Abstract
The reemergence of primitive reflexes (PRs) in older age is related to cognitive impairment. Currently, there are no means to prevent or slow their reappearance, but research evidence exists for their control in children. Therefore, this experiment investigated whether a 16-week special sensorimotor exercise program could benefit older adults and whether the intervention-induced changes (if any) may be associated with various indices of mental health. Of 115 adults over 60, 95 completed the study (mean age = 76.37 ± SD = 7.04 years, 22 % men). The experimental group (n = 38) showed an almost threefold decline in PRs compared to controls. In contrast, the control group (n = 57) exhibited a nearly threefold increase in PRs compared to the intervention group. Cognitive function increased in the experimental but not in the control group. Changes in PRs over the 16-week intervention were positively related to negative mental health indices (hopelessness and perceived stress) and negatively related to well-being. These findings suggest that the here-presented mild sensorimotor exercises could affect older adults' reemerging PRs and that changes in PRs are associated with mental health benefits. These results may open new research avenues toward preventing cognitive and psychological decline in older adults.

Abstract
(1) Background: Contracting diseases or being exposed to adverse environmental factors in the first year of life may impair the development of body posture and motor coordination. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between data on the speed of passive verticalization, the number of risk factors and the quality of development in the first year of life, and the results of the functional examination of these individuals in adolescence. (2) Methods: Two groups of 60 volunteers, aged 9-14 years, were examined by performing functional tests and the retrospective analysis of their development up to the age of 1 year. The first group consisted of patients diagnosed with postural defects. The control group consisted of healthy people of the same age who volunteered for this study. (3) Results: Statistical analysis showed statistically significant differences between groups in terms of posture (p = 0.001), motor coordination (p = 0.001), and accumulated primitive reflexes (p = 0.001), as well as a high correlation between these disorders and the quality of development in the first year of life. In the first group, for the ages of 3-6 months (r = 0.96; p = 0.001), 6-9 months (r = 0.871; p = 0.001), and 9-12 months (r = 0.806; p = 0.001), no significant correlations were found with the age of 0-3 months. In the second group, the results were as follows: 0-3 months (r = 0.748; p = 0.001), 3-6 months (r = 0.862 p = 0.001), 6-9 months (r = 0.698; p = 0.001), and 9-12 months (r = 0.740; p = 0.001). In the group of adolescents with posture defects, we observed an earlier time of passive verticalization and sitting, as well as more frequent use of loungers, seats, and walkers (p = 0.026). (4) Conclusions: The analysis of this study's data indicates that the development of body posture and motor coordination may be impaired due to accelerated and passive verticalization in the first year of life.

Abstract
Introduction Primitive reflexes (PR) induce involuntary automatic movements in response to specific stimuli. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of active PR in young high-level football players. Methodology Sixty-nine national-level football players from a French academy were tested (17.0 ± 1.4 years; 69.6 ± 8.0 kg; 178.9 ± 6.9 cm) to evaluate the persistence of PR, following the methodology of the Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology (INPP) and the classification by a global score (GS). Based on the sum of seven tests, each was rated between 0 = null and 4 = max. The GS is classified into five categories from no activity to maximal (0-1 = no activity, 2-7 = low, 8-13 = medium, 14-21 = high, and 22-28 = maximal). Result Around two-thirds (68.1%) of players presented active PR at different activity levels. Among them, a small proportion (7.2%) had medium GS, while 60.9% had a low GS. The GS was not dependent on field position or the age of the players (p > 0.05). However, playing football in an age category higher than their own was associated with significantly more active primitive reflexes (PR) compared to being in their age category (p < 0.01). The results showed that 72.7% of "upgraded" football players had low GS and 18.2% had medium GS, compared to 55.3% and 2.1% in the non-upgraded group. Discussion The findings of the current study demonstrate that PR could still be active in a healthy population of high-level football players. Practicing a single sport for years and upgrading players could create a negative environment that can ultimately lead to the activation of otherwise integrated PR.

Abstract
3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaric acidemia (HMGA) is a neurometabolic inherited disorder characterized by the predominant accumulation of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaric acid (HMG) in the brain and biological fluids of patients. Symptoms often appear in the first year of life and include mainly neurological manifestations. The neuropathophysiology is not fully elucidated, so we investigated the effects of intracerebroventricular administration of HMG on redox and bioenergetic homeostasis in the cerebral cortex and striatum of neonatal rats. Neurodevelopment parameters were also evaluated. HMG decreased the activity of glutathione reductase (GR) and increased catalase (CAT) in the cerebral cortex. In the striatum, HMG reduced the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, CAT, GR, glutathione S-transferase, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. Regarding bioenergetics, HMG decreased the activities of succinate dehydrogenase and respiratory chain complexes II-III and IV in the cortex. HMG also decreased the activities of citrate synthase and succinate dehydrogenase, as well as complex IV in the striatum. HMG further increased DRP1 levels in the cortex, indicating mitochondrial fission. Finally, we found that the HMG-injected animals showed impaired performance in all sensorimotor tests examined. Our findings provide evidence that HMG causes oxidative stress, bioenergetic dysfunction, and neurodevelopmental changes in neonatal rats, which may explain the neuropathophysiology of HMGA.

Abstract
This teaching review aims to provide an overview of the current approach to children with cerebral palsy (CP), retrieving the best available evidence and summarizing existing knowledge in the field of CP in children. We also highlight areas where more research is needed and novel strategies for diagnosing and treating cerebral palsy. CP includes a group of permanent disorders of movement and posture that cause activity limitation. Multiple risk factors, occurring preconceptionally, prenatally, perinatally, or postneonatally, are involved in the pathogenesis of CP, with the prenatal ones accounting for 80-90 % of cases. Due to its heterogeneity, CP has various classifications, but usually is classified based on clinical findings and motor impairment. Standardized function classification systems have been developed to address inconsistencies in previous classifications. The combination of clinical assessment and validated predictive tools is recommended for an early diagnosis, which is important for early intervention and prevention of secondary impairments. The therapeutic regimen in CP involves prevention and management of the motor and associated problems. It includes the enhancement of motor performance, the enrichment of cognition and communication skills, the prevention of secondary impairments, and the support of parents and caregivers. The care of CP children demands a multidisciplinary approach focused on improving motor skills, reducing comorbidities, enhancing the quality of life, and prolonging survival.

Abstract
The sensory-collapse test (formerly the scratch-collapse test) is a physical examination finding describing a momentary inhibition of external shoulder rotation following light stimulation of an injured nerve in the ipsilateral limb. Similar to other physical examination tests designed to interrogate nerve compression, such as the Phalen or Tinel tests, its test characteristics demonstrate variation. There remains speculation about the test's existence and anatomic basis. The literature of mammalian reflex physiology was reviewed with an emphasis on the sensory pathways from the upper extremity, the extrapyramidal system, and newly discovered pathways and concepts of nociception. A clear reflex pathway is described connecting the stimulus within an injured nerve through the afferent pathways in the fasciculus cuneatus in the spinal cord directly to the lateral reticulospinal tract, resulting in the inhibition of extensor muscles in the proximal limb (eg, shoulder) and activation of the limb flexors by acting upon alpha and gamma motor neurons. The sensory-collapse test represents a reflex pathway that teleologically provides a mechanism to protect an injured nerve by withdrawal toward the trunk and away from the noxious environment.

