Zn/Co ZIF family: MW synthesis, characterization and stability upon halogen sorption

A CuCo Bimetal Confined Hollow SiC Hybrid Photothermal Nanoreactor for the Integration of Pollutant Mineralization and Solar-Powered Water Evaporation

Growing attention has been paid to the rational treatment of antibiotics-bearing medical wastewater. However, the complexity of polluted wastewater makes the later comprehensive treatment difficult only by the Advanced Oxidation Process technique. Therefore, the coupled water treatment techniques including contaminant mineralization and regeneration of cleanwater become very attractive. A bimetallic functional hollow nanoreactor defined as (Co@SiO2/Cu-X) was successfully constructed by coating a Cu-doped silica layer on the metal-organic framework (ZIF-67) followed by programmed calcination in nitrogen. The nanoreactor was endowed with a hollow configuration composed of mesoporous N-doping C-Silica hybrid shell encapsulated ultrafine Cu and Co metallic species. Such a configuration allows for the efficient diffusion and open reaction space of big contaminant molecules. The catalytic synergy of exposed Co-Cu bimetals and the easy accessibility of electron-rich contaminants by polar N doping sites triggered surface affinity make the optimal Co@SiO2/Cu-6 afford an excellent catalytic norfloxacin mineralization activity (7 min, kabs=0.744 min-1) compared to Cu-free Co@SiO2-6 (kabs=0.493 min-1) and Co-6 (kabs=0.378 min-1) Benefiting from the above unique advantages, Co@SiO2/Cu-6 show excellent removal performance in degrading different pollutants (carbamazepine, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and bisphenol A) and persistent recycled stability in removing NFX. In addition, by virtue of the excellent photothermal properties, interfacial solar water evaporation application by Co@SiO2/Cu-6 was further explored to reach the regeneration of cleanwater (1.595 kg m-2 h-1, 97.51 %). The integration of pollutant mineralization and solar water evaporation by creating the monolith evaporation by anchoring the Co@SiO2/Cu-6 onto the tailored melamine sponge allows the regeneration of cleanwater (1.6 kg⋅m-2⋅h-1) and synchronous pollutant removal (NFX, 95 %, 60 min), which provides potential possibility the treatment of complicated wastewater.

Iron-Doped Metal-Zinc-Centered Organic Framework Mesoporous Carbon Derivatives for Single-Wavelength NIR-Activated Photothermal/Photodynamic Synergistic Therapy

Recently, single-wavelength synergetic photothermal/photodynamic (PTT/PDT) therapy is beginning to make its mark in cancer treatment, and the key to it is a photosensitizer. In this work, an iron-doped metal-zinc-centered organic framework mesoporous carbon derivative (denoted as Fe_x-Zn-NC_T) with a similar porphyrin property was successfully synthesized by a mild, simple, and green aqueous reaction. The effects of different Fe contents and pyrolysis temperatures on the morphology, structure, and PTT/PDT of Fe_x-Zn-NC_T were investigated. Most importantly, we found that Fe₅₀-Zn-NC₉₀₀ exhibited excellent PTT/PDT performance under single-wavelength near-infrared (808 nm) light irradiation in a hydrophilic environment. The photothermal conversion efficiency (η) was counted as ∼81.3%, and the singlet oxygen (¹O₂) quantum yield (Φ) was compared with indocyanine green (ICG) as ∼0.0041. Furthermore, Fe₅₀-Zn-NC₉₀₀ is provided with a clear ability for generating ¹O₂ in living tumor cells and inducted massive necrosis/apoptosis of tumor cells with single-wavelength near-infrared laser irradiation. All of these are clear to consider that Fe₅₀-Zn-NC₉₀₀ displays great potential as an excellent photosensitizer for single-wavelength dual-mode PTT/PDT therapy.

An efficient modulated synthesis of zirconium metal-organic framework UiO-66

The use of large amounts of deleterious solvents in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is one of the important factors limiting their application in industry. Herein, we present a detailed study of the synthesis of UiO-66, which was conducted with hydrobromic (HBr) acid as a modulator for the first time, at a high concentration of precursor solution (ZrCl4 and H2BDC, both 0.2 mol L-1). Powder crystals with atypical cuboctahedron structure were obtained which indicated that the HBr acid modulator played roles by competitive coordination and deprotonation modulation, thereby controlling the processes of nucleation and crystal growth. The properties of the obtained materials were systematically characterized and compared with those of materials synthesized with hydrofluoric (HF) acid and hydrochloric (HCl) acid modulators. Despite the high concentration of defectivity, the UiO-66 material synthesized with the HBr acid additive has the characteristics of larger specific surface area, excellent thermal stability and higher porosity in the structure. Besides that, the present protocol has the advantages of high reaction mass efficiency (RME), and feasibility of scalable synthesis, providing a facile and sustainable route to diverse Zr-based MOFs.

