction.

OBJECTIVES

To examine nursing students' emotional work and its consequences following an encounter with e-patients who present new information from reliable or unreliable internet websites.

DESIGN

A cross sectional study.

SETTINGS

A large university in the center of Israel.

PARTICIPANTS

376 nursing students (230 Jewish, 146 Arab) of a 4-year BA program.

METHODS

The study was scenario based describing an e-patient that presents information from a reliable/unreliable website. The students were asked about the emotions the situation evokes in them based on the Emotional Work Questionnaire. In addition, the questionnaire examined the emotional work techniques (surface versus deep acting) and the impact of emotional work on the students.

RESULTS

Deep acting emotional work was the most used emotional work technique. Arab students performed more deep acting emotional work compared to Jewish students (F(1,360) = 12.57, p < 0.001). Deep acting emotion work mediated the relationship between ethnicity and the impact of emotion work ((LLCI (-0.1018), ULCI (-0.0199)).

CONCLUSIONS

The training of nursing students should allow and encourage students' legitimacy to feel and express various emotions, even when they are contrary to expectations. Sharing others' (students', clinical instructors') feelings that arise in clinical situations is an essential aspect of clinical training. This training may lead to effective emotional management in different situations and allow students to receive help and support that will enable them to develop good coping skills during their studies which will benefit them later in their professional career.

Leveraging e-Learning technology to enhance pre-service training for healthcare trainees in Ghana: evidence from a pilot project and pointers to policy reforms

BACKGROUND

E-Learning solutions are increasingly being advocated to augment existing traditional teaching and learning efforts in health training institutions. Unfortunately, these emerging technologies rarely focus on health sciences education within the context of public universities, hence the need for this study. This project evaluated experiences of healthcare trainees with a pilot e-Learning project (SMART e-Learning project) initiated in one of Ghana's public universities in 2017. The study used a mixed methods cross-sectional approach among 363 healthcare trainees. Data collection was between 17th October, 2019 to 3rd December, 2019. Data was analysed descriptively and test for variable differences done using Pearson Chi-square and Fisher's Exact for categorical variables. Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney test was used to test for differences in the Likert scale items. Additionally, rotated varimax factor analysis was performed for the health trainees' rated satisfaction factors.

RESULTS

Out of 446 respondents who consented to participate in the study, 363 responses were complete and valid, representing a response rate of 81 %. Most frequently used e-learning facilities by healthcare trainees were: writing interim assessments (IAs) (82 %) while the least used function was live chating with faculty (5 %). Challenges associated with the e-learning pilot project were: limited workspace in the pilot computer laboratory (33 %), slow internet/intranet speed (29 %) and limited capacity of teaching and ICT staff to support users (28 %).

CONCLUSIONS

There is the need to engage relevant stakeholders at the University, ministries of health and education through policy dialogues to develop statutory e-Learning guidelines for health educational institutions of higher learning to complement existing traditional teaching and learning approaches.

Nursing Faculty Experience With Online Distance Education During COVID-19 Crisis: A Qualitative Study

BACKGROUND

COVID-19 pandemic influenced education and forced universities to shift from face-to-face teaching to remote online teaching. This sudden shift in educational pedagogy provoked several challenges to educators.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to explore the first experience of nursing faculty members with online distant education (ODE) within the context of COVID-19 national curfew.

METHODS

A qualitative descriptive design guided by a phenomenological approach was used utilizing purposive sampling for exploring the experiences of fifteen nursing faculty members by two focus group discussions through Zoom.

RESULTS

Qualitative analysis, using Colaizzi's method revealed four major themes including: (1) resolving immediate reaction toward abrupt compulsory online teaching; fulfilling teaching responsibilities; managing the challenges of ODE, (2) struggling with available resources and capabilities; (3) ODE defeated geographic and time boundaries, and interrupted personal time management: yet a new learning experience; insufficiency of ODE; and (4) achieving clinical competencies and learning outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides evidence on the importance of preparing and training faculty to embrace and sustain the mastery of ODE to ensure the success of ODE. It also emphasizes the institutional and infrastructure readiness to enhance the transition from traditional teaching and learning to ODE.

Nursing informatics competences of Finnish registered nurses after national educational initiatives: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Nursing informatics competences (ie. knowledge and skills in electronic and structured documentation) have become a necessary prerequisite for nurses to carry out their professional roles. Therefore, there is a global need to integrate nursing informatics into nursing curricula. In Finland, the requirements to increase nursing informatics education were noted in eHealth strategies in 2015. However, it is not known whether these educational initiatives have succeeded in increasing nursing informatics competences of recent nursing graduates.

OBJECTIVES

To examine whether nurses who graduated after the Finnish educational initiatives have higher nursing informatics competences than nurses who graduated before the initiatives. Additionally, the associations of age, gender, work setting and geographical area with the nurses' informatics competences were examined.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

SETTINGS

The study was carried out between October-December 2018 in Finland.

PARTICIPANTS

Registered nurses who graduated before (n = 931) and after (n = 712) the 2015 educational initiatives.

METHODS

Nursing informatics competences were measured by four items: (1) terminology-based documentation, (2) patient-related digital work, (3) general IT competency and (4) electronic documentation according to structured national headings. The associations of the year of the graduation and demographic background variables with nurses' overall nursing informatics competence and also separately with four specific competence items were examined with analysis of covariance.

