A parallel framework for simultaneous EEG/fMRI analysis: methodology and simulation

Optimizing EEG Source Reconstruction with Concurrent fMRI-Derived Spatial Priors

Reconstructing EEG sources involves a complex pipeline, with the inverse problem being the most challenging. Multiple inversion algorithms are being continuously developed, aiming to tackle the non-uniqueness of this problem, which has been shown to be partially circumvented by including prior information in the inverse models. Despite a few efforts, there are still current and persistent controversies regarding the inversion algorithm of choice and the optimal set of spatial priors to be included in the inversion models. The use of simultaneous EEG-fMRI data is one approach to tackle this problem. The spatial resolution of fMRI makes fMRI derived spatial priors very convenient for EEG reconstruction, however, only task activation maps and resting-state networks (RSNs) have been explored so far, overlooking the recent, but already accepted, notion that brain networks exhibit dynamic functional connectivity fluctuations. The lack of a systematic comparison between different source reconstruction algorithms, considering potentially more brain-informative priors such as fMRI, motivates the search for better reconstruction models. Using simultaneous EEG-fMRI data, here we compared four different inversion algorithms (minimum norm, MN; low resolution electromagnetic tomography, LORETA; empirical Bayes beamformer, EBB; and multiple sparse priors, MSP) under a Bayesian framework (as implemented in SPM), each with three different sets of priors consisting of: (1) those specific to the algorithm; (2) those specific to the algorithm plus fMRI task activation maps and RSNs; and (3) those specific to the algorithm plus fMRI task activation maps and RSNs and network modules of task-related dFC states estimated from the dFC fluctuations. The quality of the reconstructed EEG sources was quantified in terms of model-based metrics, namely the expectation of the posterior probability P(model|data) and variance explained of the inversion models, and the overlap/proportion of brain regions known to be involved in the visual perception tasks that the participants were submitted to, and RSN templates, with/within EEG source components. Model-based metrics suggested that model parsimony is preferred, with the combination MSP and priors specific to this algorithm exhibiting the best performance. However, optimal overlap/proportion values were found using EBB and priors specific to this algorithm and fMRI task activation maps and RSNs or MSP and considering all the priors (algorithm priors, fMRI task activation maps and RSNs and dFC state modules), respectively, indicating that fMRI spatial priors, including dFC state modules, might contain useful information to recover EEG source components reflecting neuronal activity of interest. Our main results show that providing fMRI spatial derived priors that reflect the dynamics of the brain might be useful to map neuronal activity more accurately from EEG-fMRI. Furthermore, this work paves the way towards a more informative selection of the optimal EEG source reconstruction approach, which may be critical in future studies.

A Comparative Study of Different EEG Reference Choices for Event-Related Potentials Extracted by Independent Component Analysis

In the event-related potential (ERP) of scalp electroencephalography (EEG) studies, the vertex reference (Cz), linked mastoids or ears (LM), and average reference (AVG) are popular reference methods, and the reference electrode standardization technique (REST) is increasingly applied. Because scalp EEG recordings are considered as spatially degraded signals, independent component analysis (ICA) is a widely used data-driven method for obtaining ERPs by decomposing EEG data. However, the accurate estimation of the differences in ERP components extracted by ICA with different references remains unclear. In this study, we first provided formal descriptions of the above reference methods (Cz, LM, AVG, and REST) and ICA decomposition in ERP and then investigated the influences of different reference techniques on simulation and real EEG datasets. The results revealed that (1) the reference method did not change the peak amplitudes and latencies of relative ERPs corresponding to some IC time courses; (2) there were non-negligible effects of different reference methods on both temporal ERPs and spatial topographies of some ICs; and (3) compared to Cz, LM, and AR, considering both the performances of temporal ERPs and spatial topographies, the REST reference had overall superiority. These findings provide a recommended choice of REST for ICA analysis at the trial level and contribute to empirical investigations regarding the use of reference methods in ERP domains with ICA analysis.

