From Nanoscale to Macroscale Characterization of Sulfur-Modified Oxidized Carbon Nanotubes in Styrene Butadiene Rubber Compounds

The homogeneous dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a rubber matrix is a key factor limiting their amazing potential. CNTs tend to agglomerate into bundles due to van der Waals interactions. To overcome this limitation, CNTs have been surface-modified with oxygen-bearing groups and sulfur. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques, a deep nanoscale characterization of the morphology, the degree of dispersion of the CNTs in the styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) matrix, and the thickness of the interfacial layer was carried out in this study. In this context, the results from nanoscale characterization showed that the thermal oxidation-sulfur treatment leads to a composite with better dispersion in the matrix, as well as a thicker interfacial layer, indicating a stronger filler-rubber interaction. The second part of this work focused on the macroscale results, such as the Payne effect, vulcanization curves, and mechanical properties. The Payne effect, vulcanization curves, and mechanical properties confirmed the lower reinforcing effect observed in the case of the chemical oxidation treatment because, on the one hand, this composite showed the highest agglomeration of CNTs after the acid treatment. On the other hand, the presence of acid residues provoked the absorption of basic accelerators on the surface of the CNTs.

Comparative Investigation of Nano-Sized Silica and Micrometer-Sized Calcium Carbonate on Structure and Properties of Natural Rubber Composites

Fillers have been widely used in natural rubber (NR) products. They are introduced to serve as a strategy for modifying the final properties of NR vulcanizates. Silica and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) are among the fillers of choice when the color of the products is concerned. In this case, a special focus was to compare the vulcanizing efficiency of NR filled with two different filler types, namely nano-sized silica and micrometer-sized CaCO3. This study focused on the effects of the loading level (10-50 parts per hundred parts of rubber, phr) on the final properties and structural changes of NR composites. The results indicated that increased filler loading led to higher curing torques and stiffness of the rubber composites irrespective of the type of filler used. The better filler dispersion was achieved in composites filled with CaCO3 which is responsible for less polarity of CaCO3 compared to silica. Good filler distribution enhanced filler-matrix interactions, improving swelling resistance and total crosslink density, and delaying stress relaxation. The modulus and tensile strength of both composites also improved over the content of fillers. The CaCO3-filled composites reached their maximum tensile strength at 40 phr, exceeding, by roughly 88%, the strength of an unfilled sample. Conversely, the maximum tensile strength of silica-filled NR was at 20 phr and was only slightly higher than that of its unfilled counterpart. This discrepancy was ascribed to the stronger rubber-filler interactions in cases with CaCO3 filler. Effective rubber-filler interactions improved strain-induced crystallization, increasing crystallinity during stretching and reducing the strain at which crystallization begins. In contrast, large silica aggregates with poor dispersion reduced the overall crosslink density, and degraded the thermomechanical properties, tensile properties, and strain-induced crystallization ability of the NR. The results clearly indicate that CaCO3 should be favored over silica as a filler in the production of some rubber products where high performance was not the main characteristic.

Sulfur-Modified Carbon Nanotubes for the Development of Advanced Elastomeric Materials

The outstanding properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) present some limitations when introduced into rubber matrices, especially when these nano-particles are applied in high-performance tire tread compounds. Their tendency to agglomerate into bundles due to van der Waals interactions, the strong influence of CNT on the vulcanization process, and the adsorptive nature of filler-rubber interactions contribute to increase the energy dissipation phenomena on rubber-CNT compounds. Consequently, their expected performance in terms of rolling resistance is limited. To overcome these three important issues, the CNT have been surface-modified with oxygen-bearing groups and sulfur, resulting in an improvement in the key properties of these rubber compounds for their use in tire tread applications. A deep characterization of these new materials using functionalized CNT as filler was carried out by using a combination of mechanical, equilibrium swelling and low-field NMR experiments. The outcome of this research revealed that the formation of covalent bonds between the rubber matrix and the nano-particles by the introduction of sulfur at the CNT surface has positive effects on the viscoelastic behavior and the network structure of the rubber compounds, by a decrease of both the loss factor at 60 °C (rolling resistance) and the non-elastic defects, while increasing the crosslink density of the new compounds.

