Development of (43)Ca solid state NMR spectroscopy as a probe of local structure in inorganic and molecular materials

43Ca MAS-DNP NMR of Frozen Solutions for the Investigation of Calcium Ion Complexation

Calcium ion complexation in aqueous solutions is of paramount importance in biology as it is related to cell signaling, muscle contraction, or biomineralization. However, Ca2+-complexes are dynamic soluble entities challenging to describe at the molecular level. Nuclear magnetic resonance appears as a method of choice to probe Ca2+-complexes. However, 43Ca NMR exhibits severe limitations arising from the low natural abundance coupled to the low gyromagnetic ratio and the quadrupolar nature of 43Ca, which overall make it a very unreceptive nucleus. Here, we show that 43Ca dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) NMR of 43Ca-labeled frozen solutions is an efficient approach to enhance the NMR receptivity of 43Ca and to obtain structural insights about calcium ions complexed with representative ligands including water molecules, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and l-aspartic acid (l-Asp). In these conditions and in combination with numerical simulations and calculations, we show that 43Ca nuclei belonging to Ca2+ complexed to the investigated ligands exhibit rather low quadrupolar couplings (with CQ typically ranging from 0.6 to 1 MHz) due to high symmetrical environments and potential residual dynamics in vitrified solutions at a temperature of 100 K. As a consequence, when 1H→43Ca cross-polarization (CP) is used to observe 43Ca central transition, "high-power" νRF(43Ca) conditions, typically used to detect spin 1/2 nuclei, provide ∼120 times larger sensitivity than "low-power" conditions usually employed for detection of quadrupolar nuclei. These "high-power" CPMAS conditions allow two-dimensional (2D) 1H-43Ca HetCor spectra to be readily recorded, highlighting various Ca2+-ligand interactions in solution. This significant increase in 43Ca NMR sensitivity results from the combination of distinct advantages: (i) an efficient 1H-mediated polarization transfer from DNP, resembling the case of low-natural-abundance spin 1/2 nuclei, (ii) a reduced dynamics, allowing the use of CP as a sensitivity enhancement technique, and (iii) the presence of a relatively highly symmetrical Ca environment, which, combined to residual dynamics, leads to the averaging of the quadrupolar interaction and hence to efficient high-power CP conditions. Interestingly, these results indicate that the use of high-power CP conditions is an effective way of selecting symmetrical and/or dynamic 43Ca environments of calcium-containing frozen solution, capable of filtering out more rigid and/or anisotropic 43Ca sites characterized by larger quadrupolar constants. This approach could open the way to the atomic-level investigation of calcium environments in more complex, heterogeneous frozen solutions, such as those encountered at the early stages of calcium phosphate or calcium carbonate biomineralization events.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Metadynamics Simulations Reveal the Atomistic Binding of l-Serine and O-Phospho-l-Serine at Disordered Calcium Phosphate Surfaces of Biocements

Interactions between biomolecules and structurally disordered calcium phosphate (CaP) surfaces are crucial for the regulation of bone mineralization by noncollagenous proteins, the organization of complexes of casein and amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) in milk, as well as for structure-function relationships of hybrid organic/inorganic interfaces in biomaterials. By a combination of advanced solid-state NMR experiments and metadynamics simulations, we examine the detailed binding of O-phospho-l-serine (Pser) and l-serine (Ser) with ACP in bone-adhesive CaP cements, whose capacity of gluing fractured bone together stems from the close integration of the organic molecules with ACP over a subnanometer scale. The proximity of each carboxy, aliphatic, and amino group of Pser/Ser to the Ca²⁺ and phosphate species of ACP observed from the metadynamics-derived models agreed well with results from heteronuclear solid-state NMR experiments that are sensitive to the ¹³C-³¹P and ¹⁵N-³¹P distances. The inorganic/organic contacts in Pser-doped cements are also contrasted with experimental and modeled data on the Pser binding at nanocrystalline HA particles grown from a Pser-bearing aqueous solution. The molecular adsorption is driven mainly by electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged carboxy/phosphate groups and Ca²⁺ cations of ACP, along with H bonds to either protonated or nonprotonated inorganic phosphate groups. The Pser and Ser molecules anchor at their phosphate/amino and carboxy/amino moieties, respectively, leading to an extended molecular conformation across the surface, as opposed to an "upright standing" molecule that would result from the binding of one sole functional group.