Altered Brain Functional Hubs and Connectivity Underlie Persistent Somatoform Pain Disorder

This study investigated the degree of brain functional impairment in persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) by examining changes in the patterns of brain functional hubs. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 21 PSPD patients with headache as the main symptom and 17 sex- and age-matched healthy controls. Degree centrality (DC) analysis as well as the connectivity among these hubs by functional connectivity (FC) analysis and Granger causality analysis (GCA) were performed to characterize abnormal brain networks in PSPD (Gaussian random field corrected: P < 0.001, Z > 3.09). The relationships between DC and connectivity and clinical parameters were also examined. DC values in the bilateral inferior occipital gyrus (IOG), bilateral calcarine fissure (CAL), and left paracentral lobule (PCL) and FC values of right IOG–left CAL, right IOG–right CAL, right IOG–left IOG, left CAL–right CAL, left CAL–left IOG, left CAL–left PCL, right CAL–left PCL, and left IOG–left PCL were lower in PSPD patients as compared to controls. A negative causal effect from the left CAL to the left paracentral lobule and a positive effect from the right CAL to the right IOG were observed in PSPD patients. Abnormal DC, FC, and signed-path coefficients in PSPD patients were negatively correlated with self-rating anxiety and depression scale scores. These results indicate that altered functional hubs and connectivity patterns in the somatosensory cortex may reflect emotional disturbance in PSPD patients.

Constrained temporal parallel decomposition for EEG-fMRI fusion

OBJECTIVE

Multimodal neuroimaging has become a common practice in neuroscience research. Simultaneous EEG-fMRI is a popular multimodal recording approach due to the complementary spatiotemporal relationship between the two modalities. Several data fusion techniques have been proposed in the literature for EEG-fMRI fusion, including joint-ICA and parallel-ICA frameworks. Previous EEG-fMRI fusion approaches have used sensor-level EEG features. Recently, we introduced source-space ICA for EEG-MEG source reconstruction and component identification, which was shown to be a superior alternative to sensor-space ICA.

APPROACH

Here, we extend source-space ICA to the fusion of EEG-fMRI data. Additionally, we incorporate the use of a paradigm signal (constrained) and a lag-based signal decomposition approach to accommodate recent findings demonstrating the potentially variable lag structure between electrophysiological and BOLD signals. We evaluated this method on simulated concurrent EEG-fMRI during a boxcar task design, as well as real concurrent EEG-fMRI data from three participants performing an N-Back working memory task. The block diagram of the algorithm and corresponding source codes are provided.

MAIN RESULTS

Based on the results of the real working memory task, for all three subjects, one frontal theta component, and one right posterior alpha component had the highest contribution coefficients (~0.5) to the paradigm-related fused component. There were also two more alpha band components with contribution coefficients of 0.3. The highest contributing fMRI component (~0.8) was one known in the literature to be related to the attention network. The second fMRI component was related to the well-known default mode network, with a contribution coefficient of 0.3.

SIGNIFICANCE

The proposed EEG-fMRI fusion approach, is capable of estimating the brain maps of the EEG and fMRI for the fused components and account for the variable lag structure between electrophysiological and BOLD signals.

Multimodal approaches to functional connectivity in autism spectrum disorders: An integrative perspective

Atypical functional connectivity has been implicated in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). However, the literature to date has been largely inconsistent, with mixed and conflicting reports of hypo- and hyper-connectivity. These discrepancies are partly due to differences between various neuroimaging modalities. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and magnetoencephalography (MEG) measure distinct indices of functional connectivity (e.g., blood-oxygenation level-dependent [BOLD] signal vs. electrical activity). Furthermore, each method has unique benefits and disadvantages with respect to spatial and temporal resolution, vulnerability to specific artifacts, and practical implementation. Thus far, functional connectivity research on ASDs has remained almost exclusively unimodal; therefore, interpreting findings across modalities remains a challenge. Multimodal integration of fMRI, EEG, and MEG data is critical in resolving discrepancies in the literature, and working toward a unifying framework for interpreting past and future findings. This review aims to provide a theoretical foundation for future multimodal research on ASDs. First, we will discuss the merits and shortcomings of several popular theories in ASD functional connectivity research, using examples from the literature to date. Next, the neurophysiological relationships between imaging modalities, including their relationship with invasive neural recordings, will be reviewed. Finally, methodological approaches to multimodal data integration will be presented, and their future application to ASDs will be discussed. Analyses relating transient patterns of neural activity ("states") are particularly promising. This strategy provides a comparable measure across modalities, captures complex spatiotemporal patterns, and is a natural extension of recent dynamic fMRI research in ASDs. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single-trial EEG-informed fMRI analysis of emotional decision problems in hot executive function

BACKGROUND

Executive function refers to conscious control in psychological process which relates to thinking and action. Emotional decision is a part of hot executive function and contains emotion and logic elements. As a kind of important social adaptation ability, more and more attention has been paid in recent years.

