Organometallics in molecular junctions: conductance, functions, and reactions

Molecular junctions, which involve sandwiching molecular structures between electrodes, play a crucial role in molecular electronics. Recent advances in this field have revealed the vital role of organometallic chemistry in the investigation of molecular junctions, which has added to their well-known contributions to catalysis and materials chemistry. This review summarizes the recent examples of organometallic chemistry applications in molecular junctions, which can be categorized into three types, i.e., class I encompassing molecular junctions with bridging organometallic complexes, class II involving molecular junctions with covalent and noncovalent metal electrode-carbon bonds, and class III comprising organometallic reactions within molecular junctions.

Charge Transport in Conjugated and Saturated Hydrocarbons: Comparing Ballistic and Cotunneling Contributions

The comparison between electrical transport in CnH2n+2S2 alkane and CnHn+2S2 alkene (n = 4, 6, 8, 10) is studied by using a generalized Breit-Wigner approach and considering coherent transport mechanisms and eventual changes in the state of charge (i.e., cotunneling processes) for both molecules. In general, the conductance of alkanes tends to be smaller than that of similar-sized alkenes. However, cotunneling processes have an important participation in the overall transport in the case of alkanes but not for the alkene family. The progressive changes in both the eigenenergies of the relevant frontier molecular orbitals of the charged species and their spatial localization play decisive roles in the observed differences. While the molecular orbitals of the charged species of the conjugated molecules are hardly affected by the applied voltage, their saturated counterparts are quite sensitive to the external field. With this, successive avoided-crossing events between the molecular orbitals of the single-charged alkane molecules can lead to the appearance of nonballistic conduction channels that make no negligible contributions to the molecular transport.

A convenient synthesis of ferrocene-(ethynylphenyl)thioacetates

Ferrocene is popular within the field of molecular electronics due to its well-defined electronic properties. However, where the conductance of highly-conjugated oligophenylethylenes has been widely studied, work on analogous ferrocenyl systems has been relatively rare, possibly due to difficulties associated with the synthesis of molecules containing terminal thioacetates, which are often used to bind molecules to metallic electrodes. Herein, a widely applicable synthetic methodology is demonstrated which can be used to synthesize a variety of conjugated ferrocene-alkyne systems terminated with thioacetates, including symmetric, asymmetric and multi-ferrocene systems. Conjugation of the ferrocene units to their terminal atoms is then shown through the use of both UV/Vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. This work paves the way for future studies and applications of conjugated ferrocene systems in the field of nanoelectronics.

Self-Assembled Monolayers of Molecular Conductors with Terpyridine-Metal Redox Switching Elements: A Combined AFM, STM and Electrochemical Study

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of terpyridine-based transition metal (ruthenium and osmium) complexes, anchored to gold substrate via tripodal anchoring groups, have been investigated as possible redox switching elements for molecular electronics. An electrochemical study was complemented by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) methods. STM was used for determination of the SAM conductance values, and computation of the attenuation factor β from tunneling current-distance curves. We have shown that SAMs of Os-tripod molecules contain larger adlayer structures compared with SAMs of Ru-tripod molecules, which are characterized by a large number of almost evenly distributed small islands. Furthermore, upon cyclic voltammetric experimentation, Os-tripod films rearrange to form a smaller number of even larger islands, reminiscent of the Ostwald ripening process. Os-tripod SAMs displayed a higher surface concentration of molecules and lower conductance compared with Ru-tripod SAMs. The attenuation factor of Os-tripod films changed dramatically, upon electrochemical cycling, to a higher value. These observations are in accordance with previously reported electron transfer kinetics studies.

