Abstract
OBJECTIVE This investigation identified the association between burn injuries and the risk of mental disorders in patients with no documented pre-existing psychiatric comorbidities. We also examined the relationship of injury severity and the types of injury with the likelihood of receiving new diagnoses of mental disorders. METHODS This population-based retrospective cohort study used administrative data extracted from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) between 2000 and 2013. In total, 10,045 burn survivors were matched with a reference cohort of 40,180 patients without burn injuries and were followed to determine if any mental disorder was diagnosed. Patients diagnosed with mental disorders in the five years before study initiation were excluded to ensure incident diagnoses throughout the research duration. Generalized estimating equations in Cox proportional hazard regression models were used for data analysis. RESULTS In general, burn injury survivors have a 1.21-fold risk of being diagnosed with new mental disorders relative to patients without burn injuries. Total body surface area (TBSA) of ≧ 30% (aHR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.36-1.63) and third- or fourth-degree burns (aHR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.37-1.63) had a significantly greater risk of being diagnosed with mental disorders in comparison to the reference cohort. Patients TBSA 10-29% (aHR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.77-0.93) and first- or second-degree burn victims (aHR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.81-0.97) had relatively lower risk of mental disorders than the reference cohort. CONCLUSION Burn injuries were associated with an increased risk of mental disorders. Additional research in this field could elucidate this observation, especially if the inherent limitations of the NHIRD can be overcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to assess health care needs, electronic health literacy, mobile phone usage, and intention to use it for self-management purposes by informal caregivers of children with burn injuries. METHODS This cross-sectional research was carried out in 2021 with 112 informal caregivers of children with burns in a burn center in the north of Iran. The data collection tools were questionnaires that included the participants' demographics, their E-Health Literacy, their current mobile phone usage, and their desires for mobile phone use for burn care services. RESULTS Most informal caregivers had smartphones (83.0%) and Internet access (81.3%). Most participants occasionally used phone calls (63.4%), the Internet (45.5%), and social media (42.9) to receive information about psychosocial disorders, infection control, wound care, pain, itch, physical exercise, and feeding. Most participants have never used some of the mobile phone functionalities to receive burn-related information, such as applications/Software (99.1%) and e-mail (99.1%). Nevertheless, most informal caregivers desire to use mobile applications for self-management purposes in the future (88.4%). The mean eHealth literacy score was 25.01 (SD = 9.61). Informal caregivers who had higher education levels, access to the Internet, and lived in urban areas had higher eHealth literacy (P < 001). CONCLUSION The current research delivers beneficial information about the healthcare needs of informal caregivers and their preference to use mobile functionality to receive burns-related healthcare and rehabilitation information post-discharge. This information can help design and implement mobile health (mHealth) interventions to enhance the self-care skills of informal caregivers.

Abstract
Paediatric burns are a major public health issue because of long-term physical, psychological and social consequences and the high cost of treatment. The aim of this study was to design and evaluate a mobile-based self-management application for caregivers of children with severe burns. A participatory design technique was employed to develop the Burn application, which included three main phases: the determination of application requirements, the design and evaluation of the low-fidelity prototype, and the design and evaluation of the high-fidelity prototypes. In the first phase, application requirements were determined via validated paper questionnaires using the Delphi technique. In the second step, a low-fidelity prototype was prepared using conceptual models and evaluated through a focus group with specialists. Seven specialists reviewed the application and evaluated how this prototype meets functional requirements and objectives. The third phase was performed in three stages. First, the high-fidelity prototype was designed and developed by the JAVA programming language. Second, a cognitive walk-through was carried out to show how users can interact with the mobile application and how it works. Third, this program was installed on the mobile phones of 28 caregivers of burned children, eight IT experts, and two general surgeries, and the prototype's usability was evaluated. In the present study, most caregivers of children with burns stated that after discharge, they face problems regarding infection control and wound care (4.07) and how to perform physical activity (4.12). User registration, educational materials, caregiver-clinician communication, chat box, and appointment booking, safe login were the most important characteristic of the Burn application. Mean usability evaluation scores were in the range of 7.92 ± 0.238 to 8.10 ± 0.103, which is considered at a "good" level. From the Burn program design experience, it can be concluded that co-design with health care specialists can significantly support and meet the specialists' and patients' needs and ensure the program's usefulness. In addition, application evaluation by users involved and not involved in the application design process can help enhance usability.

