Abstract
The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) is indeed a valuable nutritional tool used to evaluate the overall antioxidant capacity of an individual's daily food consumption. The CDAI was calculated from the intake of six antioxidant components in the diet, including vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E, carotenoids, selenium, and zinc. This study aimed to determine the association between CDAI and stroke. Utilizing data from the 2003-2018 NHANES dataset, CDAI was computed by summarizing the intake of six dietary antioxidants based on 24-hour dietary recall interviews. The relationship between CDAI and stroke was examined using multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline analysis. This study ultimately included 39,432 participants, of whom 1,527 (3.87%) had a stroke. The multivariate logistic regression model 3 that fully adjusted all confounding variables showed a negative association between CDAI and stroke (OR = 0.97; 95% CI:0.95, 0.99). The highest tertile of CDAI saw a 23% drop in the prevalence of stroke compared to the lowest tertile (OR = 0.77; 95%CI: 0.64,0.92). Restricted cubic spline suggested that this negative correlation was nonlinear with an inflection point of -2.99. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests showed that this negative correlation was more applicable in patients with prediabetes (P < 0.05). There was a non-linear negative correlation between CDAI level and stroke prevalence, and this correlation was more significant in people with pre-diabetes. Appropriate CDAI levels may contribute to the management of stroke risk.

Abstract
Ischemic stroke is an important cause of mortality and disability worldwide. Given that current treatments do not allow a remarkably better outcome in patients after stroke, it is mandatory to seek new approaches to preventing stroke and/or complementing the current treatments or ameliorating the ischemic insult. Multiple preclinical and clinical studies highlighted the potential beneficial roles of exercise and a Mediterranean diet following a stroke. Here, we investigated the effects of a pre-stroke Mediterranean-like diet supplemented with hydroxytyrosol and with/without physical exercise on male rats undergoing transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO). We also assessed a potential synergistic effect with physical exercise. Our findings indicated that the diet reduced infarct and edema volumes, modulated acute immune response by altering cytokine and chemokine levels, decreased oxidative stress, and improved acute functional recovery post-ischemic injury. Interestingly, while physical exercise alone improved certain outcomes compared to control animals, it did not enhance, and in some aspects even impaired, the positive effects of the Mediterranean-like diet in the short term. Overall, these data provide the first preclinical evidence that a preemptive enriched Mediterranean diet modulates cytokines/chemokines levels downwards which eventually has an important role during the acute phase following ischemic damage, likely mediating neuroprotection.

The Effect of Oleoylethanolamide (OEA) Add-On Treatment on Inflammatory, Oxidative Stress, Lipid, and Biochemical Parameters in the Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients: Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Study. Abstract
Methods Sixty patients with a mean age of 68.60 ± 2.10 comprising 29 females (48.33%), who were admitted to an academic tertiary care facility within the first 12 hours poststroke symptoms onset or last known well (LKW), in case symptom onset time is not clear, were included in this study. AIS was confirmed based on a noncontrast head CT scan and also neurological symptoms. Patients were randomly and blindly assigned to OEA of 300 mg/day (n = 20) or 600 mg/day (n = 20) or placebo (n = 20) in addition to the standard AIS treatment for three days. A blood sample was drawn at 12 hours from symptoms onset or LKW as the baseline followed by the second blood sample at 72 hours post symptoms onset or LKW. Blood samples were assessed for inflammatory and biochemical parameters, oxidative stress (OS) biomarkers, and lipid profile. Results Compared to the baseline, there is a significant reduction in the urea, creatinine, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein, cholesterol, alanine transaminase, total antioxidant capacity, malondialdehyde (MDA), total thiol groups (TTG), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and C-reactive protein levels on the follow-up blood testing in the OEA (300 mg/day) group. In patients receiving OEA (600 mg/day) treatment, there was only a significant reduction in the MDA level comparing baseline with follow-up blood testing. Also, the between-group analysis revealed a statistically significant difference between patients receiving OEA (300 mg/day) and placebo in terms of IL-6 and TTG level reduction when comparing them between baseline and follow-up blood testing. Conclusion OEA in moderate dosage, 300 mg/day, add-on to the standard stroke treatment improves short-term inflammatory, OS, lipid, and biochemical parameters in patients with AIS. This effect might lead to a better long-term neurological prognosis.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the possible neuroprotective effect of 3′,4′-dihydroxyphenylglycol (DHPG), a polyphenol from extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), in an experimental model of diabetes and whether this effect is modified by the presence of another EVOO polyphenol, hydroxytyrosol (HT). The neuroprotective effect was assessed in a hypoxia–reoxygenation model in brain slices and by quantifying retinal nerve cells. The animals were distributed as follows: (1) normoglycemic rats (NDR), (2) diabetic rats (DR), (3) DR treated with HT (5 mg/kg/day p.o.), (4) DR treated with DHPG (0.5 mg/kg/day), or (5) with 1 mg/kg/day, (6) DR treated with HT plus DHPG 0.5 mg/kg/day, or (7) HT plus 1 mg/kg/day p.o. DHPG. Diabetic animals presented higher levels of oxidative stress variables and lower numbers of neuronal cells in retinal tissue. The administration of DHPG or HT reduced most of the oxidative stress variables and brain lactate dehydrogenase efflux (LDH) as an indirect index of cellular death and also reduced the loss of retinal cells. The association of DHPG+HT in the same proportions, as found in EVOO, improved the neuroprotective and antioxidant effects of both polyphenols.