Assembly, structure and thermoelectric properties of 1,1'-dialkynylferrocene 'hinges'

Dialkynylferrocenes exhibit attractive electronic and rotational features that make them ideal candidates for use in molecular electronic applications. However previous works have primarily focussed on single-molecule studies, with limited opportunities to translate these features into devices. In this report, we utilise a variety of techniques to examine both the geometric and electronic structure of a range of 1,1'-dialkynylferrocene molecules, as either single-molecules, or as self-assembled monolayers. Previous single molecule studies have shown that similar molecules can adopt an 'open' conformation. However, in this work, DFT calculations, STM-BJ experiments and AFM imaging reveal that these molecules prefer to occupy a 'hairpin' conformation, where both alkynes point towards the metal surface. Interestingly we find that only one of the terminal anchor groups binds to the surface, though both the presence and nature of the second alkyne affect the thermoelectric properties of these systems. First, the secondary alkyne acts to affect the position of the frontier molecular orbitals, leading to increases in the Seebeck coefficient. Secondly, theoretical calculations suggested that rotating the secondary alkyne away from the surface acts to modulate thermoelectric properties. This work represents the first of its kind to examine the assembly of dialkynylferrocenes, providing valuable information about both their structure and electronic properties, as well as unveiling new ways in which both of these properties can be controlled.

Formation and Evolution of Metallocene Single-Molecule Circuits with Direct Gold-π Links

Single-molecule circuits with group 8 metallocenes are formed without additional linker groups in scanning tunneling microscope-based break junction (STMBJ) measurements at cryogenic and room-temperature conditions with gold (Au) electrodes. We investigate the nature of this direct gold-π binding motif and its effect on molecular conductance and persistence characteristics during junction evolution. The measurement technique under cryogenic conditions tracks molecular plateaus through the full cycle of extension and compression. Analysis reveals that junction persistence when the metal electrodes are pushed together correlates with whether electrodes are locally sharp or blunt, suggesting distinct scenarios for metallocene junction formation and evolution. The top and bottom surfaces of the "barrel"-shaped metallocenes present the electron-rich π system of cyclopentadienyl rings, which interacts with the gold electrodes in two distinct ways. An undercoordinated gold atom on a sharp tip forms a donor-acceptor bond to a specific carbon atom in the ring. However, a small, flat patch on a dull tip can bind more strongly to the ring as a whole through van der Waals interactions. Density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations of model electrode structures provide an atomic-scale picture of these scenarios, demonstrating the role of these bonding motifs during junction evolution and showing that the conductance is relatively independent of tip atomic-scale structure. The nonspecific interaction of the cyclopentadienyl rings with the electrodes enables extended conductance plateaus, a mechanism distinct from that identified for the more commonly studied, rod-shaped organic molecular wires.

Impact of device design on the electronic and optoelectronic properties of integrated Ru-terpyridine complexes

The performance of nanoelectronic and molecular electronic devices relies strongly on the employed functional units and their addressability, which is often a matter of appropriate interfaces and device design. Here, we compare two promising designs to build solid-state electronic devices utilizing the same functional unit. Optically addressable Ru-terpyridine complexes were incorporated in supramolecular wires or employed as ligands of gold nanoparticles and contacted by nanoelectrodes. The resulting small-area nanodevices were thoroughly electrically characterized as a function of temperature and light exposure. Differences in the resulting device conductance could be attributed to the device design and the respective transport mechanism, that is, thermally activated hopping conduction in the case of Ru-terpyridine wire devices or sequential tunneling in nanoparticle-based devices. Furthermore, the conductance switching of nanoparticle-based devices upon 530 nm irradiation was attributed to plasmon-induced metal-to-ligand charge transfer in the Ru-terpyridine complexes used as switching ligands. Finally, our results reveal a superior device performance of nanoparticle-based devices compared to molecular wire devices based on Ru-terpyridine complexes as functional units.