Abstract
This study aimed to systematically review evidence of the association between learning disorders, motor function, and primitive reflexes in preschool children. Seven databases were systematically searched (EMBASE, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, Medline, PsycINFO, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane) with no restrictions. Inclusion criteria were full text peer-reviewed articles reporting new empirical data, assessing any two of three phenomena in preschool children: learning disorders, motor function, or primitive reflexes. Intervention studies or studies examining congenital, chromosomal or acquired neurological, or pathological conditions and prematurity were excluded. Included papers (n = 27) were assessed for methodological quality by the Hoy et al. Risk of bias tool. Learning and motor function were assessed in all except two articles and motor deficits found to be associated with speech/language and executive function as well as several areas of academic performance. Three studies included primitive reflexes, with high levels of the asymmetrical tonic neck reflex positively correlated with fine motor skills, "school readiness" and "impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattention." Caution must be used when interpreting the review results due to significant study heterogeneity. Further research is needed to further understand common underlying mechanisms that may inform earlier diagnostic methods for these three phenomena. PROSPERO: CRD42021265793.

Abstract
Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in motor skills, with gross and fine motor dysfunction being the main symptom. This condition greatly impairs children's daily life, learning, and social interaction. Symptoms typically appear during preschool or school age, and if left untreated, they can persist into adulthood. Thus, early assessment and intervention are crucial to improve the prognosis. This study aims to review the existing literature on DCD, providing a comprehensive overview of the assessment for children with DCD in terms of body functions and structures, activities and participation, and environmental factors within the framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health - Children and Youth (ICF-CY). Additionally, specific rehabilitation interventions will be described, offering valuable insights for the clinical assessment and intervention of children with DCD.

Abstract
Childhood is a period of construction of the organism, during which interactions with the environment and regular physical activity are necessary for the maturation of the neuronal networks. An atypical sensorimotor activity during childhood (due to bed-rest or neurodevelopmental disorders) impacts the development of the neuromuscular system. A model of sensorimotor restriction (SMR) developed in rats has shown that casting pups' hind limbs from postnatal day 1 (P1) to P28 induced a severe perturbation of motor behavior, due to muscle weakness as well as disturbances within the central nervous system. In the present study, our objective was to determine whether SMR affects the early postnatal ontogenesis. We explored the neuromuscular development through the determination of the age for achievement of the main neurodevelopmental reflexes, which represent reliable indicators of neurological and behavioral development. We also evaluated the maturation of postural control. Our results demonstrate that SMR induces a delay in the motor development, illustrated by a several days delay in the acquisition of a mature posture and in the acquisition reflexes: hind limb grasping, righting, hind limb placing, cliff avoidance, negative geotaxis. In conclusion, impaired physical activity and low interactions with environment during early development result in altered maturation of the nervous system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) is a standardized assessment that identifies early signs of cerebral palsy (CP). In practice, the clinician performs this assessment in its entirety, yielding a global score. This study aimed to investigate the individual HINE subscores and "asymmetries" as predictive indicators of CP. METHODS In this retrospective nested case-control study, a pediatric neurologist performed the HINE on a cohort of three- to four-month-old former neonatal intensive care unit infants. The infants' neurodevelopmental outcomes were determined by chart review when they were aged two to three years. We performed univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses to yield the accuracy of the global HINE score, HINE subscores, and "asymmetries" in classifying infants with and without CP. RESULTS Of the 108 infants on whom HINE was performed, 50 were either discharged due to normal developmental progress or were lost to follow-up. Of the remaining 58 subjects, 17 had CP and 41 did not. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves of univariate models yielded the following area under the curve (AUC) scores: global HINE score (AUC = 0.75), "reflexes and reactions" (AUC = 0.80), "cranial nerve function" (AUC = 0.76), "asymmetries" (AUC = 0.75), and "movements" (AUC = 0.71). The ROC for our multivariable model (AUC = 0.91) surpassed the global HINE score's predictive value for CP. CONCLUSIONS The weighted combination of HINE subscores and "asymmetries" outperforms the global HINE score in predicting CP. These findings suggest the need for revisiting HINE, but further validation with a larger dataset is required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to assess the effect of neonatal treatment with kaempferol on neuromotor development, proliferation of neural precursor cells, the microglia profile, and antioxidant enzyme gene expression in the hippocampus. METHODS A rat model of cerebral palsy was established using perinatal anoxia and sensorimotor restriction of hindlimbs during infancy. Kaempferol (1 mg/ kg) was intraperitoneally administered during the neonatal period. RESULTS Neonatal treatment with kaempferol reduces the impact of the cerebral palsy model on reflex ontogeny and on the maturation of physical features. Impairment of locomotor activity development and motor coordination was found to be attenuated by kaempferol treatment during the neonatal period in rats exposed to cerebral palsy. Neonatal treatment of kaempferol in cerebral palsy rats prevents a substantial reduction in the number of neural precursor cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, an activated microglia profile, and increased proliferation of microglia in the sub-granular zone and in the granular cell layer. Neonatal treatment with kaempferol increases gene expression of superoxide dismutase and catalase in the hippocampus of rats submitted to the cerebral palsy model. DISCUSSION Kaempferol attenuates the impact of cerebral palsy on neuromotor behavior development, preventing altered hippocampal microglia activation and mitigating impaired cell proliferation in a neurogenic niche in these rats. Neonatal treatment with kaempferol also increases antioxidant defense gene expression in the hippocampus of rats submitted to the cerebral palsy model.

Abstract
The structural development of the vestibular part of the inner ear is completed by birth but its central connections continue to develop until adolescence. Their development is dependent on vestibular stimulation-vestibular experience. Studies have shown that vestibular function, modulated by experience and epigenetic factors, is not solely an instrument for body position regulation, navigation, and stabilization of the head and images but also influences cognition, emotion, the autonomous nervous system and hormones. To emphasize the importance of appropriate vestibular stimulation, we present a literature review of its effect on bodily homeostasis, cognition and emotion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE An abnormality in muscular tone, lack of postural control, and a lack of coordination are all linked to the retention of primitive and immature postural reflexes. The Purpose of this study aimed of detecting which therapeutic approach is more effective in integrating retained primitive reflexes, either Masgutova neuro-sensorimotor reflex integration or Sensory integration (SI) program. METHODS Forty children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP) (11 girls and 29 boys), involved in the current study and their ages ranged from 3 to 6 years old. They were divided at random into two groups (A and B), patients in the study group (A) (n = 20) were treated by Masgutova neuro-sensorimotor reflex integration program (MNRI) while those of study group (B) (n = 20), were subjected to Sensory integration program (SIP), A standardized physical treatment regimen was provided to both groups (Stretching exercise, Strengthening exercise, and facilitation of developing motor milestones) All children were evaluated by using GMFM-88 and (PDMS-2) reflexes subtest before and after treatment that lasted for three successive months at a frequency of three sessions per week. RESULTS There was a statistically substantial increase in GMFM scores and control of primitive reflexes post treatment in each group compared to those of the pretreatment mean values (p > 0.05). There was also a statistically non-significance difference between group A and group B regarding post treatment results (p > 0.05). IMPLICATIONS ON PHYSIOTHERAPY PRACTICE SI and MNRI programs can equally be used in the treatment of children with spastic CP who suffer from retained primitive reflexes and delayed gross motor function.