RESULTS

Nurses' graduation year was associated with their overall nursing informatics competence and the specific competence related to terminology-based documentation. Nurses who had graduated after the initiatives had higher competence than nurses with earlier graduation years. Associations were also found between age and work setting with the nursing informatics competences. Younger nurses and nurses working in specialised healthcare and elderly care had the highest competence.

CONCLUSIONS

The national eHealth strategies with educational initiatives seem to have affected favorably on nursing informatics education in Finnish nursing programs and have potentially led to increased nursing informatics competences of recent nursing graduates. The results of this study highlight the importance of educational policies stating the directions and objectives of education programs.

Gender differences in information and communication technology use & skills: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Even though information and communication technology (ICT) is essential for everyday life and has gained considerable attention in education and other sectors, it also carries individual differences in its use and relevant skills. This systematic review aims to examine the gender differences in ICT use and skills for learning through technology. A comprehensive search of eight journal databases and a specific selection criterion was carried out to exclude articles that match our stated exclusion criteria. We included 42 peer-reviewed empirical publications and conference proceedings published between 2006 and 2020. For a subsample of studies, we performed a small-scale meta-analysis to quantify possible gender differences in ICT use and skills. A random-effects model uncovered a small and positive, yet not significant, effect size in favor of boys (g = 0.17, 95% CI [-0.01, 0.36]). However, this finding needs to be further backed by large-scale meta-analyses, including more study samples and a broader set of ICT use and skills measures. We highlight several concerns that should be addressed and more thoroughly in collaboration with one another to better IT skills and inspire new policies to increase the quality of ICT use. The findings from this review further suggest implications and present existing research challenges and point to future research directions.

Use of an interactive multimedia e-book to improve nursing students'' sexual harassment prevention knowledge, prevention strategies, coping behavior, and learning motivation: A randomized controlled study

BACKGROUND

Nursing essentially involves working closely with patients both physically and psychologically. Nurses, particularly inexperienced nursing students, are often at great risk of sexual harassment.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effects of a clinical-based sexual harassment prevention e-book on nursing students' knowledge, prevention strategies, coping behaviors, and learning motivation.

DESIGN

A randomized, controlled, experimental study.

SETTING

Nursing Department at a private university in Taiwan.

PARTICIPANTS

Senior nursing students who had finished the required professional internship or were undergoing community nursing or psychiatric nursing internship.

METHODS

Participants were randomly allocated to intervention (e-book, n = 33) and control (video and brochure, n = 33) groups. They were asked to complete a structured questionnaire before, after, and 2 weeks after the intervention to evaluate their sexual harassment knowledge, prevention strategies, coping behaviors, and learning motivation.

RESULTS

In the posttest, the e-book group scored significantly higher in the sexual harassment prevention knowledge (p < .05), sexual harassment prevention strategy (p < .01), and ARCS motivation (p < .001) subscales than the control group, but not in the coping behavior subscale. In terms of group and time effects, knowledge, coping behavior, prevention strategy, and motivation scores were all significantly different in the first posttest (p < .001). In the second posttest, coping behavior and ARCS motivation scores remained significantly different (p < .01).

CONCLUSION

The interactive multimedia e-book effectively improved the sexual harassment prevention knowledge and competence of nursing students. This method can be employed as a supplementary material in nursing education, internship guidance, and nursing on-the-job education.

Healthcare students' mental and physical well-being during the COVID-19 lockdown and distance learning

BACKGROUND

The sudden shift into distance learning during the coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown might have impacted university students' well-being.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to investigate undergraduate healthcare university students' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and its predictors during COVID-19.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study used an online self-administered questionnaire. The study targeted undergraduate medical, dental, pharmacy, and nursing students at Jordanian universities. Data collected included demographics,12-item Short Form health survey (SF-12), students' evaluation of distance learning, Neck Disability Index (NDI), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS21), and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Descriptive analyses were conducted to summarize primary outcome measures data. Predictors of HRQoL were determined using a multiple variable regression analysis.

RESULTS

In total, 485 university students successfully completed this study with a mean age of 20.6 (±2.0). Participants' HRQoL level measured by SF-12 mean scores were 66.5 (±20.2) for physical health component and 44.8 (±21.2) for mental health component. The regression model explained 65.5% of the variation (r2 = 0.655, F = 127.8, P < 0.001) in participants' HRQoL. Factors significantly associated with HRQoL included depression, neck disability index score, stress, health self-evaluation, average of satisfaction with distance learning, IPAQ score, and weekly studying hours.

CONCLUSIONS

This study showed that healthcare students had a relatively low level of HRQoL during COVID-19 pandemic in Jordan. Academic and non-academic factors associated with HRQoL were identified and should be considered by healthcare educational institutions for better academic planning in future similar pandemics.

Expansion of undergraduate Nursing courses: distance education scenario, interests, and challenges

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the expansion of undergraduate Nursing courses in Brazil, especially those in the distance education modality.

METHODS

Exploratory, descriptive, analytical, and documentary study that used the Statistical Overview of Higher Education - Undergraduate Courses, of the Brazilian National Institute for Educational Studies and Research "Anísio Teixeira", which is part of the Ministry of Education and Culture, as a source of secondary data for the period between 2009 and 2018.

RESULTS

There was a growth in the number of undergraduate Nursing courses and new seats in the distance education modality. However, only 8.89% of these seats were occupied and 3.39% of the enrolled students completed the course, which accounted for 0.30% of the new seats.

