Abstract
Introduction Metabolic syndrome is a global health concern. It is a condition that includes a cluster of various risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This quasi-experimental study investigates the effect of a nurse-led low-carbohydrate regimen on anthropometric and laboratory parameters in metabolic syndrome patients. Methods The study used a quasi-experimental design conducted at the University of Mosul; 128 participants meeting the metabolic syndrome criteria were recruited and divided into the intervention and control groups. The intervention group received personalized counseling and support in implementing a low-carb regime, while the control group received standard advice. The study participants were assessed by anthropometry, and laboratory parameters were evaluated pre- and post-intervention. Statistical data analysis was conducted using IBM-SPSS 27, including chi-square, Fisher's exact test, t-tests, and the Mcnemar test, which were performed to compare the changes within and between groups. Results The mean age of the participants in the intervention and control groups was 50.72 ± 6.43 years and 49.14 ± 6.89 years, respectively. Compared to the control group, the intervention group experienced a significant positive reduction in anthropometric measures and laboratory parameters, including weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, lipid profiles, and HbA1c. Conclusion A tangible effect of nurse-led interventions based on low-carbohydrate regimens in managing metabolic syndrome was empirically authenticated. Positive changes were observed in the intervention group regarding anthropometric measures and laboratory parameters. However, future research may require a larger sample size and a longer follow-up to confirm these effects and evaluate long-term metabolic impacts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim was to ascertain whether low-carbohydrate-diet (LCD) score and dietary macronutrient intake are associated with depression. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 23,204 United States adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018. Dietary macronutrient intake was evaluated by the average of two 24-h dietary recall interviews. LCD score was calculated by summing the 11 quantiles values of the percentages of energy derived from carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Major depression was defined as a nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire score of 10 or more. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were used to explore the relationship between LCD score, dietary macronutrient intake, and depression. RESULTS LCD score was significantly associated with the risk of depression after adjustment for covariates (odds ratio, 0.98; 95 % confidence interval, 0.97-0.99; p < 0.001). Restricted cubic splines showed that the pattern of this inverse association was nonlinear. Among macronutrients, carbohydrate and protein intake was nonlinearly associated with the risk of depression, whereas fat intake was not related to the risk of depression. A decreased risk of depression was observed when the carbohydrate intake was moderate (45.3 %-59.1 %). The pattern of the association between protein intake and the risk of depression was L-shaped. CONCLUSIONS LCD score was inversely associated with the risk of depression in a nonlinear manner in a nationally representative sample of adults from the United States. Furthermore, moderate carbohydrate intake and high protein intake were correlated with a lower risk of depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Carbohydrates are the primary energy source in Asian countries, including Iran. An emerging method can be used to measure the quality of carbohydrates, including the carbohydrate quality index (CQI), which includes a variety of components. Low-carbohydrate diet score (LCDS) has been proposed as a new method of scoring micronutrient intake that could provide a reasonable explanation for the link between diet and the risk of chronic diseases. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the relationship between CQI, LCDS, glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL), insulin load (IL), and insulin index (II) with bone mass density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. METHOD In this case-control study, 131 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis/osteopenia and 131 healthy postmenopausal women aged 45-65 participated. The dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) method measured the BMD of the lumbar vertebrae and femoral neck. A validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intake. Logistic regression were used to evaluate the relation between GI, GL, II, IL, CQI, and LCDS with BMD. RESULTS Diets with higher GI increased the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis, but LCDS and CQI decreased the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that a higher intake of fruits and vegetables and receiving various dietary vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant compounds may be a useful way to prevent osteopenia in Iranian women.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies on the association between the low carbohydrate diet (LCD) score and CVD risk factors have limited and inconsistent results. Data are from the baseline survey of Community-based Cohort Study on Nervous System Diseases. A total of 4609 adults aged ≥ 18 years were included in the study. Dietary data were assessed using a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to estimate relationships of three LCD scores with low HDL-cholesterol, high LDL-cholesterol, hypercholesterolaemia, hypertriacylglycerolaemia, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), high blood pressure and hyperuricaemia after adjusting for potential confounders. A higher LCD score was negatively associated with low HDL-cholesterol (OR: 0·65 (95 % CI 0·50, 0·83), P = 0·0001) and IFG (OR: 0·65 (95 % CI 0·51, 0·81), P = 0·001) after the final adjustment. However, there are sex differences in this result. Males in the highest quintile of the animal-based or plant-based LCD scores showed a decreased risk of low HDL-cholesterol, and females in the highest quintile of the animal-based or plant-based LCD scores showed a decreased risk of IFG than those in the lowest quintile of the LCD scores. These results suggest that sex differences should be considered when using LCD to treat dyslipidaemia and reduce fasting blood glucose.

