Abstract
OBJECTIVES The static and dynamic correlations of postural stability to its three potential contributors, namely, proprioception, tactile sensation, and strength remain unclear among people with chronic ankle instability (CAI). This study aimed to compare static and dynamic postural stability, along with proprioception, tactile sensation, and strength between people with and without CAI and explore their correlations. METHODS Sixty-seven participants with CAI and 67 participants without CAI were enrolled in this study. Ankle proprioception, plantar tactile sensation, and lower limb strength were measured by a proprioception test device, a set of monofilaments, and a strength testing system, respectively. Static and dynamic postural stability were measured during standing and jump landing on a force plate and indicated by the root mean square of center of pressure and time to stability. RESULTS Compared to people without CAI, people with CAI had poorer postural stability, proprioception, tactile sensation, and strength. Both groups demonstrated correlation between proprioception and static postural stability, but only people without CAI showed correlation between proprioception and dynamic postural stability. Both groups demonstrated a correlation between tactile sensation and static postural stability, but not with dynamic stability. Both groups demonstrated a correlation between strength and both static and dynamic postural stability. CONCLUSIONS People with CAI had deficits in static and dynamic postural stability, proprioception, tactile sensation, and strength. Among people with CAI, proprioception, tactile sensation, and strength can help maintain static postural stability; strength can help maintain dynamic postural stability, whereas proprioception may not provide sufficient information for dynamic postural stability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyse the association between Ankle-GO score during the return to sport process and the probability of becoming a coper 1 year after lateral ankle sprain (LAS). Copers were defined as patients returning to their preinjury sport without loss of function and reporting no episodes of reinjury or giving-way. METHODS Two months after a LAS, patients performed the Ankle-GO assessment which includes a cluster of four functional tests and two self-reported questionnaires for a maximum score of 25 points. One year after injury, participants were classified as copers or non-copers. Eight potential predictive variables associated with coper status were compared between the groups. Receiver operating characteristic curves (area under the curve (AUC)) and multivariable logistic regression models with OR and 95% CIs were used to determine the association of potential factors, including the Ankle-GO score, with copers. RESULTS 64 patients (56% females; age 33.7±13.2 years) completed the Ankle-GO-GO at 2 months postinjury. At 1 year postinjury, 10 patients (15%) were lost to follow-up, and only 17 of 54 patients (31%) became copers. Two-month Ankle-GO score was higher among copers (9.9±4.9 points vs 6.9±3.7, p=0.015) and was associated with future coper status at 1 year (AUC=0.70). Patients with an Ankle-GO score above 11 points and male patients were more likely to become copers (OR=12.1; 95% CI 2.5 to 59, p=0.002 and OR=5.2; 95% CI 1.2 to 22.4, p=0.026, respectively). CONCLUSION The Ankle-GO may help identify patients more likely to become copers within a year of injury. Those with low Ankle-GO scores and female patients should receive additional rehabilitation to increase the odds of becoming a coper.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is the most common sports injury, leading to a high rate of recurrence and the development of chronic ankle instability. One possible explanation is the lack of objective, evidence-based criteria to inform return to sport decisions following LAS. The aim of this study was therefore to assess the efficacy of a new functional score to distinguish patients at risk of recurrent LAS within two years after the initial injury. METHODS The Ankle-GO score was used in 64 active patients two months after LAS. This composite score includes 2 self-reported questionnaires and 4 functional tests, for a maximum score of 25 points. The rate of reinjury was prospectively recorded 2 years after inclusion. Potential predictive variables for reinjury were tested using the Chi-square and independent t-tests. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) with the optimal cut-off score was determined to assess the predictive value of the Ankle-GO score for the risk of reinjury. Multivariate logistic regression was then used to determine the influence of risk factors of reinjury. RESULTS Fifty-four (85%) patients were included (23 men and 31 women, 34.7 ± 13 years old) including 18 (33.3%) with a reinjury. The two-month Ankle-GO score was lower in patients with a recurrent LAS (5.4 ± 2.8 points vs. 9.1 ± 4.5, p = 0.002) and predicted the risk of reinjury (AUC = 0.75). Patients with < 8 points were found to have a significantly higher risk of reinjury (OR = 8.6; 95%CI: 2-37.2, p = 0.001). Women also tend to have a higher risk of recurrence (OR = 3.8; 95%CI: 0.9-15.5, p = 0.065). CONCLUSION The Ankle-GO score is a new objective criterion for RTS after LAS. Patients with a low score at two months have a 9-fold greater risk of recurrence within two years.

