Metal complexes of backbone-halogenated imidazol-2-ylidenes

In this manuscript, literature reports on mono- and di-halogen (F, Cl, Br, and I) substituted at positions 4 or/and 4,5 imidazol-2-ylidene (NHC) metal complexes are discussed: particularly, their structural diversity with various metals (groups 6-13), important physicochemical properties, catalytic and medicinal/biological applications are reviewed. To our knowledge, there are no literature reports on group 4 and 5 metal complexes with this type of NHC ligands. Halogenated imidazol-2-ylidene metal complexes deserve special attention because halogens are the classic electron donating groups (mesomerically) in conjugated aromatic/heteroaromatic ring systems, but electron withdrawing inductively. However, they exhibit a significant electron withdrawing inductive effect, thus providing unique electronic properties. This is important for fine tuning of σ-donor abilities of the "carbenic" carbon of imidazol-2-ylidenes, which directly affect catalytic performance of their metal complexes. Other applications, advantages, and disadvantages of halogenated vs. unsubstituted imidazol-2-ylidene metal complexes are critically analyzed and summarized in this review.

Designing Quantum Spaces of Higher Dimensionality from a Tetranuclear Erbium-Based Single-Molecule Magnet

The spin relaxation of an Er3+ tetranuclear single-molecule magnet, [Er(hdcCOT)I]4, (hdcCOT = hexahydrodicyclopentacyclooctatetraenide dianion), is modeled as a near-tetrahedral arrangement of Ising-type spins. Combining evidence from single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, and computational techniques, the slow spin relaxation is interpreted as a consequence of symmetry restrictions imposed on quantum tunneling within the cluster core. The union of spin and spatial symmetries describe a ground state spin-spin coupled manifold wherein 16 eigenvectors generate the 3D quantum spin-space described by the vertices of a rhombic dodecahedron. Analysis of the experimental findings in this context reveals a correlation between the magnetic transitions and edges connecting cubic and octahedral subsets of the eigenspace convex hull. Additionally, the model is shown to map to a theoretically proposed quantum Cayley network, indicating an underexplored synergy between mathematical descriptions of molecular spin interactions and quantum computing configuration spaces.

Diversity of transformation of heteroallenes on acenaphthene-1,2-diimine aluminum oxide

The reactions of oxide [(dpp-bian)Al(μ2-O)2Al(dpp-bian)] (1) (dpp-bian = 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene) with phenyl- or cyclohexylisocyanates result in the formation of carbonimidate derivatives [(dpp-bian)Al(μ-O)(μ-RNCO2)Al(dpp-bian)] (R = Ph, 2; Cy, 3). Addition of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide to compound 1 leads to the formation of ureate complex [(dpp-bian)Al(μ-O)(μ-(CyN)2CO)Al(dpp-bian)] (4). The reactions of the oxide 1 with pinacolborane and catecholborane afford oxo-bridged hydride [{(dpp-bian)Al(H)}(μ-O){Al(OBpin)(dpp-bian)}] (5) and compound [{(dpp-bian)Al(OBCat)}2(μ-O)] (7), respectively. Insertion of cyclohexylisocyanate into the Al-H bond of compound 5 gives CO insertion product [{(dpp-bian)Al(OC(H)NCy)}(μ-O){Al(OBpin)(dpp-bian)}] (6). New compounds have been characterized by ESR and IR spectroscopy; their molecular structures have been established by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The oxide 1 serves as a catalyst for the hydroboration of heteroallenes (isocyanates, carbodiimides) with pinacolborane.