Hard-Soft Chemistry Design Principles for Predictive Assembly of Single Molecule-Metal Junctions

The achievement of atomic control over the organic-inorganic interface is key to engineering electronic and spintronic properties of molecular devices. We leverage insights from inorganic chemistry to create hard-soft acid-base (HSAB) theory-derived design principles for incorporation of single molecules onto metal electrodes. A single molecule circuit is assembled via a bond between an organic backbone and an under-coordinated metal atom of the electrode surface, typically Au. Here, we study molecular composition factors affecting the junction assembly of coordination complexes containing transition metals atoms on Au electrodes. We employ hetero- and homobimetallic lantern complexes and systematically change the coordination environment to vary the character of the intramolecular bonds relative to the electrode-molecule interaction. We observe that trends in the robustness and chemical selectivity of single molecule junctions formed with a range of linkers correlate with HSAB principles, which have traditionally been used to guide atomic arrangements in the synthesis of coordination complexes. We find that this similarity between the intermolecular electrode-molecule bonding in a molecular circuit and the intramolecular bonds within a coordination complex has implications for the design of metal-containing complexes compatible with electrical measurements on metal electrodes. Our results here show that HSAB principles determine which intramolecular interactions can be compromised by inter molecule-electrode coordination; in particular on Au electrodes, soft-soft metal-ligand bonding is vulnerable to competition from soft-soft Au-linker bonding in the junction. Neutral donor-acceptor intramolecular bonds can be tuned by the Lewis acidity of the transition metal ion, suggesting future synthetic routes toward incorporation of transition metal atoms into molecular junctions for increased functionality of single molecule devices.

Conductance Switching in an Organometallic Single-Electron Transistor Using Current-Constrained Reduced-Density Matrix Theory

We report switching of molecular conductance at finite bias in a binuclear organometallic complex and its cation which were previously experimentally analyzed at low voltages to see the signature of Kondo resonance. The variational reduced density matrix theory is applied to show that the system is strongly multireferenced especially in its charged form. We also study the molecular conductance of both forms using recently developed current-constrained two-electron reduced density matrix theory which is capable of handling strong electronic correlation. We compare the results against an uncorrelated 1-electron reduced density matrix version of conductance calculations using Hartree-Fock molecular orbitals. We observe that despite quantitative disagreements, the qualitative trend in the conductance is correctly predicted to be favorable for the cationic partner by both methods. We explain the results using the inherently high density of states for the low-lying excited states in the cationic partner which is also replicable from uncorrelated electronic structure methods. Our results not only indicate that the low-bias conductance trend is maintained even beyond the Kondo regime and produces quantitative agreement with that of the experiment but also identifies important physical markers that are responsible for the high conductance of the charged species.

Single-cluster electronics

This article reviews the scope of inorganic cluster compounds interrogated in single-molecule break-junction measurements. This body of work lies at the intersection between the fields of inorganic cluster chemistry and single-molecule electronics, where discrete inorganic cluster molecules are used as the active components in molecular electronic circuitry. We explore the breadth of transition metal and main group cluster compounds that have been studied in single-cluster junctions, largely within the context of scanning tunnelling microscopy break-junction (STM-BJ) measurements. Our discussion centers on how the structure and bonding of inorganic cluster compounds give rise to desirable quantum transport effects such as room-temperature current blockade, sequential tunneling, voltage-gated conductance switching, destructive quantum interference, and high thermoelectric currents.

Molecular Structure-(Thermo)electric Property Relationships in Single-Molecule Junctions and Comparisons with Single- and Multiple-Parameter Models

The most probable single-molecule conductance of each member of a series of 12 conjugated molecular wires, 6 of which contain either a ruthenium or platinum center centrally placed within the backbone, has been determined. The measurement of a small, positive Seebeck coefficient has established that transmission through these molecules takes place by tunneling through the tail of the HOMO resonance near the middle of the HOMO-LUMO gap in each case. Despite the general similarities in the molecular lengths and frontier-orbital compositions, experimental and computationally determined trends in molecular conductance values across this series cannot be satisfactorily explained in terms of commonly discussed "single-parameter" models of junction conductance. Rather, the trends in molecular conductance are better rationalized from consideration of the complete molecular junction, with conductance values well described by transport calculations carried out at the DFT level of theory, on the basis of the Landauer-Büttiker model.