Abstract
PURPOSE Carbohydrate intake and insulinemic potential of diet are suggested to be correlated with the development of different chronic diseases. Considering the limited research on obesity, this study aimed to investigate the association of dietary insulin index (DII), dietary insulin load (DIL), and low-carbohydrate diet score (LCDS) with body weight and obesity in healthy adults. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, DII, DIL, and LCDS were calculated using relevant formulas based on dietary intakes obtained by a valid 168-item food frequency questionnaire, in 393 otherwise healthy adults of either normal-weight, overweight, or obese. RESULTS Individuals in the highest tertile of DIL and DII had respectively 73% (OR: 0.27, 95% CI 0.08-0.94, p = 0.049) and 50% (OR: 0.5, 95% CI 0.26-0.96, p = 0.038) lower odds of being overweight compared to the lowest tertile, after adjusting the effects of age, sex, and dietary energy intake. Participants in the highest tertile of DIL had 92% greater odds of being obese compared to the lowest tertile, but this association did not remain significant after adjusting the effect of energy intake. Individuals in the highest tertile of LCDS had about 2 times odds of being overweight compared with those in the lowest tertile (OR: 2.04, 95% CI 1.04-4.01, p = 0.049). There was no relationship between being obese and tertiles of LCDS. CONCLUSION Higher dietary carbohydrate intake and insulinemic potential of diet could not be considered independent dietary risk factors for overweight or obesity. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III: evidence obtained from an observational study.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with numerous co-morbidities and diet, is one of the modifiable risk factors for prevention against these obesity-related metabolic disorders. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate the association between adherence to low carbohydrate diet (LCD) score and serum lipids, glycemic markers, blood pressure, and anthropometric parameters among obese individuals. The current cross-sectional study is a combination of two projects with total participants of 359 obese individuals (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 30 kg/m2 ) aged 20-50 years were included. Dietary intake was assessed by a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) of 132 food items. Low carbohydrate diet score was estimated by deciles of dietary intakes. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was defined based on the guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III). Enzymatic methods were used to assess serum lipids, glucose, and insulin concentrations. Blood pressure was measured by sphygmomanometer and body composition with bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Higher adherence to LCD score was associated with significantly lower DBP and triglyceride (TG) concentrations and increased high density lipoprotein (HDL)-C levels after adjustment for the confounders (p < 0.05). A non-significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and total cholesterol (TC) values were also observed. Also, high adherence to LCD score was associated with reduced prevalence of metabolic syndrome (p < 0.05). Higher BMI, fat mass, and lower fat-free mass were also accompanied with higher adherence to LCD score. According to our study, low carbohydrate diet score was associated with more favorable cardio-metabolic risk factors independent of some confounders like age, BMI, sex, and physical activity level. Further studies in different communities will help for generalization of our findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Accurate estimation of the glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) of diets is essential when assessing health implications of dietary GI and GL. The present study aimed to estimate dietary GI and GL utilizing the updated GI tables with a large number of new, reliable GI values and assess their associations with metabolic syndrome among Korean adults. METHODS AND RESULTS We analyzed data from 3317 men and 6191 women for this cross-sectional study. Dietary intake was assessed with a validated food frequency questionnaire. Metabolic syndrome and its components were defined based on the harmonized criteria with Korean-specific cutoffs for waist circumference. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Compared with women in the lowest quintiles of energy-adjusted dietary GI and GL, women in the highest quintiles had significantly greater risks of metabolic syndrome (GI, OR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.18-2.06; GL, OR = 1.80, 95% CI = 1.27-2.57), elevated blood pressure, reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C, both GI and GL), elevated triglycerides (GI only), elevated waist circumference, and elevated fasting glucose (GL only). Among men, no significant association was noted except for a higher risk of reduced HDL-C (OR = 1.59, 95% CI = 1.01-2.29) in the highest quintile of energy-adjusted dietary GI than in the lowest quintile. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that dietary GI and GL are positively associated with metabolic syndrome risk among women, but not men, in Korea.