Removal of Polystyrene Microplastics from Aqueous Solution Using the Metal-Organic Framework Material of ZIF-67

Due to the continuous and adverse effects of microplastics on the environment, an increasing number of studies have begun to focus on their migration patterns and removal from aquatic environments. Herein, our study innovatively evaluated the ability of the capacity of ZIF-67, a novel metal-organic framework (MOF) material, to adsorb polystyrene (PS) microplastics (MPs) from aqueous solutions, aiming to explore the potential of MOF materials to remove MPs from wastewater. The adsorption ratio of PSMPs (5 mg/L, 30 mL) by ZIF-67 reached up to 92.1%, and the PSMP adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 20 min at 298 K. The adsorption of PSMPs would be favored at a pH of 8, a PSMPs solution concentration of 5 mg/L, and a temperature of 298 K. Further analyses demonstrated that hydrogen bond interactions, π-π stacking, and electrostatic interactions played a crucial role in the adsorption of PSMPs by ZIF-67 in aqueous solutions. Our findings thus provide insight into novel methods to remove MPs from acidic and weakly alkaline aquatic environments and wastewater.

Facile synthesis of ZnNC derived from a ZIF-8 metal-organic framework by the microwave-assisted solvothermal technique as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries

Photoswitchable Zirconium MOF for Light-Driven Hydrogen Storage

Here, we report a new photosensitive metal–organic framework (MOF) that was constructed via the modification of UiO-66-NH₂ with diarylethene molecules (DAE, 4-(5-Methoxy-1,2-dimethyl-1H-indol-3-yl)-3-(2,5-dimethylthiophen-3-yl)-4-furan-2,5-dione). The material that was obtained was a highly crystalline porous compound. The photoresponse of the modified MOF was observed via UV–Vis and IR spectroscopy. Most of the DAE molecules inside of the UiO-66-pores had an open conformation after synthesis. However, the equilibrium was able to be shifted further toward an open conformation using visible light irradiation with a wavelength of 520 nm. Conversely, UV-light with a wavelength of 450 nm initiated the transformation of the photoresponsive moieties inside of the pores to a closed modification. We have shown that this transformation could be used to stimulate hydrogen adsorption–desorption processes. Specifically, visible light irradiation increased the H₂ capacity of modified MOF, while UV-light decreased it. A similar hybrid material with DAE moieties in the UiO-66 scaffold was applied for hydrogen storage for the first time. Additionally, the obtained results are promising for smart H₂ storage that is able to be managed via light stimuli.

Bi-metallic zeolite imidazole framework nanofibers for the selective determination of Cd2+ ions

Cobalt zinc-zeolite imidazole framework (Co/Zn-ZIF) nanofibers are made via an electrospinning (ES) approach and tested for the detection of heavy metal cadmium ions. Electrostatically attracted cobalt and zinc ions are bound regularly on the surface of the ZIF network. The cobalt and zinc ions are organized with the ZIF network, which provides the sturdily bonded tetrahedral structure of Co/Zn-ZIF, giving essential steadiness to the composite material. Cyclic voltammetry revealed that the observed profile is reversible, and the catalytic behavior of the electrodes provided evidence of interfacial electron transfer between the nanofiber-modified GCE surface and the metal ions. Interestingly, a careful determination of Cd2+ ions within the range of 100 nM to 1 mM with a low limit detection of 27.27 nM was undertaken. The established heavy metal ion detector shows excellent anti-interference abilities toward the observed electroactive species, and it was successfully employed using a tap water sample for Cd2+ ion detection, where good results were observed.

One-Step Fabrication of Three Metals Zif and its Application for Adsorption of Levofloxacin in Aqueous Solution

Background:

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks with three metals Zn, Co and Ag (ZIF-3M) and ZIF-67 were synthesized at room temperature and characterized with different techniques such as FESEM, BET, EDX and XRD. Then, the synthesized nanoparticles were successfully applied for the removal of levofloxacin from aqueous solutions.

