Accumulation of phenolics and growth of dioecious Populus tremula (L.) seedlings over three growing seasons under elevated temperature and UVB radiation

Exploring gender-based diversity for phenolic and organic acid profiles in the genetic resource of betel vine (Piper betle L.) from India as revealed through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD)

Betel vine (Piper betle L.) is a dioecious plant and has paved way for researchers to explore the available genetic resources for the biochemical compounds. In the study, twenty sexually dimorphic genotypes of betel vine were characterized for bio-compounds using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD), and as a result identified phenolic compounds and organic acids, including caffeic acid, salicylic acid, t-ferulic acid, sinapic acid, p-coumaric acid, t-cinnamic acid, gallic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, gluconic acid, oxalic acid, lactic acid, tartaric acid, malonic acid, citric acid, and succinic acid. The phenolics and organic acids in the male genotypes were more than the female genotypes; this insight of phytochemicals variability could aid in the gender differences. However, the highest phenolic contents was found in the Kapoori Chintalapudi (68.77 mg/100 g), followed by Kapoori Bihar (67.03 mg/100 g) and Ghanegatte (63.31 mg/100 g) genotypes. The abundance of biomolecules was found in the order, namely gallic acid, sinapic acid, caffeic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid, and malonic acid in regardless of gender. The chemical profile of sexual dimorphs in betel vine and serve as a possible index for gender differentiation. The principal component analysis showed the hierarchical grouping of the genotypes based on the phenolic compounds and organic acids; thereby the divergent genotypes Kapoori Chintalapudi, Ghanaghette, Kapoori Bihar, and Sirugamani-1 were identified for phenolic acid richness. Similarly, CARI-6, Halisahar Sanchi, Kapoori Bihar, and Gangarampur Sanchi were identified for organic acids richness which can be promoted for commercial cultivation.

Effects of UV-B radiation on epiphytic bacterial communities on male and female Sargassum thunbergii

The effects of increased UV-B radiation on macroalgae have been widely studied, but knowledge concerning the response of communities of algal epiphytic bacteria to increased UV-B radiation and differences between male and female algae is still lacking. Via 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing technology, changes in the epiphytic bacterial communities on male and female S. thunbergii under increased UV-B radiation were studied in the lab. Under different UV-B radiation intensities, although the α diversity and community composition of epiphytic bacteria changed little, the β diversity indicated that the community structure of bacteria on S. thunbergii was obviously clustered, and the relative abundance of dominant bacteria and indicator species changed considerably. There were unique bacteria in each experimental group, and the bacteria whose abundance obviously changed were members of groups related to environmental resistance or adaptability. The variation in the abundance of epiphytic bacteria was different in male and female S. thunbergii, and the bacteria whose abundance greatly changed were mainly related to algal growth and metabolism. The abundance of genes with predicted functions related to metabolism, genetic information processing, environmental adaptation and infectious diseases changed with increased UV-B radiation, and those variations differed between epiphytic bacteria on male and female S. thunbergii. This study found that the algal epiphytic bacteria were influenced by the increase in UV-B radiation and underwent certain adaptations through adjustments to community structure and function, and this response was also affected by the sex of the macroalgae. These results are expected to serve as experimental basis and provide reference for further understanding of the response of algae epiphytic bacteria to enhanced UV-B radiation caused by the thinning of the ozone layer and the resulting changes in the relationship between algae and bacteria, which may change the community of the marine ecosystem and affect important marine ecological process.

Consequences of the Reproductive Effort of Dioecious Taxus baccata L. Females in a Generative Bud Removal Experiment-Important Role of Nitrogen in Female Reproduction

Dioecious species differ in the pattern and intensity of male and female reproductive investments. We aimed to determine whether female shoots deprived of generative buds show biochemical features, indicating their less-pronounced reproductive effort. For this purpose, the same branches of mature Taxus baccata females were deprived of generative organs. In the second and third years of the experiment, measurements were made in every season from the control and bud-removed shoots of females and control males. Bud removal caused an increase in nitrogen concentration almost to the level detected in the needles of male specimens, but only in current-year needles. Moreover, differences between male and control female shoots were present in the C:N ratio and increment biomass, but they disappeared when bud removal was applied to females. Additionally, between-sex differences were observed for content of phenolic compounds, carbon and starch, and SLA, independent of the female shoot reproductive effort. The study revealed that nitrogen uptake in seeds and arils may explain the lower nitrogen level and consequently the lower growth rate of females compared to males. At the same time, reproduction did not disturb carbon level in adjacent tissues, and two hypotheses explaining this phenomenon have been put forward.

Responses in growth and emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds in Scots pine, Norway spruce and silver birch seedlings to different warming treatments in a controlled field experiment

We investigated the responses in growth and emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) seedlings to a simulated climate warming of +2 °C (T2) and +4 °C (T4), compared to the ambient conditions, during two growing seasons (2019-2020) in a controlled field experiment in central Finland. In all seedlings, height was measured weekly. Diameter was measured continuously for one seedling from each tree species per plot. For shoot and root biomass measurements, half of the seedlings were harvested at end of the first growing season and the rest at the end of the second growing season. Foliage BVOC emission rates were measured at the end of the second growing season. Biomass, height, and diameter growth of silver birch did benefit the most from warming in both growing seasons. In the Scots pine and Norway spruce seedlings, height and diameter growth increased with increasing temperature in the second growing season, more so in Scots pine. Overall, the shoot and root biomass of conifer seedlings increased with increasing temperature. In the conifer seedlings, warming increased biomass and diameter growth more than height growth, due to their predetermined height growth pattern. The warming increased BVOC emissions more clearly in silver birch, whilst the BVOC emissions were in conifers less sensitive to temperature variation. Based on our findings, silver birch seedlings could be expected to benefit the most from warmer growing conditions and Norway spruce the least.