Abstract
Classic Bayesian models of perceptual inference describe how an ideal observer would integrate 'unisensory' measurements (multisensory integration) and attribute sensory signals to their origin(s) (causal inference). However, in the brain, sensory signals are always received in the context of a multisensory bodily state-namely, in combination with other senses. Moreover, sensory signals from both interoceptive sensing of one's own body and exteroceptive sensing of the world are highly interdependent and never occur in isolation. Thus, the observer must fundamentally determine whether each sensory observation is from an external (versus internal, self-generated) source to even be considered for integration. Critically, solving this primary causal inference problem requires knowledge of multisensory and sensorimotor dependencies. Thus, multisensory processing is needed to separate sensory signals. These multisensory processes enable us to simultaneously form a sense of self and form distinct perceptual decisions about the external world. In this opinion paper, we review and discuss the similarities and distinctions between multisensory decisions underlying the sense of self and those directed at acquiring information about the world. We call attention to the fact that heterogeneous multisensory processes take place all along the neural hierarchy (even in forming 'unisensory' observations) and argue that more integration of these aspects, in theory and experiment, is required to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of multisensory brain function. Abstract
Introduction The characteristic feature of primitive reflexes is that they occur early in development and must expire at a well-defined age. The study was conducted prospectively on a group of 107 children (74 boys). The study population included 83 infants born on time (weight 3,465 ± 395 g) and 24 born prematurely (weight 2,225 ± 793 g). Methods An analysis of motor development at 3 months of age consisting of a qualitative assessment (motor performance) and a check of reflexes was performed; at 9 months, the child was checked for crawling and sitting down, and at 16 months for walking. Results The more abnormal reflexes, the less likely it was to achieve the assessed milestones in time. It is possible to notice that the qualitative assessment is, in each case, a better predictor of the milestones than any of the reflexes, except for walking, where the Babkin reflex was strongly predictive. However, the qualitative assessment sum still occupies the second and third positions in prone and supine positions. Discussion The occurrence of Babkin's reflex at 3 months of age impacts the achievement of sitting down and walking functions. An abnormal Galant reflex was strongly associated with the lack of occurrence of crawling on time. At the same time, a high-quality score at 3 months of age guarantees the development of crawling on time, sitting down, and walking.

OBJECTIVE Segmental spinal dysgenesis (SSD) is a rare congenital spinal abnormality affecting the thoracic and lumbar region of the spine, as well as the spinal cord of neonates and infants. The purpose of the study was to analyze our institution's surgical case series to provide insights into our best practices to contribute to SSD management principles, while conducting a comprehensive literature review. METHODS Following institutional review board approval, a retrospective review of SSD surgical cases was examined to observe clinical findings, radiographic findings, management, surgical intervention, and outcomes. Keywords in the comprehensive literature review included SSD, congenital spinal dysgenesis, congenital spinal stenosis, spinal aplasia, and surgery. RESULTS Three cases underwent successful surgical management with either improvement or maintenance of neurological baseline. Patients were diagnosed at an average age of 2.7 months, while surgical intervention averaged at 40.3 months with fecal incontinence, neurogenic bladders, spinal cord compression, clubfoot, and concerns for worsening spinal deformity as surgical indicators. The average time for follow-up was 33.7 months and no complications were reported. CONCLUSIONS Operative management for SSD is a clinically complex decision that requires multidisciplinary input and care. Patients should be observed at neurological baseline and receive intervention at the appropriate time to allow sufficient growth for functioning without permitting drastic disease progression. Consideration of patient size and spinal instrumentation are significant towards surgical success.

Is lactational sertraline exposure safe for maternal health and the reproductive/neurobehavioral development of the descendants? A study in rats. Reprod Toxicol 2023; 117:108356. Abstract
Although sertraline is considered one of the safest antidepressants in the lactation period, there are still few studies that assess its impact on child development. Therefore, this experimental study aimed to clarify the effect of sertraline on the neurobehavioral and reproductive development of male rats. Thus, 30 lactating rats were divided into 3 experimental groups (n = 10/group): CO- received filtered water, S10 and S20 groups that received, respectively, 10 and 20 mg/kg/day of sertraline. Treatment was performed by gavage, from postnatal days (PND) 1-20. During this period, the reflex and somatic development of rats were observed, as well as maternal behavior. On PND 21, mothers were euthanized and the organs were weighed. On PND 21, 45, and 100, one male from each litter was euthanized for histological and immunohistochemical (PCNA and WT1) analysis of the reproductive organs. The growth of body weight, the anogenital distance (AGD), the time to puberty, sperm quality, sexual behavior, neurobehavior, and natural fertility were also verified. Statistical analysis: One-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test (p ≤ 0.05). The results showed that mothers in the S20 group had an increase in thyroid weight. The male offspring exposed to sertraline had lower body weight (PND 7), lower AGD (PND 7 and 14), and delay in reflex development, in addition to histological alterations in the testis (PND 21). In adulthood, sperm quality was altered, without compromising natural fertility. Therefore, the present study found important alterations in the reflex and reproductive development of male rats exposed to sertraline during lactation.

Abstract
The aim of the pilot project was to research relationships between the occurrence and level of intensity of primitive reflexes in primary school children, the ability to read an analogue clock and to tell the time. A group of 28 children (14 girls and 14 boys) who attended Montessori Primary School was examined. In the first stage, participants were assessed for the presence of five primitive reflexes (PR): the asymmetrical tonic neck reflex (ATNR), symmetrical tonic neck reflex (STNR), spinal Galant reflex, tonic labyrinthine reflex (TLR) and Palmar grasp reflex. Romberg's test was employed to identify signs of difficulties with control of balance and/or proprioception. In the second stage, pupils underwent tests that challenged their ability to read a clock and calculate passing time. After summing up points obtained for all tests, a correlation coefficient was made from which the results were derived. There is a negative correlation between the ability to read an analogue clock and the continued presence of some primitive reflexes. Lower neuromotor maturity (higher points of PR) correlates with lower ability to read a clock. The highest correlations between difficulty with telling the time were found with persistence of the STNR, ATNR and Romberg's test.