Abstract
CONTEXT Athletic trainers (ATs) inconsistently apply rehabilitation-oriented assessments (ROASTs) when deciding return-to-activity readiness for patients with an ankle sprain. Facilitators and barriers that are most influential to ATs' assessment selection remain unknown. OBJECTIVE To examine facilitators of and barriers to ATs' selection of outcome assessments when determining return-to-activity readiness for patients with an ankle sprain. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Online survey. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS We sent an online survey to 10 000 clinically practicing ATs. The survey was accessed by 676 individuals, of whom 574 submitted responses (85% completion rate), and 541 respondents met the inclusion criteria. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) The survey was designed to explore facilitators and barriers influencing ATs' selection of pain; ankle-joint swelling, range of motion, arthrokinematics, and strength; balance; gait; functional capacity; physical activity level; and patient-reported outcome assessments when making return-to-activity decisions for patients after an ankle sprain. The survey asked for reasons that participants chose to use or not use each measure (eg, previous education, personal comfort, most appropriate, available or feasible, perceived value, and other). The survey contained 12 demographic items that characterized the sample of respondents and were examined as potential influences on the facilitators and barriers. Chi-square analysis was used to identify relationships among participant demographics and facilitators of or barriers to assessment selection. RESULTS Selection of each ROAST and non-ROAST was most commonly facilitated by previous education, availability or feasibility, or perceived value. Avoidance of each ROAST was most often caused by the lack of previous education, availability or feasibility, or perceived value. The presence of facilitators and barriers was affected by various demographic variables. CONCLUSIONS A variety of facilitators and barriers affected ATs' implementation of expert-recommended assessments when determining return-to-activity readiness in patients with an ankle sprain. Some subpopulations of ATs experienced more favorable or prohibitive conditions for assessment use.

OBJECTIVES To identify ATs' methods for determining patients' return-to-activity readiness after an ankle sprain and demographic characteristics of the ATs and their methods. SETTING Online survey. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS We recruited 10 000 clinically practicing ATs. A total of 676 accessed the survey, 574 submitted responses (85% completion rate), and 541 respondents met the inclusion criteria. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) We distributed an online survey to ATs that asked about their assessment of pain, swelling, range of motion, arthrokinematics, strength, balance, gait, functional capacity, physical activity level, and patient-reported outcomes in deciding return to activity. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize participant demographics and frequencies of the assessment measures used by ATs. Chi-square analysis was conducted to identify relationships between the demographics and assessment selection. RESULTS Pain, swelling, range of motion, strength, balance, gait, and functional capacity were assessed by 76.2% to 96.7% of ATs. Arthrokinematics, physical activity level, and patient-reported outcomes were assessed by 25.3% to 35.1% of participants. When selecting specific assessment methods, ATs often did not use recommended ROASTs. Athletic trainers with higher degrees, completion of more advanced educational programs, employment in nontraditional settings, more clinical experience, and familiarity with expert consensus recommendations were more likely to use ROASTs. CONCLUSIONS Before approving return to activity for patients with ankle sprains, ATs did not use some recommended outcomes and assessment methods. Practice in nontraditional settings, more advanced degrees, more clinical experience, and familiarity with expert consensus guidelines appeared to facilitate the use of ROASTs.

Abstract
Chronic ankle instability arises from three interacting contributing factors: mechanical ankle instability, functional ankle instability, and perceived ankle instability. To decide on the most appropriate individual recommendation for therapeutic options, it is necessary to assess which of the two main aetiologies - functional vs. mechanical - is dominant in causing the perceived impairment. It is essential to perform a thorough analysis and diagnosis, even though quantifying mechanical ankle instability is still a challenge in the clinical approach to this common pathology. When diagnosing mechanical instability, the most established procedure is physical examination, although this unfortunately does not allow the deficit to be quantified. Additional options include stress-ultrasound, 3D stress-MRI (3SAM), ankle arthrometry, marker-based 3D motion analysis, and diagnostic ankle arthroscopy. Of these the latter is considered the gold standard, even though it is an invasive procedure, it may not be performed for diagnostic reasons only, and it also does not allow the mechanical instability to be quantified. For diagnosing functional instability there are non-instrumented tests such as the Star Excursion Balance Test or Y-Balance Test, posturography/stabilometry, and gait and running analysis, possibly combined with EMG acquisition and isokinetic strength testing.To date, the standard of care is conservative management of ankle instability, and the therapy should include sensorimotor training, strength training of the periarticular muscles, balance training, and gait and running exercises on different surfaces. However, it is increasingly clear that a certain degree of mechanical instability cannot be compensated for by functional training. Thus, it is the goal of differential diagnostics to identify those patients and guide them to mechanical therapy, including ankle bracing, taping, and surgical ligament reconstruction.