Microstructural study of epoxy-based thermosets prepared by “classical” and cationic frontal polymerization

A microstructural study of bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), prepared via both “classical” and novel photo- and thermally-induced cationic frontal polymerization, can help to understand the relationships between the microstructure of epoxides and their material properties, as well as the propagation of frontal polymerization waves. Microstructural PALS characteristics, such as the ortho-positronium lifetime (τ_o-Ps), lifetime distribution, and void fraction, were investigated in relation to the extension of H bonds obtained from ATR/FTIR and the bulk density. The thermal profiles of differently-induced RICFP revealed that photo-triggered propagation is twice as fast as thermally-induced RICFP, with a comparable maximal reaction temperature (∼283 °C) and heat conductivity. Both RICFP-based samples, induced by UV light and heat, showed a lower τ_o-Ps, narrower lifetime distributions, and a reduced void fraction, in comparison to the “classical” cured anhydride-based epoxy sample. These may be the main factors which result in better material properties. In addition, both their radial and angular profiles of free volume fraction confirmed experimentally the rotational movement of the propagating frontal waves and their influence on the microstructural inhomogeneities, and the final material properties.

Epoxides prepared by cationic frontal polymerization have a greater reduced void fraction than “classically” cured samples revealing free-volume consequences of waves.

BEYOND THE SPHERICAL APPROXIMATION: ELONGATED FREE VOLUME HOLES IN RUBBERS: A POSITRON ANNIHILATION STUDY

The free volume fraction, a key parameter for the understanding of mechanical and transport properties of polymers, has been evaluated in a fluoroelastomer and a cis-polyisoprene rubber by means of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and dilatometry. The evaluation showed that the assumption of elongated holes allows one to get a very good agreement between the free volume fraction experimentally determined and the theoretical expectation based on the lattice-hole model. On the other hand, systematic discrepancies are found using the spherical approximation. Moreover, the average hole size is found to be correlated to the effective bond length leff, a parameter connected to reptation motions and largely independent of the polymer structure. The result sheds some light on conformational statistics for the most flexible linear polymers that approach Gaussian chain behavior.

EFFECT OF POLYMER CHAIN MODIFICATIONS ON ELASTOMER PROPERTIES

Considerable attention is paid to the influence of crosslink density and crosslink structures on the behavior of polymer chains and properties of elastomers. However, a very important parameter seems to be underestimated: the modifications to the polymer chains by curatives, formed by sulfur and fragments of accelerators. We draw attention to this important contribution to performance of spatial networks. The emulsion styrene–butadiene rubber samples, cured with tetramethylthiuram disulfide and sulfur (TMTD/S8) and zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate with sulfur (ZDT/S8), were studied. They were characterized in detail in terms of crosslink density and crosslink structures. Microscale techniques were used to obtain information about the behavior of the polymer chains: positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) to study the free volume structure and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) to monitor the glass transition process. Properties such as static mechanical performance and thermo-oxidative stability were also evaluated. All of the investigated characteristics were influenced by a combination of crosslink density, crosslink structures, and, to a large extent, by the modifications of the polymer chains. The effect of the modifications is dependent on the amount and the structure of the curatives' molecules. On the basis of the obtained results, the usefulness of the “phr” unit used for calculation of the curatives' amount has been queried. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that DSC, DMA, and PALS techniques can provide evidence for the presence of the modifications on the polymer chain by curatives.

INFLUENCES OF STYRENE BUTADIENE RUBBER AND SILICA TYPES ON PERFORMANCE OF PASSENGER CAR RADIAL TIRE TREAD

A performance comparison among three types of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), that is, emulsion polymerized SBR (ESBR), solution polymerized SBR (SSBR), and functionalized solution polymerized SBR (F-SSBR), was of interest. Effect of silica type, that is, highly dispersible silica and conventional precipitated silica, was also investigated. It is found that SSBR demonstrates significantly better heat build-up, dynamic set, abrasion resistance, including wet grip (WG) with comparable fuel efficiency, as compared to ESBR. As expected, the best tire performance, that is, abrasion resistance, WG, and fuel efficiency, is found in F-SSBR vulcanizates, attributed mainly to the greatest improvement in magnitude of rubber–filler interaction and degree of filler dispersion. Results reveal that the reactive functional group, that is, propylaminedimethoxysilane, which is chemically anchored at chain ends of F-SSBR, plays a crucial role in tire performance. Unexpectedly, silica type does not significantly influence the degree of filler dispersion, including WG and fuel saving efficiency. Probably, the predominance of sufficiently long mixing time during the compound preparation step may be responsible, as compared to the effect of silica characteristics.