Abstract
Background: Administration of the Einstein Neonatal Neurobehavioral Assessment Scale (ENNAS) can be time-consuming, and items can be highly correlated. We aimed to determine: (1) its factor analytic structure; (2) the validity of the factor structure; and (3) the associations of physiologic measures with factor scores. Methods: A factor analysis reduced 21 ENNAS items into 5 factors in 57 congenital heart disease (CHD) and 35 healthy infants. Multiple linear regressions examined the association of factor scores with group, gestational age, and physiologic variables. Results: 5-factor solution: 1 (Orienting Reflex), 2 (Extensor Axial Tone), 3 (Primitive Reflexes), 4 (Flexor Tone), 5 (Reflexive Tone Around Extremity Joints). Moderate to strong evidence supported: face, discriminant, and construct validity of these factors, with Factor 2 having the strongest. Conclusions: Components of Factor 2 may provide similar information about neonatal development, thus reducing the time for and burden of administration for researchers and clinicians.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Not much is known about developmental motor disorders in the first year of life of children diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis (IS). OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare the occurrence of asymmetry or muscle tone disorders in the first year of life in adolescents with IS and their healthy counterparts. METHODS The parents of adolescents with IS and without scoliosis completed a survey on the occurrence of asymmetry, abnormal muscle tone, and physiotherapy in their children in the first year of life. Pearson's chi square test and Cramer's coefficient were used. RESULTS The final analysis included 527 surveys completed by parents of adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (150) and without scoliosis (377). A significantly higher frequency of asymmetry (p= 0.001) and muscle tone disorders (p= 0.001) was noted in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. The results also revealed a significant association between scoliosis and asymmetry (p= 0.001), as well as muscle tone (p= 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Developmental asymmetry or improper muscle tone in the first year of life could be considered a potential factor in the development of scoliosis; however, this hypothesis should be confirmed in future studies. Infants diagnosed with developmental disorders require systematic observation.

Abstract
We provide evidence to support the contention that many aspects of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are related to interregional brain functional disconnectivity associated with maturational delays in the development of brain networks. We think a delay in brain maturation in some networks may result in an increase in cortical maturation and development in other networks, leading to a developmental asynchrony and an unevenness of functional skills and symptoms. The paper supports the close relationship between retained primitive reflexes and cognitive and motor function in general and in ASD in particular provided to indicate that the inhibition of RPRs can effect positive change in ASD.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction: Children and adolescents with spastic quadriparesis have a worse selective motor control, and studies with this population are still very scarce. The same is true with scientific evidence of one of the methods most used as a physiotherapeutic treatment in this population, the Bobath Concept. Objective: To evaluate spine erector muscles activation, gluteus medius and gluteus maximus, through the handling of the Bobath Concept and the sustained kneeling posture in subjects with a diagnosis of severe cerebral palsy; and to compare muscle activation with a reference group, in order to increase the reliability of this study. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 38 children and adolescents with cerebral palsy, classified by GMFCS at levels IV and V, and 20 healthy participants, aged between 3 and 18 years. They were submitted to the handling of the Bobath Concept and to the sustained kneeling posture, with muscle activation obtained by electromyography. Results: We observed significant muscle activation during handling in side-sitting, with weight transfer and without the help of another therapist, and in the sustained kneeling posture, for the erector of the spine and gluteus medius. Conclusion: The evidence from this study suggests that both the handling in side-sitting and the sustained kneeling posture cause significant muscle activation in the erector of the spine and gluteus medius for severe quadriparesis subjects, GMFCS IV and V, which can contribute to the improvement of postural control and decision-making in physical therapy practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a major cause of epilepsy and chronic neurologic morbidity in premature infants. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of acute seizures and the pattern of background activity on amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) in neonatal rats with HIE. METHODS Hypoxia-ischemia (HI) was induced in postnatal day (P) 3 neonatal rats (n = 12) by ligation of the left carotid artery and exposure to airtight hypoxia for 2 h. Data regarding seizure type, frequency, and duration and those related to neurobehavioral development were collected, and the integrated power of background EEG was analyzed to evaluate the effect of HI. RESULTS All neonatal rats in the HI group experienced frequent seizures during hypoxia, and 83.3% of rats (10/12) experienced seizures immediately after hypoxia. Seizure frequency and duration gradually decreased with increasing age. The mortality rate of the HI group was 8.33% (1/12); 120 h after HI induction, only 27.3% (3/11) of pups had low-frequency and short-duration electrographic seizures, respectively. HI rats, which presented seizure activities 96 h after HI insult, exhibited an increase in righting reflex time and a decrease in forelimb grip reflex time. Background EEG was significantly inhibited during HI induction and immediately after hypoxia and gradually recovered 72 h after hypoxia. CONCLUSION Seizures caused by HI brain damage in premature infants can be simulated in the P3 neonatal rat model.

Abstract
Assessment of an infant's condition in the delivery room represents a prerequisite to adequately initiate medical support. In her seminal paper, Virginia Apgar described five parameters to be used for such an assessment. However, since that time maternal and neonatal care has changed; interventions were improved and infants are even more premature. Nevertheless, the Apgar score is assigned to infants worldwide but there are concerns about low interobserver reliability, especially in preterm infants. Also, resuscitative interventions may preclude the interpretation of the score, which is of concern when used as an outcome parameter in delivery room intervention studies. Within the context of these changes, we performed a critical appraisal on how to assess postnatal condition of the newborn including the clinical parameters of the Apgar score, as well as selected additional parameters and a proposed new scoring system. The development of a new scoring system that guide clinicians in assessing infants and help to decide how to support postnatal adaptation is discussed. IMPACT: This critical paper discusses the reliability of the Apgar score, as well as additional parameters, in order to improve assessment of a newborn's postnatal condition. A revised neonatal scoring system should account for infant maturity and the interventions administered. Delivery room assessment should be directed toward determining how much medical support is needed and how the infant responds to these interventions.

Children were treated at Non-public Specialist Healthcare Institution Medi-Reh in Kalisz in the period from 1 Jan 2014 to 31 Nov 2019. In our retrospective study results of three-month therapy of infants, aged 1 to 6 months, with CCD were analysed regards to the effectiveness and the potential impact of different factors. Therapy and assessment of children were conducted with the use of the Vojta method, which was performed during the first visit (WW) and the follow-up visit (after 3 months- 1WK). The analysis of the influence of various factors on the effect of therapy included: mother's age at the time of delivery, duration of breastfeeding, child APGAR, gestational age in which the child was born, sex of the child, birth weight, age of the child at WW, type of delivery, craniosacral therapy as an additive treatment. Results Based on the examination results from 66 medical records it was demonstrated that after active period of the therapy, improvement was observed in 54 (81.81%) (p=0.48) children (condition during WW versus 1WK among the group). The sole factor impacting improvement after 3 months was the age of the child at WW, when the child started therapy. This factor significantly (p=0.002) increased the chance of achieving improvement - by 3.2 times (OR= 3,2; CI= 95). No statistically significant differences were shown for the other studied factors. Conclusions Prompt implementation of rehabilitation in children with CCD provides a better chance of improving their motor function. The rehabilitation should be started as soon as possible after the diagnosis is constituted.

Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of the study was to investigate whether antenatal corticosteroid therapy (ACST) could impact neurological condition, as assessed through muscular tone, of prematurely born infants. METHODS All 82 patients at risk of preterm delivery treated and delivered over 12 months were divided into two equal groups regarding the use of ACST. The investigated parameters were pregnancy complications, biophysical profile, Apgar score, gestational age of delivery and all postpartum complications. Neurological development and muscular tone were evaluated at the 1st, 3rd, 6th and 12th months of life using Vojta's method, which classifies muscular tone as good, hypotonic or hypertonic. RESULTS After therapy, infants from the treated and control groups differed in biophysical profile, Apgar score, length of intensive care, occurrence of respiratory distress syndrome and intraventricular haemorrhage. During the follow-up, significantly more infants from the ACST group had good muscular tone when compared with those from the control group. Regression analysis showed that ASCT can significantly impact an infant's muscular tone. Still, the week of delivery and the complications such as diabetes mellitus, intrauterine growth restriction and respiratory distress syndrome, could change the association of ACST and infants' muscular tone. CONCLUSION ACST was associated with the positive neurological outcomes of prematurely born infants when assessed through their muscular tone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research suggests that motor difficulties may be closely associated with severe emotional and behavioural problems in children. However, there is limited research on the role of motor function in young adults who offend. AIMS To assess motor skills, balance, and primary reflex persistence in young people who offend, and to examine the relative association of different motor factors with self-reported levels of aggression. METHODS We recruited three groups of males (14-18 years); young people serving custodial sentences (n = 33) in a youth justice centre, and an IQ-matched comparison group (n = 36) and an average-IQ comparison group (n = 38) of non-offenders. All completed a standardised test of motor skills, clinical assessment protocols for balance and primary reflex persistence, and a standardised self-report behavioural rating scale. RESULTS The youth justice group showed significantly lower abilities in some motor skills and balance and significantly higher levels of primary reflex persistence and aggression than both comparison groups. In a multiple regression model, only manual dexterity (p = .032) and primary reflex persistence (p = .002) were significant predictors of aggression. CONCLUSIONS A broad range of motor difficulties are likely to occur in young people who offend. We discuss the implications of motor difficulties for approaches to rehabilitation of persistent offenders.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to determine the impact of umbilical cord arterial pH, gestational age, and birth weight on neurodevelopmental outcomes for preterm neonates. Methods We examined 112 neonates. Inclusion criteria were: Saturations greater than 88%, and heart rates between 100–205 beats per minute. Measurements We assessed several neurodevelopmental factors as part of the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS), 4th edition, such as asymmetric tonic neck reflex (ATNR), motor maturity, response to sensory stimuli, habituation, and state regulation. Initial assessment parameters such as APGAR score and umbilical cord arterial pH were used to assess neonates. Results We found a strong correlation between the presence of the sucking reflex and umbilical cord arterial pH (r = 0.32; p = 0.018981). Umbilical cord arterial pH was also correlated with the presence of asymmetric tonic neck reflex (r = 0.27; p = 0.047124), cost of attention (r = 0.31; p = 0.025381) and general motor maturity (r = 0.34; p = 0.011741). Conclusions We found that the sucking reflex may be affected in infants with low umbilical cord arterial pH values. Practitioners and parents can use the NBAS to help determine neurodevelopmental factors and outcomes in preterm infants, possibly leading to safer and more effective feeding practices and interventions.

Abstract
Psychomotor development in the first year of life is possible due to activity and then integration of primitive (neonatal) reflexes. The presence of active primitive reflexes (APRs) in preschool and school-aged children indicates neuromotor immaturity. Studies show dependencies between the preserved activity of primary reflexes and developmental problems such as learning difficulties (problems with reading, writing, reduced mathematics skills, and dyslexia), difficulties with coordination, and attention deficit. The primary purpose of this study is to present the activity of three tonic reflexes in a sample of 112 Polish children aged 4–6 in relation to their motor skills. The children were examined for the presence of the asymmetric tonic neck reflex (ATNR), symmetric tonic neck reflex (STNR), and tonic labyrinthine reflex (TLR). Motor performance was examined with the MOT 4–6. Statistical analysis shows an inverse correlation between the score in the test of reflexes and motor efficiency (MOT 4–6) at p < 0.05 (−0.33). Children with increased reflex activity presented a lower level of motor efficiency. The multiple regression model showed that with the older age of the child and the decrease in the level of reflex activity, the motor skills of children improve. Thus, there is a need for early screening of primitive reflexes in children. Properly selected exercises and therapeutic activities aimed at integrating APRs in children with developmental difficulties can improve their motor skills, perceptual abilities, and emotional behavior.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Injuries to the upper and middle trunks of brachial plexus result in dysfunction of radial nerves in newborns but do not in adults. We hypothesized that the radial nerve had a lower proportion of myelinated nerve fibers (MNFs) from the lower trunk in newborns than in adults, and in newborns those MNFs were less developed than MNFs in the radial nerve from the middle and upper trunks. METHODS We dissected bilateral brachial plexus of six newborn and six adult cadavers. The radial nerve and its fascicles were separated proximally to posterior divisions of the upper, middle and lower trunks, and fascicles of the radial nerve were harvested from three trunks to calculate respective percentage of MNFs accounting for the total number of MNFs in the radial nerve. We determined diameters of axons and g-ratios of MNFs in the radial nerve from three trunks. RESULTS Compared with adults, the percentage of MNFs in the radial nerve from the lower trunk was lower (p < 0.05), from the middle trunk higher (p < 0.05) and from the upper trunk similar (p > 0.05) in newborns, though MNF counts from three trunks were higher in newborns, respectively (p < 0.01, all). In newborns, MNFs in the radial nerve from the lower trunk had smaller axonal diameters and higher g-ratios than those from the middle and upper trunks (p < 0.017, all), while in adults there were no such differences. CONCLUSIONS Lower proportion of MNFs in the radial nerve from the lower trunk in newborns than in adults, and in newborns immaturity of MNFs from the lower trunk relative to MNFs from the middle and upper trunks may be the major morphological basis of difference in clinical appearances of radial nerve palsy caused by injuries to C5-C6-C7 between newborns and adults.

Abstract
Oxygen deprivation in newborns leads to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, whose hallmarks are oxidative/nitrosative stress, energetic metabolism alterations, nutrient deficiency, and motor behavior disability. Zinc and taurine are known to protect against hypoxic-ischemic brain damage in adults and neonates. However, the combined effect of prophylactic zinc administration and therapeutic taurine treatment on intrauterine ischemia- (IUI-) induced cerebral damage remains unknown. The present work evaluated this issue in male pups subjected to transient IUI (10 min) at E17 and whose mothers received zinc from E1 to E16 and taurine from E17 to postnatal day 15 (PND15) via drinking water. We assessed motor alterations, nitrosative stress, lipid peroxidation, and the antioxidant system comprised of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Enzymes of neuronal energetic pathways, such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), were also evaluated. The hierarchization score of the protective effect of pharmacological strategies (HSPEPS) was used to select the most effective treatment. Compared with the IUI group, zinc, alone or combined with taurine, improved motor behavior and reduced nitrosative stress by increasing SOD, CAT, and GPx activities and decreasing the GSSG/GSH ratio in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Taurine alone increased the AST/ALT, LDH/ALT, and AST/LDH ratios in the cerebral cortex, showing improvement of the neural bioenergetics system. This result suggests that taurine improves pyruvate, lactate, and glutamate metabolism, thus decreasing IUI-caused cerebral damage and relieving motor behavior impairment. Our results showed that taurine alone or in combination with zinc provides neuroprotection in the IUI rat model.