Abstract
Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is common, disabling, and represents a significant socioeconomic burden. Current treatment options are not adequately efficacious. CAI is multifaceted, yet it is commonly addressed in terms of either mechanical instability or functional impairment. Both are inherently linked. Basic research must be conducted to foster reliable translational research encompassing both mechanical and functional aspects. A review was conducted to identify CAI risk factors for inclusion in future studies, and we offer here opinions and perspectives for future research.

Abstract
Background A number of studies have evaluated risk factors for lateral ankle sprain (LAS) or chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI). However, the definitive risk factors for LAS or CLAI remain controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the contralateral healthy ankles of subjects with ipsilateral mechanical lateral ankle laxity (group I) show greater lateral ankle laxity in comparison to the healthy ankles of bilateral healthy controls (group B). Methods From March 2020, anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) lengths of young adult volunteers were cross-sectionally measured in non-stress and stress positions using a previously reported stress ultrasonography (US) procedure. The ATFL ratio (the ratio of stress ATFL/non-stress ATFL length) was calculated as an indicator of lateral ankle laxity. The manual anterior drawer test (ADT) was also performed. The US findings of healthy ankles from groups I and B were compared. Results A total of 154 subjects in group B (mean age, 24.5 ± 2.8 years; male/female, 84/70) and 40 subjects in group I (mean age, 24.4 ± 2.3 years; male/female, 26/14) were included in the study. There was no significant difference in the ADT between the groups. There were no significant differences in the non-stress ATFL length (19.4 ± 1.8 vs. 19.3 ± 1.9, p = 0.84), stress ATFL length (20.8 ± 1.8 vs. 20.9 ± 1.9, p = 0.66), length change (1.5 ± 0.6 vs. 1.6 ± 0.6, p = 0.12) and ATFL ratio (1.08 ± 0.03 vs. 1.08 ± 0.03, p = 0.13) between the groups. Conclusion No significant difference was detected between the contralateral healthy ankles of subjects with ipsilateral mechanical lateral ankle laxity and those of bilateral healthy controls.

Abstract
Objectives Foot and ankle injuries are commonly seen in dancers, yet limited studies exist on the injury prevalence of performers of Chinese classical dance. This study aims to determine and assess the prevalence of chronic ankle instability (CAI) in Chinese dancers and correlate the impact of CAI with foot function. Methods This is a cross-sectional study of 105 Chinese dancers. CAI was assessed using the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool and foot function via the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS). Both self-reported assessment tools were distributed online between January and February 2021. Subjects were divided into CAI and healthy groups to observe any correlations in demographics, training hours and foot function. Results CAI was seen in 28% of Chinese dancers, with most being unilateral instability. The number of training hours, level of expertise, occupation, gender and age showed no statistical significance with CAI. The FAOS showed that subjects with CAI had significantly greater pain and poorer quality of life. Discussion and conclusion CAI is a problem affecting 28% of performers of Chinese dance. Future research should investigate the ankle biomechanics in Chinese dance and specific risk factors for CAI to formulate strategies to prevent ankle injuries in Chinese dancers.