CONCLUSION

The expansion of undergraduate Nursing courses is aligned with the general trends in higher education. This scenario exposes the interests of capital in education, which emphasizes the need for collective development of strategies to guarantee the right to education that is public, free and has social quality.

Harmonious work passion and work-related internet information seeking among nurses: The mediating role of intrinsic motivation

AIM

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between nurses' harmonious work passion and work-related internet information seeking. In doing so, we examine intrinsic motivation as an underlying mechanism of this relationship.

BACKGROUND

Nurses seek and utilize information to respond effectively to their tasks and to develop their skills and competencies. Internet consists one of the easiest and richest sources of information. Both nurses and organizations need to identify potential antecedents of work-related internet information seeking.

METHODS

Data were collected from 239 nurses and nurse assistants in a Greek University hospital and were analysed using bootstrap analysis with PROCESS macro.

RESULTS

Harmonious work passion was positively related to intrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation related positively to work-related internet information seeking. The mediating role of intrinsic motivation was also supported.

CONCLUSIONS

Nurses with harmonious work passion seek more regularly work-related information on the internet because they experience high levels of intrinsic motivation.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

Health care organizations and managers need to recruit passionate nurses and cultivate a workplace culture that will trigger higher levels of harmonious work passion. Recruitment tools and methods such as interviews, situational judgement tests or role playing could be very beneficial towards uncovering potential candidates with an elevated passion for their work.

Attitudes of nursing faculty members toward technology and e-learning in Lebanon

BACKGROUND

Our transition to an "information society" means that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become integral to our lives. ICT has also become an essential aspect of medical institutions and healthcare settings. Healthcare professionals, especially nurses are required to use ICT in their daily work. In Lebanon, however, due to political factors, many universities have not introduced technology or any form of ICT in their curricula. Institutions of higher education do use technology in various ways, however, successful incorporation of ICT in education requires acceptance by instructors who are expected to use ICT in teaching practices. Although international findings reveal that ICT should be used in nursing education, some faculty members experience difficulty integrating it.

METHOD

A mixed methodological research approach was used to investigate the attitudes of nursing teaching staff toward the use of ICT in nursing education.

RESULTS

Our findings revealed three categories of faculty with differing attitudes to the use of ICT in teaching and learning: pioneers, faculty members who have developed positive attitudes toward ICT usage; followers, faculty members with neutral attitudes; and resisters, faculty members with negative attitudes.

CONCLUSIONS

Identification of the nursing faculty members' attitude toward ICT and the challenges faced by them contributes to the integration of ICT into nursing curricula and further development of educational practices.

Perceptions of digital technology in nursing education: A qualitative study

AIM

The aim of this study was to explore how digital technologies can facilitate interactive learning in a 15-credit theory module on basic nursing.

BACKGROUND

Digital platforms are in widespread use in nursing education; however, the rapid technological advancement provides new opportunities to support teaching and learning. This indicates the need to explore how educational digital technologies can be used as an integral part of learning activities to promote quality and relevance in nursing education. This study was carried out at the Department of Nursing Science at a university in Norway. The university has been using a digital platform for many years and has recently adopted a new platform named Canvas in 2018.

DESIGN

An explorative qualitative research design using focus group interviews.

METHODS

Three focus group interviews were conducted with students and teachers involved in a 15-credit module in basic nursing as part of the first year of the bachelor program. A total of 10 participants were recruited for this study and data were analysed using systematic text condensation.

RESULTS

The analysis resulted in three themes related to experiences with existing learning activities and general perceptions of digital technologies: 'pedagogical methodology affects learning and social fellowship'; 'need for varied, high-quality forms of learning' and 'need for structure and predictability'.

CONCLUSION

This study revealed several educational needs and emphasised the importance of digital competence involving professional knowledge and skills to facilitate the educational use of digital technologies.

Cyberbullying, student nurses' ethical awareness and the Covid-19 pandemic

BACKGROUND

The global COVID-19 pandemic has increased cyber communication, causing nursing students' clinical practice to be held in cyberspace. Thus, it is essential to ensure that nursing students develop comprehensive cyber ethics awareness. Moreover, cyberbullying is becoming more widespread and is an increasingly relevant new concept.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to assess the experiences of cyberbullying among nursing students during clinical practice and determine the effects of cyberbullying victimization and cyber environments on their cyber ethics awareness.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Data for this descriptive cross-sectional study were collected in July 2020 using a self-reported questionnaire and analyzed using hierarchical regression.

PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT

The study included data from 291 nursing students with more than 6 months of clinical experience who were enrolled in two nursing universities in two cities in South Korea.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

This study was conducted after obtaining approval from the Institutional Review Board of G University. Written, informed consent was obtained from all participants.

RESULTS

Cyberbullying victimization experiences during clinical practice were few. The most common cyberbullies of work- and person-related cyberbullying were nurses and classmates, respectively.

DISCUSSION

Cyber ethics awareness was affected by cyber anonymity and the perceived seriousness of cyberbullying; cyberbullying related to clinical practices was a new factor that significantly affected cyber ethics awareness.

CONCLUSIONS

Hospitals and nursing universities should develop a multi-dimensional, comprehensive, and effective nursing intervention education program to be integrated into the nursing curriculum to enhance cyber ethics awareness and reduce cyberbullying of nursing students.