Abstract
Aging in modern societies is often associated with various diseases including metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders. In recent years, researchers have shown that both dysfunctions are related to each other. Although the relationship is not fully understood, recent evidence indicate that metabolic control plays a determinant role in neural defects onset. Indeed, energy balance dysregulation affects neuroenergetics by altering energy supply and thus neuronal activity. Consistently, different diets to help control body weight, blood glucose or insulin sensitivity are also effective in improving neurodegenerative disorders, dampening symptoms, or decreasing the risk of disease onset. Moreover, adapted nutritional recommendations improve learning, memory, and mood in healthy subjects as well. Interestingly, adjusted carbohydrate content of meals is the most efficient for both brain function and metabolic regulation improvement. Notably, documented neurological disorders impacted by specific diets suggest that the processes involved are inflammation, mitochondrial function and redox balance as well as ATP production. Interestingly, processes involving inflammation, mitochondrial function and redox balance as well as ATP production are also described in brain regulation of energy homeostasis. Therefore, it is likely that changes in brain function induced by diets can affect brain control of energy homeostasis and other brain functions such as memory, anxiety, social behavior, or motor skills. Moreover, a defect in energy supply could participate to the development of neurodegenerative disorders. Among the possible processes involved, the role of ketone bodies metabolism, neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity, oxidative stress and inflammation or epigenetic regulations as well as gut-brain axis and SCFA have been proposed in the literature. Therefore, the goal of this review is to provide hints about how nutritional studies could help to better understand the tight relationship between metabolic balance, brain activity and aging. Altogether, diets that help maintaining a metabolic balance could be key to both maintain energy homeostasis and prevent neurological disorders, thus contributing to promote healthy aging.