A 43 Ca nuclear magnetic resonance perspective on octacalcium phosphate and its hybrid derivatives

⁴³ Ca nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been extensively applied to the detailed study of octacalcium phosphate (OCP), Ca₈ (HPO₄ )₂ (PO₄ )₄ .5H₂ O, and hybrid derivatives involving intercalated metabolic acids (viz., citrate, succinate, formate, and adipate). Such phases are of importance in the development of a better understanding of bone structure. High-resolution ⁴³ Ca magic angle spinning (MAS) experiments, including double-rotation (DOR) ⁴³ Ca NMR, as well as ⁴³ Ca{¹ H} rotational echo DOR (REDOR) and ³¹ P{⁴³ Ca} REAPDOR NMR spectra, were recorded on a ⁴³ Ca-labeled OCP phase at very high magnetic field (20 T), and complemented by ab initio calculations of NMR parameters using the Gauge-Including Projector Augmented Wave-density functional theory (GIPAW-DFT) method. This enabled a partial assignment of the eight inequivalent Ca²⁺ sites of OCP. Natural-abundance ⁴³ Ca MAS NMR spectra were then recorded for the hybrid organic-inorganic derivatives, revealing changes in the ⁴³ Ca lineshape. In the case of the citrate derivative, these could be interpreted on the basis of computational models of the structure. Overall, this study highlights the advantages of combining high-resolution ⁴³ Ca NMR experiments and computational modeling for studying complex hybrid biomaterials.

Recent progress in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance of half-integer spin low-γ quadrupolar nuclei applied to inorganic materials

An overview is presented of recent progress in the solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) observation of low-γ nuclei, with a focus on applications to inorganic materials. The technological and methodological advances in the last 20 years, which have underpinned the increased accessibility of low-γ nuclei for study by solid-state NMR techniques, are summarised, including improvements in hardware, pulse sequences and associated computational methods (e.g., first principles calculations and spectral simulation). Some of the key initial observations from inorganic materials of these nuclei are highlighted along with some recent (most within the last 10 years) illustrations of their application to such materials. A summary of other recent reviews of the study of low-γ nuclei by solid-state NMR is provided so that a comprehensive understanding of what has been achieved to date is available.

A novel multinuclear solid-state NMR approach for the characterization of kidney stones

The spectroscopic study of pathological calcifications (including kidney stones) is extremely rich and helps to improve the understanding of the physical and chemical processes associated with their formation. While Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging and optical/electron microscopies are routine techniques in hospitals, there has been a dearth of solid-state NMR studies introduced into this area of medical research, probably due to the scarcity of this analytical technique in hospital facilities. This work introduces effective multinuclear and multidimensional solid-state NMR methodologies to study the complex chemical and structural properties characterizing kidney stone composition. As a basis for comparison, three hydrates (n = 1 , 2 and 3) of calcium oxalate are examined along with nine representative kidney stones. The multinuclear magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR approach adopted investigates the 1 H , 13 C , 31 P and 31 P nuclei, with the 1 H and 13 C MAS NMR data able to be readily deconvoluted into the constituent elements associated with the different oxalates and organics present. For the first time, the full interpretation of highly resolved 1 H NMR spectra is presented for the three hydrates, based on the structure and local dynamics. The corresponding 31 P MAS NMR data indicates the presence of low-level inorganic phosphate species; however, the complexity of these data make the precise identification of the phases difficult to assign. This work provides physicians, urologists and nephrologists with additional avenues of spectroscopic investigation to interrogate this complex medical dilemma that requires real, multitechnique approaches to generate effective outcomes.