Facile Access to Cationic Methylstannylenes and Silylenes Stabilized by E-Pt Bonding and their Methyl Group Transfer Reactivity

We describe a family of cationic methylstannylene and chloro- and azidosilylene organoplatinum(II) complexes supported by a neutral, binucleating ligand. Methylstannylenes MeSn:+ are stabilized by coordination to PtII and are formed by facile Me group transfer from dimethyl or monomethyl PtII complexes, in the latter case triggered by concomitant B-H, Si-H, and H2 bond activation that involves hydride transfer from Sn to Pt. A cationic chlorosilylene complex was obtained by formal HCl elimination and Cl- removal from HSiCl3 under ambient conditions. The computational studies show that stabilization of cationic methylstannylenes and cationic silylenes is achieved through weak coordination to a neutral N-donor ligand binding pocket. The analysis of the electronic potentials, as well as the Laplacian of electron density, also reveals the differences in the character of Pt-Si vs. Pt-Sn bonding. We demonstrate the importance of a ligand-supported binuclear Pt/tetrel core and weak coordination to facilitate access to tetrylium-ylidene Pt complexes, and a transmetalation approach to the synthesis of MeSnII :+ derivatives.

An efficient one-pot synthesis of pyrazole complexes formed in situ: synthesis, crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface analysis and in vitro biological properties

The molecular crystals of monomeric and dimeric pyrazole complexes were prepared via one-pot syntheses. These are dichloridobis(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole-κN1)cobalt/zinc(0.2/0.8), [Co0.20Zn0.80Cl2(C5H8N2)2] or [Co0.2Zn0.8Cl2(3,5-dmp)2] (1), and bis(μ-3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole)-κ2N1:N2;κ2N2:N1-bis[bromido/chlorido(0.7/0.3)bis(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole-κN1)cobalt/zinc(0.1/0.9)], [Co0.20Zn1.80Br1.40Cl0.60(C5H7N2)2(C5H8N2)2] or [Co0.1Zn0.9Br0.7Cl0.3(μ-3,5-dmp)(3,5-dmp)]2 (2). The isolated complexes contain 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (3,5-dmp) ligands formed in situ from the decomposition of 1-hydroxymethyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazole. In both isolated complexes, some positional disorder is observed at the metal ions and halogen ligands. The molecular crystals of 1 and 2 are centrosymmetric, with the space groups C2/c and P-1, respectively. Additionally, in the dinuclear complex, the pyrazole ring has a bridging coordination function with respect to the metal ions. Both complexes have good biological activities against cancer cells. The results of an in vitro cytotoxicity study indicated that compounds 1 and 2 showed significant cytotoxicity for cancer cell lines, including hepatic (HepG2 cells), lung (A549 cells) and colon cancer cells (SW 480 and SW 620). Based on the calculated IC50 values against human cancer cell lines, it was found that both complexes demonstrated potent antiproliferative activity combined with great selectivity towards cancer cells. Complex 2 was a more effective cytotoxic agent which, at the same time, exhibited high cytocompatibility. The obtained data are very encouraging and could be useful for anticancer drug discovery.

Evaluation of tin nitride (Sn3N4) via atomic layer deposition using novel volatile Sn precursors

Novel Sn precursors, Sn(tbip)2, Sn(tbtp)2, and Sn(tbta)2, were synthesized and characterized using various analytical techniques and density functional theory calculations. These precursors contained cyclic amine ligands derived from iminopyrrolidine. X-ray crystallography revealed the formation of monomeric SnL2 with distorted seesaw geometry. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated the exceptional volatility of all complexes. Sn(tbtp)2 showed the lowest residual weight of 2.7% at 265 °C. Sn3N4 thin films were successfully synthesized using Sn(tbtp)2 as the Sn precursor and NH3 plasma. The precursor exhibited ideal characteristics for atomic layer deposition, with a saturated growth per cycle value of 1.9 Å cy-1 and no need for incubation when the film was deposited at 150-225 °C. The indirect optical bandgap of the Sn3N4 film was approximately 1-1.2 eV, as determined through ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Therefore, this study suggests that the Sn3N4 thin films prepared using the newly synthesized Sn precursor are suitable for application in thin-film photovoltaic devices.