Abstract
The rising prevalence of depression among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients has triggered an alarming situation, and further actions need to be taken by health care professionals and policymakers to curb the issue. There is a lack of evidence review in terms of the biopsychosocial and nutritional factors that are related to depression among T2DM. Hence, this review aimed to identify available evidence on the biopsychosocial and nutritional factors associated with depression among T2DM patients based on the existing literature. Articles were systematically searched from four databases, namely PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCOHost. The approach for the identification of the final articles followed PRISMA guidelines. The selected full-text articles were published between 2017 and 2021 in the English language, and included studies focused on depression among T2DM patients. Using AXIS tools, the eligible articles were evaluated to assess the quality of studies. A total of 19 studies were included in the review, and information related to research questions and associated factors was extracted. Biological, psychological, social, and nutritional factors were shown to be linked with depression among T2DM patients. Future studies need to considered using the biopsychosocial model and incorporating nutritional factors to manage the issues of depression among T2DM patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Assessing the relationship between low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) score and metabolic syndrome (Mets) in Iranian adults. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Yazd Health Study and Taghzieh Mardom-e-Yazd study. PARTICIPANTS Data of 2074 participants were used. Dietary intakes were assessed by a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. LCD score was calculated for each person by summing up the assigned scores to deciles of energy percentages from macronutrients. Mets was evaluated using National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III. Eventually, association between LCD score and Mets was examined using logistic regression. RESULTS Total Mets prevalence was approximately 40·5 %. After adjustment for confounders, subjects in the higher quartile of LCD score had a significant lower chance of Mets than lower quartile among all participants (Q4 v. Q1: OR: 0·68, 95 % CI (0·50, 0·92)) and separately in men (Q4 v. Q1: OR: 0·54, 95 % CI (0·34, 0·86)) and women (Q2 v. Q1: OR: 0·53, 95 % CI (0·34, 0·82)). Furthermore, more LCD adherence in men reduced abdominal obesity by 47 % (Q3 v. Q1: OR: 0·53, 95 % CI (0·28, 0·99)). A significant inverse relation was also observed between low HDL cholesterol and LCD score in all participants (Q4 versus Q1 OR: 0·74, 95% CI: 0·56-0·99) and separately in men (Q4 versus Q1 OR: 0·63, 95% CI: 0·40-0·98). CONCLUSIONS More adherence to LCD might be related to lower chance of Mets and some of its components such as low HDL-cholesterol and abdominal obesity specially in men. Further studies are required to confirm the findings.

Abstract
Low-carbohydrate diets (LCD) have been considered a popular dietary strategy for weight loss. However, the association of the low-carbohydrate dietary pattern with postpartum weight retention (PPWR) in women remains unknown. The present study involved 426 women from a prospective mother-infant cohort study. Overall, animal or plant LCD scores, which represent adherence to different low-carbohydrate dietary patterns, were calculated using diet intake information assessed by three consecutive 24 h dietary surveys. PPWR was assessed by the difference of weight at 1 year postpartum minus the pre-pregnancy weight. After adjusting for potential confounding variables, women in higher quartiles of total and animal-based LCD scores had a significantly lower body weight and weight retention at 1 year postpartum (P < 0.05). The multivariable-adjusted ORs of substantial PPWR (≥5 kg), comparing the highest with the lowest quartile, were 0.47 (95% confidence interval 0.23-0.96) for the total LCD score (P = 0.021 for trend) and 0.38 (95% confidence interval 0.19-0.77) for the animal-based LCD score (P = 0.019 for trend), while this association was significantly attenuated by rice, glycemic load, fish, poultry, animal fat and animal protein (P for trend <0.05). A high score for plant-based LCD was not significantly associated with the risk of PPWR (P > 0.05). The findings suggested that a low-carbohydrate dietary pattern, particularly with high protein and fat intake from animal-source foods, is associated with a decreased risk of weight retention at 1 year postpartum. This association was mainly due to low intake of glycemic load and high intake of fish and poultry.