Supramolecular Cross-Links in Poly(alkyl methacrylate) Copolymers and Their Impact on the Mechanical and Reversible Adhesive Properties

Hydrogen-bonded, side-chain-functionalized supramolecular poly(alkyl methacrylate)s were investigated as light- and temperature-responsive reversible adhesives that are useful for bonding and debonding on demand applications. Here, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was functionalized with 2-ureido-4[1H]pyrimidinone (UPy) via a hexamethylenediisocyanate (HMDI) linker, to create a monomer (UPy-HMDI-HEMA) that serves to form supramolecular cross-links by way of forming quadruple hydrogen bonded dimers. UPy-HMDI-HEMA was copolymerized with either hexyl methacrylate or butyl methacrylate to create copolymers comprising 2.5, 5, or 10 mol % of the cross-linker. The mechanical properties of all (co)polymers were investigated with stress-strain experiments and dynamic mechanical analysis. Furthermore, the adhesive properties were studied at temperatures between 20 and 60 °C by testing single lap joints formed with stainless steel substrates. It was found that increasing the concentration of the UPy-HMDI-HEMA cross-linker leads to improved mechanical and adhesive properties at elevated temperatures. Concurrently, the reversibility of the bond formation remained unaffected, where rebonded samples displayed the same adhesive strength as regularly bonded samples. Debonding on demand abilities were also tested exemplarily for one copolymer, which for light-induced debonding experiments was blended with a UV-absorber that served as light-heat converter. Single lap joints were subjected to a constant force and heated or irradiated with UV light until debonding occurred. The necessary debonding temperature was comparable for direct heating and UV irradiation and varied between 28 and 82 °C, depending on the applied force. The latter also influenced the debonding time, which under the chosen conditions ranged from 30 s to 12 min.

Reinforcement of natural rubber hybrid composites based on marble sludge/Silica and marble sludge/rice husk derived silica

A research has been carried out to develop natural rubber (NR) hybrid composites reinforced with marble sludge (MS)/Silica and MS/rice husk derived silica (RHS). The primary aim of this development is to scrutinize the cure characteristics, mechanical and swelling properties of such hybrid composite. The use of both industrial and agricultural waste such as marble sludge and rice husk derived silica has the primary advantage of being eco-friendly, low cost and easily available as compared to other expensive fillers. The results from this study showed that the performance of NR hybrid composites with MS/Silica and MS/RHS as fillers is extremely better in mechanical and swelling properties as compared with the case where MS used as single filler. The study suggests that the use of recently developed silica and marble sludge as industrial and agricultural waste is accomplished to provide a probable cost effective, industrially prospective, and attractive replacement to the in general purpose used fillers like china clay, calcium carbonate, and talc.

Temperature dependence on free volume in cured natural rubber and styrene-butadiene rubber blends

A systematic study on the evolution of free volume as a function of the temperature in vulcanized at 433 K natural rubber (NR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) in 25-75, 50-50, 75-25 NR-SBR (percent content of pure NR and SBR, respectively) blends was studied by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. All samples were prepared with sulfur and TBBS (n-t-butyl-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide) as accelerator. The glass transition temperatures of the samples studied were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and from lifetime data. In general, a sigmoidal-like complex behavior of the long-lived lifetime component, linked to the nanohole free volume, as a function of the temperature was found. For SBR, the slope of the ortho-positronium lifetime against temperature curves could be well-fitted using a linear function. For blends and also for NR, two different linear functions were necessary. This last behavior is explained in terms of the supercooled process involving a reconfiguration of the elastomeric chains. In the case of blends, the state of cure of NR and SBR in each NR-SBR sample was also taken into account in the discussion of the results obtained. Besides, thermal expansion coefficients of the free volumes in the transition and glassy region of all compounds were estimated. The differences observed in the values of this parameter are discussed by taking into account the morphology and formulation of each blend, the crosslink densities, and the role of the interphases formed between both NR and SBR elastomers.
