Abstract
The clinical data analysis found that, compared with the traditional obesity index, the waist-weight ratio (WWR) has more advantages in predicting abnormal bone mineral density in subjects with type 2 diabetes. WWR may serve as a new predictive indicator for osteoporosis in T2DM patients. PURPOSE This study was designed to explore the correlation between obesity-related indices and bone mineral density (BMD) and its influencing factors in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. METHODS A total of 528 patients with type 2 diabetes were recruited. Glucose tolerance, insulin stimulation, and blood biochemical tests were conducted on all participants. All subjects underwent dual-energy X-ray bone density testing and were grouped based on the bone density results. RESULTS Compared with those in the normal BMD group, the waist-to-body weight ratio (WWR) and weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) in the osteopenia and osteoporosis groups were significantly greater, while body mass index (BMI) was significantly lower (P < 0.05). The logistic regression results showed that the WWR, WWI, and BMI were independently correlated with abnormal BMD in T2DM patients (P < 0.05). WWR and the WWI were negatively correlated with the T-value of bone density in various parts of the body, while BMI was positively correlated with the T-value of bone density (P < 0.05). The area under the working characteristic curve (AUC) for T2DM patients with abnormal bone mass predicted by the WWR [0.806, 95% CI = (0.770-0.843), P < 0.001] was greater than that for patients with other obesity indicators, such as the WWI and BMI. CONCLUSION We found a positive correlation between the WWR and bone density in T2DM patients. Compared with other obesity indicators, such as BMI and WWI, the WWR has a stronger discriminative ability for T2DM patients with abnormal bone density. Therefore, more attention should be given to the WWR in T2DM patients.

Abstract
Environmental pollutant is considered to be one of the important factors affecting adolescent growth. However, the effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exposure on adolescent growth have not been assessed. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 was used to examine the associations between VOCs exposure and adolescent growth indicators through three statistical models. The mediating effect of bone mineral density (BMD) on these associations was examined. The potential pathways and key targets were identified by the network pharmacology analysis methods. This study included 746 adolescents. Three statistical methods consistently showed a negative correlation between VOCs exposure and adolescent growth indicators. Furthermore, BMD mediated the relationship between VOCs exposure and adolescent growth indicators, with mediated proportion ranging from 4.3 % to 53.4 %. Network pharmacology analysis found a significant enrichment in IL-17 signaling pathway. Moreover, the adverse effects of VOCs exposure on adolescent growth were observed to significantly attenuate in adolescents with high serum vitamin D levels. Our results suggested that VOCs exposure was an adverse factor affecting adolescent growth, with BMD playing a significant regulatory role, and IL-17 signaling pathway was the underlying mechanism. Vitamin D supplementation may be a viable strategy to prevent VOCs exposure from affecting adolescent growth.

Abstract
Introduction Vitamin D's precise role in bone mineral density regulation remains elusive. Nevertheless, its deficiency is linked to increased bone turnover through the upregulation of RANK ligands by osteoblasts. This study aimed to (i) evaluate vitamin D status in young adults and (ii) assess the association between vitamin D deficiency and bone turnover markers receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL), RANK, and the osteoprotegerin (OPG) in determining bone mineral density. Materials and Methods This cross-sectional study involved 474 participants from the East Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya. Vitamin D levels were measured using the UniCel DxI 800 system, while OPG, RANK, and RANKL were assessed through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Additionally, a whole-body dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan determined bone mineral density. Vitamin D deficiency was categorised as <20 ng/ml, insufficiency as 20-29 ng/ml, and sufficiency as ≥30 ng/ml. Results Findings indicated 54.6% vitamin D deficiency and 35.4% insufficiency in young adults. Osteoporosis affected 26%, and 67% exhibited osteopenia. A weak positive correlation was found between vitamin 25(OH) D and bone mineral density T score (r = 0.16, r2 = 0.02, P = 0.44). Additionally, moderately weak correlations were observed between serum vitamin D and OPG (r = -0.42, r2 = 0.18, P < 0.001) and between vitamin D and RANKL (r = -0.13, r2 = 0.01, P = 0.18). Conclusion The study suggests that vitamin D deficiency diminishes bone mineral density by promoting RANKL-RANK osteoclastogenesis and upregulating OPG expression. As young adults form a significant workforce, creating awareness is crucial for maintaining optimal health.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nonambulatory pediatric patients may have low bone mineral density (BMD) and increased risk of pathologic fractures. Though bisphosphonate therapy is the mainstream medical intervention in these children, clinical data regarding this treatment are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of bisphosphonate therapy in such children. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study of 21 nonambulatory children (Gross Motor Function Classification System level V) with BMD z-score ≤ -2.0 who were treated with intravenous pamidronate for at least 1 year. These patients received pamidronate every 4 months at a dose of 1.0 to 3.0 mg/kg for each cycle and had regular follow-ups for at least 1 year. The main outcome measures were changes in BMD, risk rate of fracture, biochemical data, and adverse events. RESULTS The average duration of pamidronate treatment was 2.0±0.9 years, and the mean cumulative dose of pamidronate according to body weight was 7.7±2.5 mg/kg/yr. After treatment, the mean lumbar spine bone mineral content, BMD, and height-for-age-z-score-adjusted BMD z-score (BMDhazZ) significantly improved. The relative risk of fracture after treatment was 0.21 (p=0.0032), suggesting that pamidronate treatment reduced fracture incidence significantly. The increase in the average dose per body weight in each cycle significantly increased the changes in BMDhazZ. CONCLUSION Pamidronate treatment improved the bone health of nonambulatory children with low bone density without any significant adverse events. Independent of cumulative dosage and duration of treatment, the effectiveness of pamidronate increased significantly with an increase in the average dose per body weight in subsequent cycles.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The aim of this review is to discuss the most recent published scientific evidence regarding bone health in the pediatric athlete. RECENT FINDINGS Pediatric athletes commonly suffer from overuse injuries to the physes and apophyses, as well as bone stress injuries, for which magnetic resonance imaging grading of the severity of injuries may be useful in guiding return to sport. Adolescent athletes, particularly those who train indoors and during the winter season, are at risk for vitamin D deficiency, which has important implications for bone mineral density. However, the relationship between vitamin D status and traumatic fracture risk is still unclear. While the female athlete triad is a well-established condition, the current work has led to the recognition of parallel pathophysiology in male athletes, referred to as the male athlete triad. Recent evidence suggests that transdermal 17β-estradiol treatment in amenorrhoeic female athletes is an effective adjunctive treatment to improve bone mineral density in treatment of the female athlete triad. Young athletes are at risk for musculoskeletal injuries unique to the growing skeleton. Optimizing nutritional intake, particularly related to adequate vitamin D intake and prevention of the athlete triad, is critical to optimize bone health in the young athlete.