Synthesis and Computational Study of an Optical Fluorescent Sensor for Selective Detection of Ni2+ Ions

The presence of an abnormal amount of Ni2+ in the human body causes various health issues. Therefore, this work aimed to synthesize the curcumin-based fluorescence-on sensor P [2,6-bis((E)-4-chlorobenzylidene)-cyclohexan-1-one] that was capable of selectively responding to Ni2+ ions in aqueous solution. The structure of P was confirmed by 1H NMR and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The Ni2+ ion sensing was based on the fluorescence enhancement of the fluorophore (P) in neutral aqueous medium. The response of the P-based sensor was highly selective toward Ni2+ ions, whereas the possible interferences from other metal cations were negligible. P had a fast response; it was selective and had a sensitive detection limit (LOD = 2 × 10-10 M) toward Ni2+ ions in neutral medium with a high association constant (K) value of 3.6 × 105 M-2 for the complex formation between the P and Ni2+ ions. Job's plot and DFT calculations proved that the binding stoichiometry of P for Ni2+ was 2:1. P was recovered using EDTA as a chelating agent after being employed as a fluorescent sensor. These characteristics ensured the potential use of P as a new class of chemosensor for environmental applications.

Oxygen transfer reactivity mediated by nickel perfluoroalkyl complexes using molecular oxygen as a terminal oxidant

Nickel perfluoroethyl and perfluoropropyl complexes supported by naphthyridine-type ligands show drastically different aerobic reactivity from their trifluoromethyl analogs resulting in facile oxygen transfer to perfluoroalkyl groups or oxygenation of external organic substrates (phosphines, sulfides, alkenes and alcohols) using O₂ or air as a terminal oxidant. Such mild aerobic oxygenation occurs through the formation of spectroscopically detected transient high-valent Ni^III and structurally characterized mixed-valent Ni^II-Ni^IV intermediates and radical intermediates, resembling O₂ activation reported for some Pd dialkyl complexes. This reactivity is in contrast with the aerobic oxidation of naphthyridine-based Ni(CF₃)₂ complexes resulting in the formation of a stable Ni^III product, which is attributed to the effect of greater steric congestion imposed by longer perfluoroalkyl chains.

Synthesis and Characterization of Tetrakis(pentafluoroethyl)indate Salts

In the rising field of organoindium chemistry little is known about the perfluoroorganyl-substituted indium compounds. The increasing use of indium reagents is explained by their high stability and tolerance towards water and functional groups. Here we report on the synthesis of the novel tetrakis(pentafluoroethyl)indate, [In(C₂ F₅ )₄ ]^- , and its characterization in salts with the cations [Li(thf)₃ ]⁺ , Cs⁺ , [PPh₄ ]⁺ and [H₁₄ O₆ ]²⁺ (thf=tetrahydrofuran). To the best of our knowledge, these salts constitute the first perfluoroalkylindates and, in general, the first isolated perfluoroalkylindium compounds which are fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis.

Umpolung in a Pair of Cobalt(III) Terminal Imido/Imidyl Complexes

Reaction of the CoI complex [(TIMMNmes )CoI ](PF6 ) (1) (TIMMNmes =tris-[2-(3-mesityl-imidazolin-2-ylidene)-methyl]amine) with mesityl azide yields the CoIII imide [(TIMMNmes )CoIII (NMes)](PF6 ) (2). Oxidation of 2 with [FeCp2 ](PF6 ) provides access to a rare CoIII imidyl [(TIMMNmes )Co(NMes)](PF6 )2 (3). Single-crystal X-ray diffractometry and EPR spectroscopy confirm the molecular structure of 3 and its S= 1 / 2 ground state. ENDOR, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and computational analyses indicate a ligand-based oxidation; thus, an imidyl-radical electronic structure for 3. Migratory insertion of one ancillary NHC to the imido ligand in 2 gives the CoI N-heterocyclic imine (4) within 12 h. Conversely, it takes merely 0.5 h for 3 to transform to the CoII congener (5). The migratory insertion in 2 occurs via a nucleophilic attack of the imido ligand at the NHC to give 4, whereas in 3, a nucleophilic attack of the NHC at the electrophilic imidyl ligand yields 5. The reactivity shunt upon oxidation of 2 to 3 confirms an umpolung of the imido ligand.

