Abstract
AbstractProton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are becoming a major part of a greener and more sustainable future. However, the costs of high-purity hydrogen and noble metal catalysts alongside the complexity of the PEMFC system severely hamper their commercialization. Operating PEMFCs at high temperatures (HT-PEMFCs, above 120 °C) brings several advantages, such as increased tolerance to contaminants, more affordable catalysts, and operations without liquid water, hence considerably simplifying the system. While recent progresses in proton exchange membranes for HT-PEMFCs have made this technology more viable, the HT-PEMFC viscous acid electrolyte lowers the active site utilization by unevenly diffusing into the catalyst layer while it acutely poisons the catalytic sites. In recent years, the synthesis of platinum group metal (PGM) and PGM-free catalysts with higher acid tolerance and phosphate-promoted oxygen reduction reaction, in conjunction with the design of catalyst layers with improved acid distribution and more triple-phase boundaries, has provided great opportunities for more efficient HT-PEMFCs. The progress in these two interconnected fields is reviewed here, with recommendations for the most promising routes worthy of further investigation. Using these approaches, the performance and durability of HT-PEMFCs will be significantly improved.

Abstract
Hydrogen energy as the next-generation clean energy carrier has attracted the attention of both academic and industrial fields. A key limit in the current stage is the operation temperature of hydrogen fuel cells, which lies in the slow development of high-temperature and high-efficiency proton exchange membranes. Currently, much research effort has been devoted to this field, and very innovative material systems have been developed. The authors think it is the right time to make a short summary of the high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs), the fundamentals, and developments, which can help the researchers to clearly and efficiently gain the key information. In this paper, the development of key materials and optimization strategies, the degradation mechanism and possible solutions, and the most common morphology characterization techniques as well as correlations between morphology and overall properties have been systematically summarized.

Abstract
The appeal of combining polybenzimidazole (PBI) and graphene oxide (GO) for the manufacturing of membranes is increasingly growing, due to their versatility. Nevertheless, GO has always been used only as a filler in the PBI matrix. In such context, this work proposes the design of a simple, safe, and reproducible procedure to prepare self-assembling GO/PBI composite membranes characterized by GO-to-PBI (X:Y) mass ratios of 1:3, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1. SEM and XRD suggested a homogenous reciprocal dispersion of GO and PBI, which established an alternated stacked structure by mutual π-π interactions among the benzimidazole rings of PBI and the aromatic domains of GO. TGA indicated a remarkable thermal stability of the composites. From mechanical tests, improved tensile strengths but worsened maximum strains were observed with respect to pure PBI. The preliminary evaluation of the suitability of the GO/PBI X:Y composites as proton exchange membranes was executed via IEC determination and EIS. GO/PBI 2:1 (IEC: 0.42 meq g-1; proton conductivity at 100 °C: 0.0464 S cm-1) and GO/PBI 3:1 (IEC: 0.80 meq g-1; proton conductivity at 100 °C: 0.0451 S cm-1) provided equivalent or superior performances with respect to similar PBI-based state-of-the-art materials.

Abstract
Hydrogen-air proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are excellent fuel cells with high limits of energy density. However, the low carbon monoxide (CO) tolerance of the Pt electrode catalyst in hydrogen-air PEMFCs and methanol permanent in DMFCs greatly hindered their extensive use. Applying polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes can avoid these problems. The high thermal stability allows PBI membranes to work at elevated temperatures when the CO tolerance can be significantly improved; the excellent methanol resistance also makes it suitable for DMFCs. However, the poor proton conductivity of pristine PBI makes it hard to be directly applied in fuel cells. In the past decades, researchers have made great efforts to promote the proton conductivity of PBI membranes, and various effective modification methods have been proposed. To provide engineers and researchers with a basis to further promote the properties of fuel cells with PBI membranes, this paper reviews critical researches on the modification of PBI membranes in both hydrogen-air PEMFCs and DMFCs aiming at promoting the proton conductivity. The modification methods have been classified and the obtained properties have been included. A guide for designing modifications on PBI membranes for high-performance fuel cells is provided.

Abstract
Abstract
The high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) offers several advantages, such as high proton conductivity, high CO tolerance, good chemical/thermal stability, good mechanical properties, and low cost. The proton exchange membrane (PEM) is the critical component of HT-PEMFC. This work discusses the methods of current PEMs development for HT-PEMFC including modifications of Nafion® membranes and the advancement in composite PEMs based on non-fluorinated polymers. The modified Nafion®-based membranes can be used at temperatures up to 140 °C. Nevertheless, the application of Nafion®-based membranes is limited by their humidification with water molecules acting as proton carriers and, thus, by the operation conditions of membranes under a relative humidity below 20%. To obtain PEMs applied at higher temperatures under non-humidified conditions, phosphoric acid (PA) or ionic liquids (ILs) are used as proton carriers in PEMs based on non-fluorinated polymers. The research discussed in this work provides the approaches to improving the physicochemical properties and performance fuel cell of PEMs. The effects of polymer blending, crosslinking, and the incorporation of inorganic particles on the membrane properties and fuel cell performance have been scrutinized. The incorporation of inorganic particles modified with ILs might be an effective approach to designing high-performance PEMs for HT-PEMFC.