Abstract
Research questions 1) Do exercise-based rehabilitation programs reduce re-injury following acute ankle sprain?; 2) Is rehabilitation effectiveness moderated by the exercise’s therapeutic quality, content and volume? Methods This systematic review with meta-analysis (PROSPERO: CRD42020210858) included randomized controlled trials in which adults who sustained an acute ankle sprain received exercise-based rehabilitation as an intervention. Databases CINAHL, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PEDro and Google Scholar were searched for eligible articles (last search: March 2021). ROB II screening tool by Cochrane was used to assess risk of bias and the i-CONTENT tool was used to assess quality of interventions. Both qualitative analysis and quantitative data synthesis were performed. Results Fourteen randomized controlled trials comprising 2182 participants were included. Five studies were judged overall low risk of bias and i-CONTENT assessment showed poor to moderate therapeutic quality of exercise across all included articles. Pooled data found significant reductions in re-injury prevalence at 12 months, in favour of the exercise-based rehabilitation group vs usual care (OR: 0.60; 95%CI: 0.36 to 0.99). Pooled data for re-injury incidence showed not-significant results (MD: 0.027; 95%CI: -2.14 to 2.19). Meta-regression displayed no statistically significant association between training volume and odds of re-injury (r = -0.00086; SD: 0.00057; 95%CI: -0.00197 to 0.00025). Results from patient-reported outcomes and clinical outcomes were inconclusive at 1 month, 3–6 months and 7–12 months of follow up. Conclusion Exercise-based rehabilitation reduces the risk of recurrent ankle sprain compared to usual care, but there is insufficient data to determine the optimal content of exercise-based interventions. Training volume varied considerably across studies but did not affect the odds of sustaining a re-injury. Effects on patient-reported outcomes and clinical outcomes are equivocal. Future research should compare different exercise contents, training volumes and intensities after ankle sprain.

Abstract
Introduction. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether certain intrinsic factors (foot hyperpronation, generalized joint laxity) and clinical tests (anterior drawer and talar tilt tests, single-leg balance test and star excursion balance test, ankle and first metatarsophalangeal range of motion) could predict the incidence of lateral ankle sprains among elite football and basketball players during a full year. Method. In a prospective cohort study, 106 elite basketball and football players were recruited. During the preseason period, players underwent baseline measurements. Team physicians in following year reported occurrence of new ankle sprains. Results. Ankle sprain was more frequent among basketball players (P = .01). The history of recurrent (P = .001) and acute ankle sprain (P = .01) and each 5-year increase in age (P = .039) were predictive factors for ankle sprain. No evidence for relationship between other risk factors and occurrence of ankle sprain were achieved. Conclusion. In our study, the history of recurrent and acute ankle sprain was the strongest predictor for ankle injuries. Considering the limitations of this study, it seems mandatory to conduct more prospective studies with a larger sample size and longer follow-up period.Levels of Evidence: Level II: Prognostic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the evidence regarding the association between lateral ankle sprain (LAS) history and the subsequent LAS risk, as well as sex differences in the observed associations. DATA SOURCES PubMed, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus were searched through July 2020 for articles on LAS history and incidence during the study period. STUDY SELECTION Studies were included if they were prospective in nature and the authors reported the number of participants with and those without a history of LAS at study initiation as well as the number of participants in each group who sustained an LAS during the investigation. DATA EXTRACTION Data were study design parameters as well as the number of participants with and those without an LAS history and the number of subsequent LASs that occurred in both groups. Risk ratios (RRs) with 95% CIs compared the risk of LAS during the study period between those with and those without an LAS history for each investigation. DATA SYNTHESIS A total of 19 studies involving 6567 patients were included. The follow-up periods ranged from 14 weeks to 2 years. Assessment scores indicated the studies were of moderate to high quality. A significantly higher risk of LAS during the study period was observed among those with a history of LAS in 10 of 15 studies (RR range = 1.29-6.06). Similar associations were seen in 4 of 6 studies of all-male samples (RR range = 1.38-8.65) and 1 of 4 studies with an all-female sample (RR = 4.28). CONCLUSIONS Strong evidence indicates that a previous LAS increased the risk of a subsequent LAS injury. Men with a history of LAS appeared to be at a higher risk of sustaining a subsequent LAS, but women were not. However, further data are needed to draw definitive conclusions from the limited number of sex-specific studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Distal fibular mobilization with movement (MWM), with and without a posterior gliding fibular tape, and anteroposterior mobilization of the talus (MOB) are widely used to treat acute lateral ankle sprains. The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term and long-term relative effectiveness of these techniques. METHODS In this double-blind randomized controlled trial, 45 amateur soccer players with acute (<72 hours) lateral ankle sprain were randomly allocated to 6 sessions (3/wk within the first 2 weeks) of either MWM, MWM with tape (MWMtape), or MOB. All participants also received general advice, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, edema draining massage, and a program of proprioception exercises. Participant ratings of function on the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure and Patient Global Impression of Improvement Scale were the primary outcomes measured over 52 weeks. Secondary outcomes were ankle pain, pressure pain threshold, range of motion, volume, and strength. RESULTS MWM and MWMtape were equally effective and participants demonstrated greater function on the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure at 12 and 52 weeks when compared with those receiving MOB; however, the latter demonstrated superior function at 2 weeks. No differences between groups were observed for Patient Global Impression of Improvement Scale or any of the secondary outcomes. CONCLUSION There are limited differences in the short term among techniques, with the exception of better sport function with MOB. Over the longer term, the distal fibular MWM is most effective to achieve activities of daily living and sport function when added to usual physical therapy care. The addition of a posterior gliding fibular tape provides no additional benefit. IMPACT Distal fibular mobilization with movement may be the most appropriate choice of treatment for acute lateral ankle sprain to achieve long-term activities of daily living and sport function. In the short term, anteroposterior mobilization of the talus offers greater improvement in sport function. The use of fibular tape provides no added benefit as an adjunct to a treatment that includes distal fibular mobilization with movement.

