Application of mobile-based web app to enhance simple suturing skills of nurse practitioners

BACKGROUND

Suturing is a crucial clinical skill for nurse practitioners (NPs), but the effectiveness of traditional training methods (e.g., physical suture kits combined with video content) is low.

OBJECTIVE

This study compared the effectiveness and usability of a mobile-based web app (MoWa) developed for NPs to learn simple suturing skills with those of traditional instructional video-based training.

METHODS

The MoWa system utilizes mobile devices to simulate hands-on suturing and provides learning guidance and feedback to support self-learning with a physical suturing kit. Fifty-four suturing novices (NPs) were recruited as participants, divided into an experimental group (EG: 28 participants) and a control group (CG: 26 participants), and instructed to self-learn for 3 weeks. Learning effectiveness and system usability were evaluated through a pretest and posttest.

RESULTS

The EG exhibited significant improvements in learning outcomes, self-confidence, self-efficacy, and learning anxiety and expressed satisfaction with the MoWa system. Furthermore, the EG also considerably enhanced learning outcomes, self-efficacy, and learning anxiety compared to the CG, with no significant difference in self-confidence.

CONCLUSION

The MoWa system combined with deliberate practice is an effective strategy for supporting suturing skills training.

The influence of heart failure high-fidelity simulation education based on NLN Jeffries simulation framework in the prelicensure nursing program: A quasi-experimental study

Objectives

To examine the influence of heart failure high-fidelity simulation education based on the National League for Nursing (NLN) Jeffries Simulation Framework in prelicensure nursing education.

Methods

A heart failure high-fidelity simulation (HFHFS) education pilot project was carried out at Carrington College Sacramento. Twenty-three students participated in the study. This study used a quasi-experimental design. Students' Self-Efficacy, Satisfaction, and Knowledge in Heart Failure Clinical Knowledge were measured pre- and post-HFHFS education.

Results

The results of the high-fidelity simulation education for heart failure showed that students achieved a mean score of 45.39 (SD = 7.88) in self-efficacy, 18.70 (SD = 3.38) in satisfaction, and 64.09 (SD = 10.86) in knowledge after the intervention. The paired-sample t-test significantly improved between the pre- and post-intervention scores (P < 0.001). The students highly rated self-efficacy, student satisfaction, and knowledge because of the positive impact on the teaching effectiveness of simulation design (i.e., objectives, problem-solving, student support, fidelity, debriefing) activity that included the application of quality safety education for nurses (QSEN) three competencies safety, patient-centered care, and teamwork and collaboration during nursing care for patients with acute heart failure. The teaching effectiveness of the heart failure high-fidelity simulation education is closely correlated with student satisfaction, self-efficacy, and improvement of participant knowledge in clinical nursing skills performance and critical thinking.

Conclusion

A heart failure high-fidelity simulation education established upon the National League for Nursing (NLN) Jeffries framework enhanced student knowledge, satisfaction, self-efficacy, application of safety, patient-centered care, and teamwork and collaboration. Nurse educators should consider simulation planning to include the five simulation design characteristics, i.e., objectives, problem-solving, student support, fidelity, and debriefing, while integrating safety, patient-centered care, and teamwork and collaboration to bring about education effectiveness.

During three years of the unprecedented, massive COVID-19 pandemic that affected the world, nurse front liners faced substantial challenges and experienced long-term adverse mental health. This study explored psychological self-care practices undertaken by nurses to strengthen their mental health and develop resilience in their professional care role while addressing the challenges of the COVID-19 era. A qualitative descriptive exploratory study was conducted on 40 nurses who worked in providing COVID-19 care across Brunei using focus groups aided by semi-structured open-ended questions. Data were thematically analyzed using constructivist grounded theory. Four themes emerged: (1) 'Care of the mind, heart and soul'; (2) 'Physical care for the psychological well-being'; (3) 'Venting out and distraction'; (4) 'Have faith, think and stay positive'. The challenges of dealing with a worldwide pandemic unintentionally placed nurses' mental well-being at risk while the government strategized and prioritized containing and preventing the spread of and death from COVID-19. Health administrators, as well as nursing educators, need to promote and develop resources to strengthen nurses' psychological self-care practices. This will not only benefit individual nurses but will help promote the well-being of patients and employees, improve the health of all, and counteract any unintended stressful situations, even beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Determinants of the mental health status of university students in Japan: comparison between pandemic and recession periods during the 7th wave of COVID-19

Introduction

Although the number of identified coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases and deaths has decreased, the repetitive crest-trough pattern of the spread of COVID-19 has yet to cease. The current situation may affect the mental health status of university students who are distracted in their academic and daily lives by the pandemic. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the determinant factors of the mental health status of Japanese university students before and in the middle of the 7th wave of the pandemic, one of the largest waves to be experienced in Japan.

Method

A survey was administered to two groups of students during the recession period between the 6th and 7th waves (n = 156) and during the 7th wave of the pandemic (n = 97).

Results

T-tests showed no statistically significant differences between the two groups in Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) scores, while the COVID-19 anxiety scores (p < 0.001) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) scores were significantly higher in the Pandemic period group (p = 0.011). The multiple regression model indicated that PSS scores were the only determinant of GHQ scores in the Pandemic period group.

Discussion

The results indicate that stressful life events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and daily hassles, which are measured by the PSS, affect students' mental health differently. Therefore, the author submits that school counselors should provide counseling to students to reduce anxiety caused by daily hassles, during recession and pandemic periods. Students also require assistance with the reduction of stress and anxiety caused by daily hassles, regardless of the pandemic situation.

Trauma and survivance: The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Indigenous nursing students

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in tremendous educational and health impacts for Indigenous peoples and communities. Yet, little is known about the impacts of the pandemic on Indigenous nursing students in Canada. Guided by an Indigenous conceptual framework and a qualitative sharing circle methodology, the interconnected personal, academic, and community impacts of the pandemic were explored with Indigenous nursing students (n = 17). Overall, the pandemic exacerbated and compounded prior traumas Indigenous students and communities have experienced across generations on Turtle Island. Participants suffered worsening psychological distress and significant losses during the pandemic, especially losses in learning and cultural safety. However, the pandemic also revealed silver linings including: the benefits of online learning; and demonstrations of posttraumatic growth, survivance, and community strength. These findings are relevant to informing culturally safe and trauma-informed strategies, policies, administrators, and educators in schools of nursing.