OBJECTIVE

Gambling task can be well performed in the study of emotional decision. As fMRI researches focused on gambling task show not completely consistent brain activation regions, this study adopted EEG-fMRI fusion technology to reveal brain neural activity related with feedback stimuli.

METHODS

In this study, an EEG-informed fMRI analysis was applied to process simultaneous EEG-fMRI data. First, relative power-spectrum analysis and K-means clustering method were performed separately to extract EEG-fMRI features. Then, Generalized linear models were structured using fMRI data and using different EEG features as regressors.

RESULTS

The results showed that in the win versus loss stimuli, the activated regions almost covered the caudate, the ventral striatum (VS), the orbital frontal cortex (OFC), and the cingulate. Wide activation areas associated with reward and punishment were revealed by the EEG-fMRI integration analysis than the conventional fMRI results, such as the posterior cingulate and the OFC. The VS and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) were found when EEG power features were performed as regressors of GLM compared with results entering the amplitudes of feedback-related negativity (FRN) as regressors. Furthermore, the brain region activation intensity was the strongest when theta-band power was used as a regressor compared with the other two fusion results.

CONCLUSIONS

The EEG-based fMRI analysis can more accurately depict the whole-brain activation map and analyze emotional decision problems.

Functional neuroimaging of extraversion-introversion

Neuroimaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography have provided an unprecedented neurobiological perspective for research on personality traits. Evidence from task-related neuroimaging has shown that extraversion is associated with activations in regions of the anterior cingulate cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, middle temporal gyrus and the amygdala. Currently, resting-state neuroimaging is being widely used in cognitive neuroscience. Initial exploration of extraversion has revealed correlations with the medial prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, insular cortex, and the precuneus. Recent research work has indicated that the long-range temporal dependence of the resting-state spontaneous oscillation has high test-retest reliability. Moreover, the long-range temporal dependence of the resting-state networks is highly correlated with personality traits, and this can be used for the prediction of extraversion. As the long-range temporal dependence reflects real-time information updating in individuals, this method may provide a new approach to research on personality traits.

Incorporating priors for EEG source imaging and connectivity analysis

Electroencephalography source imaging (ESI) is a useful technique to localize the generators from a given scalp electric measurement and to investigate the temporal dynamics of the large-scale neural circuits. By introducing reasonable priors from other modalities, ESI reveals the most probable sources and communication structures at every moment in time. Here, we review the available priors from such techniques as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI (fMRI), and positron emission tomography (PET). The modality's specific contribution is analyzed from the perspective of source reconstruction. For spatial priors, EEG-correlated fMRI, temporally coherent networks (TCNs) and resting-state fMRI are systematically introduced in the ESI. Moreover, the fiber tracking (diffusion tensor imaging, DTI) and neuro-stimulation techniques (transcranial magnetic stimulation, TMS) are also introduced as the potential priors, which can help to draw inferences about the neuroelectric connectivity in the source space. We conclude that combining EEG source imaging with other complementary modalities is a promising approach toward the study of brain networks in cognitive and clinical neurosciences.

Characterizing nonlinear relationships in functional imaging data using eigenspace maximal information canonical correlation analysis (emiCCA)

Many important problems in the analysis of neuroimages can be formulated as discovering the relationship between two sets of variables, a task for which linear techniques such as canonical correlation analysis (CCA) have been commonly used. However, to further explore potential nonlinear processes that might co-exist with linear ones in brain function, a more flexible method is required. Here, we propose a new unsupervised and data-driven method, termed the eigenspace maximal information canonical correlation analysis (emiCCA), which is capable of automatically capturing the linear and/or nonlinear relationships between various data sets. A simulation confirmed the superior performance of emiCCA in comparison with linear CCA and kernel CCA (a nonlinear version of CCA). An emiCCA framework for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data processing was designed and applied to data from a real motor execution fMRI experiment. This analysis uncovered one linear (in primary motor cortex) and a few nonlinear networks (e.g., in the supplementary motor area, bilateral insula, and cerebellum). This suggests that these various task-related brain areas are part of networks that also contribute to the execution of movements of the hand. These results suggest that emiCCA is a promising technique for exploring various data.