Abstract
Background Chronic ankle instability, developing from ankle sprain, is one of the most common sports injuries. Besides it being an ankle issue, chronic ankle instability can also cause additional injuries. Investigating the epidemiology of chronic ankle instability is an essential step to develop an adequate injury prevention strategy. However, the epidemiology of chronic ankle instability remains unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of chronic ankle instability through valid and reliable self-reported tools in active populations. Methods An electronic search was performed on PubMed and Web of Science in July 2020. The inclusion criteria for articles were peer-reviewed, published between 2006 and 2020, using one of the valid and reliable tools to evaluate ankle instability, determining chronic ankle instability based on the criteria of the International Ankle Consortium, and including the outcome of epidemiology of chronic ankle instability. The risk of bias of the included studies was evaluated with an adapted tool for the sports injury review method. Results After removing duplicated studies, 593 articles were screened for eligibility. Twenty full-texts were screened and finally nine studies were included, assessing 3804 participants in total. The participants were between 15 and 32 years old and represented soldiers, students, athletes and active individuals with a history of ankle sprain. The prevalence of chronic ankle instability was 25%, ranging between 7 and 53%. The prevalence of chronic ankle instability within participants with a history of ankle sprains was 46%, ranging between 9 and 76%. Five included studies identified chronic ankle instability based on the standard criteria, and four studies applied adapted exclusion criteria to conduct the study. Five out of nine included studies showed a low risk of bias. Conclusions The prevalence of chronic ankle instability shows a wide range. This could be due to the different exclusion criteria, age, sports discipline, or other factors among the included studies. For future studies, standardized criteria to investigate the epidemiology of chronic ankle instability are required. The epidemiology of CAI should be prospective. Factors affecting the prevalence of chronic ankle instability should be investigated and clearly described.

Abstract
This revised clinical practice guideline (CPG) addresses the distinct but related lower extremity impairments of those with a first-time lateral ankle sprain (LAS) and those with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Depending on many factors, impairments may continue following injury. While most individuals experience resolution of symptoms, complaints of instability may continue and are defined as CAI. The aims of the revision were to provide a concise summary of the contemporary evidence since publication of the original guideline and to develop new recommendations or revise previously published recommendations to support evidence-based practice. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to identify prospectively the anatomical and functional intrinsic risk factors for lateral ankle sprain (LAS) in adolescent athletes participating in team sports. DESIGN A prospective cohort study. SETTING University research laboratory. PARTICIPANTS A total of 152 adolescent male athletes (age: 14.45 ± 2.96 years; height: 165.63 ± 15.33 cm; weight: 55.60 ± 16.56 kg; body mass index: 19.97 ± 3.58 kg/m2) participated in this study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The participants were assessed during the preseason for previous ankle sprain history, navicular drop, tibia vara, Q angle, tibia torsion, knee recurvatum, and ankle ROM. LASs were prospectively recorded and diagnosed for two consecutive seasons (20 months). RESULTS Previous ankle sprain history (odds ratio [OR] = 60.911, p < 0.001), increased navicular drop (OR = 1.767, p < 0.001), and knee recurvatum (OR = 1.881, p = 0.002) were positively associated with the incidence of LAS. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses revealed the predictive potentials of previous ankle sprain history (the area under the ROC [AUROC] = 0.706, p < 0.001), navicular drop (AUROC = 0.906, p < 0.001), and knee recurvatum (AUROC = 0.724, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Athletes with previous ankle sprain history, knee recurvatum, and especially navicular drop may have a greater risk of LAS injury. The data from this study can help therapists and trainers to identify people with a higher risk of LAS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this systematic review was to identify prospective studies that used a criteria-based return to sport (RTS) decision-making process for patients with lateral ankle sprain (LAS) injury. DESIGN Systematic review and narrative synthesis. DATA SOURCES The PubMed (MEDLINE), Web of Science, PEDro, Cochrane Library, SPORTDiscus (EBSCO), ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases were searched to 23 November 2018. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES Studies were included if they prospectively applied a criteria-based RTS decision-making process for patients with LAS injury, but were excluded if they merely gathered outcome measures at the RTS time point. Studies were also excluded if patients were recovering from ankle fracture, high ankle sprain, medial ankle sprain, chronic ankle instability or complex ankle injury. RESULTS No studies were identified that used a criteria-based RTS decision-making process for patients with LAS injury. We were unable to conduct a quantitative synthesis or meta-analysis, therefore we provide a narrative synthesis of relevant questionnaires, as well as clinical and functional assessments commonly used in studies retrieved in the search. CONCLUSION There are currently no published evidence-based criteria to inform RTS decisions for patients with an LAS injury. Based on our narrative synthesis, we propose a number of variables that could be used to develop a criteria-based RTS decision paradigm. Future research should aim to reach consensus on these variables and apply them to actual RTS decisions within prospective study designs. Furthermore, we suggest that complex systems theory and the RTS continuum could be used to inform the development of an RTS decision-making paradigm for athletes with LAS injury.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Lateral ankle sprains (LAS) are common in the general population and may lead to chronic ankle instability (CAI). If patients at risk could be identified, they could receive adequate and on-time treatment. OBJECTIVE The purpose of the current review was to identify all reported intrinsic factors associated with sustaining a LAS or progressing to CAI after an initial sprain. EVIDENCE REVIEW PubMed, Embase, MEDline, Cochrane and PEDro were searched for studies published until July 2019. Articles were selected if they included intrinsic factors related to LAS or CAI, subjects of at least 16 years old, and contained a minimum of 10 patients and 10 controls. Studies were excluded if they concerned reviews or case reports, included patients with previous surgical interventions, concomitant injuries or joint pathology other than ankle instability. Quality of included studies was assessed using the Quality in Prognostic Studies tool and quality of evidence was assessed using the GRADEpro tool. In case outcomes were described by at least three studies, data were pooled and assessed by performing a meta-analysis. Based on the pooled data, either a fixed-effects model or random-effects model was selected to correct for the degree of heterogeneity. FINDINGS The search resulted in a total of 4154 studies. After title and abstract screening and subsequent full-text screening, 80 relevant studies were included. Results of the meta-analyses indicated that, compared with healthy controls, patients with LAS had a higher mean body mass index (BMI). In patients with CAI, a higher weight and a longer time to stabilise after performing a task (eg, jumping) were found compared with healthy controls. Other outcomes could not be compared using a meta-analysis due to heterogeneity in outcome measurement and the great number of different outcomes reported. Identification of the risk factors when patients present themselves after a LAS may help to determine which patients are at risk of recurrent sprains or developing CAI. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Based on the findings in this review, a higher BMI, and a higher weight and neuromuscular stability deficits may be regarded risk factors for sustaining a LAS or developing CAI, respectively. Abstract
Lateral ankle sprains (LASs) are a common injury sustained by individuals who participate in recreational physical activities and sports. After an LAS, a large proportion of individuals develop long-term symptoms, which contribute to the development of chronic ankle instability (CAI). Due to the prevalence of LASs and the propensity to develop CAI, collective efforts toward reducing the risk of sustaining these injuries should be a priority of the sports medicine and sports physiotherapy communities. The comprehensive injury-causation model was developed to illustrate the interaction of internal and external risk factors in the occurrence of the inciting injury. The ability to mitigate injury risk is contingent on a comprehensive understanding of risk factors for injury. The objective of this current concepts review is to use the comprehensive injury-causation model as a framework to illustrate the risk factors for LAS and CAI based on the literature.