Abstract
The associations of lifestyle and environment with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular disease have recently resulted in increased attention in research. This study aimed to examine interactive associations among carbohydrate and fat intake, physical environment (i.e., elevation and humidity), lifestyle, and MetS among Ecuadorian adults. We used data from the Ecuador National Health and Nutrition Survey 2012 (ENSANUT-ECU), with a total of 6023 participants aged 20 to 60 years included in this study. Logistic regression was used to determine the association of status of carbohydrate and fat intake, low-carbohydrate high-fat diet (LCHF) and medium-carbohydrate and fat (MCF) diet with MetS, where the high-carbohydrate low-fat (HCLF) diet was used as a reference. Women with LCHF and MCF diets showed lower prevalence of increased blood pressure (OR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.19–0.59; OR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.32–0.79, respectively). Women with MCF diet also showed lower prevalence of elevated fasting glucose (OR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.37–0.91). Moreover, there were negative associations between MetS and reduced HDL cholesterol in women with MCF diet residing in low relative humidity (OR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.45–0.98) and in women with LCHF diet residing at a high elevation (OR = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.16–0.86). Additionally, higher prevalence of increased waist circumference was observed in men with both MFC and LCHF diets who were physically inactive (OR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.12–3.20; OR = 2.34, 95% CI: 1.19–4.60, respectively) and residing in high relative humidity (OR = 1.90, 95% CI: 1.08–2.89; OR = 2.63, 95% CI: 1.32–5.28, respectively). Our findings suggest that LCHF intake is associated with lower blood pressure, while MCF intake is associated with lower blood pressure and fasting glucose in Ecuadorian women. Furthermore, the associations of carbohydrate and fat intake with prevalence of MetS can be modified by physical activity, relative humidity, and elevation. The obtained outcomes may provide useful information for health programs focusing on dietary intake and lifestyle according to physical environment of the population to promote health and prevent metabolic diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Although high-fat diet (HFD) could impact the composition of fecal microbiome and their metabolites, it is still largely unknown which fecal bacteria and metabolites are relatively important in responding to the HFD. This study aimed to identify the crucial fecal bacteria and metabolites in the HFD mice using a microbial-metabolite network, and to investigate the synergistic mediation effect of the crucial fecal bacteria and metabolites on serum dyslipidemia induced by the HFD. METHODS The 16srDNA sequencing and the ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC/TOF MSMS) platform were performed to characterize the composition and function of fecal microbiome, and metabolites in the HFD. The microbial-metabolite network, correlation and mediation analyses were performed to examine the relationships among fecal microbiome, metabolites, and serum dyslipidemia indicators. Mice models were conducted to evaluate the effect of fecal metabolite on dyslipidemia. RESULTS Compared to the control, 32 genera were altered in the HFD, including 26 up-regulated and 6 down-regulated. A total of 42 altered pathways were observed between the control and HFD, and the "Glycosphingolipid biosynthesis" was identified as the most significant pathway (fold change = 0.64; p < 0.001). Meanwhile, 49 fecal metabolites were altered in the HFD, and the fecal microbiome was associated with the fecal metabolism (M2 = 0.776, p = 0.008). Based on the microbial-metabolite network, two major hub genera were screened (HUB1: g. Streptococcus, HUB2: g. Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes_group), and one bacterial metabolite, sphingosine, was found in this study. Further, the HUB2 was positively associated with fecal sphingosine (r = 0.646, p = 0.001), and its downstream metabolic pathway, "Glycosphingolipid biosynthesis" pathway (r = 0.544, p = 0.009). The regulatory relationship between the HUB2 and sphingosine synergistically mediated the effect of HFD on TCHO (33.7%), HDL-C (37.3%), and bodyweight (36.7%). Besides, compared to the HFD, the HFD with sphingosine supplementation had lower bodyweight (35.12 ± 1.23 vs. 39.42 ± 1.25, p < 0.001), TG (0.44 ± 0.08 vs. 0.52 ± 0.05, p = 0.002), TCHO (3.81 ± 0.34 vs. 4.51 ± 0.38, p = 0.002), and LDL-c (0.82 ± 0.09 vs. 0.97 ± 0.15, p = 0.016). CONCLUSIONS The g. Streptococcus and g. Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes are two hub genera in the fecal micro-ecosystem of the HFD, and the g. Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes mediates the effect of HFD on dyslipidemia through sphingosine. Sphingosine supplementation can improve dyslipidemia induced by HFD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since evidence regarding to low carbohydrate diet (LCD) and psychiatric disorders is little and controversial, this study aimed to assess relation between LCD score and psychological disorders including depression, anxiety, and stress among a large representative sample of Iranian adult population in Yazd city, Iran. METHODS This cross-sectional analysis was conducted on data of 7165 persons who participated in the recruitment phase of Yazd Health Study (YaHS) and Taghzieh Mardom-e-Yazd (TAMIZ) study. Dietary intakes were evaluated by a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. LCD score was calculated for each person according to summing up assigned scores to deciles of percentages of energy from macronutrients. Assessment of psychological disorders was also conducted by the validated Iranian version of depression, anxiety and stress scale questionnaire (DASS 21). Eventually, association between adherence to LCD and psychological disorders was evaluated via logistic regression. RESULTS After adjusting the confounders, women in the third quartile of LCD score might had 38% lower chance of depression versus those in the first quartile (odds ratio (OR) = 0.62, confidence interval (CI) = 0.42-0.93). However, no significant relationship was observed for other psychological disorders. CONCLUSIONS More adherences to LCD might be associated with lower chance of depression only among women. Further studies special prospective studies are required to validate these results.

Abstract
Background Because a moderate-carbohydrate diet reportedly has minimal risks, the substitution of carbohydrate for protein has been emphasized. Few studies have explored the effect of moderate-carbohydrate diets with higher protein intake in Asians, who typically consume a high-carbohydrate low-fat diet. Therefore, this study evaluated the associations of moderate- versus high- carbohydrate diets with cardiovascular risk factors among Korean adults by protein source. Methods This study included 7965 adults (3196 men, 4769 women) aged ≥ 19 years who participated in the 2013–2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Dietary intake was assessed by a 24-h recall method and four types of diet were defined: a moderate-carbohydrate diet with plant protein (MCP) or animal protein (MCA) and a high-carbohydrate diet with plant protein (HCP) or animal protein (HCA). Results Compared with the MCP group, men in the other three groups had significantly higher odds ratios (ORs) for elevated total cholesterol, reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, and metabolic syndrome. Among women, only the HCP group had an increased OR for reduced HDL-cholesterol, compared with the MCP group. Similar associations were observed in younger adults (19–49 years). In addition, younger adults in the MCA group exhibited higher ORs for elevated triglycerides in men and elevated total cholesterol in women, compared with those in the MCP group. Conclusions A moderate-carbohydrate diet with a high intake of plant protein was inversely associated with cardiovascular risk factors, especially among younger Korean adults. Further intervention studies are required to confirm this relationship and develop the optimal diet for cardiovascular health in the Korean population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Studies indicated that the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in association to greater adherence to low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) differs in various populations. In this study, we aimed to assess the association of LCD score with the risk of CVD events in a prospective population-based study. METHODS AND RESULTS CVD-free participants (n = 2188) were recruited from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2006-2008) and followed for a mean of 6.7 years. Using a valid and reliable 168 item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, the LCD score was determined based on the percentage of energy as carbohydrate, protein, and fat, which ranged from 0 to 12. Cox proportional hazard regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of CVD across tertiles of LCD score in women and men. Mean ± SD age of participants (44.8% male) was 38.8 ± 13.0 years, and median (25-75, interquartile range) of the LCD score was 6 (4-8) at baseline. During follow-up, 77 (3.5%) new cases of CVD were identified. After adjustment for sex, age, body mass index, physical activity, smoking, energy intake, diabetes, and hypertension, there was no association between the LCD score and risk of CVD outcomes in all participants (HR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.86-1.02) and women (HR = 1.13; 95% CI: 0.94-1.36); however, the LCD score was associated with an 11% reduced incidence of CVD events in men (HR = 0.89; 95% CI: 0.80-0.98), (P for trend: 0.028). CONCLUSION Findings showed that higher adherence to LCD may be associated with a lower risk of CVD outcomes in men but not in women.