Single-Electron Currents in Designer Single-Cluster Devices

Atomically precise clusters can be used to create single-electron devices wherein a single redox-active cluster is connected to two macroscopic electrodes via anchoring ligands. Unlike single-electron devices comprising nanocrystals, these cluster-based devices can be fabricated with atomic precision. This affords an unprecedented level of control over the device properties. Herein, we design a series of cobalt chalcogenide clusters with varying ligand geometries and core nuclearities to control their current-voltage (I-V) characteristics in a scanning tunneling microscope-based break junction (STM-BJ) device. First, the device geometry is modified by precisely positioning junction-anchoring ligands on the surface of the cluster. We show that the I-V characteristics are independent of ligand placement, confirming a sequential, single-electron tunneling mechanism. Next, we chemically fuse two clusters to realize a larger cluster dimer that behaves as a single electronic unit, possessing a smaller reorganization energy and more accessible redox states than the monomeric analogues. As a result, dimer-based devices exhibit significantly higher currents and can even be pushed to current saturation at high bias. Owing to these controllable properties, single-cluster junctions serve as an excellent platform for exploring incoherent charge transport processes at the nanoscale. With this understanding, as well as properties such as nonlinear I-V characteristics and rectification, these molecular clusters may function as conductive inorganic nodes in new devices and materials.

Constructing Dual-Molecule Junctions to Probe Intermolecular Crosstalk

Understanding and controlling charge transport across multiple parallel molecules are fundamental to the creation of innovative functional electronic components, as future molecular devices will likely be multimolecular. The smallest possible molecular ensemble to address this challenge is a dual-molecule junction device, which has potential to unravel the effects of intermolecular crosstalk on electronic transport at the molecular level that cannot be elucidated using either conventional single-molecule or self-assembled monolayer (SAM) techniques. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) dual-molecule junction device, which utilizes noncovalent interactions and allows for direct comparison to the conventional STM single-molecule device. STM-break junction (BJ) measurements reveal a decrease in conductance of 10% per molecule from the dual-molecule to the single-molecule junction device. Quantum transport simulations indicate that this decrease is attributable to intermolecular crosstalk (i.e., intermolecular π-π interactions), with possible contributions from substrate-mediated coupling (i.e., molecule-electrode). This study provides the first experimental evidence to interpret intermolecular crosstalk in electronic transport at the STM-BJ level and translates the experimental observations into meaningful molecular information to enhance our fundamental knowledge of this subject matter. This approach is pertinent to the design and development of future multimolecular electronic components and also to other dual-molecular systems where such crosstalk is mediated by various noncovalent intermolecular interactions (e.g., electrostatic and hydrogen bonding).

Hydrogenating an organometallic carbon chain: buten-yn-diyl (CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C) as a missing link

The sequential reaction of [Ru(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH)Cl(CO)2(PPh3)2] with [Ru(CO)2(PPh3)3], and N-chlorosuccinimide affords the binuclear tetracarbido complex [Ru2(μ-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)Cl2(CO)4(PPh3)4]. This may be compared with the first example of a butenyndiyl bridged bimetallic complex [Ru2(μ-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)Cl2(CO)4(PPh3)4] which is obtained from the reaction of [Ru(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH)Cl(CO)2(PPh3)2] with [RuHCl(CO)(PPh3)3] followed by carbonylation. Characterisational data are discussed with reference to constituent model complexes [Ru(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH)Cl(CO)2(PPh3)2] and [Ru(CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH2)Cl(CO)2(PPh3)2] in addition to DFT analysis of the bonding in the complexes [Ru2(μ-L)Cl2(CO)4(PMe3)4] (L = C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C, CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C, CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH). A range of other tetracarbido complexes which may be prepared from [RuCl(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH)(CO)2(PPh3)2] is also described and includes [RuAu(μ-C4)Cl(CO)3(PPh3)3], [RuIr(μ-C4)Cl(CO)3(PPh3)4], [RuIr(μ-C4)H(NCMe)(CO)3(PPh3)4]BF4, [RuIr(μ-C4)Cl(η2-O2)(CO)3(PPh3)4], [Ru2Hg(μ-C4)2Cl2(CO)4(PPh3)4], [Ru2Pt(μ-C4)2Cl2(CO)4(PPh3)6] and [Ru2(μ-C4)HCl(CO)4(PPh3)4].