Solid State NMR Spectroscopy a Valuable Technique for Structural Insights of Advanced Thin Film Materials: A Review

Solid-state NMR has proven to be a versatile technique for studying the chemical structure, 3D structure and dynamics of all sorts of chemical compounds. In nanotechnology and particularly in thin films, the study of chemical modification, molecular packing, end chain motion, distance determination and solvent-matrix interactions is essential for controlling the final product properties and applications. Despite its atomic-level research capabilities and recent technical advancements, solid-state NMR is still lacking behind other spectroscopic techniques in the field of thin films due to the underestimation of NMR capabilities, availability, great variety of nuclei and pulse sequences, lack of sensitivity for quadrupole nuclei and time-consuming experiments. This article will comprehensively and critically review the work done by solid-state NMR on different types of thin films and the most advanced NMR strategies, which are beyond conventional, and the hardware design used to overcome the technical issues in thin-film research.

High-resolution 13 C and 43 Ca solid-state NMR and computational studies of the ethylene glycol solvate of atorvastatin calcium

We report ⁴³ Ca and ¹³ C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic studies of the ethylene glycol solvate of atorvastatin calcium. The ¹³ C and ⁴³ Ca chemical shift and ⁴³ Ca quadrupolar coupling tensor parameters are reported. The results are interpreted in terms of the reported X-ray diffraction crystal structure of the solvate and are compared with the NMR parameters of atorvastatin calcium trihydrate, the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Lipitor®. Hartree-Fock and density functional theory calculations of the NMR parameters based on a cluster model derived from the optimized X-ray diffraction crystal structure of the ethylene glycol solvate of atorvastatin calcium are in reasonable agreement with the experimental ⁴³ Ca and ¹³ C NMR measurables.

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization of Biomembrane Assemblies

While atomic scale structural and dynamic information are hallmarks of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methodologies, sensitivity is a fundamental limitation in NMR studies. Fully exploiting NMR capabilities to study membrane proteins is further hampered by their dilution within biological membranes. Recent developments in dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), which can transfer the relatively high polarization of unpaired electrons to nuclear spins, show promise for overcoming the sensitivity bottleneck and enabling NMR characterization of membrane proteins under native-like conditions. Here we discuss fundamental aspects of DNP-enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy, experimental details relevant to the study of lipid assemblies and incorporated proteins, and sensitivity gains which can be realized in biomembrane-based samples. We also present unique insights which can be gained from DNP measurements and prospects for further development of the technique for elucidating structures and orientations of membrane proteins in native lipid environments.

Recent directions in the solid-state NMR study of synthetic and natural calcium phosphates

Materials containing a calcium phosphate component have been the subject of much interest to NMR spectroscopists, especially in view of understanding the structure and properties of mineralized tissues like bone and teeth, and of developing synthetic biomaterials for bone regeneration. Here, we present a selection of recent developments in their structural characterization using advanced solid state NMR experiments, highlighting the level of insight which can now be accessed.

Calcium Valence-to-Core X-ray Emission Spectroscopy: A Sensitive Probe of Oxo Protonation in Structural Models of the Oxygen-Evolving Complex

Calcium is an abundant, nontoxic metal that finds many roles in synthetic and biological systems including the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II. Characterization methods for calcium centers, however, are underdeveloped compared to those available for transition metals. Valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy (VtC XES) selectively probes the electronic structure of an element's chemical environment, providing insight that complements the geometric information available from other techniques. Here, the utility of calcium VtC XES is established using an in-house dispersive spectrometer in combination with density functional theory. Spectral trends are rationalized within a molecular orbital framework, and Kβ2,5 transitions, derived from molecular orbitals with primarily ligand p character, are found to be a promising probe of the calcium coordination environment. In particular, it is shown that calcium VtC XES is sensitive to the electronic structure changes that accompany oxo protonation in Mn3CaO4-based molecular mimics of the OEC. Through correlation to calculations, the potential of calcium VtC XES to address unresolved questions regarding the mechanism of biological water oxidation is highlighted.

