Synthesis and cytotoxicity against tumor cells of pincer N-heterocyclic ligands and their transition metal complexes. RSC Adv 2021; 11:34742-34753. Abstract
The complexes: [CoL2](ClO4)2 (1), [FeL2](ClO4)2 (2), [NiL2](ClO4)2 (3) and [MnLCl2] (4), with L = diethyl-1,1′-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(5-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylate), were synthesized and fully characterized. Structural analysis revealed two distinct patterns influenced by the counter ions where L acts as a tridentate chelating ligand. The in vitro antitumor activity of L and L′ (diethyl 2,2′-(pyridine-2,6-diylbis(5-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3,1-diyl)) diacetate) as well as their metal complexes, was tested by the measurement of their cytostatic and cytotoxic properties towards the blood cancer mastocytoma cell line P815. We have also investigated their interactions with the antioxidant enzyme system. As a result, [MnL′Cl2] (1′) exhibited the strongest activity compared to reference cis-platin with no cytotoxicity towards normal cells PBMCs (Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells). On the other hand, the antioxidant enzyme activity showed that the efficiency of metal complex 1′ against P815 tumor cells was via the rise in the SOD activity and inhibition of CAT enzyme activity. This proof of concept study allows disclosure of a new class of molecules in cancer therapeutics. The complexes: [CoL2](ClO4)2 (1), [FeL2](ClO4)2 (2), [NiL2](ClO4)2 (3) and [MnLCl2] (4), with L = diethyl-1,1′-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(5-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylate), were synthesized and fully characterized.![]()

Abstract
A series of water-soluble copper(II) complexes based on 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dmphen) and mixed-ligands, containing PTA=O (1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane-7-oxide) have been synthesized and fully characterized. Two types of complexes have been obtained, monocationic [Cu(NO3)(O-PTA=O)(dmphen)][PF6] (1), [Cu(Cl)(dmphen)2][PF6] (2), and neutral [Cu(NO3)2(dmphen)] (3). The solid-state structures of all complexes have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Magnetic studies for the complex 1–3 indicated a very weak antiferromagnetic interaction between copper(II) ions in crystal lattice. Complexes were successfully evaluated for their cytotoxic activities on the normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cell line and the antitumor activity using the human lung carcinoma (A549), epithelioid cervix carcinoma (HeLa), colon (LoVo), and breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines. Complexes 1 and 3 revealed lower toxicity to NHDF than A549 and HeLa cells, meanwhile compound 2 appeared to be more toxic to NHDF cell line in comparison to all cancer lines. Additionally, interactions between the complexes and human apo-transferrin (apo-Tf) using fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy were also investigated. All compounds interacted with apo-transferrin, causing same changes of the protein conformation. Electrostatic interactions dominate in the 1/2 – apo- Tf systems and hydrophobic and ionic interactions in the case of 3.

Abstract
(1) For the first time a terpyrideine-Cu(ii) complex was used for the selective detection of F− ions. (2) A dual mode detection method comprising chromo-luminescent techniques was used to evaluate the sensing mechanism. (3) The limit of detection was found to be 5.07 μM which is within the permissible level of F− ions in drinking water according to the WHO.

Abstract
The diversity of the self-assembled structures of a Cu complex via hydrogen bonding, including a square planar unit, is reported. The Cu complex forms two self-assembled structures by hydrogen bonding, depending on the acidity of the recrystallization conditions. A linear chain structure can be produced under acidic conditions, and a three-dimensional network structure is observed under basic conditions. The linear chain structure is constructed from intermolecular sharing of a hydrogen atom between two 2-pyridinemethanolate units, with an OO distance of 2.412(1) Å and an O-H-O bond angle of 170(3)°. The linear chain structure exhibits relatively strong magnetic coupling (J = -9.91(2) cm-1) via hydrogen bonding between Cu atoms; this coupling was also confirmed by electron spin resonance experiments. Thermochromic behavior was also observed for the complex.

Abstract
A series of the mononuclear Cu(II) metal complexes containing the ligand Bdppz [(9a,13a-dihydro-4,5,9,14-tetraaza-benzo[b]triphenylene-11-yl)-phenyl-methanone] (L1) and Aqphen [(12,17-dihydronaphthol[2,3-h]dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]-phenazine-12,17-dione)] (L2) were synthesized and used as catalyst for the coupling of carbon dioxide (CO2) and liquid epoxide which served as both reactant and solvent. Dimethylamino pyridine (DMAP) was used as co-catalyst. The yields of epoxides to corresponding cyclic carbonates were determined by comparing the ratio of product to substrate in the (1)H NMR spectrum of an aliquot of the reaction mixture. The mononuclear Cu(II) complexes of these ligands were synthesized by treating an ethanol solvent of the appropriate ligand with a different molar amount of CuCl2·2H2O. The Cu(II) complexes were characterized by FT-IR, UV-Vis, elemental analysis, melting point analysis, mass spectra, molar conductivity measurements and magnetic susceptibility techniques. The reaction of the Bdppz and Aqphen ligands in a 1:1, 1:2 or 1:3 mole ratio with CuCl2·2H2O afforded ionic Cu(II) complexes in the presence of Et3N.

Abstract
The synthesis and magnetic characterization of vanillin-based Cu(II) mononuclear complexes of formula [Cu(van)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](H(2)O)(x) (van = vanillinate; x = 0, compound 1; x = 2, compounds 2 and 3) were performed. Despite the presence of very similar [Cu(van)(2)(H(2)O)(2)] moieties, the crystal structures exhibit distinct Cu···Cu contacts and display three different through-H-bond exchange-coupling pathways. As a result of the relative positions of the water molecules, the experimental (MAGSUS) exchange-coupling constants are dissimilar, i.e., J(1) = -3.0 cm(-1) (the data have been fitted to the Bleaney-Bowers equation considering a dimer; 2J = -6.0 cm(-1)), J(2) = -4.0 cm(-1) (the data have been fitted to the Bonner-Fischer equation for a chain of monomeric copper(II) units), whereas compound 3 is paramagnetic. Subsequently, the theoretical density functional theory (DFT) and wave function theory-based (DDCI) calculations were carried out to better understand the role of the water molecule as a mediator of the magnetic coupling. The use of localized orbitals allows one to elucidate the role of the H-bonds in generating exchange interactions. Since the exchange-coupling constants are strongly dependent on the mechanisms selectively introduced, the role of the H-bond is demonstrated.