Conductive Self-Assembled Monolayers of Paramagnetic {CoII Co 4 III } and { Co 4 II Co 2 III } Coordination Clusters on Gold Surfaces

Two polynuclear cobalt(II,III) complexes, [Co5(N3)4(N-n-bda)4(bza·SMe)2] (1) and [Co6(N3)4(N-n-bda)2(bza·SMe)5(MeOH)4]Cl (2), where Hbza·SMe = 4-(methylthio)benzoic acid and N-n-H2bda = N-n-butyldiethanolamine, were synthesized and fully characterized by various techniques. Compound 1 exhibits an unusual, approximately C 2-symmetric {CoIICo 4 III } core of two isosceles Co3 triangles with perpendicularly oriented planes, sharing a central, high-spin CoII ion residing in a distorted tetrahedral coordination environment. This central CoII ion is connected to four outer, octahedrally coordinated low-spin CoIII ions via oxo bridges. Compound 2 comprises a semi-circular {Co 4 II Co 2 III } motif of four non-interacting high-spin CoII and two low-spin CoIII centers in octahedral coordination environments. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 1 and 2 were physisorbed on template-stripped gold surfaces contacted by an eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) tip. The acquired current density-voltage (I-V) data revealed that the cobalt-based SAMs are more electrically robust than those of the previously reported dinuclear {CuIILnIII} complexes with Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, or Y (Schmitz et al., 2018a). In addition, between 170 and 220°C, the neutral, mixed-valence compound 1 undergoes a redox modification, yielding a {Co5}-based coordination cluster (1-A) with five non-interacting, high-spin octahedral CoII centers as indicated by SQUID magnetometry analysis in combination with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. Solvothermal treatment of 1 results in a high-nuclearity coordination cluster, [Co10(N3)2(N-n-bda)6(bza·SMe)6] (3), containing 10 virtually non-interacting high-spin CoII centers.

Metal coordination to a dimetallaoctatetrayne

The reactions of the ditungstaoctatetrayne [(Tp*)(CO)₂W([triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash])W(CO)₂(Tp*)] with several metal complexes have been investigated. Addition of [Co₂(CO)₈] occurs across the internal C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C bonds, whereas [AuCl(SMe₂)] initially delivers 'AuCl' across the W[triple bond, length as m-dash]C carbyne bonds before undergoing further reaction to oxidise the tungsten and replace the carbonyl ligands with chloride in [(Tp*)Cl₂W([triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash])WCl₂(Tp*)] with retention of the ditungstaoctatetrayne bridge. Reaction with [AuCl(PR₃)] (R = Ph, Cy) in the presence of AgPF₆ prevents this oxidation and adds [AuPR₃]⁺ across the W[triple bond, length as m-dash]C bonds to give dicationic derivatives. Finally, the reaction with [Pt(nbe)₃] (nbe = norbornene, bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene) and 1,5-cyclooctadiene (COD) adds a 'Pt(COD)' unit to one or both tungsten-carbon bonds, allowing both the mono- and diplatinum complexes to be isolated.

Metal bis(acetylide) complex molecular wires: concepts and design strategies

The past decade has seen a remarkable surge in studies of thin-film and single-molecule electronics, due in no small part to the development and advancement of experimental methods for the construction and measurement of metal|molecule|metal junctions. Within the plethora of molecular structures that have been investigated, metal complexes of general form trans-M(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)2(Ln) have attracted attention from the inorganic and organometallic chemistry community in the search for efficient molecular wires due to the potential π-d-π orbital mixing along the molecular backbone. In this article progress towards this goal will be summarised, and design strategies for future molecular components discussed.

Molecular rectifiers based on five-coordinate iron(iii)-containing surfactants

The state-of-the-art of metallorganic-based molecular rectification is reviewed with an emphasis on asymmetric five-coordinate Fe^III-containing surfactants in electrode|LB film|electrode assemblies.