Toggling the Z-type interaction off-on in nickel-boron dihydrogen and anionic hydride complexes

Completing a series of nickel-group 13 complexes, a coordinatively unsaturated nickel-boron complex and its derivatives with a H₂, N₂, or hydride ligand were synthesized and characterized. The toggling "on" of a Ni(0)-B(III) inverse-dative bond enabled the stabilization of a nickel-bound anionic hydride with a remarkably low thermodynamic hydricity of kcal mol^-1 in THF. The flexible topology of the boron metalloligand confers both favorable hydrogen binding affinity and strong hydride donicity, albeit at the cost of high H₂ basicity during deprotonation to form the hydride.

Zinc(II) Complexes with Dimethyl 2,2′-Bipyridine-4,5-dicarboxylate: Structure, Antimicrobial Activity and DNA/BSA Binding Study

Two zinc(II) complexes with dimethyl 2,2′-bipyridine-4,5-dicarboxylate (py-2py) of the general formula [Zn(py-2py)X2], X = Cl− (1) and Br− (2) were synthesized and characterized by NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complexes 1 and 2 are isostructural and adopt a slightly distorted tetrahedral geometry with values of tetrahedral indices τ4 and τ’4 in the range of 0.80–0.85. The complexes were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against two bacterial (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus) and two fungal strains (Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis), while their cytotoxicity was tested on the normal human lung fibroblast cell line (MRC-5) and the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. Complex 1 showed moderate activity against both Candida strains. However, this complex was twofold more cytotoxic compared to complex 2. The complexes tested had no effect on the survival rate of C. elegans. Complex 2 showed the ability to inhibit filamentation of C. albicans, while complex 1 was more effective than complex 2 in inhibiting biofilm formation. The interactions of complexes 1 and 2 with calf thymus DNA (ct-DNA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were studied to evaluate their binding affinity toward these biomolecules.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of a Trinuclear Copper(II) Complex Based on P-Cresol-Substituted Bis(α-Nitronyl Nitroxide) Biradical

Trinuclear copper(II) complex [Cu^II₃(NIT₂PhO)₂Cl₄] was synthesized with p-cresol-substituted bis(α-nitronyl nitroxide) biradical: 4-methyl-2,6-bis(1-oxyl-3-oxido-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-imidazolin-2-yl)phenol (NIT₂PhOH). The crystal structure of this heterospin complex was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and exhibits four unusual seven-membered metallocycles formed from the coordination of oxygen atoms of the N-O groups and of bridging phenoxo (µ-PhO⁻) moieties with copper(II) ions. The crystal structure analysis reveals an incipient agostic interaction between a square planar copper center and a hydrogen-carbon bond from one methyl group carried on the coordinated nitronyl-nitroxide radical. The intramolecular Cu∙∙∙H-C interaction involves a six-membered metallocycle and may stabilize the copper center in square planar coordination mode. From the magnetic susceptibility measurements, the complex, which totals seven S = 1/2 spin carriers, has almost a ground state spin S = 1/2 at room temperature ascribed to strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the nitronyl nitroxide moieties and the copper(II) centers and in between the copper(II) centers through the bridging phenoxo oxygen atom.