The Higher Education Sustainability before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Spanish and Ecuadorian Case

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are key to create sustainable higher education institutions (HEIs). Most researchers focused on the students’ perspective, especially during the online teaching caused by COVID-19; however, university teachers are often forgotten, having their opinion missing. This study’s objective was to determine the factors that contribute to the inclusion of ICTs. The research based on a comparative study through an online qualitative survey focused on the inclusion and use of ICTs in two HEIs and two different moments (pre-and post-lockdowns). There were differences regarding country and working experience (p < 0.001), being linked to the ICTs use, evaluation of obstacles, and the role given to ICTs (p < 0.05). The COVID-19 caused modifications of the teachers’ perspectives, including an improvement of the opinion of older teachers regarding the essentialness of ICTs in the teaching process (p < 0.001) and worsening their perception about their ICTs skill (p < 0.05). Additionally, an initial model focused only on the university teachers and their use of ICTs has been proposed. In conclusion, the less experienced university teachers used more ICTs, identified more greatly the problematic factors, and considered more important the ICTs, with the perception of all teachers modified by COVID-19.

Nurses' ehealth literacy and associations with the nursing practice environment

AIM

To report on ehealth literacy levels in nurses and to explore its associations with the nursing practice environment.

BACKGROUND

Nurses increasingly use the Internet and associated technologies to seek health-relevant information and manage their health.

INTRODUCTION

High ehealth literacy is a predictor of better health outcomes in diverse populations but its levels and work-related determinants have not been adequately explored in direct-care nurses.

METHODS

The sample for this cross-sectional study consisted of 200 staff nurses and nursing assistants in Greece. Participants reported during February-March 2019 their sociodemographic and work-related characteristics on a self-administered questionnaire which included the "electronic Health Literacy Scale"-eHEALS, and the "Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index"-PES-NWI. Crude and adjusted logistic regressions were performed.

FINDINGS

In adjusted models, participants that scored higher on the "Collegial nurse-physician relationships" and "Nurse participation in hospital affairs" dimensions of the clinical environment had higher odds of reporting better ehealth literacy. The lowest item score in eHEALS was related to not being able to make health decisions using Internet information.

DISCUSSION

Nurses' ehealth literacy was positively associated with some dimensions of the hospital practice environment. Nurses reported higher ehealth literacy scores in comparison to other studies; however, they were not confident in distinguishing reliable health information from Internet sources. This is quite alarming because it can directly impair the ability of nurses to provide relevant and up-to-date evidence-based care.

CONCLUSION

This is the first study to report internationally on the positive associations of a good working environment with nurses' ehealth literacy levels.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND NURSING POLICY

Nursing policy should address the ehealth literary of nurses and integrate it into continuing professional education initiatives. Special focus should be put on nurses' ambiguity in distinguishing which ehealth information is reliable and can guide nursing practice. This should be combined with efforts to improve the nursing clinical environment and increase nurses' participation in hospital decisions.

Experiences of nursing students under the unprecedented abrupt online learning format forced by the national curfew due to COVID-19: A qualitative research study

BACKGROUND

The unprecedented abrupt shift to remote online learning (OL) within the context of the national lockdown due to the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) highlights the importance of addressing students' preparedness in managing their first experiences with OL.

PURPOSE

To investigate the experiences of undergraduate nursing students during their first uses of OL to increase the understanding of their encountered opportunities and challenges.

DESIGN

A descriptive qualitative design guided by a phenomenological approach was used.

METHODS

The study used a purposive sampling technique to recruit 18 undergraduate nursing students from two universities. Data were collected using two focus group discussions, and the discussions with participants were audio/video recorded through the online platform Zoom due to the national imposed curfew. Content analysis employed Colaizzi's steps to derive the themes/categories.

RESULTS

The study revealed four themes: experience of helplessness, burdens, and burnout; the need for social and technical support to manage OL; the propensity to consider OL as a positive opportunity; and the deficiency of OL in fulfilling the educational outcomes of clinical courses.

CONCLUSIONS

Abrupt remote OL was a challenge to clinical encounters. This format was very stressful; however, it was also useful. The current study highlighted the need for further research on the effectiveness of remote OL platforms in regard to the achievement of the intended learning outcomes of clinical courses.

A blended learning teaching strategy strengthens the nursing students' performance and self-reported learning outcome achievement in an anatomy, physiology and biochemistry course - A quasi-experimental study

In nursing, bioscience is regarded as one of the cornerstones of nursing practice. However, bioscience disciplines as anatomy, physiology and biochemistry are considered challenging for students and the failure rate is high. In this study we explore a blended learning teaching strategy in an anatomy, physiology and biochemistry course for first year Bachelor nursing students. In the blended learning teaching strategy, short narrated online digital resources of bioscientific terms and concepts were integrated into the teaching design along with digital metacognitive evaluations of learning outcomes. Results show that compared to students receiving traditional face-to-face teaching, the students with a blended learning approach performed better on their national exam with a small to medium effect size (Cohen's d=0.23). Student course evaluations supported the blended learning delivery with small to medium effect sizes. The students reported that the digital resources supported their learning outcome achievement, that they better understood the teacher's expectations and that they were more satisfied with their virtual learning environment. This study adds to the growing literature of blended learning effectiveness in higher education, and suggests the use of digital resources as an enrichment of teaching and enhancement of students' study experience.