Abstract
Increasing evidences suggest that inflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of stroke, a devastating disease second only to cardiac ischemia as a cause of death worldwide. Microglia are the first non-neuronal cells on the scene during the innate immune response to acute ischemic stroke. Microglia respond to acute brain injury by activating and developing classic M1-like (pro-inflammatory) or alternative M2-like (anti-inflammatory) phenotypes. M1 microglia produce pro-inflammatory cytokines to exacerbate neural death, astrocyte apoptosis, and blood brain barrier (BBB) disruption, while M2 microglia play the opposite role. NF-κB, a central regulator of the inflammatory response, was responsible for microglia M1 and M2 polarization. NF-κB p65 and p50 form a heterodimer to initiate a pro-inflammatory cytokine response, which enhances M1 activation and impair M2 response of microglia. TLR4, expressed on the surface of microglia, plays an important role in activating NF-κB, ultimately causing the M1 response of microglia. Therefore, modulation of microglial phenotypes via TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway may be a promising therapeutic approach for ischemic stroke. Dietary (poly)phenols are present in various foods, which have shown promising protective effects on ischemic stroke. In vivo studies strongly suggest that many (poly)phenols have a pronounced impact on ischemic stroke, as demonstrated by lower neuroinflammation. Thus, this review focuses on the anti-inflammatory properties of dietary (poly)phenols and discusses their effects on the polarization of microglia through modulating TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway in the ischemic stroke.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease caused by joint degeneration with massive cartilage loss, and obesity is among the risk factors for its onset, though the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the disease and better therapeutic approach still remain to be assessed. In recent years, several nutraceutical interventions have been investigated in order to define better solutions for preventing and treating OA. Among them, polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) appear to represent potential candidates in counteracting OA and its consequences, due to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and chondroinductive effects. PUFAs have been found to counteract the onset and progression of OA by reducing bone and cartilage destruction, inhibiting proinflammatory cytokine release, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and the NF-κB pathway's activation. Moreover, a diet rich in n-3 PUFAs and their derivatives (maresins and resolvins) demonstrates beneficial effects on associated pain reduction. Finally, it has been shown that together with the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids, their antiapoptotic and antiangiogenic effects contribute in reducing OA development. The present review is aimed at assessing evidence suggesting the potential benefit of nutraceutical supplementation with PUFAs in OA management according to their efficacy in targeting relevant pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for inflammation and joint destruction processes, and this may represent a novel and potentially useful approach in OA prevention and treatment. For that purpose, a PubMed literature survey was conducted with a focus on some in vitro and in vivo studies and clinical trials from 2015 to 2020.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Dietary interventions may play a role in the pathophysiology of common neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, migraines, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy. This article describes the most common and impactful dietary regimens for commonly encountered neurological disorders. RECENT FINDINGS Plant-based, low-fat, high-fiber diets, rich in antioxidants and other lifestyle interventions may reduce the burden and disability of common neurological disorders. The ketogenic diet, the diet of choice for the treatment of refractory epilepsy, is such an example. Diverse neurological disorders demonstrate several common pathophysiological mechanisms including increased oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and disrupted metabolism. Dietary interventions can potentially influence these pathophysiological processes and thus favorably alter clinical outcomes. Adequate dietary choices should be considered as part of a continuum of healthy lifestyle choices.

Abstract
Malnutrition is a serious problem in post-stroke patients. Importantly, it intensifies with hospitalization, and is related to both somatic and psychological reasons, as well as is associated with the insufficient knowledge of people who accompany the patient. Malnutrition is a negative prognostic factor, leading to a reduction in the quality of life. Moreover, this condition significantly extends hospitalization time, increases the frequency of treatment in intensive care units, and negatively affects the effectiveness of rehabilitation. Obtaining growing data on the therapeutic effectiveness of new compounds of natural origin is possible through the use of pharmacodynamic and analytical methods to assess their therapeutic properties. The proper supply of nutrients, as well as compounds of natural origin, is an important element of post-stroke therapy, due to their strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and neuroplasticity enhancing properties. Taking the above into account, in this review we present the current state of knowledge on the benefits of using selected substances of natural origin in patients after cerebral stroke.