Abstract
PURPOSE Both weight loss and low-carbohydrate diets (LCD) without weight loss prolong survival in prostate cancer models. Few human trials have tested weight loss or LCD on prostate cancer. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN We conducted a multi-site randomized 6-month trial of LCD versus control on PSA doubling time (PSADT) in patients with prostate cancer with biochemical recurrence (BCR) after local treatment. Eligibility included body mass index (BMI) ≥ 24 kg/m2 and PSADT 3 to 36 months. The LCD arm was instructed to eat [Formula: see text]20 g/carbs/day; the control arm instructed to avoid dietary changes. Primary outcome was PSADT. Secondary outcomes included weight, lipids, glucose metabolism, and diet. RESULTS Of 60 planned patients, the study stopped early after an interim analysis showed futility. Twenty-seven LCD and 18 control patients completed the study. At 6 months, although both arms consumed similar protein and fats, the LCD arm reduced carbohydrates intake (-117 vs. 8 g, P < 0.001) and lost weight (-12.1 vs. -0.50 kg, P < 0.001). The LCD arm reduced HDL, triglycerides, and HbA1c with no difference in total cholesterol or glucose. Mean PSADT was similar between LCD (21 months) and control (15 months, P = 0.316) arms. In a post hoc exploratory analysis accounting for prestudy PSADT, baseline PSA, primary treatment, and hemoconcentration, PSADT was significantly longer in LCD versus control (28 vs. 13 months, P = 0.021) arms. Adverse events were few, usually mild, and returned to baseline by 6 months. CONCLUSIONS Among BCR patients, LCD induced weight loss and metabolic benefits with acceptable safety without affecting PSADT, suggesting LCD does not adversely affect prostate cancer growth and is safe. Given exploratory findings of longer PSADT, larger studies testing LCD on disease progression are warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have separately reported the contributions of dietary factors to the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its markers, including blood pressure (BP) and lipid profile. This study systematically reviewed the current evidence on this issue in the Korean population. METHODS Sixty-two studies from PubMed and Embase were included in this meta-analysis. We performed a random-effects model to analyze pooled odds ratios (ORs) and hazard ratios (HRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the consumption of 14 food items, three macro- and eight micro-nutrients, two dietary patterns, and three dietary indices. RESULTS An analysis of pooled effect sizes from at least four individual study populations showed significant associations between coffee consumption and CVD (OR/HR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.52-0.97) and elevated/high triglycerides (TG) (OR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.78-0.90), sugar-sweetened beverage intake and elevated BP (OR/HR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.09-1.33), and milk and dairy intake and elevated/high TG and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (OR/HR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.76-0.89 for both). Carbohydrate consumption and the low-carbohydrate-diet score were consistently related to an approximately 25% risk reduction for elevated TG and low HDL-C. A lower risk of elevated total cholesterol, but not low-density lipoprotein, was additionally observed for those with a higher low-carbohydrate-diet score. A healthy dietary pattern was only associated with a reduced risk of elevated TG in the Korea National Cancer Screenee Cohort (OR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.67-0.98). CONCLUSION This study showed that milk and dairy and coffee had protective effects for CVD and its risk factors, such as BP and lipid profile, while sugar-sweetened beverages exerted harmful effects.

Abstract
PURPOSE The association of glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) is controversial. Therefore, we conducted this first systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of observational studies to quantify these associations. METHODS We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for relevant studies up to 1 April 2019. Summary odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated by a random-effects model. This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42019131788). RESULTS We included eight high-quality (n = 5) or medium-quality (n = 3) cross-sectional studies in the final meta-analysis, comprising 6058 MetS events and 28,998 participants. The summary ORs of MetS for the highest versus lowest categories were 1.23 (95% CI 1.10-1.38, I2 = 0, tau2 = 0, n = 5) for dietary GI, 1.06 (95% CI 0.89-1.25, I2 = 36.2%, tau2 = 0.0151, n = 6) for dietary GL. The summary OR was 1.12 (95% CI 1.00-1.26, I2 = 0, tau2 = 0, n = 3) per 5 GI units, 0.96 (95% CI 0.83-1.10, I2 = 33.4%, tau2 = 0.0059, n = 2) per 20 GL units. CONCLUSIONS Dietary GI was positively associated with the prevalence of MetS. However, no significant association was found between dietary GL and the prevalence of MetS. Further studies with prospective design are needed to establish potential causal relationship between dietary GI and the MetS.