Synthesis of substituted (N,C) and (N,C,C) Au(III) complexes: the influence of sterics and electronics on cyclometalation reactions

Cyclometalated Au(III) complexes are of interest due to their catalytic, medicinal, and photophysical properties. Herein, we describe the synthesis of derivatives of the type (N,C)Au(OAc^F)₂ (OAc^F = trifluoroacetate) and (N,C,C)AuOAc^F by a cyclometalation route, where (N,C) and (N,C,C) are chelating 2-arylpyridine ligands. The scope of the synthesis is explored by substituting the 2-arylpyridine core with electron donor or acceptor substituents at one or both rings. Notably, a variety of functionalized Au(III) complexes can be obtained in one step from the corresponding ligand and Au(OAc)₃, eliminating the need for organomercury intermediates, which is commonly reported for similar syntheses. The influence of substituents in the ligand backbone on the resulting complexes was assessed using DFT calculations, ¹⁵N NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. A correlation between the electronic properties of the (N,C) ligands and their ability to undergo cyclometalation was found from experimental studies combined with natural charge analysis, suggesting the cyclometalation at Au(III) to take place via an electrophilic aromatic substitution-type mechanism. The formation of Au(III) pincer complexes from tridentate (N,C,C) ligands was investigated by synthesis and DFT calculations, in order to assess the feasibility of C(sp³)-H bond activation as a synthetic pathway to (N,C,C) cyclometalated Au(III) complexes. It was found that C(sp³)-H bond activation is feasible for ligands containing different alkyl groups (isopropyl and ethyl), although the C-H activation is less energetically favored compared to a ligand containing tert-butyl groups.

Cycloaddition of isoselenocyanates to sodium and magnesium metallacycles

Heterocumulenes SeCNR (R = C₆H₄OMe-2, C₆H₄Me-2) undergo facile cycloaddition to [(H-dpp-bian)Na(Et₂O)₂] (1) (H-dpp-bian = N-protonated 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene) resulting in cycloadducts [(H-dpp-bian)Na(SeCNR)(DME)] (2, 3), which are the first cycloadducts derived from a sodium metallacycle reported so far. A comparative reaction of [(dpp-bian)Mg(THF)₃] (10) with SeCNR gives magnesium cycloadducts [(dpp-bian)Mg(SeCNR)(Solv)₂] (11, 12), which undergo fast decomposition at room temperature. New compounds are characterized by NMR, EPR, and IR spectroscopy, and elemental and X-ray diffraction analysis. Their electronic structures and reaction pathways were probed using DFT calculations.

Crystal structures of 3/4-pyridyl-based thiosemicarbazones and related Cu and Ni coordination compounds

In this investigation, the crystal structures of the thio-ligands 3-formylpyridine 4-phenylthiosemicarbazone (C₁₃H₁₂N₄S, 1) and 4-benzoylpyridine 4-ethylthiosemicarbazone (C₁₅H₁₆N₄S, 2), and of two new coordination compounds, chlorido(3-formylpyridine 4-phenylthiosemicarbazone-κS)bis(triphenylphosphane-κP)copper(I) acetonitrile monosolvate, [CuCl(C₁₃H₁₂N₄S)(C₁₈H₁₅P)₂]·CH₃CN, 3, and bis(3-formylpyridine 4-ethylthiosemicarbazonato-κ²N¹,S)nickel(II), [Ni(C₉H₁₁N₄S)₂], 4, are reported. In complex 3, the thio-ligand coordinates in a neutral form to the Cu atom through its S-donor atom, and in complex 4, the anionic thio-ligand chelates to the Ni atom through N- and S-donor atoms. The geometry of complex 3 is distorted tetrahedral [bond angles 99.70 (5)-123.23 (5)°], with the P-Cu-P bond angle being the largest, while that of complex 4 is square planar, with trans-S-Ni-S and N-Ni-N bond angles of 180°.

Reduction of CO2 with Aluminum Hydrides Supported with Ar-BIAN Radical-Anions (Ar-BIAN = 1,2-Bis(arylimino)acenaphthene)