Abstract
Nitraria tangutorun Bobr. has been used for thousands of years as a native folk medicine to alleviate dizziness and neurasthenia due to oxygen. In our previous study, natural antioxidant components (namely, NJBE) were isolated from industrial N. tangutorun Bobr. juice byproducts (NJBE) from the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. The current investigation assessed the effects of NJBE on ischemic stroke in mice and the potential mechanisms. C57BL/6 mice received NJBE (25, 50, or 100 mg/Kg) by gavage for 14 days and then stroke was induced by the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model, followed by reperfusion for 72 h. The evaluation of brain infarct size, behavioral tests, and functional assessments was conducted to assess the effects of NJBE after MCAO. Our results suggested that NJBE significantly decreases infarct size, improves neurological deficits, as well as reduces the number of GFAP+ and Iba-1+ cells after MCAO. NJBE inhibited nitric oxide and malondialdehyde production in the ischemic brain. Meanwhile, it attenuated the expressions of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Also, NJBE significantly attenuated the expression levels of proinflammatory indicators, including TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-12. This process was accompanied by the downregulation of TLR4, TRAF6, pIκB/pIκB, and MMP9 expression and the upregulation of claudin-5 expression. NJBE induced improvements in brain injury. The neuroprotective effect of NJBE provides evidence for its potential application in stroke treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Natural products are valuable sources of nutraceuticals for the prevention or treatment of ischemic stroke, a major cause of death and severe disability worldwide. Among the mechanisms implicated in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion damage, oxidative stress exerts a pivotal role in disease progression. Given the high antioxidant potential of most components of sunflower oil, we have explored its effects on ischemic brain injury produced in the mouse by transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAo). KEY FINDINGS Intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of sunflower oil at doses of 3 ml/kg (48 h, 24 h and 1 h before MCAo) significantly reduced brain infarct volume and oedema assessed 24 h after the insult. This neuroprotective treatment schedule also prevented the elevation of brain lipid peroxidation produced by MCAo-reperfusion injury. By contrast, doses of 0.03 ml/kg of sunflower oil resulted ineffective on both cerebral damage and lipid peroxidation. Although sunflower oil did not affect serum levels of Diacron-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs), both 0.03 and 3 ml/kg dosing regimens resulted in the preservation of serum biological antioxidant potential (BAP) that was otherwise dramatically reduced 24 h after MCAo. CONCLUSIONS Sunflower oil represents a promising source of neuroprotective extracts/compounds that can be exploited for the prevention and/or treatment of cerebral ischemia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mediterranean diet (MeDiet) has been associated with lower risk of stroke. Additionally, animal models suggested that some components of MeDiet are associated with better outcomes after ischemic stroke (IS). We aimed to evaluate the association between global adherence to the MeDiet and the consumption of particular components of the MeDiet with stroke outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS Multicenter observational study of consecutive IS patients treated with endovascular therapy. Inclusion criteria were large anterior circulation vessel occlusion and pre-stroke modified Rankin scale (mRS) <2. Adherence to MeDiet prior to stroke was evaluated using MEDAS 14-item scale. We evaluated the total score and also individual components of the scale. Clinical, radiological, and prognostic variables were collected. Good functional prognosis was considered as mRS ≤2 and complete recanalization as thrombolysis in cerebral infarction 3. RESULTS From January 1 to October 30, 2018, 239 patients were included (mean age 71 years, 48% women, median baseline NIHSS 16). Median MEDAS scale was 8 points (7-10). Patients with a higher adherence to MeDiet had significantly lower total and LDL-cholesterol levels. Total adherence score was not associated with stroke outcomes. In multivariate analyses, consumption of olive oil as the principal source of fat was independently associated with good functional outcome at 3 months, OR 3.2 (1.1-10.1) and daily consumption of wine was independently associated with complete recanalization, OR 2.0 (1.1-3.8). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that some components of MeDiet, such as olive oil and wine consumption, are related to better prognosis after stroke. More studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is a brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation to the brain due to birth asphyxia or reduced cerebral blood perfusion, and it often leads to lifelong limiting sequelae such as cerebral palsy, seizures, or mental retardation. HI remains one of the leading causes of neonatal mortality and morbidity worldwide, and current therapies are limited. Hypothermia has been successful in reducing mortality and some disabilities, but it is only applied to a subset of newborns that meet strict inclusion criteria. Given the unpredictable nature of the obstetric complications that contribute to neonatal HI, prophylactic treatments that prevent, rather than rescue, HI brain injury are emerging as a therapeutic alternative. Nutraceuticals are natural compounds present in the diet or used as dietary supplements that have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, or antiapoptotic properties. This review summarizes the preclinical in vivo studies, mostly conducted on rodent models, that have investigated the neuroprotective properties of nutraceuticals in preventing and reducing HI-induced brain damage and cognitive impairments. The natural products reviewed include polyphenols, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, plant-derived compounds (tanshinones, sulforaphane, and capsaicin), and endogenous compounds (melatonin, carnitine, creatine, and lactate). These nutraceuticals were administered before the damage occurred, either to the mothers as a dietary supplement during pregnancy and/or lactation or to the pups prior to HI induction. To date, very few of these nutritional interventions have been investigated in humans, but we refer to those that have been successful in reducing ischemic stroke in adults. Overall, there is a robust body of preclinical evidence that supports the neuroprotective properties of nutraceuticals, and these may represent a safe and inexpensive nutritional strategy for the prevention of neonatal HI encephalopathy.