Differences in parent-perceived and patient-reported quality of life among young adult burn patients: A prospective longitudinal study. Burns 2021; 47:1878-1889. Abstract
PURPOSE This study examines the differences in parent-perceived and patient-reported quality of life (QoL) among young adult burn patients three years after injury and the factors affecting these differences. METHOD The sample comprised 35 burn patients from the Formosa Fun Coast Water Park dust explosion and their parents. The study was conducted from June 2016 to August 2018. We used self-report questionnaires to collect socio-demographic data, the adapted Chinese version of the Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief, and the Impact of Events Scale for Burn. RESULTS The analysis indicated that simple abilities recovered the fastest, while body image recovered the slowest. The variation trends of these factors were similar but parents' scores were lower than patients' scores. Parents' post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) scores were higher than that of patients, but were not statistically significant. Parents' gender and PTSD levels and patients' burn area affected differences in parent-perceived QoL among patients. PTSD levels were significantly higher among mothers. CONCLUSIONS For parents, PTSD is a common response to their children experiencing burn injuries. Parents' observations of warning signs enable early medical intervention. Establishing a family-centered care plan, providing psychological support for both parents and patients, and forming a continuous care system with efficient communication can support patients' return to society.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence, type, and associations of parental and child adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in children presenting with burn injuries. METHODS Parents of burned children completed an ACE-18 survey, including questions on parent and child ACEs, needs, and resiliency. Demographics, burn injury, hospital course, and follow up data were collected. Family needs and burn outcomes of children with and without ACEs' exposure (NO ACE vs. 1-2 ACE vs ≥ 3 ACE) was analyzed. P < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS Seventy-five children were enrolled; 58.7% were male, 69.3% white. The average age was 6.0 ± 5.2 years. The average total burn surface area was 4.4 ± 5.7% (0.1 to 27%). Parent ACE exposure correlated with child ACE exposure (r = 0.57; p = 0.001) and this intensified by increasing child age (p = 0.004). Child ACE exposure showed a graded response to family needs, including food and housing insecurity and childcare needs. Stress and psychosocial distress of the parents was significantly associated with their children's ACE burden. CONCLUSIONS The ACE burden of parents of burned children can affect the ACE load of their children. Burned children with more ACEs tend to have significantly more needs and more family distress. Awareness of past trauma can help identify a vulnerable population to ensure successful burn recovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common among burn patients and their family members. The objective of this study was to document the prevalence of PTSD and explore the sociodemographic and burn-specific associated factors of PTSD among Chinese burn survivors and their family members. METHODS A total of 131 adult patients with unintentional burns and 194 family members of burn patients were recruited from two burn units. All participants completed a general information form and the PTSD Checklist for the DSM-5 (PCL-5). RESULTS Fifty-five (42.0%) burn victims and ninety-nine (51.0%) family members of burn victims met the criteria for PTSD; the average score of the sample was 31.21 ± 21.56 and 33.16 ± 19.30. Logistic regression analysis revealed that middle age (45-55 years), poor economic status, greater total body surface area (TBSA) and longer time since the burn incident positively predicted the PTSD of patients and that female family members had a higher risk of PTSD. CONCLUSIONS Burn patients and their family members are susceptible to PTSD. Suitable and long-term psychological intervention programmes should be executed for burn patients and their family members.

Abstract
Living with a visible difference (e.g., disfigurement) can compromise a child's psychological wellbeing. Although some children can adjust well, others can develop a range of appearance-related issues such as social anxiety, low self-esteem, and body dissatisfaction. However, current research fails to confirm what factors contribute to appearance-related distress, and what factors buffer the consequences of living with a visible difference. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 16 Australian specialist health professionals who care for children with visible differences. Interviews explored the type of appearance-related psychosocial concerns presented to a pediatric hospital, perspectives on the impact of appearance-related distress, as well as factors and processes that health professionals perceive influence adjustment. Data were subjected to inductive thematic analysis. Rich evidence was offered by health professionals, which demonstrated deep understanding of the psychological wellbeing of their patients. Three themes were identified: Mind, Body, and Soul; Stages of Life; and Individual Differences. Findings highlighted the complexity of appearance-related distress, with individual differences in adjustment, and the powerful impact it can have on a child's short and long-term psychosocial wellbeing. The importance of reaching consensus in the conceptualisation and measurement of psychological wellbeing is stressed, and key domains associated with adjustment are proposed.

