Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dietary inflammatory index (DII) is utilized to determine the inflammatory effects of nutrients and foods on various diseases. Inflammation is a potential risk factor for anemia. We hypothesize that pro-inflammatory diets boost the incidence of anemia, as indicated by high DII. METHODS 41, 360 Americans were included in this study from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) from 2003-2018. Multivariable logistic regression models were employed to examine the association between DII and anemia. RESULTS After adjustment for all the covariates, the odds ratios (ORs) (95% CI) between the risk of anemia and DII across tertile 3 were 1.2556 (95% CI 1.0621, 1.4843; P = 0.0077), and the trend test was statistically significant (P for trend = 0.009). Furthermore, in the subgroup analysis stratified by gender. The ORs (95% CI) between the risk of anemia and DII across tertile 2 and 3 were 1.8071 (95% CI 1.1754, 2.7783; P = 0.0070) and 2.1591 (95% CI 1.4009, 3.3278; P = 0.0005) in men after multivariable adjustment. However, in women, this association was only significantly different (P < 0.05) across tertile 3 in the crude model. In the subgroup analysis stratified by race, this association was significant (P < 0.05) between the risk of anemia and DII for Non-Hispanic Whites/Blacks after adjustment. DISCUSSION Together, anemia was significantly associated with DII using logistic regression. In stratified analyses, higher DII scores were linked to an increased incidence of anemia in men, while no association was found in women after adjustment. Additionally, anemia may be associated with greater pro-inflammatory diets in Non-Hispanic Whites/Blacks. CONCLUSION In the present study, we evaluate the potential relationship between DII and anemia using data from NHANES. This cross-sectional study confirmed the hypothesis that the higher DII was significantly associated with a higher risk of anemia in the U.S. population.

Abstract
The incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is growing in Western countries. Nutritional interventions that promote high-quality dietary patterns could help reverse this trend. We aimed to evaluate whether changes in Nutrient-Rich Food Index 9.3 (NRF9.3) were related to the risk of developing T2DM in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). The study was carried out in the context of two healthy dietary interventions (a Mediterranean and a low-fat diet). For this purpose, we evaluated all the patients in the CORDIOPREV study without T2DM at baseline. Data were obtained during the first 5 years of dietary intervention. The score was calculated using the Food Frequency Questionnaires at baseline and after 1 year of intervention. After 5 years of follow-up, 106 patients developed T2DM (incident-T2DM), while 316 subjects did not (non-T2DM). Total NRF9.3 score and changes during the first year of intervention were compared between incident-T2DM and non-T2DM. Incident-T2DM showed less improvement in NRF9.3 than non-T2DM (p = 0.010). In the multi-adjusted Cox proportional hazard study, patients with greater improvement in NRF9.3 had over 50% less risk of developing T2DM compared with the lowest tertile (HR 2.10, 95%, CI = 1.12-3.56). In conclusion, improved diet quality in terms of nutrient density after the dietary intervention was associated with a lower risk of T2DM in patients with CHD.

Abstract
Modern lifestyles deviated considerably from the ancestral routines towards major shifts in diets and increased sedentarism. The trace elements status of the human body is no longer adequately supported by micronutrient-inferior farmed meats and crop commodities produced by the existing agricultural food systems. This is particular evident in the increased obesogenic adipogenesis and low-grade inflammation that fails to resolve with time. The metabolically restrictive environment of the inflamed tissues drives activation and proliferation of transient and resident populations of immune cells in favor of pro-inflammatory phenotypes, as well as a part of the enhanced autoimmune response. As different stages of the immune activation and resolution depend on the availability of specific minerals to maintain the structural integrity of skin and mucus membranes, activation and migration of immune cells, activation of the complement system, and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, this review discusses recent advances in our understanding of the contribution of select minerals in optimizing the responses of innate and adaptive immune outcomes. An abbreviated view on the absorption, transport, and delivery of minerals to the body tissues as related to metabolic adaptation is considered.

Retail Cost and Energy Adjusted Cost Are Associated with Dietary Diversity and Nutrient Adequacy for Diets of 6–24 Months Children. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14163376. Abstract
Poor nutrition during the first two years of life has long term consequences, but resource-poor households often do not have the means to access nutrient-dense and diverse diets. Pooled data of 24-h dietary recalls (n = 3336) and 2019 retail food prices were analyzed to determine associations of retail cost and energy cost (per 100 kcal) with diet quality indicators for diets of 6–24-month-old South African children who were breastfed (BF-diet) and not breastfed (NBF-diet) during the 24-h recall period. Compared to the BF-diet, retail cost for the NBF-diet was three times higher for age 6–11 months, and double for age 12–17 months. Higher retail cost and energy cost were both associated with higher mean adequacy ratios and dietary diversity scores for BF and NBF diets, except energy cost for the NBF-diet for age 6–11 months. Overall, inclusion of flesh foods, vitamin A-rich fruits and vegetables, and other fruit and vegetables increased from the lowest to the highest retail cost tertile. The higher cost of more nutritious diets highlights the importance of the affordability of diets in interventions aimed at improving diet quality. Possible strategies include: identifying the most-affordable foods within each food group, focusing on foods that provide multiple key micronutrients, and the inclusion of locally available indigenous foods.