Abstract
Dietary habits are considered a leading behavioral risk factor for human health. There is growing scientific evidence suggesting that diet and sleep may be related. The aim of this study was to review the evidence of association between diet and sleep quality. A systematic search in electronic databases PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was conducted from their inception to November 2019. Studies investigating parameters of diet quality (including dietary patterns or individual healthy/unhealthy foods) and sleep quality (assessed through self-reported or objective methods) were included. The NIH Quality Assessment Tools were used to evaluate the study quality. Twenty-nine studies were reviewed: in summary, consumption of healthy foods was associated with better sleep quality, while higher intake of processed and free-sugar rich foods was associated with worse sleep features. Despite a certain consistency between studies have been observed, the overall poor-to-fair quality of study design (mostly represented by cross-sectional investigations) does not allow to conclude a causal relation. However, diet-related variables are associated with sleep quality, but further studies are needed to corroborate this finding.

Abstract
Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified more than 20 genetic loci as risk predictors associated with stroke. However, these studies were generally performed for single-trait and failed to consider the pleiotropic effects of these risk genes among the multiple risk factors for stroke. In this study, we applied a novel metaCCA method followed by gene-based VEGAS2 analysis to identify the risk genes for stroke that may overlap between seven correlated risk factors (including atrial fibrillation, hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, diabetes, body mass index, and total cholesterol level) by integrating seven corresponding GWAS data. We detected 20 potential pleiotropic genes that may be associated with multiple risk factors of stroke. Furthermore, using gene-to-trait pathway analysis, we suggested six potential risk genes (FUT8, GMIP, PLA2G6, PDE3A, SMARCA4, SKAPT) that may affect ischemic or hemorrhage stroke through multiple intermediate factors such as MAPK family. These findings provide novel insight into the genetic determinants contributing to the concurrent development of biological conditions that may influence stroke susceptibility, and also indicate some potential therapeutic targets that can be further studied for the prevention of cerebrovascular disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, few studies have thoroughly investigated the socioeconomic factors related to sleep problems among evacuees following a disaster. OBJECTIVES To examine sleep problems in evacuees using data from a large-scale cohort survey of evacuees conducted after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE). METHODS In sum, 73,433 residents who were living in evacuation zones responded to The 2011 Fukushima Health Management Survey. We excluded 16,659 participants who did not answer the question about sleep problems or those younger than 20 years. Thus, data from 56,774 participants (24,959 men and 31,815 women) were used for this analysis. Evacuees' self-reported sleep dissatisfaction was determined based on their response to the question 'Are you satisfied with the quality of your sleep? '. The response options 'Unsatisfied' and 'Very unsatisfied' were considered as the outcome for the present study. Prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the prevalence of self-reported sleep disturbance were estimated using modified Poisson regression models. RESULTS Of the qualifying survey respondents, 20.3% (4387 men and 7128 women) reported sleep dissatisfaction. Compared with participants living in their own or a relative's home (PR = 1), those living in temporary housing or rental accommodation had a higher prevalence of sleep dissatisfaction (1.47; 95% CI 1.44-1.50 and 2.16; 95% CI 2.07-2.26 in men; 1.39; 95% CI 1.36-1.41 and 1.92; 95% CI 1.86-1.99 in women). Higher educational attainment was also associated with a higher prevalence of sleep dissatisfaction in men, as were job loss and decreased income in both men and women. CONCLUSION Self-reported sleep dissatisfaction after the GEJE was associated with a deteriorated socioeconomic status among evacuees. However, future longitudinal studies are warranted.