Abstract
Objective Research is limited regarding biochemical markers of bone metabolism among children with cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA). We aimed to determine differences in vitamin D and bone metabolism markers between infants with CMPA and healthy infants and explore relationships between these in a cross-sectional study. Methods In total, we included 41 children diagnosed with CMPA and under systematic medical and nutritional care at our center, and 50 healthy children as a control group. We reviewed demographic and clinical characteristics and measured serum biomarkers. Results We found that serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels among infants in the CMPA group were significantly lower than those in the control group, and levels of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), serum phosphorus, and serum calcitonin were reduced. Pearson correlation analysis showed that serum 25(OH)D concentrations in the CMPA group were negatively correlated with parathyroid hormone but not significantly correlated with calcitonin and BALP. Logistic regression showed that CMPA was a risk factor for vitamin D deficiency. Conclusions Our study indicated that CMPA was associated with disturbances in bone metabolism. Levels of vitamin D in children with CMPA were lower than those in healthy children. CMPA was a risk factor for vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescence is a critical period for bone development, and peak bone mass may be reached in late adolescence. Boosting bone accumulation at this time can help preserve adult bone health and avoid osteoporosis later in life. Body mass index (BMI) has been found to have a favorable impact on bone mineral density (BMD) in previous research. However, excessive obesity is harmful to health and may lead to various systemic diseases. Therefore, finding an appropriate BMI to maintain a balance between obesity and BMD is critical for adolescents. METHODS The datasets from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2020 were used in a cross-sectional investigation. Multivariate linear regression models were used to examine the linear connection between BMI and BMD. Fitted smoothing curves and threshold effect analysis were used to describe the nonlinear relationship. Subgroup analyses were then conducted based on gender and age. RESULTS This population-based study included a total of 6,143 adolescents aged 8-19 years. In a multivariate linear regression analysis, a good association between BMI and total BMD was shown [0.014 (0.013, 0.014)]. This positive association was maintained in all subgroup analyses grouped by sex and age. Furthermore, the association between BMI and BMD was nonlinear with a saturation point present, as evidenced by smoothed curve fitting. According to the threshold effect study, with an age group of two years, adolescents of different ages had different BMI saturation values with respect to BMD. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed a significant positive and saturated association between BMI and BMD in adolescents aged 8-19 years. Maintaining BMI at saturation values may reduce other adverse effects while achieving optimal BMD.

Abstract
Dietary lipids are an indispensable source of energy and nutrition in human life. Numerous studies have shown that dietary bioactive lipids have many health benefits, including prevention or treatment of chronic diseases. The different chemical compositions and structural characteristics of bioactive lipids not only affect their digestion, absorption, and metabolism but also affect their health properties. In this review, the major dietary bioactive lipids (fatty acids, carotenoids, phytosterols, phenolic lipids, fat-soluble vitamins, and sphingomyelins) in foods are systematically summarized, from the aspects of composition, digestion, absorption, metabolism, source, structural characteristics, and their health properties. In particular, the relationship between the compositional and structural changes of bioactive lipids and their absorption and metabolism is discussed as well as their effect on health properties. This review provides a comprehensive summary toward health properties of dietary bioactive lipids.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the association between low bone mineral density (BMD) and severe periodontitis at the end of the second decade of life. MATERIALS AND METHODS This population-based study analysed 2032 youngers (18-19 years old) of the RPS cohort. BMD of lumbar spine (BMD-LS) and of the whole body (BMD-WB) were assessed by dual x-ray emission densitometry. Low BMD-LS (Z-score ≤ -2) and low BMD-WB (Z-score ≤ -1.5) were correlated with severe periodontitis. The extent of periodontal disease was also evaluated as the following outcomes: proportions of teeth affected by clinical attachment loss ≥5 mm and probing depth ≥5 mm. Multivariate models by sex, education, family income, risk of alcohol dependence, smoking, plaque, bleeding index, and body mass index were estimated through logistic regression (binary outcomes) and Poisson regression (continuous outcomes). RESULTS The prevalence of severe periodontitis was 10.97%. Low BMD-LS (odds ratio [OR] = 2.08, confidence interval [CI] = 1.12-3.85, p = .01) and low BMD-WB (OR = 1.34, CI = 1.001-1.81, p = .04) were associated with severe periodontitis in the final multivariate models. Low BMD-LS and BMD-WB were also associated with a greater extent of periodontitis (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS Low BMD was found to be associated with the severity and extent of periodontitis in adolescents. Adolescents at peak bone mass age presenting low BMD are more likely to be affected by severe periodontitis.