Personal and technological skills to coach people with noncommunicable diseases: development and validation of a scale for nursing students

BACKGROUND

Current international policies converge to the need of empowering patients and families in becoming more autonomous in the self-caring and management of their noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Given their professional scope, nurses are the most well-positioned health professionals to answer this societal challenge. In the literature, health coaching and the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) emerge as two still under-used contributions to nursing practice in this regard. Given the lack of instruments and research developed so far in the use of health coaching and ICTs during nurses training, we aim to develop a scale that explores nursing students' perceptions regarding their coaching skills of people with NCDs and the potential role of ICTs in this domain.

METHODS

After a comprehensive literature review, an initial items list (n = 39) was delineated and discussed by a panel of international experts. After conceptual and structural consensus, the pre-validated version of the Personal and Technological Skills to coach people with noncommunicable diseases scale (PTSC-NCD scale) was created. Then, the pre-validated PTSC-NCD scale was translated to Portuguese, Finnish, Flemish and Slovenian following Beaton and colleagues' recommendations, and applied to undergraduate nursing students in five European universities. Principal component analysis and reliability analysis were performed in each country through the statistical program Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (version 22.0). All ethical assumptions were complied with throughout this study.

RESULTS

874 nursing students enrolled in the study, predominantly female (71.1%) and with a mean age of 22.4 years (SD = 5.49). After data analysis across international settings, three dimensions emerged: Coaching Centred Personal Skills (F1); Digital Technology Improving Patient-Centred Care (F2); and Digital Technology Improving Relational Skills (F3). All the dimensions showed good reliability (Cronbach's alpha >.80).

CONCLUSION

The PTSC-NCD scale evidence good validity and reliability indicators across different international settings.

Transitioning to Teaching Online During the COVID-19 Pandemic

BACKGROUND

During the COVID-19 pandemic many nursing educators have been required to abruptly convert to an online delivery model. Faculty need resources and support to transition face to face courses into an online format.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this article is to highlight nursing faculty perceptions of the effectiveness of resources, support, and methodologies for online teaching during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

METHODS

A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was used to collect data about nursing faculty resources, support and methodologies used to transition at least one undergraduate or graduate degree nursing course to an online format during the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESULTS

Eighty-four faculty who taught in ten university colleges of nursing used varied teaching methodologies in online courses, but included some consistent methods such as websites and web based tools. The student engagement strategies that faculty were most satisfied with were journal writing and projects. Most faculty reported having information technology support and access to instructional design resources.

CONCLUSION

Nursing faculty were resourceful, adaptive, and willing to use both novel and existing resources and methodologies to meet their teaching objectives and engage students. They were also, overall, satisfied with the administrative support they received from their respective institutions. Many of these resources, methodologies, and supports will continue to be used by faculty as likely more programs and courses will continue to be managed online.

Guess it (SVUAL): An app designed to help nursing students acquire and retain knowledge about basic and advanced life support techniques

To design an app that helps nursing students to acquire and retain knowledge of Basic and Advanced Life Support techniques, as well as analyze the students' gamification experience. The study had two phases: 1) App design and development and 2) experimental study. A total of 184 students participated, with 92 in the experimental group and 92 in the control group. The instruments used were the Guess it (SVUAL) app, a test on knowledge and the Gameful Experience Scale. The app was deemed to have a suitable level of content and user-friendliness of 97%. The experimental group obtained a higher average score on the knowledge test than the control group (U = 2835.500; Z = -3.968; p < 0.05). On the re-test, the experimental group also obtained a higher average score than the control group. As for the experience within the game, all the dimensions scored higher than average, except the absence of negative effects dimension, which indicates that the app had very few negative consequences on the participants. The developed app has proven to have a good level of content and to be user-friendly, improving knowledge levels and retention of information in nursing students.

Israeli nursing students' acceptance of information and communication technologies in clinical placements

BACKGROUND

Nursing students are required to be adequately prepared to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in clinical practice. Yet, studies conducted worldwide indicate personal, organizational, and social barriers reported by students and a discrepancy between clinical resources and students' needs.

PURPOSE

To explore nursing students' usage of ICT during clinical placement and the associations between students' ICT acceptance, human and organizational resources, and ICT usage.

METHOD

Data were collected from 303 second and third year Israeli nursing students, through a self-administered structured questionnaire.

RESULTS

The use of Medical Health Records during clinical placements was rated highest (M = 4.62, SD = 0.74, range 1-5), whereas the use of e-Books was rated lowest (M = 2.26, SD = 1.37, range 1-5). Positive correlations were found between ICT use and human resources, social influence, organizational resources, and performance expectancy. Significant differences were found according to study years and proficiency in computer skills between students. Perceived human resources, cultural group, Hebrew proficiency, and social influence explained 28% of students' variance in ICT usage.

CONCLUSIONS

Nurse administrators and educators should promote the preparation of clinical settings in accordance with students' needs and proficiencies. Moreover, the development of curricula and clinical practicums must also take into account the role of organizational, social, and computer proficiency in students' ICT adoption.

STEM crisis teaching: Curriculum design with e-learning tools

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent social distancing protocols have accelerated the shift to online teaching across the globe. In Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs this means a shift from face-to-face laboratory instruction to self-directed learning with e-learning tools. Unfortunately, selecting and integrating an e-learning tool into a curriculum can be daunting. This article highlights key questions and practical suggestions instructors should consider in choosing the most effective option for their course and learners.