Competition between frontoparietal control and default networks supports social working memory and empathy

An extensive body of literature has indicated that there is increased activity in the frontoparietal control network (FPC) and decreased activity in the default mode network (DMN) during working memory (WM) tasks. The FPC and DMN operate in a competitive relationship during tasks requiring externally directed attention. However, the association between this FPC-DMN competition and performance in social WM tasks has rarely been reported in previous studies. To investigate this question, we measured FPC-DMN connectivity during resting state and two emotional face recognition WM tasks using the 2-back paradigm. Thirty-four individuals were instructed to perform the tasks based on either the expression [emotion (EMO)] or the identity (ID) of the same set of face stimuli. Consistent with previous studies, an increased anti-correlation between the FPC and DMN was observed during both tasks relative to the resting state. Specifically, this anti-correlation during the EMO task was stronger than during the ID task, as the former has a higher social load. Intriguingly, individual differences in self-reported empathy were significantly correlated with the FPC-DMN anti-correlation in the EMO task. These results indicate that the top-down signals from the FPC suppress the DMN to support social WM and empathy.

Simultaneous EEG-fMRI: trial level spatio-temporal fusion for hierarchically reliable information discovery

Simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have been pursued in an effort to integrate complementary noninvasive information on brain activity. The primary goal involves better information discovery of the event-related neural activations at a spatial region of the BOLD fluctuation with the temporal resolution of the electrical signal. Many techniques and algorithms have been developed to integrate EEGs and fMRIs; however, the relative reliability of the integrated information is unclear. In this work, we propose a hierarchical framework to ensure the relative reliability of the integrated results and attempt to understand brain activation using this hierarchical ideal. First, spatial Independent Component Analysis (ICA) of fMRI and temporal ICA of EEG were performed to extract features at the trial level. Second, the maximal information coefficient (MIC) was adopted to temporally match them across the modalities for both linear and non-linear associations. Third, fMRI-constrained EEG source imaging was utilized to spatially match components across modalities. The simultaneously occurring events in the above two match steps provided EEG-fMRI spatial-temporal reliable integrated information, resulting in the most reliable components with high spatial and temporal resolution information. The other components discovered in the second or third steps provided second-level complementary information for flexible and cautious explanations. This paper contains two simulations and an example of real data, and the results indicate that the framework is a feasible approach to reveal cognitive processing in the human brain.

[Simultaneous EEG-fMRI measurements: insights in applications and challenges]

BACKGROUND

The following article presents an introduction to simultaneous electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG-fMRI) measurements which have undergone a huge development during the last few years.

OBJECTIVES

The idea behind combining both non-invasive methods is to join the excellent temporal resolution of EEG (ms) together with the superior spatial resolution of fMRI (mm). In this article the status quo of the method and perspectives regarding multimodal imaging are discussed.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Simultaneous EEG-fMRI measurements are affected by scanner and cardioballistic artifacts. We present common artifact subtraction methods in order to achieve a feasible data quality and outline what to consider when planning and recording EEG and fMRI simultaneously. Moreover, we discuss different analysis strategies.

RESULTS

Combined EEG-fMRI measurements have already increased our knowledge about the underlying relationships between the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) response and the EEG signal and are applied to answer widespread research questions. Simultaneous measurements are an essential part of multimodal imaging in investigating the underlying processing mechanisms of the brain as well as in advancing our understanding of neuropsychiatric diseases.

CONCLUSIONS

Current developments in multimodal imaging focus on the combination of electrophysiological and MRI parameters within ultra-high field MRI as well as on positron emission tomography (PET) in a trimodal approach.

Non-negative matrix factorization of multimodal MRI, fMRI and phenotypic data reveals differential changes in default mode subnetworks in ADHD

