Advanced Insights into Walnut Protein: Structure, Physiochemical Properties and Applications

Facing extreme pressure from an increasing population and climate degeneration, it is important to explore a green, safe and environmentally sustainable food source, especially for protein-enriched diets. Plant proteins have gained much attention in recent years, ascribing to their high nutritional value and environmental friendliness. In this review, we summarized recent advances in walnut protein with respect to its geographical distribution, structural and physiochemical properties and functional attributes. As a worldwide cultivated and largely consumptive crop, allergies and some physicochemical limitations have also led to a few concerns about walnut protein. Through comprehensive analysis and discussion, some strategies may be useful for future research, extraction and processing of walnut protein.

Supplementation of Bovine Colostrum in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Benefits and Contraindications

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic relapsing disorders whose etiology has not been fully explained. Therefore, available therapeutic approaches for IBD patients are still insufficient. Current treatment strategies are targeted to immune system dysfunctions, often associated with alternations in the microbiota, which contribute to the development of chronic intestinal inflammation. Therapeutics include anti-inflammatory drugs such as aminosalicylates and corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents, antibiotics, and biological agents such as infliximab and vedolizumab. Auxiliary therapies involve a balanced and personalized diet, healthy lifestyle, avoiding stress, as well as dietary supplements. In this review, we discuss the use of bovine colostrum (BC) as a therapeutic agent, including its advantages and contraindications. We summarize our knowledge on well-researched BC constituents and their effects on the gastrointestinal tract as evidenced in in vitro and in vivo studies.

Isolation and Characterization of NP-POL Nonapeptide for Possible Therapeutic Use in Parkinson's Disease

Colostrum and milk are the initial mammalian nourishment and rich reservoir of essential nutrients for newborn development. Bioactive peptides isolated from natural sources, such as colostrum, serve as endogenous regulators and can be used as alternative therapeutic agents in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. One example is the previously unknown NP-POL nonapeptide isolated from Colostrinin. In the present study, we investigated a method of NP-POL nonapeptide isolation using Bio-Gel P2 molecular sieve chromatography. We showed the protective effect of NP-POL on 6-hydroxydopamine- (6-OHDA-) induced neurotoxicity using rat adrenal pheochromocytoma (PC12 Tet On) cells. Treatment of PC12 cells with NP-POL nonapeptide reduced 6-OHDA-induced apoptosis and caused transient phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK 1/2), which were shown to promote cell survival. NP-POL nonapeptide also protected neuronal cells against oxidative injury induced by 6-OHDA. These results showed a potential use of NP-POL in the therapy of Parkinson's disease.

Dietary L-proline supplementation confers immunostimulatory effects on inactivated Pasteurella multocida vaccine immunized mice

This study was conducted to determine the immunostimulatory effect of L-proline on inactivated vaccine immunized mice. Ninety-five female KM mice were randomly divided into five groups: (1) mice received dietary supplementation with 0.4% L-proline and immunized with inactivated vaccine (V-P group); (2) mice received dietary supplementation with 0.3% L-alanine (isonitrogenous control) and immunized with inactivated vaccine (V-A group, negative control); (3) mice were immunized with inactivated vaccine with oil adjuvant (V-O group, positive control); (4) mice were immunized with inactivated vaccine with aluminum hydroxide adjuvant (V-H group, positive control); (5) mice immunized with phosphate-buffered saline (control group). All mice were dead in the control group between 36 and 48 h post infection. Mice in the V-P group showed 100% protection after challenge with P. multocida serotype A (CQ2) at dose of 4.4 × 10(5) CFU (2LD50). Meanwhile, serum antibody titers in the V-P group were higher than those in the V-A group before infection and those in the V-A and V-O groups at 36 h post infection. Moreover, serum IL-1β levels in the V-P group were lower than those in V-O group. Furthermore, serum GSH-PX levels in the V-P group were higher than those in the V-A and V-O groups. Collectively, dietary proline supplementation confers beneficial immunostimulatory effects in inactivated P. multocida vaccine immunized mice.