Bibliometric Study of Technology and Occupational Health in Healthcare Sector: A Worldwide Trend to the Future

Since the eighties, technological tools have modified how people interact in their environment. At the same time, occupational safety and health measures have been widely applied. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work considers that information and communication technologies are the main methods to achieve the goals proposed to improve working life and the dissemination of good practices. The principal objective was to determine the trends of publications focused on these technologies and occupational safety in the healthcare sector during the last 30 years. A bibliometric study was carried out. The 1021 documents showed an increased trend per country, especially for the United States (p < 0.001) and year (p < 0.001). The citations per year showed significant differences between citations of articles published before 2007 (p < 0.001). The year was also linked to the increase or decrease of articles (72.2%) and reviews (14.9%) (p < 0.001). The analysis of journal co-citations also showed that the main journals (such as Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology) were linked to other important journals and had a major part in the clusters formed. All these findings were discussed in the manuscript and conclusions were drawn.

Podcasting in nursing and midwifery education: An integrative review

Podcasting is used in higher education so various digital resources can be shared with students. This review aims to synthesise evidence on podcasting in nursing and midwifery education. PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus and ERIC databases were searched using key terms. 242 articles were found and screened. Data extraction, quality assessment and data analysis, underpinned by a Social Media Learning Model, were conducted on relevant studies. Twenty-six studies were included in the review. Three themes emerged; 1) learning and other outcomes, 2) antecedents to learning, and 3) learning process. Students seemed to acquire new knowledge and skills by using podcasts and it also appeared to improve clinical confidence. The organisation of podcasting, digital literacy and e-Professionalism, the personal motivation of learners, and flexible access to the technology seemed to impact the delivery of this educational intervention. Mechanisms that appeared to affect the learning process were the speed of exchange, the type of social media user, the timeframe, quality of information, the functionality of podcasts and other learning activities. This review synthesised evidence on podcasting in nursing and midwifery education. The technology was seen as a positive learning tool but more robust research examining its efficacy in improving learning outcomes is needed.

Online interprofessional education related to chronic illness for health professionals: a scoping review

This scoping review focuses on identifying the quantity and quality of research evidence available with regard to online interprofessional education related to chronic disease management. Recent advances have seen the emergence of information communication technology and digital health solutions that may improve monitoring of and self-management of chronic disease. With the growing chronic disease burden globally, and the advancement of information communication technology, digital health solutions may improve chronic disease monitoring and self-management. However, health professionals are slow to utilize this technology in chronic disease management. Online education has the potential to enhance utilization of digital health solutions across interprofessional healthcare teams. This scoping review focuses on online interprofessional education and eLearning strategies used to promote engagement and achievement of learning outcomes between health care professionals in chronic disease management. A systematic search of the literature yielded 3112 papers; 15 studies were included in the review following an independent screening process. The review found very limited research for online interprofessional education related to chronic disease so it is not feasible to comment or draw conclusions in relation to its impact on interprofessional learning, student engagement in education or its impact in practice, services or health outcomes. Research methodology and online eLearning strategies varied across studies, highlighting the need for further rigorous studies that include consistency in online interprofessional education strategies, evaluations and study methods.

The academic experiences of transitioning to blended online and digital nursing curriculum

BACKGROUND

The blended online digital (BOLD) approach to teaching is popular within many universities. However, much of the research conducted in this area focusses on the student perspective. Aim The aim of this study is to explore the experiences and perspectives of academics involved in the development and implementation of an inaugural BOLD Bachelor of Nursing curriculum at a regional multi-campus institution in Victoria, Australia.

METHODS

Eleven academics across two regional campuses participated in one of five focus groups. Creswell's (2003) six step approach to thematic analysis was used to analyse the semi-structured interview data in order to capture the meaning of the transition experience.

FINDINGS

Three significant themes emerged from the focus group data: 'Get Ready', 'Get Set', and 'Go'.

DISCUSSION

Three significant themes emerged, 'Get Ready', embodies insight from academic staff preparing to make the transition to a BOLD delivery model acknowledging the need for staff to be genuinely prepared, educated, guided and supported to understand the pedagogy of BOLD. Secondly, 'Get Set', acknowledges the period immediately after the preparatory phase and preparedness of academic staff to manage content and delivery for both face-to-face and online student cohorts within the learning platform. Thirdly, the theme 'Go' recognises the culmination of the previous two phases and is a recognition of the need for ongoing evaluation across the implementation phase.

CONCLUSION

This qualitative exploration of nursing academics' experience contributes to contemporary pedagogical insights in relation to the blended approaches to teaching and learning.

Effect of e-learning on nurses' continuing professional development

BACKGROUND

E-learning can provide nurses with the opportunity to undertake lifelong learning and continuing professional development (CPD) in a flexible, practical and engaging manner. However, much of the research focuses on pre-registration nursing students' experiences of e-learning, despite nursing students not always experiencing the same clinical demands as registered nurses.

AIM

To explore the concept of e-learning and nurses' perception of its value for engaging with lifelong learning and CPD, as well as to determine attitudes towards e-learning, what influencing factors exist and how they affect the perceived value of e-learning.

METHOD

This study used a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, in which there were two phases of data collection and analysis. In the first phase, 39 children's nurses completed questionnaires about e-learning and its flexibility, accessibility, value and contribution to CPD. Their responses were analysed and used to inform questions for the second phase, which involved semi-structured interviews exploring the findings and emerging themes from the completed questionnaires. Of the 39 questionnaire respondents, 12 agreed to participate in the interviews.