The reactions of H₂AlCl with [(dpp-Bian)Na(Et₂O)_n] and [(Ar^BIG-Bian)Na(THF)] produce respective aluminum hydrides supported by radical-anionic 1,2-bis(arylimino)acenaphthene ligands, [(dpp-Bian)AlH₂] (1) and [(Ar^BIG-Bian)AlH₂(THF)] (2) (dpp-Bian = 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene); Ar^BIG-Bian = 1,2-bis[(2,6-dibenzhydryl-4-methylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene). The reaction of 1 with CO₂ proceeds with reduction of both C═O bonds and results in diolate [{(dpp-Bian)Al(μ-O₂CH₂)}₂] (3). Complex 2 reacts with CO₂ to carbonate [{(Ar^BIG-Bian)Al(μ-OCH₂OCO₂)}₂] (4) that is a result of the insertion of CO₂ into the Al-O bond in diolate species formed initially. Aluminum monohydrides [(dpp-Bian)AlH(X)] (X = Cl, 5; Me, 6) react with CO₂ to form respective alumoxanes [{(dpp-Bian)AlX}₂(μ-O)] (X = Cl, 7 and X = Me, 8). Compounds 1-4, 7, and 8 have been characterized by ESR and IR spectroscopy, and their molecular structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Investigations into the structure, reactivity, and AACVD of aluminium and gallium amidoenoate complexes

Amidoenoate (AME = {ethyl-3-(R-amido)but-2-enoate}) complexes of aluminium and gallium, of the type: [AlCl₂(AME^R)] R = iPr (1-Al); [AlCl(AME^R)₂] R = iPr (2-Al), Dip (3-Al); [GaCl₂(AME^R)] R = iPr (1-Ga) and [GaCl(AME^R)₂] R = iPr (2-Ga), Dip (3-Ga), have been synthesised (iPr = isopropyl, Dip = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl). The coordination chemistry of these complexes has been studied in relation to precursor suitability. Investigations into the reactivity of the aluminium and gallium amidoenoate complexes involved reactions with hydride sources including alkali metal hydride salts, alkylsilanes, and magnesium hydride species and magnesium(I) dimers. The isolation of alkyl metal amidoenoate precursors including an aluminium hydride amidoenoate, [AlH(AME^Dip)₂] (4-Al) and dimethyl gallium amidoenoates [GaMe₂(AME^Dip)] (4-Ga), [GaMe₂(AME^iPr)] (5-Ga) concluded the synthetic studies. A selection of the isolated complexes were used as precursors for aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) at 500 °C. Thin films of either amorphous Al₂O₃ or Ga₂O₃ were deposited and subsequently annealed at 1000 °C to improve the materials' crystallinity. The films were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA).

Structural Elucidation, Aggregation, and Dynamic Behaviour of N,N,N,N-Copper(I) Schiff Base Complexes in Solid and in Solution: A Combined NMR, X-ray Spectroscopic and Crystallographic Investigation

A series of Cu(I) complexes of bidentate or tetradentate Schiff base ligands bearing either 1-H-imidazole or pyridine moieties were synthesized. The complexes were studied by a combination of NMR and X-ray spectroscopic techniques. The differences between the imidazole- and pyridine-based ligands were examined by 1H, 13C and 15N NMR spectroscopy. The magnitude of the 15Nimine coordination shifts was found to be strongly affected by the nature of the heterocycle in the complexes. These trends showed good correlation with the obtained Cu-Nimine bond lengths from single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements. Variable-temperature NMR experiments, in combination with diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) revealed that one of the complexes underwent a temperature-dependent interconversion between a monomer, a dimer and a higher aggregate. The complexes bearing tetradentate imidazole ligands were further studied using Cu K-edge XAS and VtC XES, where DFT-assisted assignment of spectral features suggested that these complexes may form polynuclear oligomers in solid state. Additionally, the Cu(II) analogue of one of the complexes was incorporated into a metal-organic framework (MOF) as a way to obtain discrete, mononuclear complexes in the solid state.