A new NMR crystallographic approach to reveal the calcium local structure of atorvastatin calcium

We combine experimental and computational determination of ⁴³Ca solid-state NMR parameters (chemical shift tensors, quadrupolar coupling tensors, and Euler angles) to constrain the structure of the local calcium–ligand coordination environment.

Recent advances in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of exotic nuclei

We present a review of recent advances in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) studies of exotic nuclei. Exotic nuclei may be spin-1/2 or quadrupolar, and typically have low gyromagnetic ratios, low natural abundances, large quadrupole moments (when I > 1/2), or some combination of these properties, generally resulting in low receptivities and/or prohibitively broad line widths. Some nuclides are little studied for other reasons, also rendering them somewhat exotic. We first discuss some of the recent progress in pulse sequences and hardware development which continues to enable researchers to study new kinds of materials as well as previously unfeasible nuclei. This is followed by a survey of applications to a wide range of exotic nuclei (including e.g., ⁹Be, ²⁵Mg, ³³S, ³⁹K, ⁴³Ca, ^47/49Ti, ⁵³Cr, ⁵⁹Co, ⁶¹Ni, ⁶⁷Zn, ⁷³Ge, ⁷⁵As, ⁸⁷Sr, ¹¹⁵In, ¹¹⁹Sn, ^121/123Sb, ^135/137Ba, ^185/187Re, ²⁰⁹Bi), most of them quadrupolar. The scope of the review is the past ten years, i.e., 2007-2017.

Biomineralization-Inspired Material Design for Bone Regeneration

Synthetic substitutes of bone grafts, such as calcium phosphate-based ceramics, have shown some good clinical successes in the regeneration of large bone defects and are currently extensively used. In the past decade, the field of biomineralization has delivered important new fundamental knowledge and techniques to better understand this fascinating phenomenon. This knowledge is also applied in the field of biomaterials, with the aim of bringing the composition and structure, and hence the performance, of synthetic bone graft substitutes even closer to those of the extracellular matrix of bone. The purpose of this progress report is to critically review advances in mimicking the extracellular matrix of bone as a strategy for development of new materials for bone regeneration. Lab-made biomimicking or bioinspired materials are discussed against the background of the natural extracellular matrix, starting from basic organic and inorganic components, and progressing into the building block of bone, the mineralized collagen fibril, and finally larger, 2D and 3D constructs. Moreover, bioactivity studies on state-of-the-art biomimicking materials are discussed. By addressing these different topics, an overview is given of how far the field has advanced toward a true bone-mimicking material, and some suggestions are offered for bridging current knowledge and technical gaps.

Loading across the Periodic Table: Introducing 14 Different Metal Ions To Enhance Metal-Organic Framework Performance

Loading metal guests within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) via secondary functional groups is a promising route for introducing or enhancing MOF performance in various applications. In this work, 14 metal ions (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Ba²⁺, Zn²⁺, Co²⁺, Mn²⁺, Ag⁺, Cd²⁺, La³⁺, In³⁺, and Pb²⁺) have been successfully introduced within the MIL-121 MOF using a cost-efficient route involving free carboxylic groups on the linker. The local and long-range structure of the metal-loaded MOFs is characterized using multinuclear solid-state NMR and X-ray diffraction methods. Li/Mg/Ca-loaded MIL-121 and Ag nanoparticle-loaded MIL-121 exhibit enhanced H₂ and CO₂ adsorption; Ag nanoparticle-loaded MIL-121 also demonstrates remarkable catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol.

Pushing the limits of sensitivity and resolution for natural abundance 43Ca NMR using ultra-high magnetic field (35.2 T)

Natural abundance 43Ca solid state NMR experiments are reported for the first time at ultra-high magnetic field (35.2 T) on a series of Ca-(pyro)phosphate and Ca-oxalate materials, which are of biological relevance in relation to biomineralization processes and the formation of pathological calcifications. The significant gain in both sensitivity and resolution at 35.2 T leads to unprecedented insight into the structure of both crystalline and amorphous phases.