Early Gross Motor Development Among Brazilian Children with Microcephaly Born Right After Zika Virus Infection Outbreak. J Dev Behav Pediatr 2021; 41:134-140. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the gross motor development of children with presumed congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) infection over the first 2 years of their lives. METHODS Seventy-seven children were assessed at the median ages of 11, 18, and 24 months, using the evaluative instrument Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-66). At the third assessment, the children with diagnoses of cerebral palsy (CP) were classified by severity through the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and stratified by topography indicating the predominantly affected limbs. With these instruments in combination and using the motor development curves as reference, the rate of development and functional ability were estimated. RESULTS At 2 years of age, all children had the diagnosis of CP. Seventy-four (96.1%) presented gross motor skills similar to those of children aged 4 months or younger, according to the World Health Organization's standard. The GMFM-66 median score among the 73 (94.8%) children with quadriplegia and GMFCS level V showed significant change between 11 and 18 months (p < 0.001) and between 11 and 24 months (p < 0.001). No significant difference (p = 0.076) was found between 18 and 24 months. CONCLUSION Despite showing some gross motor progress during the initial 18 months of life, these children with presumed congenital ZIKV infection and CP experienced severe motor impairment by 2 years of age. According to the motor development curves, these children with quadriplegia have probably already reached about 90% of their motor development potential.

Abstract
Objective: Cognitive and motor disintegration and other functional disturbances in various neuropsychiatric disorders may be related to inhibitory deficits that may manifest as a persistence or re-expression of primitive reflexes and few recent data suggest that these deficits may occur in Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Methods: We have tested a hypothesis to which extent ADHD symptoms and balance deficits are related to persisting primitive reflexes, such as Asymmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) and Symmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR) in 80 medication-naïve children with ADHD (40 boys and 40 girls) in the school age (8-11 years) and compared these data with a control group of 60 children (30 boys and 30 girls). Results: These data show new finding that ADHD symptoms and balance deficits are strongly and specifically associated with persistent ATNR in girls and STNR in boys. Conclusions: These results provide first evidence in medical literature that ADHD in girls and boys is specifically related to distinguished neurological developmental mechanisms related to disinhibition of primitive reflexes.

Abstract
Peripheral afferent input is critical for human motor control and motor learning. Both skin and deep muscle mechanoreceptors can affect motor behaviour when stimulated. Whereas some modalities such as vibration have been employed for decades to alter cutaneous and proprioceptive input, both experimentally and therapeutically, the central effects of mechanical pressure stimulation have been studied less frequently. This discrepancy is especially striking when considering the limited knowledge of the neurobiological principles of frequently used physiotherapeutic techniques that utilise peripheral stimulation, such as reflex locomotion therapy. Our review of the available literature pertaining to pressure stimulation focused on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and neuroimaging studies, including both experimental studies in healthy subjects and clinical trials. Our search revealed a limited number of neuroimaging papers related to peripheral pressure stimulation and no evidence of effects on cortical excitability. In general, the majority of imaging studies agreed on the significant involvement of cortical motor areas during the processing of pressure stimulation. Recent data also point to the specific role of subcortical structures, such as putamen or brainstem reticular formation. A thorough comparison of the published results often demonstrated, however, major inconsistencies which are thought to be due to variable stimulation protocols and statistical power. In conclusion, localised peripheral sustained pressure is a potent stimulus inducing changes in cortical activation within sensory and motor areas. Despite historical evidence for modulation of motor behaviour, no direct link can be established based on available fMRI and electrophysiological data. We highlight the limited amount of research devoted to this stimulus modality, emphasise current knowledge gaps, present recent developments in the field and accentuate evidence awaiting replication or confirmation in future neuroimaging and electrophysiological studies.

Abstract
The presence of active primitive reflexes (APRs) in healthy preschool children can be an expression of immaturity in the functioning of the nervous system. Their trace presence may not significantly affect the quality of child functioning. They may also undergo spontaneous and complete integration within the stages of child development. However, a higher level of active reflexes and their significant number can disturb sensory-motor development and lead to additional problems in a child’s motor activities, social life, and education. The main purpose of this study was to examine the types of sensory disorders noticed by parents of children, if any, that accompany the presence of active primitive reflexes. The study was conducted in a group of 44 preschool children (aged 4–6 years). The sensory profile of children was determined using Child Sensory Profile Cards, and Sally Goddard-Blythe tests were used to measure their primitive reflexes. The coefficient of determination (R-squared) indicated that the level of reflex activity was most strongly associated with sensory disorders such as dyspraxia, sensory-vestibular disorders, and postural disorders, at a level of p < 0.005. The obtained research results show that the examination of non-integrated reflexes might be a screening tool for children of preschool age. Knowledge of the subject of reflexes and their impact on sensory-motor functions may contribute to more accurate diagnoses of the causes of problems and higher effectiveness of possible therapy.

Abstract
Motoneurons of neonatal rodents show synchronous activity that modulates the development of the neuromuscular system. However, the characteristics of the activity of human neonatal motoneurons are largely unknown. Using a noninvasive neural interface, we identified the discharge timings of individual spinal motoneurons in human newborns. We found highly synchronized activities of motoneurons of the tibialis anterior muscle, which were associated with fast leg movements. Although neonates' motor units exhibited discharge rates similar to those of adults, their synchronization was significantly greater than in adults. Moreover, neonatal motor units showed coherent oscillations in the delta band, which is directly translated into force generation. These results suggest that motoneuron synchronization in human neonates might be an important mechanism for controlling fast limb movements, such as those of primitive reflexes. In addition to help revealing mechanisms of development, the proposed neural interface might monitor children at risk of developing motor disorders.

Abstract
AbstractPreterm infants are prone to have higher risks of morbidity, disability and developmental delay compared to term infants. The primitive reflexes, inborn behaviors found in early life development, are shown to be a good tool to assess the integrity of the central nervous system of infants and to predict potential malfunctions. Among these reflexes, the non-nutritive sucking reflex plays an important role in indicating congenital abnormalities in brain development and feeding readiness, especially for premature infants. Conventionally, pediatricians evaluate the oral sucking power qualitatively based on their experiences, by using a gloved finger put inside the infant’s mouth. Thus, more quantitative solutions to assess the sucking power of preterm infants are necessary to support healthcare professionals in their evaluation procedures. Here, we developed a silver nanowire (AgNW)-based flexible pressure sensor to measure the non-nutritive sucking power of infants. The flexible sensor was fabricated using silver nanowires deposited on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in a sandwich-like structure. The sensor based on the principle of strain gauge was attached to a ring-shaped connecting module, and then to a pacifier. The negative sucking pressure exerted by the infant deformed the sensor membrane, causing its electrical resistance to change without any contact between the infant’s mouth and the sensing element. The fabricated sensor was characterized and optimized to achieve both the suitable sensitivity and stability. Thanks to the excellent long-term electro-mechanical stability and high sensitivity, the developed sensor is expected to provide the means to quantitatively assess the non-nutritive sucking of infants, with a portable, low-cost, non-invasive and light-weight solution.