FINDINGS

More than half of the questionnaire respondents ( n =22/39) agreed or strongly agreed that e-learning aids their CPD, while 29 respondents valued e-learning that is specific to their practice area. Three main factors were identified that may influence the effect of e-learning on nurses' CPD: motivation to engage with CPD and e-learning; the perceived value of e-learning as a method for CPD; and challenges to effective engagement with e-learning.

CONCLUSION

Engagement with e-learning is influenced by the content of its modules and, while mandatory training is often provided through e-learning, this should not be its sole purpose. Nurses should take the opportunity to develop and engage with e-learning that is specific to their area of practice, which may increase its value.

Behavior change counseling training programs for nurses and nursing students: A systematic descriptive review

OBJECTIVES

(1) To systematically review the literature on behavior change counseling (BCC) training programs targeting nurses and nursing students; (2) to characterize these training programs according to their content (i.e., targeted health behavior[s], BCC approaches taught, BCC techniques taught), structure, and modes of delivery.

DESIGN

A systematic, descriptive literature review.

DATA SOURCES

PubMed, CINAHL and Embase were searched with no time limitation in August 2018.

REVIEW METHODS

A systematic, descriptive literature review structured according to Paré et al.'s methodology and the PRISMA guidelines. Primary studies were included if they evaluated a BCC training program with nurses or nursing students. Review authors screened studies, extracted data, and assessed study quality using the MERSQI. Data was synthesized through narrative synthesis, descriptive statistics, and content analysis.

RESULTS

From a pool of 267 articles, we included 25 articles published between 2003 and 2018. Two studies scored as low quality (8%), 18 as moderate quality (72%), and 5 as high quality (20%). Physical activity (n = 14; 56%) and smoking (n = 11; 44%) were the most frequently targeted health behaviors. Eleven BCC approaches were cited (e.g., motivational interviewing), and 48 BCC techniques were identified (e.g., eliciting and scaling change talk). The median number of training sessions was 3 (interquartile range [IQR] 5), the median training program duration was 3 h (IQR 6.25 h), and median training period was 24.5 days (IQR 110 days). Programs were most often delivered as seminars and workshops.

CONCLUSIONS

High-quality studies reporting the assessment of BCC training programs with nurses and nursing students are scarce. There was significant heterogeneity in terms of the BCC approaches and techniques taught. Current evidence suggests nurses and nursing students learn BCC mainly through active, realistic practice. However, computer-based training programs are rapidly gaining ground. Further research emphasizing theory-based BCC training programs is warranted.

Integration of Informatics Content in Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Education: An Updated Status Report

BACKGROUND

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing identified informatics and health care technology as an essential component of baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral education, but schools still struggle to effectively deliver this core knowledge.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to provide an update of the 2013 status report on the integration of informatics in nursing education.

METHOD

The top twenty-five 2018 US News & World Report Best Online Nursing Programs were reviewed for courses with technology, computers, informatics, statistics, or research in the title.

FINDINGS

Sixty-seven percent of the schools with master's programs and more than 80% of the DNP programs included at least 1 informatics course. Schools with online BSN courses had about the same number of programs with informatics courses as the 2013 report.

CONCLUSION

While there was some improvement in the number of informatics courses in the programs reviewed, faculty need support to overcome barriers to teaching informatics.

The Effect of Web-Based Preoperative and Postoperative Patient Care Education on Nursing Students: A Randomized Controlled Study

This study examined the effect of Web-based preoperative and postoperative patient care education among undergraduate nursing students. This was an experimental, randomized controlled study. The study included 305 nursing students (experimental group: n = 155, control group: n = 150), who were assessed with the following instruments: the Preoperative and Postoperative Care Knowledge Test, Preoperative and Postoperative Care Skill Control List, Clinical Decision Making in Nursing Scale, and Nursing Student Clinical Performance Evaluation Scale. t Tests and χ tests were used to evaluate the data. There was no statistically significant difference between the students' posttest knowledge levels, clinical performance assessment, or clinical decision-making scores. The experimental group was found to perform the skills of "check patient's documents and prophylactic antibiotics when going to surgery" (χ = 4.88; P = .02), "controls the surgical safety checklist (before surgery) before going to surgery" (χ = 10.41; P = .00), and "observes surgical site/dressing (χ = 7.77; P = .00)" at a statistically significantly higher level. The education provided in the Web-based education was equivalent to that provided in traditional education. Thus, Web-based education appears to be a useful tool to educate student nurses in preoperative and postoperative patient care.

New Zealand nursing students' perceptions of biosciences: A cross-sectional survey of relevance to practice, teaching delivery, self-competence and challenges

BACKGROUND

Bioscience subjects are one of the most discussed nursing curricula contents in terms of the longed known teaching and learning challenges for nursing students. Recent studies examined the specific use of technology as teaching strategies. However, there are still significant gaps around nursing students' perception of biosciences within nursing education and the significance of teaching delivery methods to these perceptions.

OBJECTIVE

The study examined students' overall perception of biosciences within New Zealand undergraduate nursing programmes in terms of relevance to practice, teaching delivery, self-competence and challenges encountered.

METHOD

A descriptive, cross-sectional survey design on perceptions of New Zealand nursing students on biosciences was undertaken.