Probing Calcium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks via Natural Abundance 43 Ca Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Calcium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are of high importance due to their low cost and bio-compatible metal centers. Understanding the local environment of calcium in these materials is critical for unraveling the origins of specific MOF properties. ⁴³ Ca solid-state NMR spectroscopy is one of the very few techniques that can directly characterize calcium metal centers, however, the ⁴³ Ca nucleus is a very challenging target for solid-state NMR spectroscopy due to its extremely low natural abundance and resonant frequency. In this work, natural abundance ⁴³ Ca solid-state NMR spectroscopy, at a high magnetic field of 21.1 T, has been employed to characterize several calcium-based MOFs. We demonstrate that ⁴³ Ca NMR spectra and quantum chemical calculations can probe the local structure of calcium metal centers within MOFs, investigate the presence of guests, and monitor phase changes.

NMR Spectroscopy in Glass Science: A Review of the Elements

The study of inorganic glass structure is critically important for basic glass science and especially the commercial development of glasses for a variety of technological uses. One of the best means by which to achieve this understanding is through application of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, which has a long and interesting history. This technique is element specific, but highly complex, and thus, one of the many inquiries made by non-NMR specialists working in glass science is what type of information and which elements can be studied by this method. This review presents a summary of the different elements that are amenable to the study of glasses by NMR spectroscopy and provides examples of the type of atomic level structural information that can be achieved. It serves to inform the non-specialist working in glass science and technology about some of the benefits and challenges involved in the study of inorganic glass structure using modern, readily-available NMR methods.

Solid-state NMR and computational insights into the crystal structure of silicocarnotite-based bioceramic materials synthesized mechanochemically

In this work, we report the results of a detailed structural study of a promising bioceramic material silicocarnotite Ca₅(PO₄)₂SiO₄ (SC) synthesized from mechanochemically treated nanosized silicon-substituted hydroxyapatite by annealing at 1000°C. This novel synthetic approach represents an attractive and efficient route towards large-scale manufacturing of the silicocarnotite-based bioceramics. A combination of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), powder X-ray crystallography and density function theory (DFT) calculations has been implemented to characterize the phase composition of the prepared composite materials and to gain insight into the crystal structure of silicocarnotite. The phase composition analysis based on the multinuclear solid-state NMR has been found in agreement with X-ray powder diffraction indicating the minority phases of CaO (5-6wt%) and residual silicon-apatite (7-8wt%), while the rest of the material being a fairly crystalline silicocarnotite phase (86-88wt%). A combination of computational (CASTEP) and experimental methods was used to address the anionic site disorder in the silicocarnotite crystal structure. Distorted [OPO₃] pyramids have appeared as an important structural motif in the SC crystal structure. The ratio between regular [PO₄] and distorted [OPO₃] tetrahedra is found between 2:1 and 3:1 based on XRD experiments and CASTEP calculations. The natural abundance ⁴³Ca magic angle spinning NMR spectra of silicocarnotite are reported for the first time.

Insight into the local environment of magnesium and calcium in low-coordination-number organo-complexes using 25Mg and 43Ca solid-state NMR: a DFT study

With the increasing number of organocalcium and organomagnesium complexes under development, there is a real need to be able to characterize in detail their local environment in order to fully rationalize their reactivity. For crystalline structures, in cases when diffraction techniques are insufficient, additional local spectroscopies like ²⁵Mg and ⁴³Ca solid-state NMR may provide valuable information to help fully establish the local environment of the metal ions. In this current work, a prospective DFT investigation on crystalline magnesium and calcium complexes involving low-coordination numbers and N-bearing organic ligands was carried out, in which the ²⁵Mg and ⁴³Ca NMR parameters [isotropic chemical shift, chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) and quadrupolar parameters] were calculated for each structure. The analysis of the calculated parameters in relation to the local environment of the metal ions revealed that they are highly sensitive to very small changes in geometry/distances, and hence that they could be used to assist in the refinement of crystal structures. Moreover, such calculations provide a guideline as to how the NMR measurements will need to be performed, revealing that these will be very challenging.

