Abstract
The few-layer graphene, produced by exfoliation of graphite in 4-methylanisole, was noncovalently functionalized with the Ni(ii) complex of 5,7,12,14-tetramethyldibenzo-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-3,5,7,10,12,14-hexaene (Ni(ii)-tetramethyldibenzotetraaza[14]annulene, or NiTMTAA), which is a simple model of more complex porphyrins and phthalocyanines. The resulting hybrid materials with different content of NiTMTAA were characterized by means of thermogravimetric analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM, respectively), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy dispersive X-ray, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), Raman and UV-visible spectroscopy, as well as fluorescence and conductivity measurements. Additional information on the mechanisms of NiTMTAA interaction with graphene was obtained from density functional theory (DFT) and molecular mechanics (MM) calculations. Both experimental and theoretical results suggest that NiTMTAA forms a full double-sided adsorption layer on the graphene surface. The presence of NiTMTAA molecules in the hybrid materials obtained manifests itself in the appearance of characteristic bands in all types of electromagnetic spectra recorded; in FTIR, they are relatively weak as compared to graphene absorption bands, but dominate in Raman spectra. The morphology of the nanohybrids observed by SEM, TEM and AFM, as well as their electrical conductivity, depends on the NiTMTAA content. According to the results of DFT calculations of NiTMTAA adsorption on different graphene models, flat orientation of the complex with respect to graphene is energetically preferable, with a little difference depending on whether benzo or methyl groups contact the sheet.

Abstract
The reaction of K2[PdCl4] and PdCl2 with 5-methyl-5-(4-pyridyl)-2,4-imidazolidenedione (L) proceeded with the formation of two different Pd complexes, PdL2Cl2 (1) and PdL2Cl4 (2c), corresponded to a substitution reaction and a substitution reaction along with unanticipated oxidation, respectively. The nature of the oxidizing agent is unknown. These compounds have been studied by elemental analysis, IR, (1)H and (13)CNMR, molar conductivity, and cyclic voltammetry. In addition, structural optimization by DFT calculations and simulation of NMR spectra have been performed and compared with the experimental data. NBO analysis, HOMO and LUMO, have been used to elucidate the information regarding charge transfer within the molecules. Theoretical studies confirmed that in 1 and 2c the trans structures are about 41 and 33 kJ mol(-1) more stable than cis ones. Antibacterial activity and in vitro cytotoxicity of these compounds, as respectively assessed in six bacterial strains and two human tumor cell lines, have been investigated. Results showed the title complexes have the capacity of inhibiting the metabolic growth of bacteria and tumor cells to different extents.

Abstract
A Tetraaza Macrocylic Ligand (H2L) and its complexes, [Cd(H2L)(OH2)2](NO3)(2)·1/2OH2 (I), [Co(H2L)(OH2)](NO3)(2)·1/2OH2 (II), [Cu(H2L)(NO3)2]·3/2OH2 (III) and [Ni(H2L)(NO3)(OH2)]NO3·OH2 (IV), have been synthesized and characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, molar conductivity, 1H NMR, UV-vis, FT-IR and mass spectroscopy. All results confirm that the prepared compounds have 1:1 metal-to-ligand stoichiometry, octahedral configuration and the ligand behaves as a neutral tetradendate towards the metal ions. [CdL(OH2)2] (V), [CoL(OH2)2] (VI), [CuL(OH2)2] (VII) and [Ni(H2L)(NO3)2] (VIII) were synthesized pyrolytically in solid state from corresponding compounds (I-IV). Analytical results of complexes (V-VIII) show that the ligand behaves either as a neutral tetradendate or dianionic tetradentate ligand towards the metal ions. The binding of H2L and its copper complex (III) to DNA has been investigated by ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. The experiments indicate that H2L and its copper complex (III) can bind to DNA through an intercalative mode. The H2L and its copper complex (III) exhibited anti-tumor activity against Ehrlich Acites Carcinoma (E.A.C) at the concentration of 100 μg/ml.

Abstract
A new dimeric Cu(II) complex [Cu(mu(2)-hep)(hep-H)](2).2PF(6) (1) containing a bidentate (hep-H = 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)pyridine) ligand was synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Each Cu ion in 1 is in a distorted square pyramidal geometry. Further 1 is used as a modifier in the construction of a biomimetic sensor for determining phenols [phenol (Phe), resorcinol (Res), hydroquinone (HQ), and catechol (Cat)] in phosphate buffer by using cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronocoulometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and square wave voltammetry (SWV). DPV has been proposed for trace determination of Phe and Res while SWV for HQ and Cat. The method has been applied for the selective and precise analysis of Phe in commercial injections, Res in hair coloring agents, HQ in photographic developers and cosmetics, and Cat in tea samples and guarana tablets. The calibration curves showed a linear response ranging between 10(-6) and 10(-8) M for all four of the analytes with detection limits (3sigma) of 1.04 x 10(-8), 2.31 x 10(-8), 1.54 x 10(-8), and 0.86 x 10(-8) M for Phe, Res, HQ, and Cat, respectively. The lifetime of the biomimetic sensor was 200 days at room temperature (at least 750 determinations). The catalytic properties of 1-CPE were characterized by chronoamperometry and were found to be in good agreement with Michaelis-Menten kinetics.

Abstract
A new copper(II) complex [Cu(C12H23N3)4Br2·2H2O] was synthesized and its structure was characterized by x-ray crystallography and elemental analysis. The copper atom had a distorted octahedron coordination involving two bromide anions and four nitrogen atoms from the 1-decyl-1H-[1,2,4]triazole ligands. Moreover, the electrochemical behavior and electrocatalysis of the carbon paste electrode (Cu-CPE) bulk-modified by the complex have been studied in detail. The Cu-CPE showed excellent electrocatalytic activities toward the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and nitrite, and the detection limit was much lower than that mentioned in earlier reports. This bulk-modified CPE has good reproducibility, long-term stability and surface renewability, which appear promising for constructing chemical sensors.
