Abstract
Recently, alcohol-based draw solute (DS), i.e., alcohol with water, is one of the trending research topics in forward osmosis (FO) because of its performance and ease of regeneration. Nevertheless, the higher reverse solute flux (RSF) of the alcohol-based DS hinders its commercialization in water and wastewater treatment applications. This research aims to minimize the RSF of the alcohol-based DS in FO by investigating the possibility of using alcohol-alcohol-based draw solutes for the first time. Three alcohol-alcohol-based draw solutions, namely, (1) E70 + IPA30 (ethanol: 70% + isopropanol: 30%), (2) E40 + IPA60 (ethanol: 40% + isopropanol: 60%), and (3) E10 + IPA90 (ethanol: 10% + isopropanol: 90%), were prepared and the properties (including osmolality, shear stress, and viscosity) of the DS were first investigated followed by the parametric investigation (concerning temperature and concentration). The results were further analyzed with the fixed-point iterative method in MATLAB to obtain the performance parameters. Results reveal that the E10 + IPA90 mixture yields a lower RSF of 40.62 g/m2/h and specific reverse solute flux of 3.78 g/L with a considerably good water flux and recovery percentage of 11.47 LMH and 26.29%, respectively, as compared to other DS E70 + IPA30 and E40 + IPA60 at 25 °C. Thus, E10 + IPA90 is recommended as a potential candidate to be used as a DS in FO.

Abstract
The adsorption applications of MXene-based adsorbents have intensively investigated recently. However, the performance of MXene-based adsorbents has been largely limited owing to their lack of functional groups and adsorptive sites. Therefore, surface functionalization of MXene is an important route to achieve better performance for environmental adsorption. Herein, polyionic liquid functionalized MXene (named as MXene-PIL) was prepared through a multi-component reaction and adsorptive removal of iodine by MXene-PIL was also evaluated. The successful generation of PIL on MXene was confirmed by a series of characterization measurements. Furthermore, the effects of contact time, iodine concentration, environmental temperature and other factors on the adsorption performance of MXene-PIL were investigated. Adsorption kinetic analysis including pseudo-first-order dynamic model, pseudo-second-order dynamic model and Weber-Morris model, adsorption thermodynamic analysis such as Langmuir and Freundlich models and Van't Hoff equation were used for further analysis the adsorption behavior of iodine by MXene-PIL. We demonstrated that the adsorption capacity could be as high as about 170 mg/g, which is obviously larger than the unmodified MXene and most of other reported adsorbents. Taken together, a simple strategy has been developed for in-situ generation of PIL on MXene and the resultant composites show potential application for adsorptive removal of iodine.

Abstract
In this study, a new composite of activated carbon cloth/graphene oxide (ACC/GO) was prepared, characterized and used as electrode material for the electro-assisted adsorptive removal of Co2+ and Cs+ from aqueous solution. The ACC/GO composite was synthesized by a vacuum filtration method, and characterized by cyclic voltammetry and various surface characterization methods. Effect of applied voltage and initial concentration of Co2+ and Cs+ on their removal efficiency was examined. The kinetics and isotherms of Co2+ and Cs+ adsorption were investigated to explain the adsorption mechanism. At 0 V, the removal efficiency of Co2+ and Cs+ was 10.1% and 21.4%; at 1.2 V, electro-assistance increased the removal efficiency of Co2+ and Cs+ to 40.8% and 39.7%, respectively. Moreover, ACC/GO composite electrode had higher adsorption capacity compared to the pristine ACC electrode, due to its higher specific surface area and more oxygen-containing functional groups. The maximum adsorption capacity of Co2+ and Cs+ was 16.7 mg g-1 and 22.9 mg g-1, respectively at 1.2 V and 20 mg L-1 by ACC/GO composite electrode. The modeling and experimental results demonstrated that the removal mechanism involved in physical adsorption, chemical adsorption, and electro-adsorption. Overall, the prepared ACC/GO composite electrode had high capacitive deionization performance in removing heavy metal ions from wastewater.

Abstract
Boric acid is one of the most mobile inorganic contaminant species in nature due to its pKa of 9.23. Co-precipitation of borate with hydroxyapatite (HAp: Ca5(PO4)3OH) facilitates the simultaneous removal of borate with co-existing oxoanions in natural waters. The cost of phosphate is an impediment to industrialize the co-precipitation of borate with HAp for treatment of geothermal waters. In the present work, an inexpensive industrial by-product of magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) derived from sewage sludge, was examined as a phosphate source. MAP includes 89% pure magnesium ammonium phosphate, resulting in better performance than the pure chemical form of NH4H2PO4, because Mg2+ and Al3+ (trace elements in MAP product) play roles in enhancing the removal rate of borate and lowering the equilibrium borate concentration. These ions have a good affinity with phosphate to nucleate crystal seeds independently of powdery Ca sources. To reduce the bulky volume of solid residues, hot isostatic pressing (HIP) was applied. There is structural water in HAp; therefore, the greatest volume reduction was achieved with 78.3 ± 2.0% (n = 3). Additionally, a synergic effect to suppress the released borate, greater than the sequential combination of calcination and cold isostatic pressing was accomplished in the toxicity contents leaching procedure (TCLP) test. This is not due to larger crystal sizes alone, but it is derived from boron stabilization in HAp at an atomic level by the synergic effect of heating and pressing simultaneously.

Abstract
Direct membrane filtration has shown great potential in wastewater treatment and resource recovery in terms of its superior treated water quality, efficient nutrient recovery, and sustainable operation, especially under some scenarios where biological treatment is not feasible. This paper aims to give a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art of direct membrane filtration processes (including pressure-driven, osmotic-driven, thermal-driven, and electrical-driven) in treating different types of wastewater for water reclamation and resource recovery. The factors influencing membrane performance and treatment efficiency in these direct membrane filtration processes are well illustrated, in which membrane fouling was identified as the main challenge. The strategies for improving direct membrane filtration performance, such as physical and chemical cleaning techniques and pretreatment of feed water, are highlighted. Towards scaling-up and long-term operation of direct membrane filtration for effective wastewater reclamation and resource recovery, the challenges are emphasized and the prospects are discussed.

Abstract
The removal of Co, Sr and Cs ions form simulated radioactive wastewater using forward osmosis (FO) process was investigated. The effect of various factors on nuclide transport was examined, including membrane orientation, NaCl concentration, flow velocity, and the main factors were identified by correlation analysis. The mechanisms of nuclides transfer through membrane were explored. The results indicated that the active layer facing draw solution (AL-DS) had higher nuclide flux than AL-FS. At AL-FS mode, the highest flux of Co, Sr and Cs were only 1.54, 10.22 and 15.63 mg m-2 h-1 respectively by cellulose triacetate with embedded polyester screen support (CTA-ES) membrane. At AL-DS mode, the flux of Co and Cs increased when NaCl concentration and flow velocity increased. Convection, diffusion and electrostatic interactions were found to influence the nuclide transport all together. The Pearson correlation and partial correlation analysis identified that the diffusion coefficient of nuclides and reverse NaCl flux were the most important factors affecting nuclide flux through cellulose triacetate membrane. The water flux, NaCl concentration, flow velocity and partition coefficient were not the main affecting factors for nuclide flux.