In the multimodal neuroimaging framework, data on a single subject are collected from inherently different sources such as functional MRI, structural MRI, behavioral and/or phenotypic information. The information each source provides is not independent; a subset of features from each modality maps to one or more common latent dimensions, which can be interpreted using generative models. These latent dimensions, or "topics," provide a sparse summary of the generative process behind the features for each individual. Topic modeling, an unsupervised generative model, has been used to map seemingly disparate features to a common domain. We use Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) to infer the latent structure of multimodal ADHD data containing fMRI, MRI, phenotypic and behavioral measurements. We compare four different NMF algorithms and find that the sparsest decomposition is also the most differentiating between ADHD and healthy patients. We identify dimensions that map to interpretable, recognizable dimensions such as motion, default mode network activity, and other such features of the input data. For example, structural and functional graph theory features related to default mode subnetworks clustered with the ADHD-Inattentive diagnosis. Structural measurements of the default mode network (DMN) regions such as the posterior cingulate, precuneus, and parahippocampal regions were all related to the ADHD-Inattentive diagnosis. Ventral DMN subnetworks may have more functional connections in ADHD-I, while dorsal DMN may have less. ADHD topics are dependent upon diagnostic site, suggesting diagnostic differences across geographic locations. We assess our findings in light of the ADHD-200 classification competition, and contrast our unsupervised, nominated topics with previously published supervised learning methods. Finally, we demonstrate the validity of these latent variables as biomarkers by using them for classification of ADHD in 730 patients. Cumulatively, this manuscript addresses how multimodal data in ADHD can be interpreted by latent dimensions.

Neuronal oscillations and functional interactions between resting state networks

Functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) studies showed that resting state activity in the healthy brain is organized into multiple large-scale networks encompassing distant regions. A key finding of resting state fMRI studies is the anti-correlation typically observed between the dorsal attention network (DAN) and the default mode network (DMN), which - during task performance - are activated and deactivated, respectively. Previous studies have suggested that alcohol administration modulates the balance of activation/deactivation in brain networks, as well as it induces significant changes in oscillatory activity measured by electroencephalography (EEG). However, our knowledge of alcohol-induced changes in band-limited EEG power and their potential link with the functional interactions between DAN and DMN is still very limited. Here we address this issue, examining the neuronal effects of alcohol administration during resting state by using simultaneous EEG-fMRI. Our findings show increased EEG power in the theta frequency band (4-8 Hz) after administration of alcohol compared to placebo, which was prominent over the frontal cortex. More interestingly, increased frontal tonic EEG activity in this band was associated with greater anti-correlation between the DAN and the frontal component of the DMN. Furthermore, EEG theta power and DAN-DMN anti-correlation were relatively greater in subjects who reported a feeling of euphoria after alcohol administration, which may result from a diminished inhibition exerted by the prefrontal cortex. Overall, our findings suggest that slow brain rhythms are responsible for dynamic functional interactions between brain networks. They also confirm the applicability and potential usefulness of EEG-fMRI for central nervous system drug research.

A review of EEG and MEG for brainnetome research

The majority of brain activities are performed by functionally integrating separate regions of the brain. Therefore, the synchronous operation of the brain's multiple regions or neuronal assemblies can be represented as a network with nodes that are interconnected by links. Because of the complexity of brain interactions and their varying effects at different levels of complexity, one of the corresponding authors of this paper recently proposed the brainnetome as a new -ome to explore and integrate the brain network at different scales. Because electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) are noninvasive and have outstanding temporal resolution and because they are the primary clinical techniques used to capture the dynamics of neuronal connections, they lend themselves to the analysis of the neural networks comprising the brainnetome. Because of EEG/MEG's applicability to brainnetome analyses, the aim of this review is to identify the procedures that can be used to form a network using EEG/MEG data in sensor or source space and to promote EEG/MEG network analysis for either neuroscience or clinical applications. To accomplish this aim, we show the relationship of the brainnetome to brain networks at the macroscale and provide a systematic review of network construction using EEG and MEG. Some potential applications of the EEG/MEG brainnetome are to use newly developed methods to associate the properties of a brainnetome with indices of cognition or disease conditions. Associations based on EEG/MEG brainnetome analysis may improve the comprehension of the functioning of the brain in neuroscience research or the recognition of abnormal patterns in neurological disease.

BICAR: a new algorithm for multiresolution spatiotemporal data fusion

We introduce a method for spatiotemporal data fusion and demonstrate its performance on three constructed data sets: one entirely simulated, one with temporal speech signals and simulated spatial images, and another with recorded music time series and astronomical images defining the spatial patterns. Each case study is constructed to present specific challenges to test the method and demonstrate its capabilities. Our algorithm, BICAR (Bidirectional Independent Component Averaged Representation), is based on independent component analysis (ICA) and extracts pairs of temporal and spatial sources from two data matrices with arbitrarily different spatiotemporal resolution. We pair the temporal and spatial sources using a physical transfer function that connects the dynamics of the two. BICAR produces a hierarchy of sources ranked according to reproducibility; we show that sources which are more reproducible are more similar to true (known) sources. BICAR is robust to added noise, even in a "worst case" scenario where all physical sources are equally noisy. BICAR is also relatively robust to misspecification of the transfer function. BICAR holds promise as a useful data-driven assimilation method in neuroscience, earth science, astronomy, and other signal processing domains.