Single-Crystal Investigation, Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, and DFT Study of Third-Order NLO Properties of Unsymmetrical Acyl Thiourea Derivatives

In the current research work, unsymmetrical acyl thiourea derivatives, 4-((3-benzoylthioureido)methyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid (BTCC) and methyl 2-(3-benzoylthioureido)benzoate (MBTB), have been synthesized efficiently. The structures of these crystalline thioureas were unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal diffractional analysis. The crystallographic investigation showed that the molecular configuration of both compounds is stabilized by intramolecular N-H···O bonding. The crystal packing of BTCC is stabilized by strong N-H···O bonding and comparatively weak O-H···S, C-H···O, C-H···π, and C-O···π interactions, whereas strong N-H···O bonding and comparatively weak C-H···O, C-H···S, and C-H···π interactions are responsible for the crystal packing of MBTB. The noncovalent interactions that are responsible for the crystal packing are explored by the Hirshfeld surface analysis for both compounds. The void analysis is performed to find the quantitative strength of crystal packing in both compounds. Additionally, state-of-the-art applied quantum chemical techniques are used to further explore the structure-property relationship in the above-entitled molecules. The optimization of molecular geometries showed a reasonably good correlation with their respective experimental structures. Third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) polarizability calculations were performed to see the advanced functional application of entitled compounds as efficient NLO materials. The average static γ amplitudes are found to be 27.30 × 10^-36 and 102.91 × 10^-36 esu for the compounds BTCC and MBTB, respectively. The γ amplitude of MBTB is calculated to be 3.77 times larger, which is probably due to better charge-transfer characteristics in MBTB. The quantum chemical analysis in the form of 3-D plots was also performed for their frontier molecular orbitals and molecular electrostatic potentials for understanding charge-transfer characteristics. We believe that the current investigation will not only report the new BTCC and MBTB compounds but also evoke the interest of the materials science community in their potential use in NLO applications.

Photoinduced Trifluoromethylation of Arenes and Heteroarenes Catalyzed by High-Valent Nickel Complexes

We describe a series of air-stable Ni^III complexes supported by a simple, robust naphthyridine-based ligand. Access to the high-valent oxidation state is enabled by the CF₃ ligands on the nickel, while the naphthyridine exhibits either a monodentate or bidentate coordination mode that depends on the oxidation state and sterics, and enables facile aerobic oxidation of Ni^II to Ni^III . These Ni^III complexes act as efficient catalysts for photoinduced C(sp² )-H bond trifluoromethylation reactions of (hetero)arenes using versatile synthetic protocols. This blue LED light-mediated catalytic protocol proceeds via a radical pathway and demonstrates potential in the late-stage functionalization of drug analogs.

Uncovering Redox Non-innocent Hydrogen-Bonding in Cu(I)-Diazene Complexes

The life-sustaining reduction of N₂ to NH₃ is thermoneutral yet kinetically challenged by high-energy intermediates such as N₂H₂. Exploring intramolecular H-bonding as a potential strategy to stabilize diazene intermediates, we employ a series of [^xHetTpCu]₂(μ-N₂H₂) complexes that exhibit H-bonding between pendant aromatic N-heterocycles (^xHet) such as pyridine and a bridging trans-N₂H₂ ligand at copper(I) centers. X-ray crystallography and IR spectroscopy clearly reveal H-bonding in [^pyMeTpCu]₂(μ-N₂H₂) while low-temperature ¹H NMR studies coupled with DFT analysis reveals a dynamic equilibrium between two closely related, symmetric H-bonded structural motifs. Importantly, the ^xHet pendant negligibly influences the electronic structure of ^xHetTpCu^I centers in ^xHetTpCu(CNAr^2,6-Me₂) complexes that lack H-bonding as judged by nearly indistinguishable ν(CN) frequencies (2113-2117 cm^-1). Nonetheless, H-bonding in the corresponding [^xHetTpCu]₂(μ-N₂H₂) complexes results in marked changes in ν(NN) (1398-1419 cm^-1) revealed through resonance Raman studies. Due to the closely matched N-H BDEs of N₂H₂ and the pyH⁰ cation radical, the aromatic N-heterocyclic pendants may encourage partial H-atom transfer (HAT) from N₂H₂ to ^xHet through redox-non-innocent H-bonding in [^xHetTpCu]₂(μ-N₂H₂). DFT studies reveal modest thermodynamic barriers for concerted transfer of both H-atoms of coordinated N₂H₂ to the ^xHet pendants to generate tautomeric [^xHetHTpCu]₂(μ-N₂) complexes, identifying metal-assisted concerted dual HAT as a thermodynamically favorable pathway for N₂/N₂H₂ interconversion.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Thermal Study of Divalent Germanium, Tin, and Lead Triazenides as Potential Vapor Deposition Precursors