Methods:

To optimize the significant factors (i.e., pH, adsorbent dose and contact time), the response surface methodology (RSM) was implemented based on Box-Behnken design (BBD) in each step, an appropriate amount of adsorbent was added to 30 ppm of a solution containing levofloxacin and the pH was adjusted to the desired value with 0.1 M HCl or 0.1 M NaOH. The mixture was stirred at room temperature and then centrifuged at 7500 rpm for 3 min.

Results:

The optimal conditions for each variable were performed using Box-Behnken design. Results revealed that ZIF-3M nanoparticles more efficiently remove levofloxacin than ZIF-67 in aqueous solution.

Conclusion:

In this research, new three metals ZIF (ZIF-3M) nanoparticles were synthesized with Ag, Zn and Co in aqueous solution and characterized by different techniques. Results indicated successful synthesis with preserving ZIF framework. Results indicated that ZIF-3M has more ability for the removal of levofloxacin than ZIF-67. Isotherm studies showed that the most suitable model for the adsorption of levofloxacin onto ZIF-3M has a good agreement with the Langmuier model.

Immobilization of UiO-67 with photochromic spiropyrans: a quantum chemical study

Post-synthetic modification of MOFs allows tuning the properties according to desired applications. The incorporation of photoactive molecules introduces sensitivity to radiation properties to the matrix of MOFs. We report on the theoretical analysis of possible ways of construction photoactive MOFs from UiO-67 and spiropyran molecules containing different carbonyl substituents. Large-scale computer modeling with the use of density functional theory method allowed us to select the most energy-efficient schemes of design. It was revealed that the most preferred way of immobilization of UiO-67 is the interaction with the carboxylic group in the indoline fragment of spiropyran. These results are promising for the application of MOFs modified in this way as photoactive sensors. Graphical abstract.

Synthesis of ZnO Nanoparticles Doped with Cobalt Using Bimetallic ZIFs as Sacrificial Agents

We report here a simple two-stage synthesis of zinc–cobalt oxide nanoparticles. We used Zn/Co-zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8 materials as precursors for annealing and optional impregnation with a silicon source for the formation of a protective layer on the surface of oxide nanoparticles. Using bimetallic ZIFs allowed us to trace the phase transition of the obtained oxide nanoparticles from wurtzite ZnO to spinel Co₃O₄ structures. Using (X-ray diffraction) XRD and (X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure) XANES techniques, we confirmed the incorporation of cobalt ions into the ZnO structure up to 5 mol.% of Co. Simple annealing of Zn/Co-ZIF-8 materials in the air led to the formation of oxide nanoparticles of about 20–30 nm, while additional treatment of ZIFs with silicon source resulted in nanoparticles of about 5–10 nm covered with protective silica layer. We revealed the incorporation of oxygen vacancies in the obtained ZnO nanoparticles using FTIR analysis. All obtained samples were comprehensively characterized, including analysis with a synchrotron radiation source.

Computational characterization of halogen vapor attachment, diffusion and desorption processes in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8

Computational simulation methods are used for characterizing the detailed attachment, diffusion and desorption of halogen vapor molecules in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). The attachment energies of Cl2, Br2 and I2 are -55.2, -48.5 and -43.0 kJ mol-1, respectively. The framework of ZIF-8 is disrupted by Cl2, which bonds with Zn either on the surface or by freely diffusing into the cage. A framework deformation on the surface of ZIF-8 can be caused by the attachment of Br2, but only reorientation of the 2-methylimidazolate linkers (mIms) for I2. In diffusion, the halogen molecules have a tendency to vertically permeate the apertures of cages followed with swing effect implemented by the mIms. Larger rotation angles of mIms are caused by Br2 because of its stronger interaction with mIms than I2. A maximum of 7 Br2 or 5 I2 molecules can be accommodated in one cage. Br2 are clinging to the mIms and I2 are arranged as crystal layout in the cages, therefore in desorption processes molecules attached to the surface and free inside are desorbed while some remained. These results are beneficial for better understanding the adsorption and desorption processes of halogen vapors in the porous materials.

Nano-gate opening pressures for the adsorption of isobutane, n-butane, propane, and propylene gases on bimetallic Co–Zn based zeolitic imidazolate frameworks

In this article, zeolitic-imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and its mixed metal CoZn-ZIF-8 were synthesized via a rapid microwave method. They exhibited a nanogate opening pressure threshold for the adsorption of C₃ and C₄ compounds.