Scale-free brain-wave music from simultaneously EEG and fMRI recordings

In the past years, a few methods have been developed to translate human EEG to music. In 2009, PloS One 4 e5915, we developed a method to generate scale-free brainwave music where the amplitude of EEG was translated to music pitch according to the power law followed by both of them, the period of an EEG waveform is translated directly to the duration of a note, and the logarithm of the average power change of EEG is translated to music intensity according to the Fechner's law. In this work, we proposed to adopt simultaneously-recorded fMRI signal to control the intensity of the EEG music, thus an EEG-fMRI music is generated by combining two different and simultaneous brain signals. And most importantly, this approach further realized power law for music intensity as fMRI signal follows it. Thus the EEG-fMRI music makes a step ahead in reflecting the physiological process of the scale-free brain.

EEG/fMRI fusion based on independent component analysis: integration of data-driven and model-driven methods

Simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provide complementary noninvasive information of brain activity, and EEG/fMRI fusion can achieve higher spatiotemporal resolution than each modality separately. This focuses on independent component analysis (ICA)-based EEG/fMRI fusion. In order to appreciate the issues, we first describe the potential and limitations of the developed fusion approaches: fMRI-constrained EEG imaging, EEG-informed fMRI analysis, and symmetric fusion. We then outline some newly developed hybrid fusion techniques using ICA and the combination of data-/model-driven methods, with special mention of the spatiotemporal EEG/fMRI fusion (STEFF). Finally, we discuss the current trend in methodological development and the existing limitations for extrapolating neural dynamics.

How ignoring physiological noise can bias the conclusions from fMRI simulation results

Neuroimaging researchers use simulation studies to validate their statistical methods because it is acknowledged that this is the most feasible way to know the ground truth of the data. The noise model used in these studies typically varies from a simple Gaussian distribution to an estimate of the noise distribution from real data. However, although several studies point out the presence of physiological noise in fMRI data, this noise source is currently lacking in simulation studies. Therefore, we explored the impact of adding physiological noise to the simulated data. For several experimental designs, fMRI data were generated under different noise models while the signal-to-noise ratio was kept constant. The sensitivity and specificity of a standard statistical parametric mapping (SPM) analysis were determined by comparing the known activation with the detected activation. We show that by including physiological noise in the data generation process, the simulation results in terms of sensitivity and specificity drop dramatically. Additionally, we used the new proposed simulation model to compare a standard SPM analysis against the method proposed by Cabella et al. (2009). The results indicate that the analysis of data containing no physiological noise yields a better performance of the SPM analysis. However, if physiological noise is included in the data, the sensitivity and specificity of the Cabella method are higher compared to the SPM analysis. Based on these results, we argue that the results of current simulation studies are likely to be biased, especially when analysis methods are compared using ROC curves.

Disrupted functional brain connectivity in partial epilepsy: a resting-state fMRI study

Examining the spontaneous activity to understand the neural mechanism of brain disorder is a focus in recent resting-state fMRI. In the current study, to investigate the alteration of brain functional connectivity in partial epilepsy in a systematical way, two levels of analyses (functional connectivity analysis within resting state networks (RSNs) and functional network connectivity (FNC) analysis) were carried out on resting-state fMRI data acquired from the 30 participants including 14 healthy controls(HC) and 16 partial epilepsy patients. According to the etiology, all patients are subdivided into temporal lobe epilepsy group (TLE, included 7 patients) and mixed partial epilepsy group (MPE, 9 patients). Using group independent component analysis, eight RSNs were identified, and selected to evaluate functional connectivity and FNC between groups. Compared with the controls, decreased functional connectivity within all RSNs was found in both TLE and MPE. However, dissociating patterns were observed within the 8 RSNs between two patient groups, i.e, compared with TLE, we found decreased functional connectivity in 5 RSNs increased functional connectivity in 1 RSN, and no difference in the other 2 RSNs in MPE. Furthermore, the hierarchical disconnections of FNC was found in two patient groups, in which the intra-system connections were preserved for all three subsystems while the lost connections were confined to intersystem connections in patients with partial epilepsy. These findings may suggest that decreased resting state functional connectivity and disconnection of FNC are two remarkable characteristics of partial epilepsy. The selective impairment of FNC implicated that it is unsuitable to understand the partial epilepsy only from global or local perspective. We presumed that studying epilepsy in the multi-perspective based on RSNs may be a valuable means to assess the functional changes corresponding to specific RSN and may contribute to the understanding of the neuro-pathophysiological mechanism of epilepsy.