Abstract
Stroke is one of the leading causes of adult disability worldwide. After ischemic stroke, damaged tissue surrounding the irreversibly damaged core of the infarct, the penumbra, is still salvageable and is therefore a target for acute therapeutic strategies. The Mediterranean diet (MD) has been shown to lower stroke risk. MD is characterized by increased intake of extra-virgin olive oil, of which hydroxytyrosol (HT) is the foremost phenolic component. This study investigates the effect of an HT-enriched diet directly after stroke on regaining motor and cognitive functioning, MRI parameters, neuroinflammation, and neurogenesis. Stroke mice on an HT diet showed increased strength in the forepaws, as well as improved short-term recognition memory probably due to improvement in functional connectivity (FC). Moreover, mice on an HT diet showed increased cerebral blood flow (CBF) and also heightened expression of brain derived neurotrophic factor (Bdnf), indicating a novel neurogenic potential of HT. This result was additionally accompanied by an enhanced transcription of the postsynaptic marker postsynaptic density protein 95 (Psd-95) and by a decreased ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (IBA-1) level indicative of lower neuroinflammation. These results suggest that an HT-enriched diet could serve as a beneficial therapeutic approach to attenuate ischemic stroke-associated damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current evidence supports the central role of a subclinical, low-grade inflammation in a number of chronic illnesses and mental disorders; however, studies on sleep quality are scarce. The aim of this study was to test the association between the inflammatory potential of the diet and sleep quality in a cohort of Italian adults. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of baseline data of the Mediterranean healthy Eating, Aging, and Lifestyle (MEAL) study was conducted on 1936 individuals recruited in the urban area of Catania during 2014-2015 through random sampling. A food frequency questionnaire and other validated instruments were used to calculate the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) and assess sleep quality (Pittsburg sleep quality index). Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the association between exposure and outcome. RESULTS Individuals in the highest quartile of the DII were less likely to have adequate sleep quality (odds ratio (OR) = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.31, 0.78). Among individual domains of sleep quality, an association with the highest exposure category was found only for sleep latency (OR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.39, 0.93). CONCLUSIONS The inflammatory potential of the diet appears to be associated with sleep quality in adults. Interventions to improve diet quality might consider including a dietary component that aims to lower chronic systemic inflammation to prevent cognitive decline and improve sleep quality.

Abstract
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and while there is increasing evidence that a Mediterranean diet might decrease the risk of a stroke, the effects of dietary fat composition on stroke outcomes have not been fully explored. We hypothesize that the brain damage provoked by a stroke would be different depending on the source of dietary fat. To test this, male C57BL/6J mice were fed for 4 weeks with a standard low-fat diet (LFD), a high-fat diet (HFD) rich in saturated fatty acids (HFD-SFA), an HFD containing monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) from olive oil (HFD-OO), or an HFD containing MUFAs from olive oil plus polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) docosahexaenoic acid/eicosapentaenoic acid (DHA/EPA) (HFD-OO-ω3). These mice were then subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAo). Behavioural tests and histological analyses were performed 24 and/or 48 h after tMCAo in order to elucidate the impact of these diets with different fatty acid profiles on the ischemic lesion and on neurological functions. Mice fed with HFD-OO-ω3 displayed better histological outcomes after cerebral ischemia than mice that received an HFD-SFA or LFD. Furthermore, PUFA- and MUFA-enriched diets improved the motor function and neurological performance of ischemic mice relative to those fed with an LFD or HFD-SFA. These findings support the use of DHA/EPA-omega-3-fatty acid supplementation and olive oil as dietary source of MUFAs in order to reduce the damage and protect the brain when a stroke occurs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep quality has been associated with human health and diseases, including cognitive decline and dementia; however major determinants of sleep disorders are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between sleep quality and adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern in a sample of Italian adults. METHODS A total of 1936 individuals were recruited in the urban area of Catania during 2014-2015 through random sampling. A food frequency questionnaire and validated instruments were used to assess the adherence to the Mediterranean diet and sleep quality (Pittsburg sleep quality index). Multivariate logistic regressions were performed to determine the association between exposure and outcome. RESULTS A total of 1314 individuals (67.9% of the cohort) reported adequate sleep quality: for each point increase of the Mediterranean diet score, individuals were 10% more likely to have adequate sleep quality. In an additional analysis stratifying the sample by weight status, the association between sleep quality and high adherence to the Mediterranean diet was observed only among normal/overweight individuals but not in obese participants. CONCLUSIONS high adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with better sleep quality either toward direct effect on health or indirect effects through improvement of weight status.