Abstract
Nasal irrigation is a grade A recommendation treatment, which is essential in many pathological conditions. Very heterogeneous practices are observed in paediatrics as a result of poor instruction in this technique. We propose to describe the nasal irrigation technique developed by a team of respiratory physiotherapists in Lille for the management of cystic fibrosis and bronchiolitis. This technique is intended for children over the age of 6 months, as it requires an oral breathing reflex and cough reflex that are not systematically acquired before this age. Nasal irrigation is performed on a 30° upward inclined plane on a calm and cooperative child, away from meals. The child is maintained gently, without pressure, in the fencing position with the head turned away from the practitioner. Using a continuous flow spray, the practitioner grasps the top of the upper nostril and irrigates the nostril for an average of 3 s (6mL per nostril). These steps are then repeated until satisfactory patency is achieved in both nostrils. This technique constitutes a practical tool to help healthcare professionals and parents perform nasal irrigation in young children over the age of 6 months.

Abstract
ZusammenfassungIn den letzten Jahrzehnten hat sich die Medizin technisch und wissenschaftlich massiv weiterentwickelt. Allerdings konnte v. a. die postgraduelle Ausbildung mit dieser rasenden Entwicklung nicht mithalten. Kollegen in allen Fächer beklagen einen Mangel an klinischer Ausbildung speziell in den Basisfertigkeiten der Medizin, der Anamneseführung und den klassischen Untersuchungstechniken. In aktuellen Ausbildungsevaluierungen der Ärztekammer Österreich werden die Defizite gut sichtbar. Außerdem wurden gemeinsame Faktoren, die über eine gute oder schlechte Bewertung der Ausbildung entscheiden, ermittelt. Dazu gehören u. a. die Umsetzung eines guten Ausbildungskonzepts und das Bemühen des Ausbildungsverantwortlichen um die Ausbildung. Selbst in der manuellen Medizin, seit jeher eine Disziplin, die auf eine gute klinische Untersuchung angewiesen ist, ist dieser Rückgang an Fertigkeiten zu beobachten. Auch zeichnet sich ein deutlicher Generationenkonflikt ab. Die älteren Generationen setzen Fertigkeiten voraus, die jüngeren möchten diese vermittelt bekommen. Verloren geht dabei die Weitergabe von Erfahrung, die wohl wichtigste ärztliche Tradition seit den Tagen von Hippocrates. Um Ausbildung zu strukturieren und Erfahrung schnell weiterzugeben, hat sich in der Medizin in den letzten Jahren zunehmend der Gebrauch von Checklisten und Simulationstraining bewährt. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird der „Außerferner Untersuchungsgang“ vorgestellt, d. h. die systematische Untersuchung eines Säuglings, bei der neurologische, orthopädische, manualmedizinische sowie allgemeinmedizinische Aspekte berücksichtigt werden.

Abstract
The time window for repair of the lower trunk is shorter than that of the upper trunk in patients with obstetric brachial plexus palsy. The denervated intrinsic muscles of the hand become irreversibly atrophic much faster than the denervated biceps. However, it is unclear whether the motor endplates of the denervated interosseous muscles degenerate more rapidly than those of the denervated biceps. In this study, we used a rat model of obstetric brachial plexus palsy of the right upper limb. C5–6 was lacerated distal to the intervertebral foramina, with concurrent avulsion of C7–8 and T1, with the left upper limb used as the control. Bilateral interossei and biceps were collected at 5 and 7 weeks. Immunofluorescence was used to assess the morphology of the motor endplates. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot assay were used to assess mRNA and protein expression levels of acetylcholine receptor subunits (α, β and δ), rapsyn and β-catenin. Immunofluorescence microscopy showed that motor endplates in the denervated interossei were fragmented, while those in the denervated biceps were morphologically intact with little fragmentation. The number and area of motor endplates, relative to the control side, were significantly lower in the denervated interossei compared with the denervated biceps. mRNA and protein expression levels of acetylcholine receptor subunits (α, β and δ) were significantly lower, whereas β-catenin protein expression was higher, in the denervated interossei compared with the denervated biceps. The protein expression of rapsyn was higher in the denervated biceps than in the denervated interossei at 7 weeks. Our findings demonstrate that motor endplates of interossei are destabilized, whereas those of the biceps remain stable, in the rat model of obstetric brachial plexus palsy. All procedures were approved by the Experimental Animal Ethics Committee of Fudan University, China (approval No. DF-187) in January 2016.

Abstract
In treating patients with obstetric brachial plexus palsy, we noticed that denervated intrinsic muscles of the hand become irreversibly atrophic at a faster than denervated biceps. In a rat model of obstetric brachial plexus palsy, denervated intrinsic musculature of the forepaw entered the irreversible atrophy far earlier than denervated biceps. In this study, isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation were examined in the intrinsic musculature of forepaw and biceps on denervated and normal sides at 3 and 5 weeks to identify dysregulated proteins. Enrichment of pathways mapped by those proteins was analyzed by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis. At 3 weeks, 119 dysregulated proteins in denervated intrinsic musculature of the forepaw were mapped to nine pathways for muscle regulation, while 67 dysregulated proteins were mapped to three such pathways at 5 weeks. At 3 weeks, 27 upregulated proteins were mapped to five pathways involving inflammation and apoptosis, while two upregulated proteins were mapped to one such pathway at 5 weeks. At 3 and 5 weeks, 53 proteins from pathways involving regrowth and differentiation were downregulated. At 3 weeks, 64 dysregulated proteins in denervated biceps were mapped to five pathways involving muscle regulation, while, five dysregulated proteins were mapped to three such pathways at 5 weeks. One protein mapped to inflammation and apoptotic pathways was upregulated from one pathway at 3 weeks, while three proteins were downregulated from two other pathways at 5 weeks. Four proteins mapped to regrowth and differentiation pathways were upregulated from three pathways at 3 weeks, while two proteins were downregulated in another pathway at 5 weeks. These results implicated inflammation and apoptosis as critical factors aggravating atrophy of denervated intrinsic muscles of the hand during obstetric brachial plexus palsy. All experimental procedures and protocols were approved by the Experimental Animal Ethics Committee of Fudan University, China (approval No. DF-325) in January 2015.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is growing evidence that children with motor difficulties are at risk of psychosocial problems and vice versa. However, it is not clear how far different aspects of motor function are predictive of psychosocial well-being in the context of other powerful factors, such as family upset, that are known to affect psychosocial development. AIMS To investigate the role of basic motor skills and primary reflex persistence in young children with severe emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD). SAMPLE From a total sample of 225 children, three groups were selected: children excluded from school (severe EBD) (n = 29), a male comparison group (n = 38), and a female comparison group (n = 45). The groups were matched (at group level) on age, IQ, and level of social disadvantage. METHOD All of the selected children completed a range of standardized motor, cognitive, social, and behavioural measures, as well as a clinical protocol for primary reflex persistence. RESULTS Children with severe EBD had significant levels of motor difficulties, primary reflex persistence, and family upset, as well as significant literacy problems, attention deficits, and raised levels of hyperactivity/impulsivity relative to the comparison groups. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that basic motor skills, primary reflex persistence, family upset, hyperactivity, and literacy were all significant predictors of psychosocial functioning. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that motor difficulties and primary reflex persistence may act as independent stressors of psychosocial functioning in children with EBD. We suggest that specific movement interventions should be adopted to complement existing provision for children at risk of psychosocial problems.