Only a few M-N bonded divalent group 14 precursors are available for vapor deposition, in particular for Ge and Pb. A majority of the reported precursors are dicoordinated with the Sn(II) amidinates, the only tetracoordinated examples. No Ge(II) and Pb(II) amidinates suitable for vapor deposition have been demonstrated. Herein, we present tetracoordinated Ge(II), Sn(II), and Pb(II) complexes bearing two sets of chelating 1,3-di-tert-butyltriazenide ligands. These compounds are thermally stable, sublime quantitatively between 60 and 75 °C (at 0.5 mbar), and show ideal single-step volatilization by thermogravimetric analysis.

Characterization and Structural Insights of the Reaction Products by Direct Leaching of the Noble Metals Au, Pd and Cu with N,N'-Dimethyl-piperazine-2,3-dithione/I2 Mixtures

In the context of new efficient and safe leaching agents for noble metals, this paper describes the capability of the Me2pipdt/I2 mixture (where Me2pipdt = N,N'-dimethyl-piperazine-2,3-dithione) in organic solutions to quantitatively dissolve Au, Pd, and Cu metal powders in mild conditions (room temperature and pressure) and short times (within 1 h in the reported conditions). A focus on the structural insights of the obtained coordination compounds is shown, namely [AuI2(Me2pipdt)]I3 (1), [Pd(Me2pipdt)2]I2 (2a) and [Cu(Me2pipdt)2]I3 (3), where the metals are found, respectively, in 3+, 2+ and 1+ oxidation states, and of [Cu(Me2pipdt)2]BF4 (4) and [Cu(Me2dazdt)2]I3 (5) (Me2dazdt = N,N'-dimethyl-perhydrodizepine-2,3-dithione) compared with 3. Au(III) and Pd(II) (d8 configuration) form square-planar complexes, whereas Cu(I) (d10) forms tetrahedral complexes. Density functional theory calculations performed on the cationic species of 1-5 help to highlight the nature of the bonding in the different complexes. Finally, the valorization of the noble metals-rich leachates is assessed. Specifically, gold metal is quantitatively recovered from the solution besides the ligands, showing the potential of these systems to promote metal recycling processes.

The influence of the type of halogen substituent and its position on the molecular conformation, intermolecular interactions and crystal packing for a series of 1-benzoyl-3-(halogenophenyl)thioureas

By the reaction of benzoyl chloride, potassium isothiocyanate and the appropriate halogenoaniline, i.e. 2/3/4-(bromo/iodo)aniline, we have obtained five new 1-benzoyl-3-(halogenophenyl)thioureas, namely, 1-benzoyl-3-(2-bromophenyl)thiourea and 1-benzoyl-3-(3-bromophenyl)thiourea, C14H11BrN2OS, and 1-benzoyl-3-(2-iodophenyl)thiourea, 1-benzoyl-3-(3-iodophenyl)thiourea and 1-benzoyl-3-(4-iodophenyl)thiourea, C14H11IN2OS. Structural and conformational features of the compounds have been analyzed using X-ray diffraction and theoretical calculations. The novel compounds were characterized by solid-state IR and 1H/13C NMR spectroscopy. The conformations and intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, π–π and S(6)...π stacking, and X...O (X = I or Br), I...S and I...π, have been examined and rationalized, together with four analogous compounds described previously in the literature. The set of nine compounds was chosen to examine how a change of the halogen atom and its position on the phenyl ring affects the molecular and crystal structures.