Interfacial Ca2+ environments in nanocrystalline apatites revealed by dynamic nuclear polarization enhanced 43Ca NMR spectroscopy

The interfaces within bones, teeth and other hybrid biomaterials are of paramount importance but remain particularly difficult to characterize at the molecular level because both sensitive and selective techniques are mandatory. Here, it is demonstrated that unprecedented insights into calcium environments, for example the differentiation of surface and core species of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles, can be obtained using solid-state NMR, when combined with dynamic nuclear polarization. Although calcium represents an ideal NMR target here (and de facto for a large variety of calcium-derived materials), its stable NMR-active isotope, calcium-43, is a highly unreceptive probe. Using the sensitivity gains from dynamic nuclear polarization, not only could calcium-43 NMR spectra be obtained easily, but natural isotopic abundance 2D correlation experiments could be recorded for calcium-43 in short experimental time. This opens perspectives for the detailed study of interfaces in nanostructured materials of the highest biological interest as well as calcium-based nanosystems in general.

From crystalline to amorphous calcium pyrophosphates: A solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance perspective

Hydrated calcium pyrophosphates (CPP, Ca2P2O7·nH2O) are a fundamental family of materials among osteoarticular pathologic calcifications. In this contribution, a comprehensive multinuclear NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) study of four crystalline and two amorphous phases of this family is presented. (1)H, (31)P and (43)Ca MAS (Magic Angle Spinning) NMR spectra were recorded, leading to informative fingerprints characterizing each compound. In particular, different (1)H and (43)Ca solid state NMR signatures were observed for the amorphous phases, depending on the synthetic procedure used. The NMR parameters of the crystalline phases were determined using the GIPAW (Gauge Including Projected Augmented Wave) DFT approach, based on first-principles calculations. In some cases, relaxed structures were found to improve the agreement between experimental and calculated values, demonstrating the importance of proton positions and pyrophosphate local geometry in this particular NMR crystallography approach. Such calculations serve as a basis for the future ab initio modeling of the amorphous CPP phases.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The general concept of NMR crystallography is applied to the detailed study of calcium pyrophosphates (CPP), whether hydrated or not, and whether crystalline or amorphous. CPP are a fundamental family of materials among osteoarticular pathologic calcifications. Their prevalence increases with age, impacting on 17.5% of the population after the age of 80. They are frequently involved or associated with acute articular arthritis such as pseudogout. Current treatments are mainly directed at relieving the symptoms of joint inflammation but not at inhibiting CPP formation nor at dissolving these crystals. The combination of advanced NMR techniques, modeling and DFT based calculation of NMR parameters allows new original insights in the detailed structural description of this important class of biomaterials.

High sensitivity and resolution in 43Ca solid-state NMR experiments

A thorough investigation of solid-state NMR signal enhancement schemes and high-resolution techniques for application to the spin-7/2 43Ca nuclide are presented. Signal enhancement experiments employing double frequency sweeps, hyperbolic secant pulses, and rotor-assisted population transfer, which manipulate the satellite transitions of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei to polarize the central transition (m = + 1/2 ↔ –1/2), are carried out on four well-characterized 43Ca isotopically enriched calcium salts: Ca(NO3)2, Ca(OD)2, CaSO4·2H2O, and Ca(OAc)2·H2O. These results, in conjunction with numerical simulations of 43Ca NMR spectra under magic-angle spinning conditions, are used to identify the technique that provides the most uniform (or quantitative) polarization enhancement as well as the largest signal enhancement factors independent of size of the 43Ca quadrupolar coupling constant, which is the most significant source of resonance broadening in 43Ca NMR spectra. These samples are further investigated using 43Ca double-rotation NMR spectroscopy to yield isotropic, or solution-like, NMR spectra with exquisite resolution. In addition, three unique calcium sites are resolved for the hemihydrated form of calcium acetate (unknown structure), Ca(OAc)2·0.5H2O, with double-rotation NMR, whereas the more common, but more time-consuming, multiple quantum magic-angle spinning technique only clearly resolves two calcium sites. The results shown herein will be useful for other NMR spectroscopists attempting to acquire 43Ca solid-state NMR data for unknown and more complex materials with a higher degree of both sensitivity and resolution.