Multimodal functional network connectivity: an EEG-fMRI fusion in network space

EEG and fMRI recordings measure the functional activity of multiple coherent networks distributed in the cerebral cortex. Identifying network interaction from the complementary neuroelectric and hemodynamic signals may help to explain the complex relationships between different brain regions. In this paper, multimodal functional network connectivity (mFNC) is proposed for the fusion of EEG and fMRI in network space. First, functional networks (FNs) are extracted using spatial independent component analysis (ICA) in each modality separately. Then the interactions among FNs in each modality are explored by Granger causality analysis (GCA). Finally, fMRI FNs are matched to EEG FNs in the spatial domain using network-based source imaging (NESOI). Investigations of both synthetic and real data demonstrate that mFNC has the potential to reveal the underlying neural networks of each modality separately and in their combination. With mFNC, comprehensive relationships among FNs might be unveiled for the deep exploration of neural activities and metabolic responses in a specific task or neurological state.

fMRI functional networks for EEG source imaging

The brain exhibits temporally coherent networks (TCNs) involving numerous cortical and sub-cortical regions both during the rest state and during the performance of cognitive tasks. TCNs represent the interactions between different brain areas, and understanding such networks may facilitate electroencephalography (EEG) source estimation. We propose a new method for examining TCNs using scalp EEG in conjunction with data obtained by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In this approach, termed NEtwork based SOurce Imaging (NESOI), multiple TCNs derived from fMRI with independent component analysis (ICA) are used as the covariance priors of the EEG source reconstruction using Parametric Empirical Bayesian (PEB). In contrast to previous applications of PEB in EEG source imaging with smoothness or sparseness priors, TCNs play a fundamental role among the priors used by NESOI. NESOI achieves an efficient integration of the high temporal resolution EEG and TCN derived from the high spatial resolution fMRI. Using synthetic and real data, we directly compared the performance of NESOI with other distributed source inversion methods, with and without the use of fMRI priors. Our results indicated that NESOI is a potentially useful approach for EEG source imaging.

Incorporating FMRI functional networks in EEG source imaging: a Bayesian model comparison approach

Brain functional networks extracted from fMRI can improve the accuracy of EEG source localization. However, the coupling between EEG and fMRI remains poorly understood, i.e., whether fMRI networks provide information about the magnitude of neural activity, and whether neural sources demonstrate temporal correlations within each network. In this paper, we present an improved version of the NEtwork-based SOurce Imaging method (iNESOI) through Bayesian model comparison. Different models correspond to various matching between EEG and fMRI, and the appropriate one is selected by data with the model evidence. Synthetic and real data tests show that iNESOI has potential to select the appropriate fMRI priors to reach a better source reconstruction than some other typical approaches.

On consciousness, resting state fMRI, and neurodynamics

BACKGROUND

During the last years, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the brain has been introduced as a new tool to measure consciousness, both in a clinical setting and in a basic neurocognitive research. Moreover, advanced mathematical methods and theories have arrived the field of fMRI (e.g. computational neuroimaging), and functional and structural brain connectivity can now be assessed non-invasively.

RESULTS

The present work deals with a pluralistic approach to "consciousness'', where we connect theory and tools from three quite different disciplines: (1) philosophy of mind (emergentism and global workspace theory), (2) functional neuroimaging acquisitions, and (3) theory of deterministic and statistical neurodynamics - in particular the Wilson-Cowan model and stochastic resonance.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on recent experimental and theoretical work, we believe that the study of large-scale neuronal processes (activity fluctuations, state transitions) that goes on in the living human brain while examined with functional MRI during "resting state", can deepen our understanding of graded consciousness in a clinical setting, and clarify the concept of "consiousness" in neurocognitive and neurophilosophy research.