RESULTS

Five hundred and forty students were included. Fifty-five percent (55%) preferred biosciences papers be taught classroom - based but using a blended learning delivery instead of an exclusively traditional classroom setting (55% vs. 21%). Perception towards the biosciences was positive and the mean perception of older students and those in Year 3 was higher compared to the other students. Overall, students believed biosciences had relevance to the practice of nursing.

CONCLUSION

Positive perceptions of bioscience become more evident when nursing students reach their final year in the nursing programme. The contemporary profile (age) of students studying nursing are sensitive to their preferred teaching delivery. A fully online teaching approach to biosciences for nursing students will most likely require a robust approach and careful decision making for implementation.

Virtual Patient Simulations in Health Professions Education: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis by the Digital Health Education Collaboration

Background

Virtual patients are interactive digital simulations of clinical scenarios for the purpose of health professions education. There is no current collated evidence on the effectiveness of this form of education.

Objective

The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual patients compared with traditional education, blended with traditional education, compared with other types of digital education, and design variants of virtual patients in health professions education. The outcomes of interest were knowledge, skills, attitudes, and satisfaction.

Methods

We performed a systematic review on the effectiveness of virtual patient simulations in pre- and postregistration health professions education following Cochrane methodology. We searched 7 databases from the year 1990 up to September 2018. No language restrictions were applied. We included randomized controlled trials and cluster randomized trials. We independently selected studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias and then compared the information in pairs. We contacted study authors for additional information if necessary. All pooled analyses were based on random-effects models.

Results

A total of 51 trials involving 4696 participants met our inclusion criteria. Furthermore, 25 studies compared virtual patients with traditional education, 11 studies investigated virtual patients as blended learning, 5 studies compared virtual patients with different forms of digital education, and 10 studies compared different design variants. The pooled analysis of studies comparing the effect of virtual patients to traditional education showed similar results for knowledge (standardized mean difference [SMD]=0.11, 95% CI −0.17 to 0.39, I²=74%, n=927) and favored virtual patients for skills (SMD=0.90, 95% CI 0.49 to 1.32, I²=88%, n=897). Studies measuring attitudes and satisfaction predominantly used surveys with item-by-item comparison. Trials comparing virtual patients with different forms of digital education and design variants were not numerous enough to give clear recommendations. Several methodological limitations in the included studies and heterogeneity contributed to a generally low quality of evidence.

Conclusions

Low to modest and mixed evidence suggests that when compared with traditional education, virtual patients can more effectively improve skills, and at least as effectively improve knowledge. The skills that improved were clinical reasoning, procedural skills, and a mix of procedural and team skills. We found evidence of effectiveness in both high-income and low- and middle-income countries, demonstrating the global applicability of virtual patients. Further research should explore the utility of different design variants of virtual patients.

Evaluation of Swedish nursing students' experience of a web-based platform for drug calculation

Safe drug calculation is important in nursing as insufficient skills pose a risk to patient safety. Therefor solid education in mathematics for undergraduate nursing students must be provided. To support nursing students' skills in drug calculation, a web-based learning platform for drug calculation was created. The aim of this study was to investigate nursing students' experiences of a web-based learning platform for drug calculation in terms of usability and learning support. The study was a cross-sectional comparative study. Ninety-five nursing students participated, out of which 46 students were in semester one and 49 students were in semester six. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the nursing students' experiences of a web-based learning platform for drug calculation in terms of usability and learning support. The findings were informed by statistical and thematic analyses. The majority of the participants evaluated the platform positively. The platform was deemed useful, and it was a support for the nursing students' learning. These findings provide that a web-based learning platform for drug calculation can be used as a complement to traditional lectures. Nevertheless, further research is required focusing teaching strategies facilitating different learning styles and level of computer skills.

Multimedia-assisted instruction on pain assessment learning of new nurses: a quasi-experimental study

BACKGROUND

Pain assessment and treatment are key factors affecting the quality and safety of care for patients and capabilities related to them are crucial for new nursing staff. Consequently, we developed a multimedia-assisted teaching program for nursing newcomers' pain assessment learning to facilitate their practical pain assessment ability. The goal of this study was to evaluate a multimedia instructional program to boost new nurses' ability to conduct pain assessment and treatment, through simulated scenario instruction.

METHODS

A quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest design with purposive sampling was used in this study. Eighty-six nurses were enrolled (control group, n = 39; experimental group, n = 47). Both groups underwent traditional pain assessment training in the classroom. The control group received lectures using PowerPoint files; while the experimental group undertook pain assessment training with the same content but delivered via multimedia-assisted instruction based on the ADDIE model. Pre- and post-instruction questionnaires relating to pain knowledge were completed. Participants' competence in performing pain assessment was subsequently evaluated one-month post instruction.

RESULTS

The experimental group had significantly higher satisfaction scores (27.67 ± 3.76 vs. 31.36 ± 3.42, p < .01, respectively), and demonstrated greater knowledge of pain assessment (7.73 ± 0.67 vs. 7.08 ± 0.90, p < .05, respectively) than did the control group. Additionally, when evaluated at the one month follow-up, newcomers in the experimental group had better communication ability to perform pain assessment (26.58 ± 3.01 vs. 25.08 ± 3.32, p < .05, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

The program can improve nurses' pain assessment knowledge and competence. Newcomers were able to better respond to patients in pain, which is essential for pain assessment. This pilot study thus suggests a new, multimedia program for training nursing newcomers in pain assessment.