Abstract
This study investigated the neuroprotective effect of juçara fruit extracts against glutamate-induced oxytosis in HT22 cells. Potential relationships between the extracts' polyphenolic composition and their protective/antioxidant capacities were also investigated. Experiments with the addition of either the crude methanolic extract or hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions 24 h before glutamate (pretreatment) and together with glutamate (co-treatment) were performed. At the concentration of 10 μg ml-1, the hexane and dichloromethane fractions were able to protect cells, both in pretreatment and co-treatment. These fractions presented the highest number of quantified polyphenolics (24 and 21, respectively) although the total levels were 63-fold higher in the dichloromethane fraction. Syringaldehyde, vanillin and 4-aminobenzoic, cinnamic, salicylic and syringic acids were found only in these fractions. The dichloromethane fraction presented higher 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging activity, while the butanol and ethyl acetate fractions showed higher ferric reducing antioxidant power. These results suggest juçara fruits extracts as promising for the reduction of the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Bioactive components, due in part to their epigenetic properties, are beneficial for preventing several human diseases including cerebrovascular pathologies. However, no clear demonstration supports the idea that these molecules still conserve their epigenetic effects when acting at very low concentrations reproducing the brain levels achieved after oral administration of a micronutrient supplement. In the present study, we used a cellular model of brain ischemia to investigate the neuroprotective and epigenetic activities of a commercially available micronutrient mixture (polyphenol-enriched micronutrient mixture, PMM) enriched in polyphenols ((-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate, quercetin, resveratrol), α-lipoic acid, vitamins, amino acids and other micronutrients. Mimicking the suggested dietary supplementation, primary cultures of mouse cortical neurons were pre-treated with PMM and then subjected to oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD). Pre-treatment with PMM amounts to provide bioactive components in the medium in the nanomolar range potently prevented neuronal cell death. The protection was associated with the deacetylation of the lysin 310 (K310) on NF-κB/RelA as well as the deacetylation of H3 histones at the promoter of Bim, a pro-apoptotic target of ac-RelA(K310) in brain ischemia. Epigenetic regulators known to shape the acetylation state of ac-RelA(K310) moiety are the histone acetyl transferase CBP/p300 and the class III histone deacetylase sirtuin-1. In view of that evidence, the protection we here report unveils the efficacy of bioactive components endowed with either inhibitory activity on CBP/p300 or stimulating activity on the AMP-activated protein kinase–sirtuin 1 pathway. Our results support a potential synergistic effect of micronutrients in the PMM, suggesting that the intake of a polyphenol-based micronutrient mixture can reduce neuronal vulnerability to stressful conditions at concentrations compatible with the predicted brain levels reached by a single constituent after an oral dose of PMM.

Abstract
The microbiome of the human body represents a symbiosis of microbial networks spanning multiple organ systems. Bacteria predominantly represent the diversity of human microbiota, but not to be forgotten are fungi, viruses, and protists. Mounting evidence points to the fact that the "microbial signature" is host-specific and relatively stable over time. As our understanding of the human microbiome and its relationship to the health of the host increases, it is becoming clear that many and perhaps most chronic conditions have a microbial involvement. The oral and gastrointestinal tract microbiome constitutes the bulk of the overall human microbial load, and thus presents unique opportunities for advancing human health prognosis, diagnosis, and therapy development. This review is an attempt to catalog a broad diversity of recent evidence and focus it toward opportunities for prevention and treatment of debilitating illnesses.

Abstract
To achieve success in developing more effective treatments for stroke, we need a better understanding in all aspects of stroke including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and post-stroke recovery and complications. The objective of this special issue is to bring to the readership of Neurochemistry International the latest developments and knowledge in a broad spectrum of areas of stroke research in both review and original research articles. Topics include neuroprotective diets, biomarkers used to aid clinical management, neurodegenerative as well as neuroprotective effects of the immune system, potential therapeutic targets, engineered growth factors that promote endogenous neuroregeneration, mechanisms of cerebral small vessel disease, and post stroke epilepsy.