Calcium environment in silicate and aluminosilicate glasses probed by ⁴³Ca MQMAS NMR experiments and MD-GIPAW calculations

⁴³Ca MQMAS NMR spectra of three silica-based glasses in which Ca²⁺ ions play different structural roles have been collected and processed in order to extract the underlying NMR parameter distributions. The NMR parameters have been interpreted with the help of molecular dynamics simulations and DFT-GIPAW calculations. This synergetic experimental-computational approach has allowed us to investigate the Ca environment, to estimate Ca coordination numbers from MD-derived models, and to push further the discussion about ⁴³Ca NMR sensitivity to the first and second coordination spheres: ⁴³Ca δiso and Ca-O distance can be successfully correlated as a function of Ca coordination number.

Solid-state (185/187)Re NMR and GIPAW DFT study of perrhenates and Re2(CO)10: chemical shift anisotropy, NMR crystallography, and a metal-metal bond

Advances in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) methods, such as dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), intricate pulse sequences, and increased applied magnetic fields, allow for the study of systems which even very recently would be impractical. However, SSNMR methods using certain quadrupolar probe nuclei (i.e., I > 1/2), such as (185/187)Re remain far from fully developed due to the exceedingly strong interaction between the quadrupole moment of these nuclei and local electric field gradients (EFGs). We present a detailed high-field (B0 = 21.1 T) experimental SSNMR study on several perrhenates (KReO4, AgReO4, Ca(ReO4)2·2H2O), as well as ReO3 and Re2(CO)10. We propose solid ReO3 as a new rhenium SSNMR chemical shift standard due to its reproducible and sharp (185/187)Re NMR resonances. We show that for KReO4, previously poorly understood high-order quadrupole-induced effects (HOQIE) on the satellite transitions can be used to measure the EFG tensor asymmetry (i.e., ηQ) to nearly an order-of-magnitude greater precision than competing SSNMR and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) approaches. Samples of AgReO4 and Ca(ReO4)2·2H2O enable us to comment on the effects of counter-ions and hydration upon Re(vii) chemical shifts. Calcium-43 and (185/187)Re NMR tensor parameters allow us to conclude that two proposed crystal structures for Ca(ReO4)2·2H2O, which would be considered as distinct, are in fact the same structure. Study of Re2(CO)10 provides insights into the effects of Re-Re bonding on the rhenium NMR tensor parameters and rhenium oxidation state on the Re chemical shift value. As overtone NQR experiments allowed us to precisely measure the (185/187)Re EFG tensor of Re2(CO)10, we were able to measure rhenium chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) for the first time in a powdered sample. Experimental observations are supported by gauge-including projector augmented-wave (GIPAW) density functional theory (DFT) calculations, with NMR tensor calculations also provided for NH4ReO4, NaReO4 and RbReO4. These calculations are able to reproduce many of the experimental trends in rhenium δiso values and EFG tensor magnitudes. Using KReO4 as a prototypical perrhenate-containing system, we establish a correlation between the tetrahedral shear strain parameter (|ψ|) and the nuclear electric quadrupolar coupling constant (CQ), which enables the refinement of the structure of ND4ReO4. Shortcomings in traditional DFT approaches, even when including relativistic effects via the zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA), for calculating rhenium NMR tensor parameters are identified for Re2(CO)10.

