Differential photoacoustic spectroscopy for flow gas detection based on single microphone

Differential photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) for flow gas detection based on single microphone is innovatively proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Unlike the traditional systems, only one microphone is used to suppress flowing gas noise. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy and second harmonic detection technique are applied in this PAS system with Q-point demodulation for acetylene (C2H2) gas detection. The experiment is conducted at 1 atm and 300 K. Different concentrations and flow rates of C2H2 from 0 sccm to 225 sccm are detected by using nitrogen (N2) as the carrier gas, which indicates that the system can respond well to flowing gases while maintaining the noise at the same level. The system response time decreases to 3.58 s while the gas velocity is 225 sccm. The detection limit of 43.97 ppb with 1 s integration time and normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient of 4.0 × 10-9 cm-1 W Hz-1/2 is achieved at the flow rate of 225 sccm. The firstly proposed differential PAS based on single microphone greatly simplifies the system structure for flow gas detection, which provides a novel route for development of PAS with significant practical implementation prospects.

Ultrahigh-speed phase demodulation of a Fabry-Perot sensor based on fiber array parallel spectral detection

An ultrahigh-speed phase demodulation system was designed for the Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometric sensor based on fiber array parallel spectral detection. A high-power amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source served as the broadband detection light. The spectrum generated by the dispersion of the F-P interference light through an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) was incident into the fiber array and was detected in parallel by 48 photodiodes. The 48-channel signals were acquired synchronously and processed in real time to achieve a phase demodulation for the F-P cavity at 200 kHz. As a result, a low-resolution spectral detection and demodulation system was constructed with high speed. The length demodulation range of the F-P cavity was 60-700 µm, and the demodulation resolution was as high as 0.22 nm. The designed high-sensitivity demodulator is expected to be used for ultrasonic and high-frequency vibration detection.

Non-dispersive sensing scheme based on mid-infrared LED and differential mode excitation photoacoustic spectroscopy

A robust and simple sensing scheme utilizing a Mid-Infrared Light Emitting Diode (MIR-LED) and based on Differential Mode Excitation Photoacoustic (DME-PA) spectroscopy is presented. A MIR-LED light source in combination with optical correlation is used for simplicity and compactness. The sensing setup takes advantage of the non-linearity in the excitation of various acoustic modes in a cylindrical resonant photoacoustic cell to provide a high selectivity. The sensing device is tested using methane and hydrocarbon mixtures (propane, butane). The obtained limit of detection for methane is 25 ppm m^-1. Using the presented DME-PA scheme, the derived gas concentration is hardly affected neither by intensity fluctuations of the light source nor by any microphone or electronics drifts. Furthermore, a considerably improved selectivity is obtained compared to conventional Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) techniques.