Abstract
Background
Paediatric burn injuries affect not only the child but the whole family, especially the parents. Knowledge of how parents are affected psychologically has increased, but there is an ongoing dearth of literature on parental support while hospitalised. There is also very little documentation of the ways in which burn staff members support parents.
Objectives
To explore staff members’ lived experiences of supporting parents with children hospitalised at a burn centre due to a burn injury.
Methods
Four focus group interviews were conducted in 2017 with a total of 21 staff members at the National Burn Centre in Norway. Seven different burn staff professions participated. Data were analysed using a Ricoeur-inspired method for text analysis and managed using NVivo 12Plus.
Results
Four themes were identified in the treatment trajectory: creating a safe, secure and trusting environment from the moment parents enter the burn centre; helping parents deal with feelings of guilt; helping parents navigate in their daily routines while continuing to be a mother or father; and gradually involving parents in wound treatment as preparation for discharge.
Conclusion
Staff must carefully consider their verbal and non-verbal (body) language and how to approach parents from the very moment they enter the burn ward. Most parents are affected by feelings of guilt and these feelings must be addressed and processed. During the treatment trajectory, parents are guided to participate in the daily care of their child and are gradually assisted in taking over the wound treatment prior to discharge.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to evaluate the feasibility and effects of an internet-based information and self-help program with therapist contact for parents of children and adolescents with burns. The program aimed to reduce parents' symptoms of general and posttraumatic stress. METHODS Participants were parents of children treated for burns between 2009-2013 at either of the two specialized Swedish Burn centers. Sixty-two parents were included in a two-armed, randomized controlled trial with a six-week intervention group and a wait-list control group, including a pre and post-assessment, as well as a 3 and 12-month follow-up. The intervention contained psychoeducation, exercises and homework assignments, and the intervention group received weekly written feedback from a therapist. The main outcome was stress (post-traumatic stress, general stress and parental stress). RESULTS The program had a beneficial effect on posttraumatic stress in the short term, but did not affect general stress or parental stress. The parents rated the program as being informative and meaningful, but some of them thought it was time-consuming. CONCLUSION The program has the potential to support parents of children with burns. The intervention is easily accessible, cost-effective and could be implemented in burn care rehabilitation.

Abstract
Parents of children with burns experience a range of psychological reactions and symptoms, and parents' health is known to impact children's health. So far, there is little research into potential mechanisms that maintain parents' symptoms. The aim was to investigate parental injury-related fear-avoidance, and its associations with injury severity and health measures. Parents (n=107) of children aged 0.4-18 years that sustained burns 0.1-9.0 years previously completed questionnaires on fear-avoidance, posttraumatic stress, and health of the child. Analyses showed that the average level of fear-avoidance was low and positively associated with measures of injury severity and parents' symptoms of posttraumatic stress, and negatively associated with parents' ratings of their child's health. In two separate multiple regressions with parents' symptoms of PTSD and the child's health as dependent variables, fear-avoidance made the largest contribution in both models while injury severity was non-significant. Results were not related to comorbid conditions of the child, scarring, or parent-related socio-demographic variables. In summary, injury-related fear-avoidance is more likely among parents whose children sustain more severe burns. In turn, fear-avoidance contributes significantly to parents' symptoms of PTSD and to poorer health ratings regarding the child, irrespective of injury severity or child comorbidity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Children sustaining burns that require treatment in a burn center have a need for multiprofessional aftercare services over a prolonged time. So far, there is little research into satisfaction with care and support after pediatric burns. The aim was to investigate parents' perception of support after pediatric burn and associations with parent, child and injury characteristics. METHOD Parents (n=101) of children aged 0.4-17.8 years completed questionnaires on support, parent's psychological symptoms and health of the child. Time since injury was 0.1-9.0 years. RESULTS Perceived lack of psychosocial, medical, societal or family support was reported by 21% of the parents. Lack of support was not associated with injury or sociodemographic characteristics, but it was significantly associated with parents' symptoms of general anxiety, depression and injury-related fear avoidance, as well as parents' ratings of their child's general health and heat sensitivity. CONCLUSION Perceived support did not differ on account of burn severity or sociodemographic status. However, care providers should be more attentive to and supportive of parents signaling poorer general health in their child and cognitive beliefs that the child is at risk for harm when active and parents who themselves show signs of psychological symptoms.

Abstract
Quality of life and functional recovery after burn injury is the final goal of burn care, especially as most of burn patients survive the injury due to advanced medical science. However, dysfunction, disfigurement, contractures, psychological problems and other discomforts due to burns and the consequent scars are common, and physical therapy and occupational therapy provide alternative treatments for these problems of burn patients. This guideline, organized by the Chinese Burn Association and Chinese Association of Burn Surgeons aims to emphasize the importance of team work in burn care and provide a brief introduction of the outlines of physical and occupational therapies during burn treatment, which is suitable for the current medical circumstances of China. It can be used as the start of the tools for burn rehabilitation.