On the crystal structure of the vaterite polymorph of CaCO3: a calcium-43 solid-state NMR and computational assessment

The vaterite polymorph of CaCO3 has puzzled crystallographers for decades in part due to difficulties in obtaining single crystals. The multiple proposed structures for the vaterite polymorph of CaCO3 are assessed using a combined (43)Ca solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectroscopic and computational approach. A combination of improved experimental and computational methods, along with a calibrated chemical shift scale and (43)Ca nuclear quadrupole moment, allow for improved insights relative to our earlier work (Bryce et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 9282). Here, we synthesize a (43)Ca isotopically-enriched sample of vaterite and perform high-resolution quadrupolar SSNMR experiments including magic-angle spinning (MAS), double-rotation (DOR), and multiple-quantum (MQ) MAS experiments at magnetic field strengths of 9.4 and 21.1T. We identify one crystallographically unique Ca(2+) site in vaterite with a slight distribution in both chemical shifts and quadrupolar parameters. Both the experimental (43)Ca electric field gradient tensor and the isotropic chemical shift for vaterite are compared to those calculated with the gauge-including projector-augmented-wave (GIPAW) DFT method in an attempt to identify the model that best represents the crystal structure of vaterite. Simulations of (43)Ca DOR and MAS NMR spectra based on the NMR parameters computed for a total of 18 structural models for vaterite allow us to distinguish between these models. Among these 18, the P3221 and C2 structures provide simulated spectra and diffractograms in best agreement with all experimental data.

A multinuclear solid state NMR spectroscopic study of the structural evolution of disordered calcium silicate sol–gel biomaterials

Multinuclear solid state NMR, especially ¹⁷O, shows the structural evolution of calcium silicate sol–gel bioactive glasses during stabilisation and subsequent reaction with simulated body fluid.

NMR characterization of hydrocarbon adsorption on calcite surfaces: a first principles study

The electronic and coordination environment of minerals surfaces, as calcite, are very difficult to characterize experimentally. This is mainly due to the fact that there are relatively few spectroscopic techniques able to detect Ca(2+). Since calcite is a major constituent of sedimentary rocks in oil reservoir, a more detailed characterization of the interaction between hydrocarbon molecules and mineral surfaces is highly desirable. Here we perform a first principles study on the adsorption of hydrocarbon molecules on calcite surface (CaCO3 (101¯4)). The simulations were based on Density Functional Theory with Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (SS-NMR) calculations. The Gauge-Including Projector Augmented Wave method was used to compute mainly SS-NMR parameters for (43)Ca, (13)C, and (17)O in calcite surface. It was possible to assign the peaks in the theoretical NMR spectra for all structures studied. Besides showing different chemical shifts for atoms located on different environments (bulk and surface) for calcite, the results also display changes on the chemical shift, mainly for Ca sites, when the hydrocarbon molecules are present. Even though the interaction of the benzene molecule with the calcite surface is weak, there is a clearly distinguishable displacement of the signal of the Ca sites over which the hydrocarbon molecule is located. A similar effect is also observed for hexane adsorption. Through NMR spectroscopy, we show that aromatic and alkane hydrocarbon molecules adsorbed on carbonate surfaces can be differentiated.

New methods and applications in solid-state NMR spectroscopy of quadrupolar nuclei

Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has long been established as offering unique atomic-scale and element-specific insight into the structure, disorder, and dynamics of materials. NMR spectra of quadrupolar nuclei (I > (1)/2) are often perceived as being challenging to acquire and to interpret because of the presence of anisotropic broadening arising from the interaction of the electric field gradient and the nuclear electric quadrupole moment, which broadens the spectral lines, often over several megahertz. Despite the vast amount of information contained in the spectral line shapes, the problems with sensitivity and resolution have, until very recently, limited the application of NMR spectroscopy of quadrupolar nuclei in the solid state. In this Perspective, we provide a brief overview of the quadrupolar interaction, describe some of the basic experimental approaches used for acquiring high-resolution NMR spectra, and discuss the information that these spectra can provide. We then describe some interesting recent examples to showcase some of the more exciting and challenging new applications of NMR spectra of quadrupolar nuclei in the fields of energy materials, microporous materials, Earth sciences, and biomaterials. Finally, we consider the possible directions that this highly informative technique may take in the future.