Abstract
In recent times, high-temperature polymer electrolyte membranes (HTPEMs) have emerged as viable alternatives to the Nafion-based low-temperature-operated polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. This is owing to their higher tolerance to fuel impurities, efficient water management, and higher cathode kinetics. However, the most efficacious HTPEMs such as poly(benzimidazole) (PBI) or 2,5-poly(benzimidazole) (ABPBI), which rely on the extent of phosphoric acid (PA) doping level for fuel cell performance, suffer from poor mechanical properties at higher acid doping levels and dopant leaching during continuous operation. To overcome these issues, we report the synthesis of ABPBI membranes and fabrication of ABPBI-zirconium pyrophosphate (α-ZrP)-based nanocomposite membranes by an ex situ methodology using methane sulfonic acid as the solvent. The incorporation of hydrophilic α-ZrP into the membrane resulted in higher dopability of PA (6.5 mol) and proton conductivity (46 mS/cm) of the membranes (10 wt % of α-ZrP) as against the corresponding values of 3.6 mol and 27 mS/cm, respectively, for the pristine membrane. More remarkably, these property improvements could be achieved while simultaneously augmenting the thermomechanical properties and oxidative stability of the membranes. The unit-cell tests showed a marked improvement in the maximum power density for the nanocomposite membrane (335 mW/cm2 at 10 wt % α-ZrP content) over the pristine ABPBI membrane (200 mW/cm2). We also report for the first time the feasibility of a 100 W HTPEM fuel cell (HTPEMFC) stack operated with the nanocomposite membrane with an active area of 39 cm2. The HTPEMFC stack delivered a stable voltage and power output, with a voltage drop rate of 0.84 μV/h over a run time of 730 h.

Abstract
The practical applications of phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole (PA-PBI) as high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs) are mainly limited by their poor dimensional-mechanical stability at high acid doping levels (ADLs) and the leaching of PA from membranes during fuel cell operation. In this work, to overcome these issues, we fabricated novel cross-linked PBI networks with additional imidazole groups by employing a newly synthesized bibenzimidazole-containing dichloro compound as cross-linker and an arylether-type Ph-PBI as matrix. Ph-PBI featured by good solubility under high molecular weight offers satisfactory film-forming ability and mechanical strength using for the matrix. Importantly, the additional imidazole moieties in BIM-2Cl endow the cross-linked PBI membranes improved dimensional-mechanical stability with simultaneously enhanced ADLs and proton conductivity. Furthermore, superior acid retention capability is obtained by incorporating porous polyhydroxy SiO2 nanoparticles into these cross-linked networks. As a result, the SiO2/cross-linked PBI composite membranes are suitable to manufacture membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), and an excellent H2/O2 cell performance with a peak power density of 497 mW cm-2 at 160 °C under anhydrous conditions can be achieved.

Abstract
The preparation and characterization of composite polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes containing zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) and zeolitic imidazolate framework 67 (ZIF-67) is reported. The phosphoric acid doped composite membranes display proton conductivity values that increase with increasing temperatures, maintaining their conductivity under anhydrous conditions. The addition of ZIF to the polymeric matrix enhances proton transport relative to the values observed for PBI and ZIFs alone. For example, the proton conductivity of PBI@ZIF-8 reaches 3.1 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 200 °C and higher values were obtained for PBI@ZIF-67 membranes, with proton conductivities of up to 4.1 × 10-2 S·cm-1. Interestingly, a composite membrane containing a 5 wt.% binary mixture of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 yielded a proton conductivity of 9.2 × 10-2 S·cm-1, showing a synergistic effect on the proton conductivity.

Abstract
The conductivity of a series of composite membranes, based on polybenzimidazole (PBI) containing the metallacarborane salt M[Co(C2B9H11)2], M[COSANE] and tetraphenylborate, M[B(C6H5)4], M[TPB] both anions having the same number of atoms and the same negative charge, has been investigated. Different cations (M = H+, Li+ and Na+) have been studied and the composite membranes have been characterized by water uptake, swelling ratios, ATR FT-IR, thermogravimetric analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to explore the dielectric response and ion dynamics in composite membranes. Our results show that conductivity increases with increasing temperature and it is higher for H+ than for Li+ and Na+ for all temperatures under study. The mobility of Li+ is greater in [COSANE]- than in [TPB]- composite PBI@membranes while for Na+ it is the opposite. The temperature dependence of the conductivity of the composite was followed by a typical Arrhenius behaviour with two different regions: (1) between 20 and 100 °C, and (2) between 100 and 150 °C. Using the analysis of electrode polarization (EP) based on the Thrukhan theory we have calculated the ionic diffusion coefficients and the density of carriers. From the double logarithmic plot of the imaginary part of the conductivity (σ'') versus frequency in the entire range of temperatures studied we have determined for each sample at each temperature, the frequency values of the onset (fON) and full development of electrode polarization (fMAX), respectively, which permit us to calculate static permittivity.
