Abstract
Background Patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) suffer from impaired physical activity and are prone to motor vehicle accidents (MVA), but definite instruction regarding the relationship between disease evolvement and MVA and potential risk factors is lacking. Objectives To explore the risk factors and their impact on recorded MVA with profound injuries in AS patients with prescriptions. Design Nationwide, population-based, matched retrospective cohort study. Methods Using Taiwanese administrative healthcare databases, with available claims data from 2003 to 2013, we selected 30,911 newly diagnosed adult AS patients with concurrent prescriptions from 2006 to 2012 as AS patients, along with 309,110 non-AS individuals as the control group, matched in gender, age at index date and year of the index date. The risk of recorded MVA with profound injuries was compared between the two groups in terms of incidence rate ratio (IRR) and log-rank test p-value. Using Cox regression analysis, we studied associations between the risk and AS diagnosis. Results The risk of recorded MVA with profound injuries in AS patients was significantly higher than in non-AS individuals, specifically 2 years after AS diagnosis (IRR, 2.00; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.42-2.81). For patients with follow-up periods >2 years, the adjusted risk was positively associated with suburban residence (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 2.18; 95% CI, 1.55-3.06), rural residence (aHR, 1.89; 95% CI, 1.27-2.80), lower insured income (aHR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.01-1.81) and recorded MVA with profound injuries before AS diagnosis (aHR, 6.16; 95% CI, 2.53-14.96). AS diagnosis (aHR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.27-2.59) and frequency of ambulatory visits (aHR, 1.01; 95% CI, 1.004--1.02) were specific associated factors for them compared with those with follow-up periods ⩽2 years. Conclusion For adult AS patients in Taiwan, factors such as AS disease evolution and frequent ambulatory visits for disease control in the second year of the disease course may significantly increase the risk of recorded MVA with profound injuries beyond 2 years after AS diagnosis.

Abstract
Human behavior is implicated in most road accidents. The current study examined drivers’ behavior that interferes with decision making and reaction time to an incidence. Adults (≥17 years-old) participated in a questionnaire-based survey for driver’s behavior. Dataset was weighed according to sex, age and education based on the 2011 census. Differences between groups were assessed with Chi-squared tests while logistic regression models were used to identify drivers’ characteristics for specific behaviors. A total 1601 adults participated in the survey—48% males and 52% females. Texting, Global Positioning System (GPS) setting and smoking were observed more by professional drivers and drivers of an urban area, while smoking was also dependent on social class. Drink driving was observed more by males (20% vs. 5% females), while after adjusting for age, the odds of drink driving in males were 5 times higher than females (p < 0.001). A different effect of age depending on the driver’s sex and vice versa was observed regarding phone calls. Drivers’ behavior with distractive potential differed by age, sex, social class and area of residence. Male drivers were more likely to perform drink driving, while professional drivers were more likely to use cell phone for calls and texting, set the GPS and smoke while driving.

Abstract
Introduction: Some studies show that truck drivers use tobacco and other stimulants to stay awake as they drive. Despite their increased risks for many of tobacco-related health disparities, there is limited engagement of truck drivers in smoking cessation programs. The objective of this study was to describe smoking characteristics and identify their preferred smoking cessation methods among truck drivers. Methods: This was a cross-sectional mixed methods study. Participants were truck drivers recruited at trucking companies in Utah in 2019. Participants were either individually interviewed (n = 4), or filled out a survey (n = 33). We conducted qualitative data analysis of the interviews followed by descriptive statistics of smoking and cessation characteristics from the survey. Results: Reasons for smoking included, staying awake, stress reduction, or something to do while driving. Of the drivers surveyed, 68.8% were daily smokers while 97% had smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their life time. The mean number of cigarettes per day (cpd) was 15.7, and 25 among those who had 10 or more cpd. Sixty-one percent had made at least a quit attempt. In addition to counseling or brief advice, 68% reported interest in using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) either as gum or patch to help them quit. 21% reported interest in telephone text messaging to engage them in treatment. Conclusion: Cigarette smoking is a public health problem among truck drivers. Our findings suggest that truck drivers are interested in quitting smoking. Evidence based interventions tailored to this population are needed to help them quit and reduce their smoking-related morbidity.