Abstract
This study investigated aging changes in protective balance and startle responses to sudden drop perturbations and their effect on landing impact forces (vertical ground reaction forces, vGRF) and balance stability. Twelve healthy older (6 men; mean age = 72.5 ± 2.32 yr, mean ± SE) and 12 younger adults (7 men; mean age = 28.09 ± 1.03 yr) stood atop a moveable platform and received externally triggered drop perturbations of the support surface. Electromyographic activity was recorded bilaterally over the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), middle deltoid, biceps brachii, vastus lateralis (VL), biceps femoris (BF), medial gastrocnemius (MG), and tibialis anterior (TA). Whole body kinematics were recorded with motion analysis. Stability in the anteroposterior direction was quantified using the margin of stability (MoS). Incidence of early onset of bilateral SCM activation within 120 ms after drop onset was present during the first-trial response (FTR) for all participants. Co-contraction indexes during FTRs between VL and BF as well as TA and MG were significantly greater in the older group (VL/BF by 26%, P < 0.05; TA/MG by 37%, P < 0.05). Reduced shoulder abduction between FTR and last-trial responses, indicative of habituation, was present across both groups. Significant age-related differences in landing strategy were present between groups, because older adults had greater trunk flexion (P < 0.05) and less knee flexion (P < 0.05) that resulted in greater peak vGRFs and decreased MoS compared with younger adults. These findings suggest age-associated abnormalities of delayed, exaggerated, and poorly habituated startle/postural FTRs are linked with greater landing impact force and diminished balance stabilization. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study investigated the role of startle as a pathophysiological mechanism contributing to balance impairment in aging. We measured neuromotor responses as younger and older adults stood on a platform that dropped unexpectedly. Group differences in landing strategies indicated age-associated abnormalities of delayed, exaggerated, and poorly habituated startle/postural responses linked with a higher magnitude of impact force and decreased balance stabilization. The findings have implications for determining mechanisms contributing to falls and related injuries.

Abstract
This focused review is based on earlier studies which have shown that both children and adults diagnosed as having developmental coordination disorder (DCD), benefited from sensorimotor therapy according to the method Retraining for Balance (RB). Different approaches and assessments for children and adults in regard to DCD are scrutinized and discussed in comparison to RB which mainly includes (a) vestibular assessment and stimulation (b) assessment and integration of aberrant primary reflexes and (c) assessment and stimulation of auditory and visual perception. Earlier results indicate that the process of Sensorimotor therapy using RB techniques could be described according to a conceptual Kinesthetic-Vestibular Developmental Model (KVDM) whereby the training elicited temporary physical and psychological regressions followed by transformations i.e., positive physical and psychological development. We have also seen that this recurring pattern is similar for children and adults. In our conceptual model vestibular stimulation (perceptual priming) stimulates the nervous system, which might enhance object-related priming. This perceptual priming will also assist the suppression of persistent aberrant primary reflexes. In order to develop effective methods for assessment and intervention of DCD over the life span the importance of primary reflex inhibition and vestibular stimulation as well as a combination of bottom-up and top-down approaches have to be considered.

Abstract
In typical motor development progress in use of goal-directed actions and communicative gestures depends on the inhibition of several primitive reflexes, especially those that involve the hand or mouth. This study explored the relationship between the persistence of primitive reflexes that involve the hand or mouth and the motor repertoire in a sample of 12- to 17-month-old infants. Moreover, since children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) often have difficulty in performing skilled movements and show poor gesture repertoire, and since ASD represents the upper extreme of a constellation of traits that may be continuously distributed in the general population, we investigated the relationship between the persistence of primitive reflexes in the same sample of infants and the subclinical autistic traits measured in their parents. Results revealed that the persistence of the primitive reflexes correlated with motor repertoire irrespective of infant's age, and it was greater among infants whose parents had more subclinical autistic traits. Our findings suggest that the persistence of primitive reflexes might alter the developmental trajectory of future motor ability and therefore their evaluation might be an early indicator of atypical development.

Abstract
Muscle synergies are proposed to function as motor primitives that are modulated by frontal brain areas to construct a large repertoire of movement. This paper reviews the history of the development of our current theoretical understanding of nervous system-based motor control mechanisms and more specifically the concept of muscle synergies. Computational models of muscle synergies, especially the nonnegative matrix factorization algorithm, are discussed with specific reference to the changes in synergy control post-central nervous system (CNS) lesions. An alternative approach for motor control is suggested, exploiting a combination of synergies control or flexible muscle control used for gross motor skills and for individualized finger movements. Rehabilitation approaches, either supporting or inhibiting the use of basic movement patterns, are discussed in the context of muscle synergies. Applications are discussed for the use of advanced technologies that can promote the recovery and functioning of the human CNS after stroke.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Retained primitive reflexes can disturb natural development and involve difficulties in social and educational children's life. They can also impact on psychomotor development. Mature responses in a child's psychomotor progress can only occur if the central nervous system itself has reached maturity. The process consist the transition made from brain stem reflex response to cortically controlled response. This study define the occurrence of primitive reflexes in healthy 4-6 years old children and analyze the impact of survived primitive reflexes on psychomotor development. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved 35 participants aged 4-6 years healthy preschool children. The study tools were: primitive reflexes tests by Sally Goddard for children and Motor Proficiency - Test (MOT 4-6 test) in 18 tasks. RESULTS Over a half (65%) preschool children had survived the primitive reflexes on the residual level. Eleven percent of them had no retained primitive reflexes. According to the psychomotor ability, 9% of the children were in the category of "altered development", 29% in "delayed development", 59% in "normal" and 3% in "very good development". The greater the severity of the reflex, the motor efficiency was lower (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS It seems reasonable to introduce reflexes integration therapy in children's with low psychomotor skills. Primitive reflexes routinely tested, can contribute to improved early psychomotor development in children with needs, thus preventing many difficulties which children can encounter within their social and school life.
